Do you think if I gave Gollum a soup, but in a bread bowl, that he would take it in his spindly little grabbers and bite the bread bowl? Letting all the soup spill out onto the ground in a really sad display of nature? It would be a little funny, I think.

Did You Know?
JRR Tolkien, of Lord Of Rings fame, came to despise the character most beloved by his fanbase? In fact, Gollum's widespread appeal was the specific reason why! Tolkien stated on multiple occasions that it was around the time that Finland nearly (narrowly avoided by just a single vote) changed their national flag to the phrase "Gollum not Smeggle", in black text on a white background that he truly realized his disdain for the character. "I simply cannot conceive of how anyone could like a fictional character enough to do this; especially not an inbred rat like Gollum."
In response to the widespread love of the character, Tolkien actually claimed to have written a particularly graphic and extensive death scene for the character, where the main characters beat him to a pulp for no apparent reason except that "Bobo Burgis or whatever decided he was too ugly and it was better just to kill him". Though Tolkien's publisher* at the time described the prose as "Some of the best prose [he] had ever heard" after Tolkien's private reading, he found the scene so disturbing that he removed it without informing Tolkien and replaced it with Gollum randomly, happily saying his own name, and randomly added that same phrase intermittently throughout the rest of the book.
While Tolkien was supposedly so upset about that, according to his wife, he "cried like a little bitch every night for the next month", he acknowledged the success of the catchphrase, (as well as its simplicity) and developed a machine that would pseudo-randomly insert the phrase throughout the rest of the text. While the initial usage of the phrase was enough to make it somewhat popular, it was Tolkien's decision to double-down on it (particularly the scene where he announces it in response to Bilbo's announcement of his undying love for Sam) that cemented it so strongly in public consciousness that to this day there is heavy debate as to whether, at the annual event 'GollumCon', attendees should be allowed to say anything other than "Gollum :)".
*It is worth noting that this was actually the third publisher that Tolkien had gone to with his book, after the first two committed suicide, leaving no notes, after being sent the transcript. The last would also do this shortly after the book was published.

Time for another coffee painting post 🥳 This time, it's none other than the one and only Gollum.
Tumblr media
As always, painted with instant coffee on smooth, heavyweight paper.
I made it specifically for my good friend, whom I used to work with during conventions and shows. It's also been one of my most popular prints 😊

One of the most fascinating details about Gollum for me is that even though it is said that the Ring warps its user’s intentions and makes them commit acts of evil, Gollum never once uses the Ring for any power-seeking purposes. He doesn’t try to assemble an army or rule over anyone. He doesn’t try to conquer lands or replace Sauron. He never uses it with the intent of dominating others. All he ever wants to do with it is hold it, look at it, sometimes wear it, and keep it with him in dark little caves where he can eat anything edible he can find. It’s even mentioned somewhere that the Ring’s temptation in his mind is merely visions of him having enough fish to keep himself fed forever. But he never tries to use the Ring’s power to actually become powerful…the very thing that Gandalf and Galadriel were afraid they would do if they had the Ring. I think that goes to show how Gollum still was shaped by his hobbit nature; it’s just an inherent trait for hobbits to be completely uninterested in any kind of absolute power or dominion of others.

‘He will never love me, I fear; for he bit me, and I was not gentle’
Aragorn saying this about Gollum reminds me of every cat owner including myself.

ngl the funniest part of fellowship of the ring is when sam tells frodo abt how he thinks gollum is following them and then they agree to not tell aragorn until the next day to ensure they don’t worry him. sam and frodo believe that aragorn, a literal ranger, didn’t realize that smeagol was following the company. they were the first ones to realize they were being followed by the little gremlin. like guys ik you think you’re smart, but aragorn is known for his tracking skills 💀 ur not special

"Frodo broke off a portion of a wafer and handed it to him on its leaf-wrapping. Gollum sniffed at the leaf and his face changed: a spasm of disgust came over it, and a hint of his old malice." -The Lord of the Rings: Two Towers, ch 13
