Hi! I was looking through Magica De Spell’s Wikipedia page today and it says that Magica has a sister named the Wicked Witch of the West, who has children named Witch Child and Warlock. I couldn’t find any information of them online so I was wondering if you knew anything about them, if they exist at all.
If they don’t, do you think you could instead do a character post on Magica’s cousin Matilda? Your old family tree posts helped me a lot in understanding Duck lore.
Aw I'm glad those posts help!! I'm still down for making them 'cause it's a lot of fun for me to find old comics and do some research.
Tumblr media
So before I talk about Witch Child, I wanna clarify some things that are relevant to the character.
This is another case where Americans can't stop themselves from taking "sister" and "aunt" literally. Aunt can be used to refer to any older woman in someone's life. Sister is frequently used in stories about witches (because a coven is like a sisterhood/sorority, it's a whole thing). Neither imply blood relation! Even "cousin" is often used to refer to friends/neighbors. Different cultures and languages treat words like that very differently than Americans do.
Witch Child, Warlock, & Witch of the West are all from a very specific time period of Brazilian duck comics where Magica and Madam Mim (from The Sword and the Stone) were living together/dating/???? and interacted with other Disney movie characters. In this specific timeline, the ducks live amongst regular humans which is very strange but you just gotta accept it. Magica also lives in Duckburg I think? It seems like she and Scrooge just run into each other randomly so I believe she and Mim have a house in Duckburg for whatever reason
"Witch Child" is not her name and I don't know why she's referred to like that on InDucks/other wikias. Her name in Brazil (where she was created) is Magali, in Italian she's Maghetta/Maghina/Streghella (inconsistent names in translations are very common), and in French she's Seraphine. None of her comics have an official English publication so again idk where "Witch Child" comes from! But I'll probably refer to her as Streghella for the remainder of this post 'cause it's easier that way.
OKAY now for details:
In Streghella's first comic, Magica gets a letter from a friend asking her and Madam Mim to babysit her friend's daughter. Streghella is whiny and rude and a troublemaker. She ruins a magical career opportunity for Magica and it's pretty funny
Tumblr media
Then there's a whole bunch of comics where she just appears for no reason, making trouble. She's a surprisingly powerful witch but she just loves to piss everyone off, especially Mim.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another important note about Streghella - she was only really drawn by two comic artists during the height of her appearances (in the 70s, pretty much). The above drawings were all done by an artist named Jim Fletcher. But she had a lot of appearances drawn by an artist named Glenn Schmitz, who drew her completely differently.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't know if I would've realized these were even the same character if it wasn't documented lol but y'know they didn't have the same resources in the 70s that we have now so they did what they could.
Anyway, from what I can tell her personality stayed mostly in tact through most of these comics. Whiny, stuck-up, nosy, but also very funny and magically powerful. She would occasionally interact with Scrooge or HDL but mostly her appearances were in Magica and Mim comics.
Oh there's one comic where she looks like this for some reason?
Tumblr media
BUT THEN what's interesting is Streghella making a few appearances years after her comics all came out. First there was one comic in 1995, then twice in 2011 and once more in 2016. There's also apparently a 2020 appearance but I couldn't get my hands on it :(
In her 1995 appearance she looks really cute but her personality is, well. Personality-wise she's completely unrecognizable. Now Magica makes comments about Streghella always trying to be good and getting in trouble for being good all the time.
(Ignore the bad english translation I was just popping pages into google translate lol)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She's still a troublemaker in the sense that she tries to trick Magica and Mim into consuming a potion that will make them good, kind people. But then the comic ends with Magica doing something nice by choice and it's cute but yeah the character is nothing like her original self.
Her first 2011 comic is where she...wants to go to a Jonas Brothers concert and chats with April May & June online to try and make it happen. Something like that. It follows along with "Streghella is too kind and Magica tries to teach her to be evil" from the '95 comic, but for some reason the colorist made Streghella a brunette. Idk! They also forgot her iconic hat!
Tumblr media
Next 2011 comic has Huey Dewey and Louie accidentally traveling to a magic academy. It's very Harry Potter-y? I guess? Streghella is friendly and does some magic. You can tell it's her 'cause of the pigtails and bows. But still no hat :(
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In her 2016 appearance, she's been reading April May and June's blog and wants to help them with some problem. Magica is like no be mean and Streghella's like no I want to help! You get it.
