300 Parents of Sun Myung Moon’s Followers Call for Federal Investigation of His ‘Fanatical’ Church

WASHINGTON, Feb. 18

Coordinating their efforts for the first time, more than 300 parents from groups throughout the country gathered here yesterday in an attempt to persuade Government officials to investigate the Unification Church and other groups.

They contend that the groups are deceptive and dangerous, and have brainwashed their children.

At a meeting arranged by Senator Robert Dole, Republican of Kansas, the parents and some 300 other spectators jammed a Senate caucus room while spokesmen presented their case to representatives of the Internal Revenue Service, Department of Labor and other agencies.

“Senator Dole, ladies and gentlemen,” said Rabbi Maurice Davis of White Plains, “the last time I ever witnessed a movement that had these characteristics—with a single authoritarian head, fanatical followers, absolute unlimited funds, hatred for everyone on the outside, suspicion against their parents—was the Nazi youth movement, and I tell you I am scared.”

Rabbi Davis, who helped found a parents’ group in White Plains after two members of his congregation joined the Unification Church, contended that the group, whose leader is the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, is not really a religion. He and other speakers asked the Government officials the following questions:

¶ Could a movement such as this legally have tax‐exempt status?

¶ Could it qualify for funding from the Health, Education and Welfare Department?

¶ If it is true that Moon followers are selling flowers on the streets by falsely asserting that the money raised is supporting a drug program, is that not illegal?

‘50% Schizophrenic’

For the most part, the officials replied that they would be glad to receive reports and documents about any group but that they could not give general answers.

The speakers included parents, young people who had left the movement and various specialists, including a psychiatric social worker, Jean Merritt, who asserted that the Moon movement was one of the “extremely important mental health considerations of the time.”

Mrs. Merritt said she had seen more than 150 young, people who had left the movement and that “50 percent were schizophrenic or had borderline psychosis,” presumably as a result of their indoctrination.

One young woman, Martha Lewis, told the officials that, as a member, she had “sold, candy and dried flowers for a nonexistent drug program and nonexistent program for underprivileged children.” Moon followers, she said, are taught that because Satan deceived God's children, they are justified in deceiving Satan's children, a doctrine she said was known as “heavenly deception.”

Dr. George W. Swope, a psychology and sociology professor at Westchester‐Community College in Valhalla, N. Y., read passages from what was asserted to be a training manual for teachers in the movement.

“The whole world is in my hand and I will conquer and subjugate the world,” he read, explaining that he was quoting Mr. Moon.

“We can do anything with Senators and Congressmen,” Dr. Swope continued, reading from the document. At another point he read: “The present United Nations must be annihilated by our power” and “the time will come when my words will almost seem as law. If I want something it will be done. If I don't want something, it will not be done.”

Mr. Dole stressed that the proceedings were an informal forum, not a hearing, investigation or debate. He had requested use of the room, he said, just as Representative Bill Chappell Jr., Democrat of Florida, had made the House Caucus Room available to Mr. Moon for a speech two months ago.

Mr. Dole said he had received hundreds of inquiries about the Moon group and that some 30 other senators—including James L. Buckley, Conservative‐Republican of New York, who joined him at the forum—and 42 representatives had also made inquiries about the group.

House and Senate aides were among the spectators, as were members of the Unification Church and some of their parents, most of whom stood at the back of the sweltering room.

In a statement, Neil Salonen, president of the church, denounced the meetings as a “trial‐by‐media” that would have a “chilling effect on the free exercise of our First Amendment rights to practice the religion of our choice.”

The church sent telegrams to Mr. Dole with names of what it said were 800 parents who supported their children’s membership and 117 clergymen of different denominations, objecting to the meeting. None of the persons named were identified by address or affiliation.

Speakers at the forum stressed their respect for the First Amendment and focused on finding possible illegalities to investigate.

At a meeting last night to plan strategy for their appearance today, the parents were urged to remain cool and refrain from reacting, to demonstrate that their anger was in control.

