GIF Tutorial

Someone asked me how I made my gifs so HD so I decided to write a full step-by-step uuuh babyyy 🎶 tutorial + useful tips on every part of the process.

It is explained in detail, so people with 0% experience can try it for the first time, and the more experienced gif makers can focus on the parts they are interested in 👍 (click on the images to see them bigger)

Disclaimers: I am not a professional, I have learned by trial and error and by watching other amazing creators. I use photoshop CC 2019 in Spanish so some of the names may vary but I tried to use the more accurate English names and used colors as references so even in other languages you can still follow this tutorial.

GIF TUTORIAL STEP BY STEP:

1.- Open photoshop and create a new project. Then go to “files” 🠲 “import” 🠲 “convert video to frames” 🠲 this will send you to your video folder, and from there select the one you want. TIP 1: try always to download it in the best quality possible (1080p or 720p) so you will end up with “cleaner” HD gifs.

2.- When you select your video, then you will have to choose the specific moment or scene you want (you do this by selecting and moving the arrows at the bottom of the image) TIP 2: I usually limit every 2 frames, but if your scene is too short (less than 20 - 25 frames) then I suggest not clicking the limit and leaving it at 0, likewise if your scene has too many frames (over 70) then limit every 3 frames 👍 to make it smaller.

3.- Sometimes when you select your scene, a few extra frames will show up in your timeline, it’s ok, you can delete them by selecting the frames and clicking the trashcan icon at the bottom. Next, don’t forget to change the speed, you do this by selecting all the frames (click the first one then press SHIFT and click the last one, this will select everything), and then click one of the numbers below the image and select “Other”. TIP 3: Usually I use between 0,07 - 0,08 (my fav) - 0,09 from faster to slower. The speed will depend on the gif you are making. TIP 4: If you have PSDs colorings, now it’s time to add them, just click and drag your PSD on top of the image, and remember to make sure it is on top of all the frames and layers ( the ones on the side). Personally, I do it now, because when I do it later in the process there is always a few frames that won't color.

4.- Now that we have our desired frames, speed, and PSD coloring (optional), we need to make it easier to keep editing. So we need to click on the little icon with stripes at the top right corner on top of the timeline (the orange square) 🠲 “Convert timeline into video” 🠲 and now you should have one long frame instead of many single ones.

Now let’s do the same with the layers that are on the right (purple circle), once again click the first layer then shift-click on the last one to select everything 🠲 right click on one of the layers 🠲 “convert into a smart object” 🠲 and now all the layers also become one.

5.- What I like to do next is to cut and then resize (you can do it the other way around if you’d like) select the cutting tool on the left side (light blue circle) and then it is up to you to choose which shape do you want (in the purple circle) there are some basic proportions but you can also make your own.

6.- Now is where all the fun begins. Let’s resize our image so we won’t end up with a giant gif. to do this go to the “Image” tab on top of the screen 🠲 “image size”

TIP 5: To choose a good size, please keep in mind the standard sizes on Tumblr or other social media. If you are using one gif per row then the size should range between 540px - 560px - or 580px / If you are using 2 gifs per row then the size should be around 268px / and if you have 3 per row then the size should be around 177px. Once you select the appropriate size… this is where it gets tricky. Depending on the gif you are making you will have to select a different option ex: if your gif is too blurry or has lots of movement or grains if they are too dark or too light if the colors are too different, all these factors will determine what you need to use. TIP 6: I usually use only 3: bilineal - bicubic reduction or keep details 2.0 (the names may change in English but look for something along those lines or in the same place as the ones in the image with the green ticks)

7.- SHARPENING TIME!: go to “Filter” 🠲 “sharpen” 🠲 “smart sharpen”

As I have mentioned before, the amount will depend on the gif you are making, there is no perfect formula for all the gifs, so you need to play around a bit to find the perfect setting for your specific gif. TIP 7: This is what I normally use: amount: between 250 and 300 / Radius: 0,3px - 0,4px or 0,5 (but never over 0,5) / noise: anything between 0 and 50, now if you have a very blurry scene you can go up to 100 👍 and finally select the option “Grussian blur”.

Tbh I never change the “shadows” and “lighting” settings (they are always 50 -50 -1) If you know how to use them or want to play around, then go for it…. I have no idea how to 🤣 oops.

8.- BLUR: sometimes the gifs look TOO sharp so we need to add a blur filter. so go to “filter” 🠲 “blur” 🠲 “surface blur”

then once again, depending on your needs, you can play around with the settings. TIP 8: I normally use 10-6 / 9-4 / 7-4 or 3 / etc. but I never go over 10.

Also if you are noticing that your gif is still looking a bit blurry or with imperfections, due to the quality of the video, the scene is too complicated, etc. then I recommend adding noise on purpose 🤣 hey! if you can’t fight against the noise then put it on purpose and make the gif with a bit of texture and colors, it will look nice too 👍 go to “filter” 🠲 “noise” and then add the amount you want.

9.- Now we are almost done, you can leave it like that if you want or you can add some extra steps and play around with the brightness, exposure, color balance, gradients, filters, etc. you can find everything on your right (the yellow circle). Here is up to you to explore and experiment, I never use the same, it changes every gifset I make.

10.- You can add your watermark, images, texts, paint with the brushes, or do anything else with your gif. but this time I will skip these steps, but if you need extra information about something, please feel free to ask, and I will gladly help you 😊.

TIP 9: Before you save your gif, please make sure all the things you added are in line with your gif “video frame” 🠲 move the little arrow so it will end perfectly with your gif, if the others are longer, it doesn’t matter, you can move them or you can leave them there, the important thing is that the line is perfectly in line with your gif.

11.- Now there is nothing left to do, it’s finally time to save it for the web. Go to “files” 🠲 “export” 🠲 “save for the web”

TIP 10: Now you have two options: you can view your gif in the “optimized version” tab where it will show you one option that you can edit. If you select this option then these are the settings I always use, the only option that changes is: using pattern (the gif will have a small invisible “net” that will make the gifs look more uniform, use this especially when the lights or shadows and colors look grainy) or you can use Diffusion (to make it smoother and move flowy) you can try both and see which one suits your gif best 👍

and then the easier second option is to click the “4 copies” tab on top of the gif, and it will show you 4 different options, then you just select the one you like the best and it’s ready!

12 .- THE LAST STEP!!! TIP 11: make sure your final gif is smaller than 10MB (Tumblr's limit) and hit SAVE! and you are ready!! ヾ(≧▽≦*)o

heyo, i've been following your works for a long time now and i genuinely love your creations, you put so much effort into them - they're so brilliant and polished, it's remarkable and inspiring.

i edit often but i am more used to working with gifs of live action media — comics is a whole new territory for me but i would still like to get into it. could i please ask for your tips and recs on how i can get started?

Aw, thank you very much! <3 I'll make a list of some different tips I think might be useful (but as with all things, experimenting is the best experience!), and also some links to different resources I often use for edits. Some of these you'll probably be familiar from gifs, but others will hopefully be new!

