On July 1st 1505 the seal granted by Edinburgh Town Council to the Incorporation of Barbers and Surgeons to practise their craft.
The barbers in Edinburgh were associated from an early date with the surgeons of the town, and the two were united in a single Incorporation of Surgeons and Barbers in 1505.
Over the course of the seventeenth century splits formed between the ‘simple barbers’, ‘barber-chirurgians’ and ‘chirurgians’. Despite a long association, the barbers would feel increasingly marginalised, with their privileges and scope of their work curtailed by the surgeons, including office-bearing in the Incorporation and their barbering restricted to the suburbs.
The surgeons would formally strengthen their position in 1694 when the terms of the Seal of Cause were redefined., this new ratification, being confirmed in Parliament in 1695, gave the surgeons “full power over all persons exercising surgery, pharmacy or barbery within the bounds of the city of Edinburgh”.
Moreover, whereas the barbers had previously held the same rights of surgeons, they were now ignored completely in favour of the apothecaries, thereby creating the ‘surgeon-apothecary’. As such, the barbers had neither any say in the administration of the Incorporation, nor were they entitled to benefit from the fees they contributed as members.
Resentments caused by such loss of control through unequal division of governing power climaxed in 1722, when the Barbers formally separated from the Incorporation by decree of the Court of Session. The same year saw the formation of the Society of Barbers of Edinburgh (sometimes known as the Corporation of Barbers). The Society of Barbers ceased its operations in 1922. In addition to shaving and hair-cutting, some barbers (but not all) were also wigmakers. Some of them could dress wounds, lance boils, remove moles, warts and fistulas, bleed their customers (intentionally or otherwise), extract teeth and apply leeches. They also sold perfumes and toiletries to help make ends meet.
The Incorporation of Barbers and Surgeons is now known as the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

“WOULD GIVE DEATH TO THE INCURABLE,” Owen Sound Sun Times. May 8, 1931. Page 8. ---- Advocates Painless Death Sleep for Imbeciles and Sufferers from Incurable Diseases ---- (Canadian Press Despatch) CHICAGO, Ill., May 8 - Administration of a painless death sleep to imbeciles and sufferers from incurable diseases was advocated by the Illinois Homeopathic Medical Association in a resolution drafted to day for submission by its legislative committee to the general assembly.
Dr. William Alva Guild, committee chairman, said he regarded Euthania, or administration of the death sleep, as a further step in the increasingly liberal viewpoint in medical practice.
"All medical groups are true to the thesis of prolonging human life," he said, "yet the question arises whether under certain circumstances, the prolongation of life would be advisable. And we have many patients who suffer from incurable diseases."

Some good news! The AMA is getting on the right side of some important stuff this week:
I’m the first to bring out snide, “gender affirming care is GOOD?!?????” And “the BMI is racist, fatphobic junk science?!???? CALL THE PRESSES!!!!” comments but I’m taking a sec to acknowledge this is actually really, really good.
The AMA is the largest professional association of medical physicians and carries enormous sway and power. We need them to move the needle on this shit, even if it is frustrating they feel years behind.

Earlier this week the trade union for doctors and medical students in the UK issued a warning about the number of doctors that have had to quit or reduce their hours due to long covid – the number was one in five. This story was covered in a limited way in a couple of places, which while not good enough was still a welcome jolt of covid reality in a landscape of denial. But tellingly, the media ignored something else the British Medical Association said. Something angry, something as equally demanding of attention, perhaps even more so than the headline statistic. Addressing the current spread of covid, particularly in healthcare settings, they said, “Infection control guidelines are fundamentally flawed: SARS-CoV-2 is airborne. It is outrageous that three-and-a-half years into this pandemic, staff and patients are still, knowingly and repeatedly, being exposed to a level-3 biohazard – a virus known to cause brain damage and significantly increased risk of life-threatening blood complications even in those recovered.” The union entrusted by 173,000 doctors and medical students in the UK to speak on their behalf is angrily castigating politicians and decision makers for refusing to face reality. The reality of covid as an airborne virus, and its reality as something much nastier than a cold or flu. They are demanding the reintroduction of infectious disease controls, and explicitly calling out covid as a brain damaging virus, and equivalent in its danger and infectiousness to yellow fever or West Nile virus.