Tumblr media
This comic is pretty fun. Magica turns herself into Grandma Duck and puts a truth potion into some cake Streghella bakes for the Duck Family and gets a bunch of secrets out of them.
Tumblr media
There's also a joke at the end where Daisy accidentally reveals Brigitta's age to everyone (we don't get to see it) but according to this comic, Brigitta is much older than she looks lol Not that we didn't already know that.
Anyway so that's all there is to know about Witch Child/Streghella. She's cute!
Warlock time!
Warlock is Streghella's brother. He's only in four comics total and they're mostly very early comics - his real name is just whatever Streghella's name was at the time but with an -o at the end. If she's Maghetta, he's Maghetto. If she's Maghina, he's Maghino. You get it. He'd probably be Streghello if he had a named appearance more recently.
Tumblr media
His personality is not very distinct from Streghella's. He's also magical and a troublemaker. In his first comic he arrives in the mail, in a, like...little jail cell? Crate? Idk? And then Magica and Mim eventually box both kids up into the crate and ship them away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Yes that's supposed to be him, apparently.)
He appears in the magic school comic as well...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that's it! There's not really anything else to know about him.
Last but not least...the Witch of the West! Actually, that's a lie. Least. She appears just the one time. And I'm gonna be honest. I don't think she's the biological mother of these bird children.
Tumblr media
'Cause yeah she's a human witch. Idk if she's from another Disney property or if she's supposed to be the witch from the Wizard of Oz. Idk man. But Streghella calls her "mama" and she refers to Streghella as her daughter so I'll take those ones literally.
There's nothing much to say about her - she doesn't have a name and all she does is drop her kid off with Magica and then reappear when Mim and Magica threaten to lock Streghella inside a bottle.
NOW if you're wondering...how do these characters connect to the previously known characters that are related to Magica De Spell?
They do not! The fact that Streghella has made a few recent appearances means you can decide how you want her to fit in, but trying to blend these different canons will not be seamless. You just gotta take what you like. Streghella frequently refers to herself as Magica's apprentice so you can always take that route, too.
Aaaaaaaaaand since you asked, I'm happy to talk about Matilda! God there are too many Matildas in duck comics. I have never met a woman named Matilda in my life. It's fine.
Matilda De Spell (not an official name but I call her that anyway) - Magica's teenage cousin! Is she actually, biologically, Magica's cousin? Probably not. But it's fiiiiiiine.
I did actually scanlate all three comics that Matilda appears in, so you can read them if you'd like:
There's not really anything to know about her outside of these comics. She's tomboyish, spunky, fun. Really looks up to Magica. I think their dynamic is fun and I always like to see more teen characters lol I think I've portrayed Matilda as Amelia De Spell's younger sister but that's definitely not canon, just me trying to stick the blondes together.
Anyway sorry this ended up being such a long response. I haven't had the opportunity to research random duck characters in a while. I hope this has the answers you wanted :)

Scrooge McDuck and Magica De Spell - Christmas Kiss - Dimeshipping - Duckverse
Not a Christmas request, but certainly my gift for my friend @monkey-li @monkey-li-reblogs, who is a fan of the love couple Scrooge and Magica, and also related to Christmas and New Year. And I also love this love couple or Dimeshipping.
I drew Scrooge McDuck and Magica De Spell kissing under the mistletoe as a Christmas tradition, and above them are Donald's naughty and clever nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie, Magica's nieces Minima, Streghella and Matilda De Spell, watching them, and there is Ratface, Magic's raven. The real McDuck-De Spell family. He found inspiration in certain drawings of duck kisses. My only apology is that the frame of my drawing is visible, because I had to take a photo so that all the characters fit in one drawing. I hope you like my gift.
Also Happy Holidays to everyone celebrating! Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and Happy Holidays!

Magica de Spell with her niece, her cousin and her apprentice - Topolino comics
One of the first drawings I drew for the New Year 2023 and I drew this at the suggestion of my friend, @boingodigitalart. Actually this is my present for him.
