Ahsmaksnk alright I was planning to just say shit without context but since you asked for it, prepare to hear about the worst fucking person!

So context for this story, Thomas Sanders has been struggling with a skin condition that has (among other things) been causing him to lose his hair. He's made a couple of videos, the most recent one coming with the announcement that he was shaving his hair off and changing a few other things about his look as a way to feel more confident in himself. I will say that the reactions I've seen from most fanders has been overwhelmingly positive and I'm getting the impression that he's been much happier since

And I only find this because I'm looking the roleslaying with roman tag, and certain fanders have the unfortunate tendency to tag unrelated Thomas Sanders stuff with the roleslaying tag

So he did a photoshoot with the new look recently. And I find edits of the photo shoot to put his old hairstyle back on, with a caption like "I think the old hair really ties it together 😍".

This is pretty damn insensitive and I have a tendency to go fucking feral when people are assholes about hair so naturally I go to the roleslaying server to bitch about this. Apparently I'm not the only one who's encountered this person, because I didn't even say a url before everyone is like "ugh god this fucking person".

So we're all morbidly fascinated by this person and we start looking through their blog. It's fucking vile in there. Just a whole lot of "wow Thomas is so sexy" coupled with "his new hair is gonna make me stop loving him :/" to make it really clear that they apparently think of him more as an object rather than a person with the right to look how he wants.

Turns out that they've been told directly that this is making Thomas uncomfortable and they haven't stopped. Their response to being criticised about this is genuinely hilarious. It includes some real gems like "I know it may seem like my love is conditional but it's not" (do you know the meaning of conditional) and "I just have some genuine concerns and criticisms" (you don't get to have genuine concerns about other peoples bodies) and "im not body shaming him" (this is absolutely body shaming. Honestly after hes been so vulnerable about his hair I'd say its worse than those other people) and "fanders can't handle even the slightest criticism towards Thomas 🙄" (maybe a fair criticism but what you're doing here is not criticism at all it's just being an asshole)

Apparently they got cancer as a kid or something and thought they were gonna lose their hair, so they get triggered by other people shaving their hair. And there was something about being afraid of change in there too. They described in great detail about how Thomas shaving his hair left them hyperventilating, and how when their irl crush said she wanted to shave her hair they kept dropping hints about how much they hated the idea until she left.

Honestly I'm concerned about them, other people's hair should not be leaving you this distressed. Like they need some help and I don't mean that in the "I don't like them so I'm gonna make jokes about them going to therapy way" I mean that entirely genuinely. I'd feel worse for them if they weren't such an asshole about it though. Like idgaf about your sob story if you're using it to justify asserting your own desires about how someone looks above their comfort and boundaries

Anyway yeah that's the reason I'm never gonna think about the silly fight with the bald guys in the same way every again. I mean I'm exaggerating but yeah

oh lol, I finished watching HB like last week, but i haven't dipped into fandom yet so i didn't realize this comparison was something being done elsewhere as well! Mostly im rewatching the episodes. Honestly to me, the comparison is a bit superficial and has more in common with earlier/mid-season canon trope buckets and how the characters are written in AU fics, rather than how they are like in later seasons of SPN. (the DeanCas dynamic shifted a lot over 12 yrs imo!)

Most superficial thing - the Stolas-Cas owl /headtilt connection. 🦉😂 But Stolas is also a deeply lonely but repressed and dutiful member of a provileged higher class / 'better' group of beings, where he never quite fit in despite being well-placed. It was a meeting with Blitz that put his entire life into a different trajectory, where he finally started to feel things and question his previous life, and ended up forsaking that old perfect life for associating with a guy from a 'lower' class of beings, that he faces derision from his peers for. He is naive to the ways of the world, but willing to learn, even as he is often quite unintentionally derogatory about imps. (this often happened with early Cas) He also has a strong love for his child and a strong connection to the identity of being a father, even though that journey is rocky. He seems to have grown up alone and yet part of a innumerable nameless horde of siblings with a largely absent father, and it is later revealed that the fascination of Blitz and his doubts and unhappiness actually predates the supposedly "first" meeting when they started associating.