tfw a cishet person describes a piece of media as having problematic representations of queerness & you gotta fight the urge to go on a rant about it's nuance in depicting queerness and the reasons why it is so powerful and important for so many queer people and how trying to label any "outdated" or "complicated" versions of queerness as problematic/offensive is just making it more palatable for cishet liberals

The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) is deeply concerned about any government proposal that restricts access to evidence-based medical care, including the Alberta government’s proposed restrictions on gender-affirming treatments for pediatric transgender patients. Canadians have a right to make personal choices about their health with the support of their families, the guidance of licensed, regulated health professionals and free from political interference. Exploring and determining one’s sexual orientation and gender identity is part of normal childhood and adolescent development. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to treating patients experiencing gender dysphoria. An approach that restricts the most appropriate care options for some patients has the potential to cause permanent harm.

Hey, for real? Can we stop using "biting" to describe what Wilbur did to Shelby? Because I think "assault" is a much better word. She explicitly revoked her consent, and then he hurt her more. Wilbur assaulted Shelby.
The problem isn't the biting. That's a neutral action that can be loving, can be gentle, can be consented to.
He fucking assaulted her. There are memes about it because it apparently seems childish and funny, and it's not. She asked to stop being hurt and he did not stop.

Oh look, a consensual workplace relationship is afoot.

i have an idea for a character design but what animals are usually associated with medicine??? the most common answer i got was snake, but i also thought of lab rats/mice, rabbits etc
#snake has the longest history with medicine especially since its shown on the rod of asclepius and the myths around venom#i also didnt know this but their shedding skin is referenced as symbols of rebirth and growth while their appearance resembles an#umbilical cord which gives it a really strong connection to health in some cultures.. although if i had to think abt modern medicine and#pharmacies the first thing i think of is white lab mice like pinky and the brain. for some reason i also thought of rabbits#bc of how its used for anti animal testing logos but thats more loose. however i did learn that the jade rabbit is shown to#use a pestle and mortar to create medicine in some stories so that could work...???? but its not as well known i think#i also thought of possums but that was more of an irony thing. same for bats but both are ironically really resistant to disease and act#as carriers. a death symbol like vultures or ravens/crows might work with a plague doctors mask but i feel#like that isnt the vibe im going for. black cat would be interesting considering superstition but im also on the fence abt that#actually what else is associated with medicine?? normally its stuff like pills crosses bandaids syringes etc#doctors coats and gloves.. especially plague doctor masks or medical masks in general but not much else huh#hand sanitizer and tissues.. pill bottles... blue nurse uniforms.. gauze and casts with signed names... hmmmm/.........#nurse dresses..??? sure?? i also see scalpels and knives but thats more for like. horror doctors for scary stories#im going for cute maybe even regular ass doctor vibe. like harvey sdv. or tony tony chopper#yapping

On November 29th 1599 The Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons was  granted its charter by King James VI.
If you remember a previous anniversary when the Barber Surgeons of Edinburgh was given Royal approval in 1505, Barbers were so skilled with their razors they often carried out medical operations on their customers. The charter in 1599 took the barbers out of the equation. The man behind this was Peter Lowe, as seen in the first pic.
Lowe, born in Errol had travelled the continent and practised as a surgeon to the Spanish Regiment in the service of Philip II of Spain, and served the King of France as a surgeon before returning to Glasgow.
He was shocked at the state of surgery here and decided that barbers should stick to cutting hair and not other parts of the body. His plea to James VI for a charter to found the Faculty of His plea to James VI for a charter to found the Faculty of Chirurgerie was granted. Chirurgerie is an old Scots word for surgery google the word and the majority of the results mention Lowe, The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow is his Living Memorial.