Just as Donald and Scrooge have their families, so does Magica de Spell, who has many relatives, a couple of nieces, two students and an apprentice. This time I focused on three characters. Magica de Spell i.e. in Italian comics as Amelia has one of the most common depictions of her in comics. Yes, she has a niece, Minima de Spell who first appears in a Ducktales comic, but later in the Italian comics she appears more often and becomes part of the De Spell family. Although cute, she is very mischievous. There is also Matilda de Spell, Magica's cousin who is an older teenager and she goes for the older girl witches at her school, but she loves her older cousin who is his role model. Yes, I drew her a bit angry since there are things Matilda doesn't like about Magica. Appears in several Topolino comics. And there's her apprentice Peperelfo who appears alone twice. Unfortunately, he is often neglected by his teacher Magica de Spell, and he also wants to be a powerful wizard, but unfortunately he fails. Usually he rarely smiles, but I drew him to make him look happy and drew a redraw from a comic. Yes, he looks like Donald's nephews. XD
So, that all four characters are there (which appear in Topolino comics), that I plan to draw more characters from the De Spell family. I hope you like this drawing and this idea. And thank you my friend for this! And happy new year once again!

Of all the dishes I’ve made for my family over the years, chicken and potato sofrito is probably the most popular, especially as the kids were growing up.
Sofrito is a Sephardi dish of meat (chicken, usually with the skin on, or beef chunks, seasoned with salt and pepper) and potatoes. It’s cooked for a long time on low heat with very little liquid. Traditionally, the potatoes are deep fried before they’re added to the meat. The occasional onion or root vegetable, such as carrots; squeeze of lemon juice; or pinch of cardamom and turmeric are added, but that’s about it. The slow cooking produces a concentrated sauce — the perfect example of a dish that’s larger than the sum of its simple ingredients.
And just to clarify: Sephardi sofrito should not be confused with the sofrito sauce of tomato, pepper and garlic that’s the base of many dishes in Latino, Spanish and Italian (where it is spelled soffritto) cuisines. Although, as we’ll see, all these versions are somehow related.
The word sofrito comes from the Catalan “sofregit” and Spanish “sofreír,” that mean to lightly fry something. According to Britannica.com, the origins of sofrito can be traced back to Catalonia, to a dish called sofregit. The dish emerged after new vegetables, such as carrots were introduced to the Iberian Peninsula by the Moors. The earliest recipe for sofregit appeared in the Catalan cookbook “Libre de Sent Soví,” circa 1324, and included onions, leeks, garlic and salt pork slowly cooked together.
It’s only after “discovering” the New World that tomatoes and peppers were added to the mix, which resulted in the sauce that’s so popular today. But by that time, the Jews had been expelled from the Iberian Peninsula. With the expulsion from Spain, Sephardi Jews emigrated to North Africa, parts of Europe and the Ottoman Empire, bringing the basic dish of lightly fried root vegetables and meat with them.
Some moved to modern day Israel in the 15th century, and even more during the 16th century after the Spanish Inquisition. They settled mainly in Jerusalem, Tiberias (where they called the dish sifrito), Safed (where it was sometimes known as sofrita) and Hebron. More Sephardi Jews arrived in the 19th century, mainly from Turkey and the Balkans.
“The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem,” a novel (and now a TV show on Netflix) by Sarit Yishai-Levi, follows four generations of the Sephardi Ermoza family in Jerusalem. Sephardi food descriptions are an essential part of the story, and among dishes such as hamin macaroni and biscochos, there is also mention of sofrito.
“My mother Luna passed away shortly before my eighteenth birthday. A year earlier, while the whole family was sitting around the table for lunch as usual and she was serving her famous sofrito with peas and white rice, she sat down on her chair and said, ‘Dio santo, I can’t feel my leg.’”
Matilda Koen-Sarano includes two sofrito recipes from Jerusalem in her Sephardi cookbook “Gizar kon Gozo” (Cooking with Ladino Flavors, written in Hebrew and Ladino). The first is a simple beef shoulder sofrito with nothing but potato, onion, oil, salt and pepper, which is the most popular version of the dish in Israel today. The second is made with chicken thighs, potatoes and many spices and taste agents, such as tomato paste and garlic.
