at one point, when life finally affords me some significant free time as opposed to snatched guilty-ridden moments, I wand to do something I've wanted to do for a while: grab one of my Ultimate Favourite Spanish films, rewatch it, and dissect it bit by bit here for all who might care (me and... maybe just me lol). and I can't decide which one I'd want to do first:
El verdugo (1963), by Luis Garcia Berlanga. "The executioner". A dark comedy about the death penalty, which manages to be bitingly satiric and a solid denouncement of the dictatorial regime of the time, while art was heavily censored.
Blancanieves (2012), by Pablo Berger. "Snow White". Black and white film, grim & melancholic retelling/appropriation, set in 1920's Andalusia (a very Romantic setting, imo). It stars Maribel Verdú as the stepmother (see my header).
El crimen de Cuenca (1980), by Pilar Miró. "The Crime of Cuenca". Based on true events, about an egregious miscarriage of justice that occurred in the early years of the 20th century and its consequences. Treatise against torture; it was incredibly controversial (members of the government and several courts tried to stop its release. The Supreme Court had to rule in its favour).
so in that spirit... my first poll!!!

‘The Executioner’ – a satire of Spain under Franco on Criterion Channel
The Executioner (Spain, 1963), Luis García Berlanga’s black comedy about an apprentice undertaker who marries the daughter of a veteran prison executioner and reluctantly takes his father-in-law’s job so they do not lose their government apartment, is a social satire with a sly sense of humor.
Nino Manfredi plays the undertaker, a frustrated young man living with his brother’s family, who is…