As we enter this era of consistent VA-made fan content (I don't think it's "canon" but that's another conversation) I hope this makes tf2 fans as a whole recognize that not a single one of us can do a good Medic voice. Not one. Your hubris is fooling you your Medic voice is not good

Inspired by a bizarre argument I had on reddit,
I think the question comes down to whether the word "treatment" encompasses strategic behaviors for lessening negative outcomes that result from ADHD symptoms or if treatments are meant to alleviate the symptoms themselves.

Reasons why I don't buy into "posh, aristocratic, and/or bigot Pharma" headcanons
Listed in no particular order, mostly prompted by a conversation with a mutual (that I've also had many times in the past with other mutuals)
For some reason people assume that being a flight frame is what would make Pharma so prideful and disdainful towards everyone else? But in IDW1 canon, flight frames are actually an oppressed class who were restricted by functionism to only be allowed to be soldiers or cargo lifters. The only flight frames who got to go outside of that mold were ones who got special exemptions (Jetfire) or ones who schemed and took advantage of politics (Starscream). If anything, being a flight frame would be a source of self-consciousness/annoyance for Pharma, since he would be seen as unusual and probably get constant "wow I didn't know flight frames could be doctors" type comments that single him out because of his body and not because of his actual skill or personality. It's possible that he might be proud of being a flight frame AND being a doctor, like being so good of a doctor that being a flight frame doesn't matter. But Pharma certainly wouldn't feel prideful or entitled to anything JUST for being a flight frame.
Re: bigoted and/or functionist Pharma: I think this headcanon comes from the fact that Pharma worked at the New Institute yes, but so did other characters such as Chromedome, Rung, and Brainstorm who are neither posh nor functionists. It seems rather unfair to assume that Pharma specifically must be a functionist or hate the lower class because he worked at the New Institute, when other characters who were in the exact same situation weren't presumed to be bigots just because they worked at a shitty place. Also as my point above states, why would Pharma be a functionist when functionism is the institution that would've kept him from being a doctor if he (presumably) wasn't forged with medic hands?
Speaking of bigotry, it's canon that Pharma and Ratchet were best friends since they worked at the DMF together, which was pre-war; how in the hell would it be in-character for Ratchet to be best friends with Pharma if he was an open bigot and a functionist? Ratchet would literally never. Plus, secondarily, Pharma is canonically in love with Ratchet, so if he were some sort of posh aristocrat, it'd be pretty odd for him to be best friends and shack up with a guy that's as down-to-earth and rude as Ratchet is. Not impossible, but for me personally, it counts as a mark against posh!Pharma because I think the fact that Pharma was best friends with Ratchet means that we can form a broad outline of his personality based on the type of person that Ratchet would like enough to be best friends with.
Pharma's diction and way of speaking isn't "high class" at all. He pretty much speaks like any other "normal" character in MTMTE does, but what's more, there are actually a couple of instances where he speaks in a much more casual and loose way. Little details where he says "coz" instead of "cause/because", uses words like "chap", that time he chainsaws someone and says "Feels rough, doesn't it?" I wouldn't say that Pharma is lower class or anything, but when looking for evidence that he's posh or stuck up, his diction/manner of speaking is a good place to start, but there's really no evidence of any poshness there at all. MAYBE that one time he talks to Ratchet talking about "instruments" and making an analogy between a surgeon and a musician, but in that case he was just using a metaphor to make a point to Ratchet.
In general, the only notable thing about Pharma that anyone talks about related to him (besides "going insane and killing patients") is the fact that he's a good doctor and all the various feats he's pulled off. One would think that if he was some sort of posh bigot, people would complain about it or bring it up when talking about their memories of Pharma, but no. Literally Pharma's primary trait is that he's a hella fucking good doctor. I GUESS you could argue that since a lot of doctors IRL are rich bc they get paid a huge amount of money, that means Pharma is also rich and sees himself as above everyone else, but that seems like a rather large leap to make from what little we know about Pharma. And everything we DO know about Pharma points to the fact that being a doctor was his entire life, and the only specific case where he wants to be seen as "superior" is with regards to Ratchet, another doctor who Pharma feels insecure in comparison to. So again, canon points us to the fact that Pharma really only cares about practicing medicine, and the only person he wants to feel superior to is Ratchet, because Ratchet is a better doctor than he is.