In another Sephardi cookbook from Jerusalem, “The Cook from Agripas St.” (written in Hebrew), author Aviva Ben-Joseph includes three sofrito recipes. They’re all, in fact, different types of beef stews cooked with very little liquid on low heat; none of them contain potatoes or other vegetables.
Sofrito was also eaten by Sephardi Jews in Egypt. Cookbook author and food historian Claudia Roden includes two Egyptian sofrito recipes in “The Book of Jewish Food” from her own family: one with chicken and one with veal. She writes that the potatoes were originally deep fried before they were added to the pot with the meat, but says that her mother switched to tiny boiled new potatoes when the family moved to London. (The Jewish community as a whole left Egypt after the establishment of the state of Israel.)
In my house, sofrito means warm, satisfying homecoming. My version is as minimal as can be, and really easy to prepare. I use skinless, boneless chicken thighs, potatoes, oil, turmeric, salt and pepper, but you can use any cut of meat and add other root vegetables to the potatoes. Since both the chicken and the potatoes need the same cooking time, about one hour, I can fry the potatoes in the same dish as the chicken, adding even more flavor to the potatoes, and saving a dirty dish. I hope you’ll give it a go; maybe it will become your own family’s comfort dish, too.

Scrooge: Glomgold, is this really necessary?
Glomgold: Yes it is, you worthless, thankless ingrate! I can't believe that you--
Matilda: Alright, gentlemen, let's calm it down. Take a deep breath... *inhales* Good. Now, Flintheart, let's address the issue.
Glomgold: The issue. The issue, is that I dedicated me whole life to be his greatest challenge! And what does he do? He goes to that two-bit sorceress for it!
Scrooge: Well, I don't see how that's--
Matilda: Scroogey, hold on, this is Glomgold's turn. Now, how did that make you feel, Flintheart?
Glombgold: It made me feel hurt... Made me feel inadequate... Like I'm not good enough.
Scrooge: Oh, Flinty, don't be like that. It was just a one time thing. Glomgold: WAS IT, MCDUCK?! 'Cause last time I checked, you were about to go find some magic treasure hidden in Transylvania that's sure to alert Magica again.
Scrooge: Well, sure, but--
Glomgold: SEE! THIS IS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!
Scrooge: Flintheart, c'mon. You tried to bring down my plane in my new expedition to El Dorado last week.
Glomgold: Yeah, well, I bet you would try to survive much harder if Magica were there!
Scrooge: That's not fair, I--
Matilda: Alright, let's not get too off topic. Scroogey, tells us: Why did you decide to go on an adventure that was sure to attract Magica.
Scrooge: *sighs* De Spell is... I dunno. She just... does things, y'know? Things you can't. I can't go through life only knowing the same thing day in day out.
Glomgold: OH, THERE IT IS! After fifteen years, I just don't excite you anymore, Is that is?!
Scrooge: You know, Goldie wasn't like this when you came along.
Glomgold: Oh. So that's what this is now, huh?
Matilda: Now, Flintheart, nobody is saying you aren't Scrogey's rival anymore.
Glombold: NO! I want to hear it from him!
Scrooge: *nervously* I-I mean...

Duckmber 2023 day 9: Favorite Exclusive Comic Character
I couldn't decide on which of my favorite exclusive comic characters to draw so I went with doing Magica's niece Minima, her cousin matilda, and her apprentice Paperelfo. Also had this idea of them hanging out with Magica and Morgana.

Duck Musings - Why kill off Hortense?
An interesting question popped into my mind recently. It was revealed not too long ago that in the DuckTales 2017 verse, Donald’s and Della’s parents, Hortense McDuck and Quackmore Duck, were actually still alive, even though it has been commonly accepted amongst comic fans that it was safe to assume that the two were dead. Which does beg the question, if Hortense is the youngest of the McDuck children, and both Scrooge and Matilda are alive in the comics, why do we kill off Hortense?
Well the easy answer is that A) it explains why she’s never seen and why it appears that Donald was raised by Grandma Duck and B) fits in with the whole dead Disney Moms cliché. Of course we never get much confirmation that Donald’s parents are dead, but the idea fits in.