Gifmaking is a really good basis for making graphics; most of the same principals apply, particularly with colouring and playing with light with art! One of the best ways to make edits work together imo is having consistent colour themes to make all the edits look related and to work with one another, and those elements mirror in graphics and gifs.

The main thing that I think is different is the use of art. A lot of the time with art, you have to cut it out of panels by yourself, and sometimes colour something in yourself, if it's a sketch or something. You can use the subject selection tool in Photoshop/Photopea, but this really only works if there's a very clear background and subject; something more detailed or with multiple subjects doesn't work so well. I like to select using either the lasso tool or the polygonal tool, and then create a layer mask once my subject is fully selected! It's timeconsuming, but worth it to have those sharp and detailed pieces.

Using large pieces of art I think is really important for making sure edits are sharp. I generally try to only use stuff above 1000px, but generally anything below 700px is really difficult to use, especially if you're colouring in a sketch by hand.

Hand-colouring is another thing that's real difficult and time-consuming, but is worth it! Multiply and soft light are your best friends. Multiply for the blocks of colour, and soft light I like to use for adding a bit more depth for things like hair, or blush, etc. But play around with the different layer styles, you can get some interesting affects!

It's also useful to build up a little catelogue of styles or designs you like to incorporate into your work. A lot of graphic designers post their work to Pinterest, for example. Here's my own pinterest board of graphics I like!

And here are some of the resources/websites I use. Behance for general PSDs, fonts, textures. Search 'freebie' in the search bar to get those free resources! Dafont and freefonts.io are the two websites I use most to find fonts! Texturelabs is a great resource of free textures to use; white images generally go on multiply level, dark ones go on screen. Resource Boy has a bunch of free textures and pngs on there that you can use, I recently downloaded 70 different chain pngs from here. Designsyndrome is mostly paid stuff, but they do have a number of free pngs and effects that are cool to use. Comicartfans is a really handly website where a lot of people upload art from professionals. It works as a buying and selling site, but I use it often to find art by searching a character name in the searchbar. Unfortunately, not all of these are high quality, but generally you can use these to find larger resolutions by finding an artist's personal website.

Moodboard Commissions

Due to a lot of financial strain my family is under, I'm trying out doing things I love for a little money as much as I can and make ends meet.

Here's a few answers to some questions you might have!

What is a Moodboard?

A moodboard is a collage of images arranged in a pleasing fashion. It can be a general aesthetic or for a particular subject (like your favorite show, character, or ship!)

What can I use my Moodboard for?

When completed, you can choose to keep it all for yourself, post it with credit to myself, or I can post it for you (as long as it's allowed by tumblr guidelines). You can also post it on AO3 if it's for a fanfic, just give me a shout out! (AO3: TheRedHarlequin)

These moodboards will be for personal use ONLY. I do not own the images used in these moodboards. Though the majority will be royalty free, what I am actually selling is my labor, time, and aesthetic ability to customize something that makes you smile! If you want a commercial free moodboard, that is a separate conversation.

What can I request?

I accept almost ANY requests, including NSFW/Kink! I have extremely few hard nos and I will be upfront about them (scat and nsfw involving underage are the top two nos). I can skew NSFW that can pass the guidelines of tumblr for posting or I can make it full monty for just you and your friends' entertainment!

I found some cool art, can we use that?

Unless you have proof of explicit permission from the artist personally for the exact purpose of the board, I DO NOT use art from independent artists as it's a form of reposting.

What art I will use: widely recognized art studios (think Ghibli films), classical art (Mona Lisa, Van Gogh), scenes from a manga (Naruto, BNHA) and the like. Basically if you can look at something and go "Oh I know that!" then that's okay.

Faceclaims, Aesthetics, and References

Do you have an OC or TTRPG character you'd like a faceclaim and/or moodboard for? Would you like a collage you can give to your favorite artist to help them bring your character to life? Need references for that outfit or special something you want your artist to incorporate into that piece you've wanted done forever? I'm happy to help!

That all sounds fun! How much?

Simple: $6-$12

Large: $12-$25

Set of 3: $25 or $35

(Prices are negotiable but dictated by time & labor invested, see details)

Details:

Simple moodboards

Boards of 9 or less still images, with minimal work required, would be around $6. (Additional hours, late requests, adjustments, custom words, photo editing, font selection, etc can raise the price from $6 up to $12)

Large moodboards

Boards of 10+ images and/or containing gifs, with all the bells and whistles. These can include very specific faceclaims or references as they take longer, are more involved, and I have to justify my time spent when I could make more doing something else. I will give you a quote depending how involved you want your commission but the expected range is $12 up to $25.

Set of 3:

If you commission three 9 still image moodboards as a set (for instance if you want moodboards of your ship, I can do one for each character and then one with them both), the price will be a flat $25. This includes lots of adjustments!

For $35, I will do a set of 3 boards, each with 12 images, customizations and gifs will be included. You get the whole kit and caboodle X3!

I will do multiple check ins while the work is in progress to make sure you're getting an end result you are happy with!

Why do Gifs cost extra?

Because they are much harder to balance properly. What that means is that gifs can easily clash or throw off an entire board if not coordinated carefully. They're just harder to work with and take a lot more time usually. But they're definitely worth it and can give any board that extra oomph!

Payments will be accepted through PayPal once commission is completed.

(I do accept payments in installments for large boards and sets, but it must be paid in full within 30 days of completion of the commission.)

*Disclaimer/Summary: This completely Fictional Character is based on the way Lizzie plays old-fashioned Housewives. (Some inspo is taken from WandaVision, I Saw The Light, and Love & Death) This character is in no way a portrayal of any real-life people. Audrey Williams and Candy Montgomery were real people that Lizzie has portrayed for entertainment purposes in tv & film. This story is not about them. I just want to see Lizzie play a 70s-80s housewife that is secretly Gay and stuck in a religious small-town in the South. Today Shirley made lunch and brought it over in an adorable red checkered picnic basket. You are excitedly waiting in your living room until she gives you permission to enter the kitchen. You have heard about her famous cooking skills from almost everyone in this town.

You can hear cupboards opening and closing and are so tempted to try and sneak a peak but know better. She threatened you with no kisses if you didn’t stay put.

“Do you need help finding anything?”

“No, I’ve got it! I like the way Theo has organized the kitchen; it's similar to mine.”

You smile. “Oh good God! You can NEVER tell him that! He would gloat about it forever. It was such a huge ordeal organizing that damn kitchen.”

She laughed “Sounds like you two have a lot of fun.”

“Oh we are trouble honestly but we make it work.”

“Mmm-hmm.”

You heard the sound of a drink being poured and the glass cups clinked against the table and your excitement peaked. She cleared her voice and took on a more playful tone that accentuated her southern accent.

“Honey, lunch is ready!”

“Coming darling!”

You shot off the couch and rushed toward the kitchenet. As you rounded the corner you stopped dead in your tracks at the sight in front of you. She had shown up to your house in tight high waisted blue jeans and a red checkered shirt that matched her picnic basket. However as she stands next to the table she sports a dangerously low cut tiny little black nightgown that only goes to her mid thigh and a black see through shawl that goes to the floor.

“Wow, you look delicious.”

