Theoi Info Sheets Series Part 2: Zeus, Poseidon, & Hades

"When Zeus and his brothers distributed among themselves the government of the world by lot, Poseidon obtained the sea, Hades the lower world, and Zeus the heavens and the upper regions, but the earth became common to all" - Theoi.com

The members of The Olympian Triad (also referred to as 'The Big Three') have always illuded me in terms of reverence and worship.

I've spent the better part of a year reconciling the opinions I had about Zeus in childhood; trying now to see him as he was to his worshippers and less how it portrayed in modern retellings of myth. When I do honor or work with Zeus, I instead choose to call upon his Roman form of Jupiter.

Poseidon, to me, has always represented the depths of the ocean - the dark abyss that we cannot see. In my personal practice I have often connected the oceans and sandy shores with more femininely aligned deities such as Aphrodite and Amphitrite. Due to these factors I have never had any interest in working with/worshipping Lord Poseidon.

Hades is an entity that I have always respected and admired, but I have never felt any connection with him or call to develop a relationship with his presence.

In this way, I would say that out of all the Theoi - The Olympian Triad are three entities that I feel the least connected to. I do not work with any of them regularly - but I do hold them in good regard and good respect.

Sometimes I ask myself who will carry my body to the fields of heaven.

Will it be Archangel Gabriel?

Or will it be Hermes?

Or perhaps,

It’s neither.

Perhaps my body will never reach the fields of asphodel, or jannah.

It was made to rot amongst the plants,

To return the earth from which we all came from.

The white and sterile image of heaven, a color created of all of the primaries,

Birthing an Image so pure

So ineffable,

That we will never understand it.

But it feels like everything we have ever wanted.

The silent yet comforting fields of asphodel

Hades and Persephone watching over me

It is not grand

But it is divine.

It’s not pure,

But it feels so similar to falling asleep as a child,

knowing there is someone is there to keep the nightmares away.

Perhaps when I die,

Hermes and Gabriel will walk hand In hand

To lead my soul to whatever lies beyond

My clay body will melt into the earth

Giving birth to plants, and flowers, and something else

Something that will be around long after us.

I don’t know what it is yet.

But life will live on after my own extinction,

And I know it will be beautiful.

Oh, I am having The Most feelings possible about this.

Instead of a dragged out misunderstanding and an angry Hades yelling around and threatening, we are getting Percy and Grover putting the truth together in front of Hades - and Hades' reaction being to offer them sanctuary.

Hades immediately being like "You're not safe. Ask me and I'll protect you"? I mean, literally saying that.

First time watching this show that I feel like kissing the writers on the mouth. I hate me an Evil Hades take, and Lightning Thief Hades, while not 'the big bad', very much was portrayed as not a good guy and Riordan leaned heavily into cliches of evil (I mean, truly. So hard and cheap).

But? This is everything I want from my Hades.

Is there other deity or entity you interested to work with?

King Paiman has shown up a couple times and I've gotten a bit interested in Him. I've previously been interested in Duke Barbatos, but otherwise in terms of deities that aren’t Infernals I take interest in Lord Hades, Lord Thanatos, Lord Poseidon, Lord Set, and Lord Anubis. I'm not sure if I would work with them or simply worship them, it would really just depend on where I'm at