However, I think that’s only the surface answer, and by God, if I can overthink something about the Duck Comics, I’m going to overthink it.
Something I find a lot of Duck fans really enjoy, is the tragedy of the characters. I touched upon this when I talked about Gladstone Gander, but his tragedy falls along the lines of “it is lonely at the top”. A lot of writers and fans will explore the tragedy of Gladstone’s complicated relationship with Magica De Spell, Scrooge’s past and his love of wealth, it even slips into fans of the 2017 series, with people making headcanons of fanfictions of Fethry’s isolation in the abandoned sea lab. Why do these characters invite us taking such a tragic look at them? Why is it we want Gladstone and Magica to never get together? Why is it we want Fethry to get some retribution for his time in the Sea Lab? Why is it we want the characters to lose their loving parents?
However, it is this tragedy that can bring the characters together. Fans of DuckTales 2017 have noticed that Gladstone, Fethry and Della have spent most, if not all of the ten years Donald spent mad at Scrooge in isolation, noting that they all share that tragedy, albeit in separate ways, Gladstone being stuck in a casino that feeds off his luck, Fethry being stuck in a dilapidating sea lab, Della being stuck on the moon, and her only way home destroyed by a giant bug. It’s also easy to assume that Scrooge as well, was in some form of isolation. When we first see him, interacting with his money, he isn’t diving into it like we normally associate the character doing, he looks down almost depressingly at the vault as he drops a few coins in. It’s easy to believe that the only people Scrooge interacted with before Donald came back into his life, were his business partners, and Beakley and Webby.
This makes you wonder if the characters share other traumas and depressions, something they can all bond over. Something like, the death of their parents. It is common knowledge that Gladstone Gander’s parents, Daphne Duck and Gustave Gander, met an unfortunate fate on Daphne’s birthday, where they received a free picnic, and overate, or more realistically, choked on something. The tragedy of it is, Daphne shared the same birthday with her only son, Gladstone. Duck fan-comic writer Sarah Jolley, otherwise known as ModMad, did a fantastic take on this story in their comic The White Balloon, which adds even more tragedy to the story by tying it up with Gladstone’s insane bad luck on his Birthday, and also implying that Gladstone himself had something to do with it.
Canonically, Donald and Fethry do not share this tragedy with Gladstone, as there has never been confirmation of either of their parents dying, at least to my knowledge. But it is often headcanoned that Hortense and Quackmore died, leaving Donald to be raised by Grandma Duck, and it’s often been thought, though not by everyone, that Fethry’s parents, Eider Duck and Lullabelle Loon, also died. In a way, it brings the three cousins together, and it does tie into how they see family. In Ducktales 17, we know a big reason that Donald is overprotective of his nephews is because of Della’s mishap in space, that he fears losing someone else so close to him, especially Della’s kids. It isn’t hard to see that Donald feels similar about Gladstone and Fethry, that the loss of his parents, and his aunts and uncles, is a large reason that despite everything, he still loves his cousins. It can also tie in to readers who believe that Della died in space or on the moon, that this is some kind of curse for the Duck Family, Donald’s mother died, and when his sister became a mother, she died too.
One of my all time favourite Alternate Universes for the Duckverse is Solbabydraws’ “Teenage Cousin Shenanigans” which explores the universe where Donald, Della, Gladstone and Fethry grew up on Grandma Ducks farm, and it does not shy away from the fact that their parents are all dead. It even gives them character traits that might have stemmed from the trauma of having lost their parents at such young ages. Gladstone’s parents died from something food related so he has an eating disorder, Donald’s parents died in a car accident, so he takes road safety super seriously, Fehtry’s parents died unexpectedly and his brother, Abner (Sort of comics canon) was sent away, so he is kind of clingy. It doesn’t just look at how their tragedy effected them on a surface level, it does add some depth to it.
I looked at the possibility of how a tragedy effected Donald in this post here, where I talk about how Donald might not just be jealous of Gladstone’s luck, but also resent it, tying it to the loss of Della. And in another post, I talk about how Gladstone’s life of ease and luxury could simply just be a coping mechanism for him, toping it off with this post where I call Gladstone “Disney’s greatest Tragic Figure”. So, in some ways it is interesting to think about how these different tragedies have affected the characters, from Gladstone having an eating disorder, to Donald having PTSD from his time in the military.