She smirks and your eyes widen as you realize you said that outloud. You stutter a bit, “I me-meant lunch looks…No I was right YOU look DELICIOUS.”

She plays with the shawl and moves toward what has become her chair. “Well, I’m finger licking good. I am.”

Your eyes widen in shock “Oh I KNOW you ARE!”

She shakes her head and sits down. “I think today you should get more than just a taste.”

You move to your chair sitting before your legs give out on you. “Shirley Carter, you are killing me!”

“Oh, I sure hope not. I kind of need you alive. Now come on, eat.”

“Yes ma’am!”

You moan at the taste of the wonderful meal she has made just for you. You would have exaggerated your reaction to the food regardless but it’s really that good.

“This is the best lunch I’ve ever had, Shirley! Truly this is a fantastic lunch. Thank you.”

Her smile brightens as she finishes the food in her mouth. “I’m glad you like it. I enjoy cooking.”

You nod “I can tell. You’d have to enjoy cooking to get this good at it.”

She laughs softly. “Next time I am teaching you how to cook something.”

“Oh really? You sure you’re ready to take on that kind of risk?”

“I can handle you.”

Her smirk is evil and so damn sexy.

“If you are gonna talk like that we are not going to be able to enjoy the rest of this food.”

“Is that so?”

“You are killing me!”

“I already told you. I need you alive.”

“Yet here you are continuing to try and murder me.”

She bites her bottom lip and smirks. “It’s not my fault you are so fun to mess with.”

You can’t contain your laughter and it makes her laugh with you. Light conversation and playful teasing continue as you both finish the delicious lunch and clean up. You cherish the compatibility the two of you have as you clean up. You can't stop glancing at her as you dry the dishes and put her dishes back in the basket. She catches your stare and you can feel your cheeks flush.

"Why the look?"

"You are just so beautiful. I just really like being around you."

She tilted her head to the side as she dried her hands. "Y/N."

You moved toward her and she turned her back to the island counter and leaned against it with a soft smile. You placed your hands on her hips softly. She moved her arms to rest on your shoulders.

"Do you understand how gorgeous you are?"

She bites her bottom lip and shakes her head no. "Hmm-mmm."

You pick her up and set her on the island counter. Her legs squeeze around you. You lean in and kiss her neck. "You are breathtakingly gorgeous."

You move your lips down to her collar bones kissing lightly. "You captivate me with everything you do."

Your lips travel down to her exposed cleavage kissing a bit more firmly. "I can't help but stare when you are around. You are the only thing I want to see."

You suck her skin leaving the lightest bruise and she moans as she runs her hands in your hair. She leans into your kisses arching her back ever so slightly into you. She is soft in your hands. Her long legs have pinned you close to her by wrapping around you tightly.

You nip a bit too hard and she throws her head back "AH!"

She pulls you away from her chest by your hair and her gaze is intense. Her pupils are wide leaving thin rings of green. "Fuck Y/N! Take me to bed right now."

You grab her hips and slide her to the edge of the counter and her legs squeeze around you tighter as you pick her up and hold her ass to keep her in your arms. She squeezes your shoulders and tucks her head in the crook of your neck. Her lips press against your skin softly at first. You manage to get to the hallway of your bedroom before your knees start to feel weak from her kisses. You press her up against a wall and take a deep breath. "Fuck, Shirley!"

Her mouth opens against your neck and she sucks and bites at your skin leaving marks. You grab at her ass tighter and rush toward your room. You push her up against the door roughly and she breaks from your neck to capture your lips. The kiss is passionate and hot. Her tongue dominates yours as she pulls at your hair. You manage to get the door open and rush to your bed. You go to set her down and fall on top of her when her legs keep a tight hold around your waist. She breaks the kiss and stares into your eyes. You smirk down at her. "Mmm you're going to have to let me go then."

You continue to kiss up her legs and get to her inner thighs then stop and lift yourself up to kiss her lips. Her hands tangle into your hair. You move your kisses down her neck and chest. She gets up and turns on the little radio you have on your vanity and then she moves to snuggle against your side. You wrap and arm around her holding her tight and close and she runs her fingers softly over your chest.

Time slows and you are not sure how long you lay there but you could spend the rest of your days like this. Just listening to the radio softly as you cuddle her in your bed naked and blissfully spent.

The song Jolene by Dolly Parton plays over the radio and you can’t stop the grin that takes over your face.

You sit up and straddle Shirley's hips as you begin to sing the lyrics to her with a playful tone.

“Your beauty is beyond compare with flaming locks of auburn hair, with ivory skin and eyes of emerald green, your smile is like a breath of spring, your voice is soft like summer rain and I cannot compete with you, Shirley.”

She laughs and you lean down to kiss her. You part but stay leaning over her. “It could literally be about you! Well minus the hair.”

You run your hands through her dark brown hair and smile. “Needs to be a bit more on the red side but I like this color.”

Her smile is adorable and you hope your mind is memorizing every detail of just how pretty she is when she's happy.

“I dyed my hair red once, for a bit, it was really long then too.”

“Oh I must see pictures of that! Please say you have pictures of that!”

“I may have some pictures but you have to promise not to make fun. I was going through a bit of a hippie phase.”

“We’ve all been through that phase.”

“Miss Dolly is right, well sort of, you could easily take anyone’s man or woman but Dolly should have written it like she was in love with Jolene.”

She tilts her head to the side as she looks up at you and you can see it in her softened gaze that she feels it too. You lean down and kiss her softly because looking at her loving gaze is too much right now.

“We should shower. I have to pick up the girls and now I need to find pictures in my scrapbook for you.”

You nod and get up. You offer her your hand and she takes it. You pull her up and squeeze her in your arms before leading her into the bathroom. The silly atmosphere you shared last time plays in your mind and makes you smile like an idiot at her. Luckily she gives you the same cheesy smile in return.

You grab the soap. “Can I wash your back?”

She nods and turns away from you. You want to memorize all the random freckles. You lather the soap and softly wash her back with sudsy hands. Her shoulders visibly relax and a soft sigh leaves her lips as she leans into your touch. You rub the soap over her shoulders but massage her muscles as you do it. Your hands travel lower and she sighs as you continue to massage her sore body. Her lower back feels tight and you apply a little more pressure making her breath out hot and shaky. You continue your efforts to her fine ass. “Mmm, Y/N.”

She turns around and bites her bottom lip as she looks at you “No funny business we haven’t got the time.”

You give her your best innocent smile “I was simply washing your back.”

She shakes her head but her smile gives her away. “Mmm-Hmm.”

You get more soap in your hands and run them over her shoulders and down her chest to her breasts. You squeeze them playfully with a smirk and continue down to her hips. You watch the soap and water drip down her body and can’t help but be jealous of the drops. Your thoughts are broken as she steps closer to you and lifts one of her long legs up to rest on the edge behind you. You massage soap down her leg and she sighs, closing her eyes for just a moment to enjoy the warm water and the touch of your hands. You do the same with her other leg and soak in the image of her as best as you can because something about water dripping down her skin is everything and your mind wants to keep this memory forever. She rinses off and you just watch in awe as her muscles flex. When she is all clean she moves from under the water and takes the soap from you which finally brings you back to reality.

