You know what I forgot to share? All of my Magic: the Gathering art. They hired me in 2020 and I still have imposter syndrome every time the contact me for more work. These are a collection of my favorites I've done so far, Demonic Bargain remains my all time favorite.

I have two commander decks. One is blue-green, led by Vorel of the Hull Clade, and focused around building up as many +1/+1 counters as possible on a single evasive creature. I love it on a philosophical level because all the art and flavor text is about the freedom and power of bodily transformation and, as a trans woman in the early stages of feminizing my body through hormones, I jive with that.

The other is a white-green, led by Sythis, Harvest's Hand, and focused around buffing creatures with auras, with a sub-theme of token generation. I love it on an aesthetic level because all the art is of elves and dryads and lady-knights, with a sprinkling of cute fey creatures, and it's all very lush and cottage core and divine-feminine, so basically my transition-goal mood-board as a commander deck.

I told all of this to a friend from my commander pod as I tried to decide which one to bring to our next game night, and after I got through all that florid description, he asked me, "Well, which one is better?" And that's when I had to admit that, in terms of actually winning the game, they're both utter shit.

Cool thing about art reference

Have you seen the official art for The Murderbot Diaries? It’s pretty great: dynamic and detailed action scenes, with really interesting poses. Like so:

Well I just happened upon an article by Tommy Arnold (the artist) that breaks down his process, and I am amazed to find that these detailed paintings started as poses with a couple buddies in his living room.

The various characters were sometimes posed together, sometimes separately, sometimes with creative camera angles and furniture/props to get things just right.

Tommy’s the one lying on the floor here.

I won’t copy the whole article over, but it’s really cool. So simple, and so clever. He sketches out his original idea first, then gets reasonably close with the poses, and cobbles everything together in Photoshop to use as reference while he paints.

Look at this awesome picture:

That was real people at one point. Some duplicates, even.

And I am particularly amused to find that Ratthi’s poofy hair was copied directly from the artist’s good buddy Micah Epstein -- a fellow illustrator who’s done his own big-name book art and some Magic the Gathering cards.

Ratthi drew Fiery Confluence, among other things. Awesome.

“13 Cards” is a comical story about how different archetypes live under one roof. Fyodor, like any teenager, wanted an easy life, so that others would do all the boring duties like cleaning and studying for him. The wish came true, and he had 8 clones at his disposal, summoned from a magical deck of cards. Only Fedor did not expect that each card is a unique personality with its own ambitions, and none of his clones is going to wash the dishes. The doubles turned out to be completely unadapted to life in the real world, but they flatly refuse to return to the magical world.

I'm not a huge fan of super effective magic cards. I like weird stuff that doesn't work, and then I'm frustrated when it fails, haha.

But I really like to arrange stuff for Proxies. And since our child has a huge amount of coins and other knickknacks, I thought, why not?

I tried to fill the card with lots of baubles a child would find valuable, various coins, acorns ... The child loves to collect rocks from everywhere and insists bringing them home.

There's even a tiny duck hidden underneath the tules text ☆

Things About Magic: The Gathering That Are Kinda Funny

There are designated card types for both places (lands) and inanimate things (artifacts), but walls are neither of those. Walls are basically people.

Green mana is the faction dedicated to an appreciation of nature in all its glory and wonder, with the exception of birds. They fucking hate birds. And they're also a bit wary of fish.

Instead of life totals, planeswalker cards have "loyalty counters," basically meaning that if they get sick of dealing with enemy creatures or all your big demands, they'll ditch you and go hang out in a graveyard instead.