The relationship in the beginning is transactional (though in very different ways for both ships), but slowly and surely evolves beyond that. Stolas, despite being much for powerful in supernatural ways, Blitz's is often the one taking the lead and Stolas let's him. Even as Blitz secretely actually thinks Stolas is completely out-of-his-league and is just putting up with him, because he's the toxic guy who everyone leaves if they have a choice and only puts up with if they have to. Then there's the growing up in a nomadic lifestyle with a not-so-great dad, and dead mom in a fire! Right now you could consider the Barbie Wire and Blitz relationship in the Stanford-era!Sam and Dean zone, but clearly Blitz has very strong feelings about his sibling with whom he was close growing up.

lol I was in the tags 5 minutes after the last episode, looking for fanart to reblog. If you want to dip your toes in, I recommend blocking some tags, because the fandom and ship tags are full of antis who need to go watch a different show because they really hate this one and I don't understand why they're still here? Go touch grass, folks. But at least they're pretty good at tagging their hate. I've blocked "anti stolitz", "stolitz critical", "anti vivziepop", and "vivziepop critical" and that seems to have caught most of it.

Thanks for coming back with an explanation! That's way better than the posts I'd seen about it, and I think you're right about the parallels. I think my mental block on it comes from the fact that I ship them for different reasons.

Dean and Cas are reluctant allies at first who become close friends, and there are things keeping them from moving past that. They're always dealing with world ending events that take priority over their own personal drama, and they both fundamentally misunderstand each other's love languages and think things are one sided. I ship them in a star crossed lovers kinda way.

Blitz and Stolas are interesting to me specifically because it started out as a fucked up bargain where Stolas was using Blitz for kinky sex, and Blitz was Not Into It. The power imbalance and dubcon was HOT. And when I found out that Stolas was married too, I was like aw yeah, this guy's a bag of dicks, and he's shoving them into all of Blitz' holes.

Delicious toxicity mmmm.... And then...AND THEN...it's slowly revealed that they both want something more, and Stolas only made the deal because he thought that was the only way he could get Blitz to come back. And it didn't even occur to Blitz that Stolas could feel anything for him because of their class differences.

In the episode that ends with Blitz going "he can get hurt?" with shock and confusion, omg I about fell off the couch. Because on the surface he's talking about physical injuries, but in subtext he's talking about Stolas getting his feelings hurt too. *chef's kiss* ugh it's so fucking good.

Come to think of it, you could make that another Destiel parallel, since Dean doesn't think Cas is capable of feeling romantic love. Now that you've given me a few points of entry, I'm going to start connecting dots all over the place lol

Roommates – Part Fourteen

Pairing: Cillian Murphy x Reader

Note: This plays in 2020. It’s all fiction and not based on Cillian’s real life and family.

It has been a week since Cillian found out about Laura’s lie and, as expected, it took him some time to come to terms with it. Whilst, on one hand, he was relieved that she wasn’t pregnant after all he had been through with her, he was also somewhat disappointed by it. After all, he had been looking forward to finally becoming a father after him and his ex-wife Lindsay went through IVF for many years unsuccessfully.  

Luckily for him, you knew that he was struggling and you were there to pick up the pieces and support him through this horrible initial week after he had found out.

Unfortunately for you, Laura had also since found out that you were involved with Cillian and ceased the opportunity to seek revenge which, for some reason, she still thought she was entitled to. Her friendship with most of your mutual friends had been destroyed after it was found out what she did. But this wasn’t your fault you thought. It was hers alone.

After sending you at least ten text messages, telling you how you were the most horrible person who had ever walked this earth, she informed James and most of your other friends and Cillian’s family about your relationship with Cillian in order to get them to turn on you instead of her.

As a result, James kept calling, messaging and emailing you constantly and you ran out of options on how to block him after he obtained several new phone numbers and email addresses so that he could harass you, thinking that you had been involved with Cillian for years.

As for your family and friends, you found it difficult to explain to them that there was only some truth to what Laura was saying. You tried hard to make clear to them that you were not in a relationship with Cillian and it was Cillian’s mother herself who didn’t take your and her son’s explanations serious.

‘I think my mother is set on the idea that we are together’ Cillian chuckled as he handed you the invitation to her 70th birthday which specifically mentioned you as his plus one.

‘She told me about it already. She also enquires about your wellbeing on a daily basis, darling. Apparently, you aren’t very forthcoming to her about your feelings. Luckily, her birthday not until after Christmas’ you laughed.

You had always gotten along well with Cillian’s mother since you met her almost ten years ago.

‘I am not sure if I should be more amused by the fact that my mother talks to you more often than to me or that she thinks that we will be out of lockdown by January next year’ Cillian then said, smiling before offering you a cup of tea.

‘Well, you know your mum and I get on like a house on fire, sweetheart’ you then joked before approaching Cillian and kissing him gently.

You didn’t usually kiss. Kissing was only to initiate sex which you have had plenty off over the past week even while Cillian was feeling rather depressed about what happened.

You knew that sex would get his mind of the pain Laura had caused him and you were more than willing to distract him from all the madness in his life.