She gestures with her index finger to turn around and you do as you are told. You relax as you feel ehr rub the soap over your shoulders and down your back. She massages you like you massaged her and playfully smacks your ass. You turn to look at her with a cheeky smile “Mrs. Carter!”

She looks around. “Who me? I didn’t do anything.”

“Oh sure!”

She puckers her lips trying to contain her smile and it makes your soul happy. She can be so serious sometimes but her silly side is everything. She continues washing your front and decides to continue her shenanigans as she giggles your breasts in her hands.

“Are you having fun?”

“Oh I’m having the time of my life.”

You grab her wrists and pull her closer kissing her silly crooked smile with your own smile playing at your lips. “You are lucky you are so cute!”

“Oh yeah?” She tilts her head “Does that mean I can get away with anything?”

“Like you didn’t already know that.”

“Mmm I mean I do but I like hearing it.”

“Oh of course you do. You just love to torture and tease me!”

“I would never!”

You shake your head at her sarcasm and splash water at her. She looks at you shocked and then splashes you with water and you both break out into laughter.

As you walk her to the front door you play with the picnic basket in your hands. You don’t want to say goodbye. You know the second she is out of your sights reality will come crashing down on you. Hell reality already is crashing down on you.

She takes the basket from you. “It’s been a pleasure.”

“Yeah.”

She sets the basket down on the side table you have by your front door and takes a step into your personal space. “Hey whats-”

“-Nothing.”

“Well, obviously it’s not nothing.”

She runs her thumb over your jawline and sighs. “What is it?”

“I-just.” You shake your head no and grab her hand removing it from your face. “I miss you already. You get to go back to your little family and I’m just left in an empty house.”

“I see.”

She sucks on her bottom lip for a second contemplating. “Why don’t you come over in 15 minutes? We can’t be like this, but I could show you my scrapbook and the girls like you. Maybe you could get them to do their homework.”

Your face brightens. “Are you sure? You were so worried about all this before.”

“Well, I've been thinking. We can be friends and you were right now one even noticed at tennis practice that you kept staring."

"I was being discreet!"

"Honey, you are so obvious. Luckily for us the small town minds are clueless."

She pecked your lips. "See you in, 15! Bring your own scrapbooks."

She grabbed her basket and turned to the door leaving with a pep in her step.

When you pull up to her house the girls are outside racing back and forth from tree to tree. When they see you they automatically race to you.

"Y/N!" "Y/N!"

They yelled in unison as they ran to hug you. The embrace made you smile and little did you know but Shirley was melting watching the encounter from the window.

"Race you to the door!"

You took off in a mad dash. "Losers have to do their homework!"

"No fair!" ~ "Cheater!"

You make it to the door in time to turn around and stick your tongue out at them. "Sorry girls I'm just lightning fast."

They ran into your arms together and in unison whined "You cheated!"

"I would never!"

You usher them inside to find Shirley coming down the stairs with a silly smile plastered across her beautiful face.

"Hi, Shirley! Found these two trouble makers outside they don't belong do you do they?"

"Hmm nope my girls are little angels. Couldn't be mine."

In unison. "MOM!"

You broke first laughing and they all joined in. "These two angels lost the race and are now going to go do some homework."

"Oh is that right?"

"Y/N cheated!" Marissa said.

"Yeah it was so not fair!" Madison added.

"I saw from the window it seemed pretty fair to me. Now scoot."

She shooed them with her hand and they ran off down the hall.

"Would you like some tea? Or a cookie, baked them yesterday."

"You had cookies and didn't bring any earlier! Yes I want a cookie!"

You follow her into the kitchen. Glancing around at all her decorative little things. You run into her as she stops abruptly. You step back quickly "sorry sorry."

You clutch at your bag and she turns with a soft smile on her lips. "It's okay."

She looked over your shoulder down the hall and pulled you to the corner of the kitchen. She leans in and pecks your lips and whispers "relax."

You nod and she pecks your lips quickly once more then lets you go. "Did you bring your scrapbook in this handy bag?"

She pulls on the strap across your front. "Sure did!"

"I can't wait to see yours."

She moved to the cupboard and grabbed two glasses. She fills them with iced tea and hands you one.

She turns to her kitchen island and grabs a bright orange Tupperware container. You follow her to the table that has some cute books set out on it. She sets the container down, takes a sip of her tea and sets it on a flower coaster.

You follow her lead and set your drink on another flower coaster. "Your decorations are cute, Shirley."

"Why thank you."

You pull your scrapbook out and set it infront of you as you take a seat. She smiles and sits next to you. She pulls a pink and orange book over and opens it. There in a pretty pink paper with hearts is a collage of pictures. Shirley has long red hair. She is dressed in oranges and reds and is just glowing. She looks so happy. She's pregnant in a few of the pictures with the girls and it says M&M born 1970 right in the center. Part of you wishes you had been here 8 years ago to see her in person but the other part of you is happy you didn't have to live through seeing her happily start her family.

"Wow you were not kidding about your hair."

"I've tried a variety of things."

She flipped through pages and books to show you as she spoke. "I did a sandy brown, really short for a while then went blonde for a bit. I tried a perm but I hated that."

You gawk at the pictures, she is so beautiful in all of them it doesn't matter what she's doing or wearing, what color or style her hair is, she looks stunning in every single one. "Wow you can pull off any look."

"Oh please let me see yours."

She takes your book and opens it smiling at your wedding pictures. You and your husband look adorable and very cute but in an innocent sort of childhood friends kind of way. Which now that Shirley knows makes her sort to hold back her laughs. "Wow you two look-"

"Ridiculous. I know."

"I was going to say cute. Thank you very much!"

"Oh sure."

"I was! You two look like you're playing dress up as kids but definitely cute."

"That's what it felt like honestly."

She nodded. You flipped through pages and pages sharing stories and laughs. You smile and compliment her on how perfect her girls are seeing their baby pictures and growing into the cuties they are now. They look just like her.

It truly isn't fair that you can't have this life with her. You'd give anything to just be John.

thank you vicky 🥺 i'll do top 5! i'm sorry this is so late but wincest wednesday is more a state of mind, right???? RIGHT!

starting this off with my soft rock playlist because i'm gonna fail to ever make one of these posts again--i had a really good time putting the playlist together with several discord pals, which was essential help! i have limited knowledge of the genre and i was able to find some gems with their help, so: thanks to y'all <3 i like the composite feel that comes with the several images of different dimensions + i tend to shy away from these paler/overlaid filter style edits, so it was nice to push outside my (very shadowy) comfort zone.

fourth is a tie between this edit from one of my long time favourite songs and this dead in the water gifset! i couldn't decide because i like the first one for the fun narrative switch right at the end that takes it from sam's POV to dean's, but the second one is one of my favourite episodes and has a fun grimy look to it. all good things...

my third fave is unclean in the biblical sense because it really is the sam thesis, as i see it. it's simple, it's clean, and it distills several very important parts of his character in those early seasons into four gifs, which i'm quite proud of! i've seen other versions of this quote with various scenes but none of them have really gripped me and had me nodding along, so i had to make my own.