Circling back to the original question, if it is unconfirmed that Donald’s parents are dead, then why do assume they are? Well, the basic answer, I believe is because at the end of the day, we do like exploring this tragic side of these characters. One of the greatest Duck comics ever written was a Topolino story called “The Solitude of the Four-Leaf Clover”, which asks the question, “What if Gladstone felt his luck was a bad thing?”. In some ways, this tragedy can help make the characters more relatable, easier to empathize with, and in some ways understandable. In the end, Hortense and Quackmore are not casualties or the vicious off-screen disease, but simply because their demises, make for a more interesting character study.
...
...
But, why does it? Why do we want these characters to go through hardships, misery and trauma? For that, I have theories, but nothing more.

Name: Zofia Kowalska Species: Vampire Occupation: Former Antiques Dealer Age: 315 Years Old (Looks about 26) Played By: Grace Face Claim: Matilda De Angelis
"I’ll build myself and my world anew from burnt and broken pieces, and I'll fashion them into something shining and glorious."
Zofia Kowalska had always wanted more from life. She dreamed of parties and jewels, castles and crowns. She loved the night because it hid what was true. She could stay in bed in the forgiving shadows, convincing herself that she would wake the next day living in splendor. She would curl up with that dream and try to will it into existence, until her enemy the sun started to creep its way over the horizon to remind herself her life was no fairy tale.
Zofia grew up in Gdansk, youngest child of Milos, a cobbler, and his wife Izolda. The couple didn’t have enough money to pay another dowry, and all of her siblings had earned their share. Zofia would simply have to set aside her childish fantasies and grow up. Still determined to enjoy some worldly comforts, Zofia decided if she couldn’t be the one wearing the pretty dresses, at least she could be near them. At the age of 16 she set out to attempt to work her way up in the households of the local nobility. After years of working as a maid, she finally became a lady’s maid to Karlonia Branicka. The lady was famous for her parties, and even more famously well connected. Dignitaries from all over found themselves in Karolina’s parlor. Zofia had long been considered a spinster, but it couldn’t possibly hurt to look at the beautiful strangers the noblewoman had collected over the years. At one party in particular, a new addition to Karolina’s menagerie of friends captivated Zofia. She’d been instructed by her mistress to see to the Du Pont’s every need, and Zofia was all too eager to please. Though she was surprised to find Madame Seraphine Du Pont seemed to be just as fascinated with her as Zofia was with the woman and her companions. “A pretty thing like you should not be a mere servant, ma colombe.” The woman had said, petting Zofia on the cheek. “Wouldn’t you like to be so much more?” Hearing her dream spelled out for her, Zofia nodded. “Yes,” She had said. “More than anything I’d like to be like you.”
The next day, Zofia Kowalska was reported dead. And yet she’d never felt more alive.
Zofia Du Pont never wanted for anything. When she had arrived at the Du Pont clan’s chateau in the Loire Valley in France, she felt as if she’d stepped into one of her dreams. It was easy to forget that she no longer needed normal food when her new form of sustenance was poured out for her in crystal goblets and fine china tea cups. Seraphine and Adrien, Seraphine’s consort, as well as their ‘son’ Henri, taught her everything she needed to know. To unsuspecting humans, she was always presented as Sofie Du Pont, Adrien’s distant cousin. Zofia learned that being a Du Pont meant experiencing life as it was meant to be lived. Operas, ballets, and art galleries- the most exquisite fashions and perfumes- nothing was too good for the Du Ponts. The revelries went on for centuries. Sofie saw the world, and played with it. From spectacles such as seeing the Eiffel tower light up for the first time, to pretending to be the long lost duchess of a notable Russian family on a dare from Henri, Sofie Du Pont did it all. So when her new family wanted to join some of the Du Pont clan that had made their way to America, why would she have said no?
The United States at the dawn of a new century was a whirlwind for Sofie. She barely noticed the Depression or the onset of another World War- it was hard to when she was still thriving off the high that was the twenties and still enjoying the luxuries of being on the Du Pont bank roll. She didn’t notice, as the decades passed, that more was going wrong. Every day they received news that more of their clan had gone missing, or turned up dead. She didn’t start to pay attention until Seraphine and Adrien were killed by a slayer and Henri went missing. And by then it was too late.