In turn, sex led to you sharing a bed and, since you had sex every night and sometimes even during the day, you pretty much slept in the same room continuously for weeks on end. Sometimes you would stay in Cillian’s room while, on other nights, he would come to yours. It was almost like musical chairs.

But tonight, this was all about to change as, in the morning, you had just gotten your first period since you started being intimate with each other.

As such, you quickly apologised for the kiss you had just given him to ensure that he wouldn’t get the wrong idea about your intentions.

‘Shit, sorry. I didn’t mean to initiate anything. I was just sneaking in a cheeky little kiss’ you said somewhat embarrassed as you quickly pulled away from the kiss.

‘No period sex then I suppose?’ Cillian joked, knowing very well that this was off the table for you even though he had explained to you that it wouldn’t bother him.

‘Absolutely not Cillian’ you giggled before reaching for some more of the pain killers on the kitchen counter.

‘Well, if you change your mind tonight, you know where my bedroom is’ Cillian winked and you couldn’t help but shake your head in disgust.

‘Trust me Cilly, I won’t’ you chuckled.

‘Alright then. No sex tonight. Got it’ Cillian chuckled before offering you to fill up your hot water bottle. ‘How about I fill this up for you, we have some wine, order some pizza and watch a movie?’ Cillian suggested as he took the hot water bottle from you.

‘That would be nice’ you said, smiling and wanting to kiss him again, but refraining from doing so for obvious reasons. You reminded yourself that you weren’t more than friends with benefits, regardless of the rumours out there which Laura had spread.

Half an hour later, you finally settled in the living room with your hot water bottle and two glasses of red wine.

Being so close to Cillian and unable to be intimate with him bothered you and you could see that it bothered him too as he tried hard to keep his hands to himself.

Occasionally, you felt his hand brush over the top of your cotton pants and then move away quickly as if he was a shy little school boy who was doing something naughty and who thought you wouldn’t notice.

It was strange, the fact that you both only ever showed affection towards each other while, before or after you were having sex. But then again, of course, it was normal considering your arrangement. You were friends and, if kissing wouldn’t turn you both on so incredibly much, you probably wouldn’t even be doing that in the bedroom.

But even just in that moment, where he was sitting next to you and was watching a movie with you, you wanted to kiss him desperately and a kiss was all you wanted.

You felt the urge to snuggle up against him and rest your head against his chest but you thought that this also would be inappropriate you restrained yourself from it for the remainder of the evening.

At around 10 o’clock, you finally called it a night. You were tired and exhausted and needed a good nights’ sleep.

Unfortunately for you, sleep was something you struggled with and it was when you lay in your bed for an hour, tossing and turning with your eyes wide open, that you realised what was missing.

It was the warmth which would normally radiate from Cillian’s body when you cuddled up against him and it was the scent of his skin you breathed in when laying in his arms.

Even if you couldn’t be intimate with him, you wanted to be near him, kiss him and cuddle him and feeling this way about him wasn’t something you were prepared for.

Little did you know that you weren’t the only one craving this kind of closeness and non-sexual intimacy. Cillian also was laying on his bed, restless and unable to sleep, realising that something was missing.

He adored the smell of your hair and the softness of your skin pressed against his. He loved spooning against you while you held his arms tight as he wrapped them around you.

He also loved the little sounds you were making in your dreams when there was clearly something pleasurable on your mind.

He soon realised that his efforts to simply fall asleep like this on his own were going to be futile and he decided to get himself another glass of water from the kitchen and settle with a book until he would be tired enough to go back to bed and try again.

‘Still up?’ Cillian asked as he walked into the kitchen and saw you filling up your hot water bottle again.

‘I can’t sleep’ you pouted while moving aside and allowing Cillian to fill up his glass.

‘Me neither’ Cillian then said before making a suggestion which could possibly change that.

‘Do you…uhm…want company…in bed?’ Cillian then shuddered somewhat reluctantly.

‘Cillian, I am not going to have sex with you, I told you that’ you said somewhat amused by the fact that he was still trying to convince you otherwise.

‘I didn’t mean for us to have sex Y/N’ Cillian then explained and your eyes widened immediately.

‘So, you mean just us sharing a bed to sleep?’ you asked confused, causing Cillian to nod.

‘Just to sleep and maybe kiss…if you want to’ Cillian said almost shyly.

‘Just kissing?’ you asked again, unsure about his motives.

‘Just kissing’ Cillian confirmed.