#2 is this season four parallels post because a. it's the first gifset i finished and thought that i might actually be... good at this... and b. not enough people talk about these VERY deliberate parallels!!!! i LIVE for them.

my this is how you lose the time war post is my number one. i am really proud of the colouring being so different for the different eras but still looking cohesive in the full post, in large part because it's fucking HARD to try to match the colour from kripke era to later seasons. this one was a unique challenge because it's important to me to match my edits with the vibe/theme of the original work, and that book handles time non-chronologically in a way i knew i had to echo with my edit. i felt i had to try to capture the way sam is so cordoned-off, even to the number one person in his life-- sam kept the amulet for YEARS. that is INSANE. his expression when dean finds out he had it this whole time is brain bending. having that in the script was such a beautiful way to illustrate the way sam works, which is that he has his own way to keep himself accountable and to remember the things that shaped him, ways he would never bring up to another person-- the amulet symbolizes his love for dean, his rebellion against john, his personal failures in season 4-- it's in his pocket every day to remind him of what he and dean were-- and then in season 11, with his sentimentality stripped bare in front of dean, it becomes what they are, here and now. and that's really neat.

Hi there! I just want to make sure you know that I am not the same creator of that gifset, but I can definitely explain how this person made that gifset.

This is the Natasha gifset, as you can see it’s gorgeous.

Before I begin I want to start by saying it’s totally fine to take inspiration from other gifs, to see something that someone has done and replicate it in your own way. With giffing, at the end of the day, we’re all using the same source material, the same amount of scenes and minutes of screen time to create something so there are going to be similarities in gifs across the same fandom. However, it is never okay to steal someone’s gifs and repost them as your own, nor is it okay to directly and blatantly copy someone’s gifset frame for frame to post even if you make the gifs yourself. Copying to learn a technique is fine so long as that gifset stays in your drafts or stays in your groupchat.

It is always a good idea to give credit where credit is due when giffing, in that if you use a text post/tweet/a specific set of graphics or theme, to credit the person you got the idea from by linking back to where you got it.

I’m assuming you’re asking specifically about the third gif. The process is going to be similar to the one I detailed here, however the gif on the left has either a grayscale or black and white filter on it, or you can even open a Hue/Sat layer and take out as much saturation as you want. It all depends on the look you’re going for!

The gif on the right has cyan added to it, whether they did that with a brush or layers idk and I’m not going to try to recreate it exactly, so if you want to know for sure I recommend asking them. But I can show you a similar process with Photopea, which is what I’m assuming you’re wanting (although to be completely honest I primarily use Photoshop now😂😭)/

Lately in my own gifs I’ve been doing blend types other than Lighten (like Screen for example), and this kind of looks like that but I could be wrong! Again, it all just depends on what kind of look you want, the vibe or aesthetic you’re going for.

The tutorial I make for you will use Lucas from Stranger Things S4 because that is the only live action on my hard drive at the moment😂😭 I mainly gif anime now (anime sideblog: @icythot-bakubitch) and I could absolutely do a tutorial with it but it won’t come out the same as what you’re wanting to see.

This tutorial is made on the basis that you already know 1) how to make a gif 2) how to make overlays and 3) have a good sense of familiarity with photopea/photoshop.

Please remember that this gif is made with Photopea and not Photoshop, so there is going to be a deficit in quality compared to the set you’ve shown me. Your quality will come out much better if you’re able to use Photoshop.

Basically all I really did was add a Black and White layer to the bottom gif, making adjustments to keep as much quality as possible and adjusting the brightness to my taste. The original gif is already pretty dark, I probably should have picked something else but for a tutorial I’m not that pressed.

On the top gif, I used Selective Color and Hue/Sat to change the cyan of his background to purple.

Using a soft round brush I cleaned up their faces and got rid of any parts of the background that I felt was too distracting.

Attached below is a side by side of the original and recolor respectively, and then a screenshot of my layers.

Again, this is my way of doing things. It’s going to look different from someone else’s. Focus on finding a style that you like and that works for you. Just because a style of giffing is popular or something a lot of people are doing doesn’t mean that you have to do that.

I’m sure there are better or more efficient ways of doing things as well! And there isn’t one set way of doing things, this is not a be all end all of doing overlays or giffing.

If you have questions regarding the Natasha set more specifically, I highly recommend asking the creator personally. All I’m doing is explaining the recoloring process when it comes to overlay gifs as it applies to Photopea.

Unless you want people to just copy or repost them, which would be a douche move, but not as much of a douche move as you trying to control the way people feel about some scenes from a show that you happened to slap together in a post. Your own fan art would be one thing but like, lol at this for real. Come on now.

dear nonnie, I sure will. I'm gonna explain how I made this:

(this gif is not pretty I know, thats not the point here)

I am however. NOT going to explain how I colour as that is a seperate thing on itself. this will simply be a basic gif tutorial. if you do want me to explain colouring all you gotta do is ask.

I use OBS (1920 x1080, 60 fps) and Photoshop. to make gifs.

I'm going to break this into 7 parts.

importing

fixing frames

timeline

sharpening

sizing

colour

export

now. onto the tutorial.

importing

so, I use, frames to layers, some people use timeline, everyone has different ways this just works best for me. so, for this you go to

edit -> import -> video frames to layers.

this is the view you will get when you do this.

the little nibs on the side you can use to make a selection of what part you want to gif.

then your gif is imported if you dont see this timeline on the bottom of your screen

make sure you add it by going to:

window -> timeline

make sure it's there otherwise you cant work with it obviously.

2. fixing frames

now you have a bunch of frames, here a BUNCH of choices come. how long do you want your gif to be, how quick do you want your gif to be etc etc.

tumblr does have a size limit so the more frames you add the smaller the gif has to be and the shorter the bigger it can be. I prefer my gifs to be from 60-100 frames per gif, this is the most satisfying for me.

also because I record in 60 fps I dont have to slow down my gif BUT if you do want to do that you can by clicking on the little three lines on the right of you timeline, click on 'select all frames' and then you can change the frame rate from 0,02 or whatever it might be to anything faster 0.01 or slower 0.05 (or more) eventually you'll understand the different effects this can have, this takes trial and error.

3. video timeline

now, make sure to delete any and all frames you dont want added if a gif is going to be devided in two I make sure its about 200 frames and I have my 100th frame selected.

when you're happy with how fast and long it is we're going to convert to video timeline. you do this by again, going to the little three lines and clicking on convert to timeline. you'll wait a second and then you'll see this

after you have your timeline, we're going to change all your individual frames into a smart object, we do this so its free for changes and edits. what you do is you go to your layers, select every one of them by clicking the bottom, holding shift and clicking the top layer. you right click and click on 'convert to smart object'

4. sharpening.

now this is where choice and style starts to come in even more. I personally like it when my gifs are crunchy and the sharpening is visible but smooth.

for sharpening we use 'smart sharpen' you get here by going to

filter -> sharpen -> smart sharpen

and here you kinda mess around with the look that you like, I add to levels of smart sharpen, which look like this.