This was two years after President Richard Nixon resigned, and the Watergate scandal was still fresh in Americans' minds. From this, fluffy, jiggly new desserts - called "delights" and, later, "salads" - took shape in America's kitchens.īut the particular mix of ingredients that became the standard Watergate salad likely originated with the Jell-O brand, which introduced a line of pistachio pudding mix in 1976. Instant gelatin allowed for marshmallows, gelatin molds and what Benjamin calls "other fun foods that you would take to picnics or that you would give for desserts" to be made at home with far less effort than before. "It goes all the way back to the turn of century when you had a remarkable thing happen: instant gelatin," says Susan Benjamin of Harpers Ferry, W.V., a historian of sugar and sweets and founder of True Treats Historic Candy. Its origins date to long before the plans for the Watergate complex were even drafted. It's a story of political scandal, corporate marketing and the ever-changing idea of luxury. So what was the Watergate salad, who invented it, and how did it get its name? We investigated and found a cloudy history that's about much more than food. But now it's very hard to find," Fessenden says. "I've lived here 30 years and I remember when I first moved here you could find Watergate salad offered in many different places - delis, supermarkets, probably at the Watergate Hotel, I'm not sure. That prompted listener Martha Fessenden of Northwest Washington to write to WAMU's What's With Washington and ask, "Why can you no longer buy Watergate salad in D.C.?" The dish has largely vanished like 18 minutes of audio tape. You'd be forgiven for not knowing what a Watergate salad is. 2: How did the Watergate get its name? No. 1: Who ordered the break-in of the Democratic National Committee headquarters? No. "There are three enduring mysteries of the Watergate," says Joseph Rodota, author of The Watergate: Inside America's Most Infamous Address. Except unlike the Waldorf salad or Parker House roll, the Watergate salad wasn't invented at the hotel whose name it bears. And D.C.'s most famous hotel has its own eponymous treat: the Watergate salad. Boston's Parker House hotel is home of the Parker House roll. New York's Waldorf Astoria hotel gave us the Waldorf salad. A combination of pistachio pudding mix, canned pineapple, whipped cream and chopped nuts, the salad is the shade of a Shamrock Shake. We may think of salads as leafy and green, but the Watergate salad is only the latter.

“Don’t Lose Ur Head”: This one doesn’t exactly fit the timeline, but Quackity arrives! He originally was just goofing off, but then he gets involved with the politics of L’manberg and teams up with Schlatt (King Henry in this case) and shit starts to go down. The way I interpret the song is different from the story of the original musical, I see the end representing Quackity killing Schlatt after their argument at the white house.

“What’d I Miss”: Also Quackity! Now Schlatt would be James Madison, and I see it as him taking advantage of Quackity, trying to get him into the election, saying “can you get us out of the mess we’re in” & “we have to win” bc he’s got ulterior motives babey!

“Washington On Your Side”: Quackity, Niki, and Fundy making parties to run against Wilbur and Tommy, Q is Jefferson

“The Adams Administration”: It fits so perfectly, “... ardently abuse his cabinet post, and lose his own election- welcome folks! To the Jschlatt administration!” “Quackity’s the runner up which makes him the vice-president” “Wilbur Soot can’t help you now no more mister nice president”

“Hurricane”: I imagine this takes place on top of the pillar Tommy made, Tommy realizes that he can get himself out of this because Dream is the one afraid of him

“Say My Name”: Alternatively (In the beetlejuice schlatt AU), glatt sees tommy on his pillar and convinces him to get revenge rather than jump

“That Beautiful Sound”: Tommy and Techno team up again, they go feral together, Tommy feels free from Dream.

This is all I have in the playlist for now, this was all just a hyperfixation I’ve had for the last few days and I needed to write this

Today was Alex’s first Christmas party at King’s Kindergarten, the party took place 2 weeks before Christmas day. The week before Christmas day, there would be a nativity play and the day after the nativity play would be the start of Christmas break. Now Alex was having a snowball fight with Laurens, Lafayette and Mulligan against Jefferson, Madison, and Lee. Alex’s team eventually won because Jefferson’s team were outgunned, outmanned, outnumbered, outplanned. The Schuyler Sisters were making snow angels while King George and Samuel were making a snow fort and snow men as the king’s subjects.