Ahhhh, okay, this took me far too long to have the motivation and inspiration to write but it literally slapped me in the face today so hehe. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR REQUESTING I LOVE YOU SO MUCH AND SDJKFGSDKFHSDKFHKSHF ----

You relished the idea of having a soulmate; the idea that there was someone out there that was perfect for you warmed your heart beyond imagination. You’d spend hours dreaming that you could be blessed with a soulmate. Luck had never been on your side; it had taken a lot out of you to finally admit defeat, that you would never have that special connection. Well, you could at least live vicariously through Tsukishima Kei - there was no doubt he had a soulmate. He was always covered in bruises despite never actually bumping into a thing or hurting himself.

The worst thing was that he didn’t even really like the idea of having a soulmate, he thought they were stupid - in turn, you thought he was stupid. Tsukishima Kei might have just been your polar opposite. Despite your self-proclaimed rivalry, you still tagged along with his brother to Tsukki’s biggest volleyball match so far: a battle against Shiratorizawa.

Volleyball wasn’t exactly your thing, considering how much you already injured yourself, but you’d always support Tsukki; he’d always supported you - even when he’d claim that he actually hated you.

So there you stood, watching what had to be the most confusing yet exciting thing in your life when something happens. Something you don’t really understand, but the crowd goes silent nonetheless, so you follow suit. From what you could tell, Tsukki had just blocked a ball, it didn’t seem like anything special, but as his team cheered and screamed with joy at what he’d achieved you couldn’t help but join in. Lifting your arm up to cheer just as the middle blocker was tackled by two second years.

Then you felt a slight pain, “the fuck?” You grumbled, rubbing the spot, looking up at Akiteru, “hey, can you look at my shoulder?” You winced in pain as you removed your jacket, letting Akiteru check over the area.

Despite the noise around you, he was silent, “when did you get bit? Come on, I know you’re clumsy but this?” He snorted, taking a picture to show you. This was the catch, you hadn’t been bitten. Sure, you were often forgetful, but this would be something ridiculous to forget; so where had this mystery bite come from?

“But…” you tapped your chin, scowling at the railing, trying to focus. Something clicked. A sudden rush of excitement and you jumped up, trying not to squeal. “Soulmate! I have a soulmate!” You almost wanted to cry. All these years of wishing and dreaming had come together! You had a soulmate, one day you would get to experience so much love that it might be overwhelming.

Akiteru smiled down at you knowingly as time went on. You were even more excited while watching the game, barely able to concentrate on anything; things were happening that you couldn’t describe.

Until you could.

You watched as Tsukishima jumped to block another ball - or one touch, whatever it was - the moment the ball touched his hand an almost instant pain ricocheted through your arm. Or, more specifically, your right hand. Your left hand shot over your mouth to stop yourself from screaming.

It was blinding - though you did always have a low pain tolerance. Akiteru was focused so intently on what was happening on the court that he only noticed you when you reached out a shaking hand to him, tugging on his shirt.

He looked down, eyes opening wide at the bruise that had started forming on your hand, the tears that pricked in your eyes weren’t a surprise. “Is something wrong with his hand?” You barely heard someone say, but you couldn’t focus. Not on him. Not on them. Only the pain that resounded in your pinky finger.

“Y/N,” he said. You couldn’t quite explain his expression, like some sort of understanding and realization all at once. As Yachi, Akirteru and you ran towards the infirmary, you still clutching your hand, you bumped into Tsukki. Before you can say anything to him, you’re taken into a separate room.

Akiteru pinches the bridge of his nose, smirking and shaking his head.

“You really got lucky with this one,” he chuckles, looking up at Tsukishima who is trying his best to fight back against the pain. His brows knit together as he looks up at his older brother, what is he talking about? “You know, Y/N, your soulmate?” He pointed his thumb at the door, shifting awkwardly underneath Tsukki’s gaze. Yachi gasps.

You are his soulmate? There was no chance in hell… unless… well, it did make some sense. You were always bumping into things, falling over; you put yourself in dangerous situations without thinking of the consequences and they always ended up badly for you - for him. But you didn’t have a soulmate?

“I always joked about it before, and it makes sense, I mean, you rarely got hurt as a child,” Akiteru points out and he nods, “so even if you did get a bruise, it would be easy to have assumed it was a soulmate. And if it showed up on her, I… I don’t think we have to explain that one.” He sighed. “And then there was that time she shoved you off of the swing and you cut your cheek and shoved her back, and you had a big fight. You had matching bruises and cuts for so long.” This time Akiteru just chuckled, remembering the scene of you both with bandages on so many parts of your body. You’d gone with the dinosaur bandages and Tsukki just went with plain ones - even if he was jealous the whole time.

Of course it made sense that you’d be his soulmate. But did you know?