5. sizing

so, tumblr hates us and has some very specific sized that it will accept, these sizes are 1:1 aka square and then 5:7 and 16:9

I normally stick to 5:7, I like this size and I can use it horizontally or vertically, try and stick to these sizes, they're fixed sizes on photoshop so you can easy use that to stick to them.

6. colour

so this is where I'm not going to go in to deeply, colouring is a whole genre of editing on its own but I'll give you some of my must know tricks.

LEVELS/CURVES

so, levels and curves are used to add depth and contrast, if you use the little pipet on the left side of the adjusment layers and use that to click on your deepest black it will do a lot of work for you (this works the same for levels as curves) I personally always start my colouring with this and they move around curves and levels to see what I like

COLOUR BALANCE

this is a basic colour fix, with this if a video is extremely yellow, you can add blue or when something is purple you can add green etc etc, this is basic stuff to neutralize your colouring

some of my favorite adjusment layers are hue/saturation, selective colour and channel mixer, I recommend trying some extreme colouring and doing a bunch of experience to get used to working with all these adustment layers

7. export

and now, last but not least, export, this is the 'easy part' if you go

file -> export -> export for web legacy

you get this screen. these are also my settings, play around with some of these and see what you like, you dont really touch

preview

metadata

quality

a lot of people change the size of the gif before export but I dont like how the gif looks when I do that so I go to this lil part of my export settings

and I make them smaller, most of the time I start with 700 x 500 but I basically just look at this little part.

until the gif is under 8m

AND THATS IT!

make sure you click play during your export to make sure there are no mistakes or bugs in your gif.

RULES

one: i am changing my approach to my blog and how i run it because i want this hobby to be fun again. what does this mean? it means that this will be a low frills semi-selective, mutuals only blog that will be writing focused. aside from the occasional plotting call, memes will be a great way to break the ice.

two: i reply to memes as if i was sending a starter, especially if we do not have active threads going. because of this i participate in what i call "3-strikes-you're-out." meaning if there is a pattern of my meme replies not get a like or even a comment let alone a reply, i will stop interacting with you for a while. if the pattern continues, i will soft block. i'm here to write, i don't appreciate wasting my time or writing.

three: speaking of writing ... i am slow when it comes to replies as i am a full time student and i am currently volunteering, please be patient with me. because of my limited time for this hobby i will be relying on heavily on the queue to post most things. formatting is limited to small text, bold, and italicized font with the occasional icon thrown in.

four: i give the energy i get. which means that if i have made plenty of attempts to interact with you but there hasn't been any ooc communication regarding our thread or my messages go unanswered, i will drop the thread. if you wish to pick up an old thread all you have to do is reach out and let me know. however, if this becomes a pattern i will soft block.

five: due to the nature of this character, mature themes such as but not limited to drinking, mentions of war, fighting, fictionalized political scenarios, torture, etc will be present. follow at your own risk. i do not write with anyone under 21.

six: this blog is multiverse and multiship, meaning that romantic relationships will never overlap with one another unless specifically plotted that way. and while i am a huge fan of shipping, romantic connections are based on chemistry and reciprocated interest.

seven: speaking of reciprocated interest... i send memes to people randomly on my dash but if i notice that none of the ones i send are getting a reply or if i send but never receive, i will eventually stop sending memes to those specific people. again, i give the energy i get.

eight: smut may make an appearance however i will only write it with those over 21. while i do like writing smut 1) that is not the focus of this blog and 2) if my writing partner(s) does not feel comfortable writing it out, fade to black is always an acceptable option.

nine: i do not have a banned fc list because i do not have the time or energy for that. the only two fcs i do not want to see no matter what are an.a d.e ar.mas and sca*lett joh*nsson. please do not tag me in things with sca*lett as her version of the character is not the one i portray. i will do by best to try and tag things accordingly. i will use suggestive / and suggestive cw along with nsft tw as i see fit. if i forget to tag something, i swear it is not on purpose. please simply message me or send an ask to let me know.

ten: i do not and will not participate in call out posts as it has been shown time and time again that they do not work. i will occasionally vent about my frustrations re the rpc and my experiences which i try and tag with vent / or vent tw.

eleven: credit for the lovely pinned banner is to zanzabug with tweaks to coloring by me. main psd used is by discopada on deviant art with heavy adjustments by me. all icons, edits and gifs posted are created by me.

Library Triage! kinda?

I have soooo many library items checked out right now and I’m making progress on returning none of them; between working overtime and spending way more of my downtime than usual just incessantly watching the same clips on YouTube, I am not reading very much. But I can’t seem to let anything go. So this (even more than usual) is just me trying to make sense of everything so I don’t lose any items this time...

Part 1: DVDs

No Escape: I have watched this already (twice now in this checkout period, including the one with commentary!) so really I should be done with it, but I’m not. I want it close at hand. It’s too good.

The Hollow Crown: Complete Series: the gifs have been promising so we’re gonna have fun with this. Eventually. Right now my ability to handle it is taking one look at a still from any of them and immediately turning into a cartoon with eyes/heart ballooning out of my body, so I am not yet calm enough for that.

The Night Manager: I’m pretty sure this is actually the project I’m going to target next. I know what I gotta shield my eyes about but I also think I can manage the rest of it, and I’m finally interested in the larger story.

Thor 1-3 + The Avengers: for when I’m ready to continue my Loki journey.

(And yet, I’m still over here like, “I gotta go check out those other two movies I want to see. I gotta.”)

Part 2: Books

After Perfect - Maan Gabriel: 2 months ago, I pulled several titles off my Goodreads TBR that I thought I might like to try soon. And then...Hiddleston Spiral. Library is already down to 1 copy of this small-press 2021 release (they started with 3 or 4), and I’m genuinely afraid it’s gonna get weeded entirely very soon. But still, I think I’m too far off course now to be in the right mood for this particular romance, which is rare (age-appropriate student/creative writing professor, except the professor is the younger one), so I want to save it.

Harry Potter & The Order of the Phoenix (illustrated): I’ve decided not to reread this one yet, I’m just looking at the pictures, but even that I can’t commit to doing. I have been waiting more than a year for this release to get into my hands; I have to be ready to appreciate them. Block out an hour or so to observe/maybe reread select passages/jot notes on my faves.

The Hungry Place - Jessie Haas: a children’s pony book by an author I like that I really thought I would be more excited about/devour quickly, but instead I’m kind of blocked up about it. Like. There is some sadness here before the happy parts, IDK if I’m ready for it!

Just Gus - McCall Hoyle: speaking of children’s books, a cute one about a dog, companion novel to Stella. It really won’t take me more than 90 minutes to read. Why do I keep putting it off. [edit: go me, I actually started this one in the brief interim between queuing this post and its appearance]

The Essex Serpent - Sarah Perry: still haven’t even opened it, but I WILL whether I fully read it or not.