Alone for the first time in her existence, she had made her way by selling antiques, and had started to settle into life in Wicked’s Rest. She’d started to find a home for herself, to make a new family. Things were finally looking up again. A shame that’s when she stepped into a trap.
Being one of the last survivors left those hunting her clan to eradication with the brilliant thought that she might be in contact with the others. Holding her hostage for months, they tried to extract the information they thought she had from her by any means necessary. Then one day, they made a mistake. They left only one person on guard. In a moment of clarity from the fogginess of her mind, Zofia managed to escape. Now, she’s more determined than ever to finish the hunters off, and to create a new clan for herself.
Character Facts:
Personality: Charming, focused, loyal, captivating, driven, obsessive, vain, forgetful, impulsive, detached
She once pretended to be the long lost Grand Duchess Anastasia as a dare from Henri
Her birthday is June 3rd 1709, making her a Gemini Sun, Aries Moon.
She worked for a while as an independent art broker and antiquities dealer. It’s very easy to sell old works of art when you’ve been collecting them for centuries. She rented a small space as her office in Nightfall Grove, and called the business Dorian Gray and Associates (she thinks it's hilarious, even if she was the only ‘associate’ the business had)
She’s gone by many last names over the centuries, but her first name has always been Zofia, Sofie, or some variation upon that.
Before it was driven to near extinction, she was a member of the Fleur De Sang clan, a vampire clan in France. The Du Pont line of the clan was a particularly prominent one, and their deaths/disappearances sent many scattering into hiding.
She has always been a patron of the arts, whether it’s performance art, sculpture, paintings- you name it, she supports it. One thing that she’s held on to over the years that she probably shouldn’t have because it’s INCREDIBLY conspicuous is a portrait of her done by Madame Le Brun. The painting is over two centuries old and belongs in a museum and not in Sofie’s apartment. But there it is. Hanging in her living room.

Minima the beloved... also Adélia
Adelia De Spell first because she’s super easy: she’s been in one comic and never mentioned in any other comic ever lol
Thank you to @myrskytuuli for doing a lil scanlation of the comic way back when (link) (part 2 link) so that’s a lot less work for me. What do we know about Adelia? She’s Magica’s cousin who made a decision to stop being a witch and be a fairy instead. It’s funny to know that’s a decision someone can just make. Will Matilda or Minima make the same decision? You never know
Tumblr media
We also learned that the process of going from a witch to a fairy involves many trials, the last of which is trying to convert another witch into becoming a fairy. Very specific. Part of me thinks Adelia made that up ‘cause she wanted to hang out with her cousin Magica but who knows.
Anyway that’s all we know. She’s trusting and a little airheaded, but the fact that she was born a witch and gave it up as an adult is interesting. It’d be nice to see her again. Also here’s some fun images/dialogue and then I’ll get to Minima under the cut:
Tumblr media
cute
Tumblr media
“everybody knows, bitch”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
magica’s physical age fluctuates depending on the author but its fun to wonder if she’s immortal or not
anyway MINIMA TIME! Minima De Spell:
Minima is interesting. She was created specifically for DuckTales 1987, but then they never got to include her in the show, just in the one DT87 comic. But it’s funny ‘cause Magica had a number of young nieces and nephews that they could’ve used instead of making up a new one, but (shrug)
I think Minima might be the only DuckTales cartoon creation that was notable enough to become canon in the comics?? Don’t quote me on that tho
I’ll start with her DT87 comic appearance even though it has zero relevance to her characterization in the regular comics. Minima doesn’t seem to be very close to Magica, only staying with her temporarily while her mother (a sister/sister-in-law/cousin/fellow witch of Magica’s?) is busy. She befriends Webby and then tries to use Webby to get Scrooge’s dime, but then realizes she likes Webby too much to do it. It’s very cute, reminds me of Weblena.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(hanging out on a playground jungle gym is also reminding me of weblena lol)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(sorry for the bad quality pics i just took them with my phone ‘cause i can’t find the digital copy i thought i had of this comic)
Overall, here Minima is loyal to Webby and doesn’t care much about Magica’s life goal. She gets bullied by her peers and has magic powers but they’re not super powerful.