Tsukishima wouldn’t tell you about the news until after the game, when you both had matching bandages on your fingers. You were shocked and excited all at once, throwing your arms around his neck. The sudden anger surprised him, especially when you ripped off your jacket to show off the bite mark and shouted, “where did you get this from then? You going out having sex?” He rolled his eyes and glared at Nishinoya - the culprit - and it all clicked in your head. In a few years time, after you finally move in together, you’d joke the only reason he got so hyped up during the end of the match was because he was playing for his soulmate - he’d never deny it. Because maybe he was.

You’d relished the idea of having a soulmate, and now that you had one, you couldn’t be more in love.

Alright y’all we need to have a talk because the biphobia in the Loki tag is insane. 

(( ALSO before I start I need to make it clear that I am not defending Loki x Sylvie its literally selfcest and I am not supporting that. So all you loki/sylvie  supporters can go away. I’m not here to support you and your problematic ship. I’m just here calling out the biphobia in the fandom. Like y’all are literally just like those people who ship the clones together from star wars ( who I’ve dealt with them often cause of my star wars blog) and who see no issues with that kind of stuff and will blindly defend it just because its fictional. I really don’t feel like arguing over the problems with that mindset and both of y’all will be blocked on sight. I’m not putting up with it. ))

Ok so with that out of the way. If you’re sitting there hating Loki x Sylvie because its a “m/f pairing” than you need to check yourself for biphobia. By saying things like (and these are only some of the biphobic stuff I’ve seen not all of it):

“Its not a queer relationship.” 

“It’s the last day of pride month but marvel still gave him a woman as a love interest!!” 

“Marvel is back tracking on his sexuality.”

“What was even the point him coming out as bi?” 

Then what you’re actually saying is that you only think bi people are valid when they fit into what you consider to be a typical queer relationship. All of that is biphobic and only adds into bi erasure.

It also pushes the idea that we bi folk have to be a certain way to be considered queer or to be apart of the community. Bi folk are still bi regardless of who they are with. And Bi rep being in m/f relationships is still bi rep. Literally the whole thing about bisexuality is the fact that its attraction to more then two genders!

 So Bi characters being in “m/f” or straight perceived relationships do not erase their bisexuality. BUT You insisting that its bad and pushing harmful biphobic shit because of it does. Like stop having melt downs because a bi character ends up in a relationship that you don’t think is good enough. Biphobia is not a good look on y’all or your ships. 

Also stop calling it a straight relationship! If someone in the relationship is bi then its not a straight relationship. It only looks straight to you because of heteronormativity. If a bi person (or multiple bi folk) is involved then it is still a queer relationship. Literally stop pushing this idea that bi folk going into these relationships are suddenly straight or have chosen a side. THEY’RE STILL BI. They haven't betrayed or lied about anything. Bi people shouldn’t have to prove their queerness to be considered as such. Bi people aren’t part straight or part gay. They are bisexual. And they’re relationships dont change that.

And listen, I get that some of y’all are upset about the mobius and loki ship. I’d rather see Loki with Mobius over the other options too tbh. I love that ship and I think its cute. And I do see how important and amazing it would be to see a canon m/m pairing in the mcu one day. But if all or even just some of reasons for you pushing it is rooted in this biphobia then you really need to take a deeper look into yourself and address why the fuck you cant seem to accept bi folk.

Also we need to discuss how a lot of y’all are erasing his genderfluidity as well. A lot of y’all clearly just see Loki as male and nothing else and are forcing a gender binary on him. Even though we all know Loki is genderfluid and doesn't attach himself to that binary regardless of how he may chose to present himself (or for what pronouns he may use) for the most part. 

On a final note dont come to me with the “but im in the lgbtq+ I couldnt possibly be biphobic!” excuse because biphobia is very normalized in the community. You being in community (and heck you even be bi yourself) doesn’t shield you from pushing harmful biphobic things/stereotypes. Anyone can be biphobic, and all of you need to look into what you’re saying with some of this shit. ‘Cause some of it really is just blatant biphobia and y’all are acting like its all fine and dandy because of your ship or because you’re trying to talk about problematic stuff in the ep.  

Just like, please be more critical of the stuff you say and try to figure out if what you’re saying is rooted in biphobia or not. Are you just supporting your ship? Are you actually calling out the problematic stuff with the loki x Sylvie ship? Or are you just using that stuff as a cover for being biphobic to invalidate bi folk. You can talk about that stuff without being biphobic, because there are legit reasons to talk about them. But a good chunk of y’all are just using it as a thin veil to spew out your biphobic takes. 