(Meanwhile: those 20+ books I just bought and was kinda planning to read at least some of soon...) (p.s. I actually have my latest sale post written up! I just wanted to take photos)

+ 5 books I’ve technically read but don’t wanna give back because I love them and love paging through them

+ 3 Taylor Swift CDs -- Reputation for Getaway Car (I don’t think I’m ready to explore further yet, but I have as yet been too lazy to rip it); and Folklore and Lover to play in the car, the former’ cause I don’t own it and the latter ‘cause IDK where I put my copy and am frankly too lazy to look. :P

Putting this under a read more because I simply cannot shut up 💕

What are your top 3 favorite sets you’ve made? (In no particular order)

I’m cheating and using one for these 2 Viktor sets because they’re the same theme - this post season 3 set, this pre season 3 set. I’ve just always really loved the theme of “Viktor is the bomb” and I’ve saved that post-s3 set quote for so many years and I held off using it until after season 3 and was excited that it was still relevant. The colors in that set just make me happy and I’ve tried so many times to use it again and it never works the same. And for that pre season 3 set, I think that’s when I was really starting to teach myself blending? So I had so much fun making it. I just love giffing Viktor in general, I think there are so many themes to play with while editing that always really inspires me when I make something for him.

This "favorite TV show" gifset of TWD: World Beyond is one of my favorites because I think it's probably the first time I ever did a layout set? And it took me sooooo long to do it and I had to make so many decisions because I love every episode and every character so trying to make everything, everyone, every theme all fit together was so hard, but I was really happy and it makes me happy to look at it because the show is my comfort show. I also really tried to focus on the panel being about family, science/fighting, love, and growing up, which are very much the main themes of the shows so I was happy with it!!

My Luther set + a quote from The Chosen Ones. This is probably my favorite Luther set ever, because I read this book and I wrote down so many notes on it screaming “Luther, Luther, Luther,” so I always wanted to make a set with him ft. this book. I was very strategic on the scenes I used based on what I think about him in my own head but in particularly, the last 2 gifs are very important to me (’desire something’ over a shot of his smile fading after the kids that were looking up to him then started laughing at him after he made a fool of himself + the shot of him thinking he’s in a better place now that he’s away from his father yet he’s still just in the same cycle of being exploited. And “wasn’t sure he was capable of it” with shots of him thinking he’s finally free / alive but the next day he’s just full of shame and still sad... I hold these two gifs so close to my heart). Also, this is definitely the set that began my love story with the gradient map. I’m not too fond of the typography anymore but this quote will forever be my Luther quote. Also, I know Luther always wears blue and that’s probably what people associate him with, but for some reason I’ve never wanted to use blue for him... but I am so pleased with this particular blue/purple shade for him, so he’s allowed some blue now <3

Klaus + You Look Like Death. When I opened photoshop, it was supposed to be a Five gifset.... and then when I decided it was Klaus, it started off as dark green and purple, so I literally don’t know how I got here? But Klaus + vibrancy is something so personal and he deserved it, and I loved Robert’s foreword so much and it was so fitting after season 3, so I’m very very happy with how this turned out. He’s one of those characters that just has so many fun shots/scenes to work with and I definitely want to gif him more.

My recent Five set. This time when I opened photoshop I actually let it be about Five. He has sooo many aesthetically pleasing and tragic shots that it really is so fun to gif him and I’m glad I finally did. I’ve always appreciated Five as a character but ofc following you has made me love him even more, I love your love for Five 😌

This is my “I thought this was a top 5 not a top 3″ disclaimer because I’ve once again cheated when you asked me top anything, but <3 anyway this was so TUA heavy so honorable mentions for my father’s day set for my favorite TV dad ever, this Tracy set, this Luther set, this Alden set

Where or from whom did you learn how to gif?

I’m a professional graphic designer, so technically, I learned in college... but obviously my day job is very different than any kind of giffing I do on tumblr. My work giffing is pretty bland in comparison and I often work with static images rather than videos, so it’s such a change of pace to gif here. I started giffing on tumblr though basically out of spite because so many of my favorite characters are either hated for no reason or just minor characters who don’t get much love, and I was tired of not finding anything in their tags, so I started giffing. Most of the things I’ve learned have come from different tutorials on tumblr (and bless them all because I absolutely don’t ever know how to explain anything I do, so all my love to the people who can articulate it so well that other people can learn from them).

Also my friend @felixcarlucci and I kind of started learning how to gif alongside each other so we exchange a lot of helpful tips and I’ve learned a lot from him too!

What is your favorite tool/adjustment layer in Photoshop?

Selective color my beloved!!! I also really, really love gradient map and I’ve been relying on it so much lately... I cannot help myself (currently working on a Sloane set with gradient maps and the coloring scheme for her is just making me vibrate, I’m excited to finish it).

summary - jess comforts you after a restless night

“c’mon, pick up, pick up,” you muttered as you laid by the phone, praying that your boyfriend was also having a sleepless night, or was still for other reasons.

“hello?” jess picked up after the fifth trill.

“oh, thank god,” you muttered. “y/n, what’s up? it’s one in the morning,” jess asked.

“i’m having a lot of trouble sleeping. every time i try to sleep i feel so uncomfortable. i have weird dreams and i just wanted to talk to you,” you explained.

“i’m sorry,” jess sighed groggily. “it’s fine. i don’t know why my brain and body won’t shut up. i know it’s fall break, but i’d still like to get a decent amount of sleep,” you huffed.

“let me see if i can help,” jess said. “please do,” you exhaled deeply.

you heard some rustling from his end before he talked again.

“your folks still in south carolina?” he asked. “yep, and won’t be back until tomorrow night,” you answered. “great,” jess said, a hint of a smile in his voice.

you didn’t think anything of it, though. it was best not to question him and his devious plans. you would always find out later, anyways.

“it’s really weird not having them here. i know i’m almost an adult, but it’s still weird to be alone here. like, this house is too big for just one person. it feels so cold and lonely and… ah, i’m creeping myself out.” your heart started to race and you shrunk back in your bed, finding comfort in your warm blankets.

“don’t think about that. think about… all of the cute decorations your mom is bringing back to you.”

“mm, yeah, i am excited for that. i love souvenirs,” you smiled. “i know you do. you better not break those, though. remember that one keychain i bought you when i went to michigan with my mom, and you somehow broke it by dropping it?” jess teased.

“ah, yes! but that wasn’t my fault. it was made poorly,” you giggled. “mhm, sure. you just don’t want to admit you’re clumsy,” jess stated.

“well, because i’m not!” you denied. “yeah, when you’re not clumsy, pigs will fly,” jess snorted.

“i thought you were here to make me feel better, not worse,” you pouted. “oh, i’m sorry, bubs. you know it’s all in good fun, though,” he said. you could hear his smirk.

“yeah, i know,” you smiled.

you frowned as you heard footsteps from outside. twigs were snapping, leaves crackling; it was like you were in your own stephen king book.

“jess,” you called out wearily. “what’s wrong?” jess asked. “i-i think someone is outside my window,” you whispered. “i’m going to hang up, and-and call the police.”

“no, y/n! it’s me!” jess exclaimed. you then heard a knock on your window, the same sound coming from his end of the line.

“what?” you jumped out of bed, running to your window, gasping to see jess down below, holding a few pebbles. he was in a wife-beater and blue and green plaid pajama pants. a smile lit up your face and you hung up the phone, hastily pushing the window open. “what are you doing here?” you whisper-shouted.