THENNNNNN four years after that was published, Minima made her first Topolino appearance! Funny enough, her original comic was never translated into Italian, so this was her first appearance in Italy. Also the first appearance of Magica’s not-fiancé and her granny’s apprentice, Rosolio Rhododendron.
There was a couple of comics between 1995 and 2002 where Minima/Granny De Spell/Rosolio showed up and caused mayhem for Magica, but Minima’s presence in them is...minimal. She likes Ratface and she plays pranks and is a very silly kid. Also kind of a bit sadistic towards the poor bird. More interesting than that, Magica apparently put a spell on Granny/Minima/Rosolio where they’re trapped in some magic dimension for 77 days at a time and can only come out every 33 hours (in this screencap it says 333 but later they say 33). They’re doing really well despite this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh hey look she’s in the little witches version of the Woodchucks! Junior Witchhex Guidebook...cute. I guess there’s a lot of magic things going on in that other dimension she’s spent several years of her life in
Tumblr media
very philosophical child
well that’s it for officially translated comics. I was able to find 1 out of Minima’s 3 other appearances...
Tumblr media
Here she’s just telling Magica to stop playing videogames so much
One of the other appearances is something to do with Halloween and it includes April May and June so I’d love to find it but I really struggle to get my hands on stuff from the Netherlands lol
anyway so that’s Minima! She definitely likes to torment poor Ratface but she’s also very good at magic and she’s barely experienced any of the human world since she’s mostly trapped in a magic dimension all the time

Happy birthday, Carl Barks!
On March 27, 1901, near Merrill, Oregon, Carl Barks was born, the famous writer and artist of Donald Duck comics who would turn Donald Duck and his family into something spectacular, starting with Duckburg and the Duckverse universe. He had a difficult childhood and was constantly looking for work until he started working for Disney from 1935. He worked on writing scripts for many classic Donald Duck shorts, and from 1942 he started writing and publishing the comic book "Donald Duck Finds Pirate Gold" and since then he has been writing famous comics that will be read all over the world and that Donald Duck will be even more famous. Although Al Taliaferro invented Donald's nephews, Huey, Dewey and Louie, Gus Goose, Grandma Duck and Bolivar the dog, while Walt Disney Donald and Daisy Duck, Barks remains famous for perfecting these characters and inventing one of the most famous characters without that the Duckverse wouldn't even exist. They are certainly Scrooge McDuck (created in 1947), Gladstone Gander (created in 1948), Beagle Boys (created in 1951), Junior Woodchucks (created in 1951), April, May and June Duck (created in 1952), Gyro Gearloose (created in 1952), Cornelius Coot (created in 1952), Goldie O'Gilt (created in 1953), Flintheart Glomgold (created in 1956), Magica De Spell and Miss Quackfaster (created in 1961), John D. Rockerduck (created in 1961), Abner Whitewater Duck (created in 1962), as well as Neighbor Jones, Soapy Slick, Pig mayor, Matilda and Hortense McDuck and other characters.
He stopped working with comics in 1967, but continued to draw special artwork and developed a duck style that influenced other artists and writers to follow him. Although he established his own rules for the Duckverse and the duck family, he never established it as true canon and let other authors make up their own. He strove for excellent humor (sometimes dark humor), and his comics are proof of that, even though conclusions about adventure comics were drawn from it. Those comics will later greatly influence other media, not only for Disney, but for the creation of the Indiana Jones movies. Influenced a lot on Osama Tezuka, the founder of manga. It also influenced the creation of Ducktales in 1987. He traveled around European countries and met other Donald Duck comic artists and writers. He especially influenced Don Rosa, Romano Scarpa, William Van Horn, Guido Martina, Carpi, Vicar and other authors. He married three times and left two daughters. He died on August 25, 2000 in Grants Pass, Oregon.
And now the best pictures of him in memory of the great Donald Duck artist who won The Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame in 1987. He was also called The Duck Man and The Good Duck Artist. If you love this comic artist and writer, feel free to like and reblog this and tell me what your favorite Carl Barks comics are. Happy Birthday Carl Barks!