Meanwhile Martha, Mr. Washington’s wife was preparing snacks and some warm drinks for the kids while Mr. Washington finished putting Christmas lights and decorations inside the classroom. After preparations were completed, Washington asked his wife “Well, the decorations and snacks are completed, should I call the kids to officially start the Christmas party?”

“Go ahead, George dear” Martha said.

“Kids, come inside the classroom and let’s officially start our Christmas party” Washington called his class.

The kids went inside, and they heard Christmas music playing while Martha handed the kids some drinks of non-alcoholic eggnog and hot cocoa with marshmallows.

“Kids, the snack table is right there” Martha pointed at the snack table so the class can fill their hungry bellies with delicious sweets. There was pie, candies, gingerbread men, and other Christmas cookies.

After the kids ate their snacks and warmed themselves with Martha’s soothing warm drinks, Mr. Washington called the attention of his class again “Alright, class, now it’s time to exchange gifts”.

Lafayette gifted Mulligan a hobby reindeer while he gave the French boy a beanie which he made with the help of his parents. Burr and Theodosia gifted each other a new book while Peggy gave a hair tie to Maria, so she wouldn’t have the trouble of brushing her hair away from her eyes. Maria, in return, gave Peggy a Spy Gear toy set, since she knew how Peggy always wanted to be a spy. Laurens gave Lee a stuffed dog to add to his dog collection while in return, Laurens was given turtle food by Lee for his pet turtle at home and for their class pet turtle. King George gave Samuel a black scarf while Seabury gave King George a toy scepter. Madison gave Jefferson a magenta colored blanket while Jefferson gave Madison a rubber duckie.

“Thanks Thomas, I’m gonna name him after you” Madison said which made Thomas blush after hearing Madison planning to name his rubber duckie, Thomas Jefferson.

Since the class has an odd number of 15 students, one student must give two people gifts and in return must receive gifts from those two people.

Alex then approached Angelica and Eliza and gave them their gifts. Alex gave Eliza a male Baby Alive doll while Angelica was given a Sailor Moon wand.

“Thanks Alex, I’m gonna call him Philip just like my dad” Eliza said.

“Thanks Alex. This toy would show everyone that even girls can be heroes” Angelica said.

“You’re welcome” Alex said to both girls.

Eliza then gifted Alex a plastic piggy bank while Angelica gave Alex a bucket of toy soldiers.

“Wow, I love them both. Thanks, you two” Alex said causing the two girls to beam a bright smile at him, feeling happy about Alex liking their gifts they gave to him.

Peggy took this moment as the perfect opportunity to use her Spy Gear gift from Maria. She took a toy fishing rod from the toy chest, and with the combination of her Spy Gear toy set, she hung a mistletoe that she kept in her pocket. She climbed on top of a cabinet to properly lower the mistletoe. She’s basically doing both her sisters a solid.

Peggy first aimed the mistletoe between Alex and Angelica. Angelica saw the mistletoe first and she blushed and then she saw Peggy on top of the cabinet. Angelica then quickly gave Alex a kiss on the cheek before rushing towards Peggy. Alex’s faced turned red from Angelica’s kiss and Eliza, who also saw the mistletoe between Angelica and Alex, was a bit jealous seeing what her sister did to Alex.

“Peggy! Get down there, you’ll get hurt!” Angelica called to Peggy from below the cabinet.

“But Spy Peggy’s trying to get Eliza and Alex to kiss under the mistletoe” Peggy explained from above the cabinet.

From afar, Laurens and Maria saw the mistletoe still between Alex and the empty spot where Angelica formerly was and they both raced to that spot so they could both kiss Alex.