“well, you said you couldn’t sleep and that you wanted me to be here, so here i am,” he grinned.

you laughed, “i meant on the phone, silly.” “oh, so you’d rather me just go back home?” he tilted his head.

“no! i just… you are just full of surprises, mariano,” you sighed dreamily. “why, thank you. now, hold this ladder,” he said, putting the ladder against your wall.

“you brought a ladder?” you raised a brow. “yeah, how else was i supposed to get up through your window?” he smirked.

“you can just walk through the door, you know.”

“and that would ruin this romeo and juliet thing i got goin’ on.”

“i didn’t know you were such a romantic,” you teased. “you know you love it,” he winked.

you moved back so he could climb into your room. once he got in, you shut the window, then turning your attention to him.

“hello, beautiful,” he grinned at you. your body warmed under his gaze and you looked at him shyly, your eyelids lulling shut. your brain and body seemed to finally relax from just him being in your vicinity. it was magic how someone you loved could make you go from scared and lonely to warm and fuzzy.

“hey, handsome,” you grinned back.

his hand reached up to your face, cupping your cheek. his thumb ran across your cheekbone back-and-forth. you nuzzled into his touch, looking into his eyes with sparkling, dazed eyes. his other hand gripped your hip, caressing your skin through your over-sized tee. you watched his big, pretty brown eyes waver from your eyes to your lips. you both started to lean in, your noses rubbing together. your breathing stopped momentarily as his lips brushed against yours. so soft and gentle, you could faint.

his lips engulfed yours in a wet, tender kiss. you sighed contently, your hands crawling up his arms and up to his disheveled hair. your fingers ran through his raven locks, cradling his head closer to yours. his hand that was on your cheek went to the back of your head, running his fingers through your tangled hair.

he pulled away slowly after a few more moment, eyes fluttering open. “wanna go back to bed and cuddle?”

“yes, please,” you nodded eagerly.

he slipped his hand into yours as you led him to your bed. you both climbed in, you laying you head on his chest as soon as he got settled. you closed your eyes, bunching up his shirt in your hands.

“feel better?” he asked. “mhm,” you nodded.

“are you going back to sleep?” he asked. you hummed in thought, peering up at him. “maybe in a few minutes. i want to stay awake for as long as possible while you’re here.”

“you should go to sleep now, baby. i’ll be here when you wake up in the morning.”

“you better,” you pouted. “of course, dove.” he sat up, bringing his lips to your forehead.

you closed your eyes, butterflies fluttering in your chest. he laid back down on your pillow, bringing his arm up and sliding it behind his head.

“so, what exactly is making you uncomfortable when you try to sleep?” he asked. “i’m either too hot, too cold. my shirt, like, wraps around my body and suffocates me. oh, and the washing machine is going and it keeps waking me up. it’s creeping me out and stuff.”

“i’m sorry to hear that. well, you know, if the sock goblin jumps out of the washer and dryer and makes its way up to your room, i’ll protect you.”

you giggled, looking up at him. “why, thank you. my knight in shining armour.”

“you know me,” he remarked.

“did i wake you up?” you asked, worry suddenly clouding your mind. “kind of. i had just gotten finished with reading and was trying to go to sleep,” he explained.

“oh, i’m sorry.”

“no worries. i’ll sleep better here anyways.”

“mmm, always the charmer.” “i get it from my dad,” he snorted.

“you sure you didn’t get it from you mom’s side? you know, from luke and them?” you teased.

he grimaced, “don’t even start.” you giggled, “you love me.”

“that i do,” he confirmed.

“well, do you mind doing some more reading? help me go to sleep?” you asked.

“of course not,” he nodded. he turned his head to your nightstand, picking up the color purple. “i thought you had already read this?”

“it’s one of my favorites,” you yawned and shrugged. he chuckled, “mine, too.”

he opened to the page where you had placed your book mark. he held the book open with one hand, stroking your head with the other. he started to read from the top of the page, his voice changing pitches as he read the dialogue between characters.

his voice was music to your ears. it was low, raspy, but mellow. his eyes followed the words, rapidly going from one sentence to another. he spoke smoothly, barely any pauses of stuttering. it was amazing how fluid he was.

“here’s the thing, say shut. the thing i believe. god is inside you and inside everybody else. you come into the world with god. but only them that search for it inside find it. and sometimes it just manifest itself even if you not looking, or don’t know what you looking for. trouble do it for most folks, i think. sorrow, lord feeling like shit. it? i ast. yeah, it. god ain’t a he or a she, but a it.”

“shug is a genius,” you mumbled. “that she is,” jess agreed.

he kept on reading. this was your favourite letter that celie wrote in the book. there was so many lessons to learn from the color purple. so much truth in the words that celie wrote to nettie and god. you had always read the color purple once a year, around this time. not reading it would be like caffeine withdrawal. it was even better now since jess was reading to you.

his fingers twirled your hair around his fingers, massaging your scalp. you breathed in deeply, his masculine, sweet scent filling your nostrils. you breathed out, shoulders falling up and down dramatically. you closed your eyes, basking in his voice, his chest rising and falling, his fingers that were now gently scratching your back. the pads of his fingers crawled up your back, diving under your shirt. you shivered in pleasure at his warm touch, your muscles going limp.

“i believe god is everything, say shug. everything that is or ever was or ever will be. and when you can feel that, and be happy to feel that, you’ve found It.”

“this is making me cry,” you laughed softly. jess looked down at you, smiling fondly. his hand went back up to your head, running his fingers through your hair. “powerful stuff, huh?”

“it is to me,” you nodded. “well, it is to me, too,” jess said.

you laughed,��“yeah, right. you’ve read this book like, once, and you didn’t even read it. you just skimmed.”

“well, i might have to take another look at it after tonight.”

“you can borrow my copy,” you offered. “just don’t write in it in, okay? you’re annotating drives me crazy.”

jess chuckled, “i’ll do my best.”

you sat up, your elbow holding you up. “if i see even a tiny dot of ink, you will never see your records again.”

jess grinned, admiring your barred teeth and furrowed brows. “yes, ma’am.”

you leaned up and pressed a chaste kiss to his lips. you laid your head back down on his chest, closing your eyes once again.

“you’re like, my personal pillow, you know? so comfortable and warm.” you snuggled deeper into his chest.

“well, i’m glad to be of service,” he rubbed your back.

you sighed contently as he massaged your shoulders, working out all the knots and kinks that had developed from midterms last week.

“thank you,” you said. “well, i’m your boyfriend. this is what i’m supposed to do, you know,” he shrugged,

“no,” you shook your head slowly. “you could’ve just stayed on the phone with me. talk to me about your book and how much you hate working at the diner. but no, you came here in the middle of the night, carrying a ladder. you are just the best.”

“i love you, y/n,” he spoke softly. “i would do anything. even if that means carrying a ladder for a mile.”

you smiled as you began to lull to sleep. you clutched his tank top, inhaling his scent one more time. jess peered down at you, watching you with loving eyes as you fell into a deep sleep. he smiled, his hand returning to your scalp. he entangled his fingers in your soft locks, massaging your scalp once more.

“goodnight, bubs. sweet dreams.”