And at the end of it all LOKI IS STILL BI AND GENDERFLUID NO MATTER WHAT KIND OF RELATIONSHIP HE IS IN. Stop acting like the type of relationship he choses erases that part of him.

what will it take for you guys to realize that ff writers are human too. they are not less than any writer out there.. they put so much time, care and effort into their every word. heck, even reaching 1k words are hard for some,, we had to consider things before actually writing them down. we had to string each word, sentence, paragraph smoothly so it could have an elegant flow. and more often than never, we would overthink whether the emotions we portrayed in those stories actually resound within the readers. those are no easy tasks y'know.

just because we hid behind an idols name doesnt mean that we're associating them with those stuffs. NO. they're here as placeholders. their character that we saw thru screen is what we based it on; how they talk, act, etc. we do that because writing a character from scratch took too much and we would've given up halfway. it's not as easy as you think. but with idols or any other ff characters for that matter, we could freely explore. the base line for their personalities and actions were already drawn out, and we just need to think of a plot + how to build their character into something readers would enjoy.

even the most basic task of 'read to learn more abt this particular thing' proved to be hard. It's not just abt reading and dumping it all into our writings. we need to turn those information into our personal writing style w/o negating anything.

take writing an au for example,, it took a lot of research. why? cause we want the readers who are not familiar with those kinda stuff to experience the same euphoria, we would like them to feel as if they are able to picture being a painter/dancer/etc.

so please, please look past all those paradigms and appreciate us, ff writers ( every single fandom ). if you dont like the way we wrote things and such, please just ignore them or even block our blog ffs. would it kill to hit the block button? i mean, sending hurtful asks require more effort. why would you go through such lengths?

anyways, to all ff writers out there.. i am really thankful for all of the works you've create. and,, im sure someone out there will agree.

hi!! so i just started writing fanfics, and i was just wondering -- how do you deal w/ numbers and the whole posting online thing? while i know that i should be writing for fun and stuff (bc it is!) and that im literally JUST starting out, BUT i just.. im someone who really heavily relies on validation, and when people don't really respond to my works well (or at all), i kinda just.. feel bad ): idk.. do u have any tips?

🥺 You came to me for advice on this, anon? 🥺 Thank you so much! I’m more than happy to pass on what I’ve learned and help out a new writer. I’ve been reading/writing fanfics on-and-off in some form or another for like ten years, but especially over the last four and am happy to share some tips. There are five main things that I think can help grow your follower count and the amount of feedback you get:

Don’t feel bad about wanting validation.

Consider the platforms where you post.

Write for active fandoms and popular characters.

Post frequently.

Interact with other authors.

This got rather long so I have more info under the cut about each of these. 

1. Don’t feel bad about wanting validation.

There’s this dumb trap that we all fall into as writers that tells us that validation isn’t important and that what matters most is our love of writing. While I enjoy writing, if my stuff got no notes and no feedback then I would definitely have gotten discouraged and quit writing awhile ago. Why would I put all that effort into something if no one seems to appreciate it? There’s nothing bad about wanting people to let you know they like your writing! I get so happy when I see someone left a comment on one of my fics or went crazy in the tags or sent me an ask. And when something doesn’t get any feedback, I get depressed about it and second guess whether I should have bothered writing it. So, definitely try not to get caught up feeling bad because you want people to tell you that they liked your work. 💕

2. Consider the platforms where you post.

I only use AO3 and Tumblr, so I can’t speak to any other platforms, but posting my writing on both of these are widely different experiences. Part of the culture of AO3 is giving kudos and leaving comments, so you’re more likely to get feedback there than anywhere else. I slowly built a following on Tumblr because of my AO3, even when I wasn’t posting anything on Tumblr itself. I would really recommend checking out AO3 if you’re not already on there! You do need to request an invitation, but it only took me a couple of days to receive one. I also have 8 invitations that I haven’t sent out, so DM me if you want one and I can give you one! 

I’m sure you’ve already seen posts about this, but the unfortunate thing about writing on Tumblr is that the feedback is absolutely minuscule and I’m not sure why. There’s this awful culture on this platform of people only liking content and not reblogging it to make sure it gets shared with other users. So, you end up really reliant on your own followers and the tagging system for your works to reach people. And the tagging system is a mixed bag. Sometimes your posts don’t show up in the tags or they will but only after a couple of days. If your post gets enough notes then it might go to the top of the search feed but then only for a few days at most. 

As a sidenote to readers, this is why reblogging is so important! Even if you only have five followers or don’t leave a comment, just reblogging it means a lot to content creators!

Here are some of the tips I have for the mechanics of Tumblr:

Use the tagging system, as imperfect as it is. I think Tumblr now reads the first 20 tags in your post, so use that to your benefit. I usually always tag at least: [character name]; [character name x reader]; [fandom]; [fandom x reader]. You can always also try things like: [character name genre], [fandom genre], [fandom fanfic], [character fanfic] as well.