Laurens arrived first and kissed Alex on the cheek followed by Maria who also kissed Alex on the cheek. Alex was dumbfounded and he thought to himself ‘Is there a line of people who want to kiss me?’

Peggy finally moved the mistletoe between Eliza and Alex. Finally, Alex noticed the mistletoe between him and Eliza and turned red. Eliza then gave Alex a small kiss on the cheek before Alex returned the gesture by giving her a short “grown-up kiss”. Eliza expected this, ever since the first time that had happened to her, she prepared herself just in case Alex would give her another one. To Alex’s surprise, she kissed him back for a few seconds, it was only a quick kiss that last 2-3 seconds.

“Yes” Peggy gave herself a silent fist pump.

“Now can you come down?” Angelica asked Peggy.

“Okay” Peggy replied as she carefully went down from the cabinet.

“Alright, class, it’s time for our Christmas group picture” Washington said as he set up a camera on a tripod which was timed for 5 seconds.

The class gathered in front of the camera before Washington and his wife, Martha joined in the group photo.

“Now everyone, say Merry Christmas” Martha said to the kids.

“Merry Christmas!” Everyone including Martha said as the camera took their Christmas group photo.

One week later, the kids went back to school to prepare for their nativity play. The kids’ families came and sat down on the chairs inside the classroom.

A male doll from the toy chest was used as their baby Jesus and Alex and Eliza both played Joseph and Mary. Burr played the innkeeper who let Mary and Joseph stay at the stable. The Three Kings were played by Laurens, Mulligan and Lafayette. The shepherds were played by Lee, Samuel, and Maria while the angels were played by Angelica, Peggy, and Theodosia. King Herod the Great was obviously played by none other than King George III.

Mr. Washington was the play's narrator as he narrated the nativity story, the kids performed in front of their parents in their classroom.

"Do you have any room at your inn?" Alex asked Burr the innkeeper.

"No, I'm sorry but we're full" Burr said.

"But my wife is having a baby" Alex tried to reason with Burr.

"Well, I do have a stable if you'd like" Burr offered.

"We'll take it" Alex said before Burr guided Alex and Eliza to the stable.

After they arrived at the stable, Eliza brought out the baby doll from under her dress and placed it in the makeshift manger.

The three angels: Peggy, Angelica and Theodosia then appeared to the three shepherds: Lee, Samuel, and Maria, and the angels said in unison "Rejoice for the king is born and is laying in the manger".

"Where do we find the baby king?" the three shepherds asked in unison.

"Follow the big bright star" Angelica said as she pointed to the angel, Peggy who is carrying a yellow prop star.

Peggy ran to where the baby was, and the shepherds followed her, and they saw the baby and knelt before Him.

The Three Kings were then summoned by King Herod to ask the baby king's location.

"You say that you're looking for a baby king, am I right?" King George asked.

"That's right" Laurens said.

"Then find this baby king so I can worship him" King George said.

When they arrived at the manger and saw the baby, they gave him gifts. Mulligan had gold, Lafayette had frankincense and Laurens had myrrh.

Angelica the angel then warned The Three Kings in a dream "Don't go back to Herod because he's gonna kill the baby".

The Three Kings woke up and Hercules said "I can't believe that Herod would try and kill a baby"

"Yes, that's a special baby not to mention, he's also cute" Lafayette said.

"Come on guys, let's take the other way home so Herod won't find out" Laurens said before they left the city using an alternative route.

Herod was angry after finding out that The Three Kings didn't come back, and he ordered for the death of all baby boys, two years old and below. Meanwhile Angelica the angel warned Alex "Herod is coming to kill your baby; you must go to Egypt to be safe".

Alex then woke up Eliza and they both took the baby and fled to Egypt and stayed there until Herod died. After the death of King Herod, the family returned to their hometown of Nazareth instead of Bethlehem.

"The End" Washington said as the kids gathered around and gave their parents a bow as their parents applauded their performance. After the successful performance, the kids said their goodbyes to each other before leaving the school and going their separate ways to finally start their Christmas break with their own family.