Make sure your blog is easy to navigate and have a masterlist that’s easy to find. If a reader sees your content on their dash and decides to check out your other works, if they can’t find them on your blog then they’ll probably just leave.

Self-reblog as much as you feel you need to for your followers who may have missed your post. I self-reblog a lot for new content over the first couple of days and then even will do a few icymi self-reblogs later as well. It also helps to have a list in your profile somewhere of your recent updates so people can easily see if they’ve missed something. 

3. Write for active fandoms and for popular characters.

This might seem like common sense, but I think it’s something to keep in mind if you want to grow your follower count and your chances of getting feedback. And there’s nothing wrong with prioritizing a fic over another just because you want more feedback. I actually really want to write something for Chainsaw Man but the fandom is so small compared to the other fandoms I write for that I’m putting it on hold until the anime comes out. 

That’s not to discourage you from writing for characters or fandoms that are less popular -- I have a bad habit of writing for niche characters and fandoms. But I always see my activity spike when I write for more popular characters. Another tip is to try and figure out which characters people are thirsting over but where there’s a lack of fics for them. You’ll also find that some characters or fandoms just have louder fans than others. The stuff I’ve written for Gojo has gotten a lot of likes and notes, but not so many comments or much feedback. But the amount of asks and thirsts I’ve gotten for Naoya is wild. This is something you’ll learn over time as you keep writing!

4. Post frequently. 

This one is annoying because writers have lives and real-world responsibilities and we can’t just write 24/7. But when you’re trying to build a following, even if you can do a couple of short drabbles a week, you’ll really start to see your follower count and feedback grow. I’m not sure if people tend to like longer or shorter fics more, but overall people are just hungry for content and if you can give it to them on a frequent or at least regular basis then they’re more likely to interact, especially if you’re taking requests. 

But don’t prioritize writing and posting content at the cost of your own well-being. As authors we’re all guilty of this at one time or another, but your followers will understand if you have writer’s block or you need to take a step back! Taking care of yourself is more important than getting feedback or interaction. ❤️

5. Interact with other authors. 

Building relationships with other authors is a big one, but it’s also probably the hardest because a lot of us (me included!) are just so shy about reaching out! It’s like asking someone on a date or trying to be friends with someone you really admire. I know it’s scary to come off of anon (I still sometimes send asks on anon!), but authors recognize the names we see often in our notes and in our inboxes and we’re all really nice, I promise! 🥰 And I’m much more likely to read the fics of my mutuals and the people I follow than I am to be searching through the tags.

And I think there’s nothing wrong with reaching out to an author you love and politely asking if they’ll read your work. I think it’s totally okay to send something like, “I really love your writing and wanted to know if it’s alright if I share this fic I just posted with you? I’ve seen you thirsting over [character] and think you might like it if you have the time to read it!” The worst they can do is turn you down. I would never be upset over getting an ask like that as long as it was polite and the person was understanding that I might not have time to read their fic. But, I know that this is really scary to ask of someone. I’ve only done it once or twice, so maybe I don’t have any ground to stand on here, but I really think you should try it even if you need to send the ask on anon first.

Please just be mindful of an author’s rules before reaching out.

Another added bonus is that authors are more likely to reblog and give you feedback on the stuff you write because we’re in the exact same boat as you! We’re the perfect audience. 

And don’t forget...

Growing your follower count and reaching the level of feedback you want takes time. If you’re just starting out, don’t get discouraged. The more you write, the better you get so even if you’re not getting the feedback you want now, that doesn’t meant that you never will! 

And of course, pay it back in kind. Just how you want people to interact with your fics, we want the same. I always try to leave comments on the fics I read on AO3 and always reblog the fics I like on Tumblr and try to go wild in the tags so that the author knows that I loved their works.

How to grow an audience as an artist (by your own means)!

There’s been a lot of discourse lately in the art community and I’ve seen a lot of small artists bicker with big artists regarding followers and commission prices. Well, I’m not having any of it. I made a nifty tip-list on twitter on how to grow an audience and I think it needs to be said here too for those who need to hear it.

This thread is for you, me, and everyone who wants to grow an audience & find business opportunities. I've compiled a list of helpful ways to have your art seen (from my own experience) and i'll be breaking them down step by step in this thread. Let's start with 1.

1) You should not only be posting on twitter (the search engine is very poor here). You should post your art to instagram, tumblr, deviantart, Youtube, ANY media platform where images and videos are easy to digest. It's a chore, but also a worthy sacrifice to get more eyes on you

2) If you post in a EU timezone but your audience is mostly american, well, then you missed your optimal posting window. Know where most of your audience is located (you can put up a poll!) And schedule posting during/around a time where people are likely to be free + awake.

3) Supporting other creators isn't annoying! Your engagement doesn't only help boost the artist you love in the algorithm, but it also makes you easier to find if someone clicks on their art to read the comments! It's a win-win for both of you!

4) If you want to make sure your work is seen, use tags on all the art you post! On twitter it looks ugly (that's why i don't do it often if at all) but on sites like instagram and tumblr it's easy to hide tags for aesthetic. Know what tags are most active and tag accordingly.

5) If you draw something really popular, keep in mind that the content pool for said popular thing/ship is INFLATED. Try to bring something new to the conversation. Something that makes people go "i NEED to follow this person bc they're the only one that GETS IT".

6) Twitter and tumblr (with the right extension) has a function that can "turn off retweets/reblogs" To make sure others are guaranteed to see your art, you can post it again as a new post to make sure it doesn't get blocked by the RT/RB feature. Repost old art for new followers!

7) Collaborating with others helps build both your audience and your friends/mutual's audience! If your interests align (like fandom or even ships) people from both your sides are more likely to go follow you/your friend based on what they see! Give your best in collabs!

8) Not everyone can host streams because of cpu limitations, but what you CAN do is make step-by-step gifs/imgs with online tools to then post it online. Make sure you host streams when people are free and not at work! It's a good chance to engage in chat live, too.

9) If you have commitment and time, join zines, fan projects, weeks, and events hosted by your fandom. This way, you're making content of something you love and you have an audience already willing to watch what you make!

10) You can host your own digital zine to avoid merch/shipping cost and put it up in an online store for download! You can also host weeks/events yourself to get others on board. Only make physical zines/prints if you know what you're doing and have resources to spend!

11) character bdays, game updates, and game release dates happen once a year, but they happen once a year for PLENTY of things. This way, if you draw for things you love and post on the day it's most relevant, more people will be likely to search/share and see it!

12) We all know when the next nintendo direct drops, we see artists RUN with excitement to draw for it RIGHT AWAY. This is both bc we're excited and because we know we have a small window of oppertunity to hit the PEAK of online activity. Your art is more likely to be seen NOW.

13) You have to make content to be seen. Sometimes, being seen doesn't mean your art is good as much as it means you're posting consistently and giving people reason to come back to you/enjoy having you on their feed. The more you post, the more likely you can be seen/rtd.

14) Sketches, doodles, wips, unfinished things! None of these things matter as much to your followers as it does to you! Most of them enjoy seeing you post art, no matter what kind. Post sketches, doodles, comparisons, etc! Let them see/share more of your work!

15) Don't be afraid to interact with your followers or even people who approach you with questions! Being social is difficult, but know that followers love when you reply to them (speaking for myself bc i love when other artists  or reply to my comments )! Engage!

16) You'll learn this from personal experience. There are (with attitude) definitely bad clients and bad artists. But all you need to consider is being respetful and mindful and take your clients consideration to heart. If you can't offer something, be honest! They'll understand.

17) You can grow a lot in a year, but you know what will impress people? If you take that 1 drawing you did when you were 14 of tokyo mew mew and redrew it in your new style! Success stories are worth following. Hard work is always valued and appreciated- flaunt it!

18) Tutorials or step-by-steps are easy ways to get more artists to notice you because we're all trying to do our best to learn and grow. By posting studies or tutorials, you're not only inviting others to share your experience, but you're inspiring them to try new things!

19) Have your art/business email EVERYWHERE. In your twitter bio, on your instagram, tumblr, youtube, etc. Anywhere where you might need it. This way, no matter WHAT platform people find you on, they can ALWAYS count on reaching you via email if your dms are closed!

20) There are several free websites (weebly for one) that offer a lot of freedom and customization. My best tip for making a site is: make it organized, easily readable, un-cluttered, to-the-point, and aesthetically pleasing. No complicated navigation; focus on accessability.

21) Sometimes, drawing 1 popular thing ONCE is not enough. This is bc unless you have something unique or mainstream, people will go where they can get more of said popular content. If you've already been drawing for a fandom, yr more likely to get followers from that fandom.

22) The most important point. Never equate your audience to your worth, and never equate your followers to a progress bar. It's insulting to both you and your followers who are rooting for you. You're worth much more than you get, but it's your job to make others see it. BE LOUD!

Addendum: I didn't put "luck" here bc it isn't something you yourself can control outside of what I've already shared. But keep in mind a lot of the time, it really is about A LOT of luck. Keep your head up, and do your best. 10 followers or 10k followers idc, IM rooting for you.
