Mega Man S: Chapter 20 (Bonus)
En-Trace ~ Save & Load
Summary: In another world, Sora makes a choice. Word Count: 2,037 First | Previous ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆
“Tut, tut. Looks like rain.” Strelitzia announced after flinging the curtains open. Not a moment after a grin stretched across her face. She rather liked that phrase, however unsure she was of how she first heard it. But the grin fell when she looked up at the sky again. The clouds above were starting to hang a bit lower and some were already a sickly grey color. Their day out might only be for a few hours if it started raining soon.
A rather loud snore brought Strelitzia out of her thoughts. She turned her attention to the couch where Sora was laying. The young adult was fast asleep- and apparently not even in a good dream this time.
“We should really have you checked for chronic fatigue…” she mused, mostly to herself. Then she thought about it some more, eventually shaking her head. “No. Maladaptive daydreaming. That’s what it is. I think?”
Strelitzia gave herself a thoughtful hum as she returned her attention to Sora. He generally was a pretty sound sleeper. Days when he would immediately zonk out after hitting the couch were actually pretty rare. Something must have been bugging him.
Letting out a thoughtful hum, Strelitzia walked over to the couch. She was quick to notice that part of a throw blanket was laying against the back of it. The rest, she soon discovered, was under Sora himself. Strelitzia cocked an eyebrow as a rather rude thought came to her. At the same time, it would also be a pretty funny prank. She usually didn’t do them- a lot were designed to be flat out mean instead of amusing.
But this?
This was going to be an exception.
Strelitzia hummed an innocent tune as she walked behind the couch. Taking the throw blanket with both hands, she gave a rather masterful tug upwards that sent Sora flying to the ground. It was the surprise fling that woke him up.
“I’m up! I’m up!” he declared as he picked his sorry self off the floor. A wave of surprise hit him when he realized Strelitzia had been the one to knock him out of his daydreaming.
“Sora, you hopeless sleepyhead,” Strelitzia laughed. “We were going to spend the day out today, remember? We need to leave soon before the rain comes.”
“It was going to rain today?”
Strelitzia raised an eyebrow at him.
“I don’t keep up with the weather around here!” Sora then said. “It’s not my fault that it’s so unpredictable!”
At this, Strelitzia just shook her head at him- a small grin teased onto her lips.
. . .
The muggy air outside almost made Sora fall back asleep. It definitely wanted to rain, alright. There was no way it wasn’t going to be a large storm too.
“I should have packed a different umbrella.” Strelitzia said, more to herself than Sora. “This is the one with the broken spoke…”
“We won’t need it.” Sora told her with a lazy wave of his hand. At this, Strelitzia gave him a confused glance.
“What if it starts raining?”
“We’ll go under those tents.”
“What-?” Strelitzia started to ask before also noticing the pop-up tents. Her realization came out as a surprised, “Oh! They’re having a pop-up sale today.”
“Pop-up sale?” Sora wondered, giving her a curious head tilt. Strelitzia nodded in agreement before taking his hand.
He hadn’t been aware of how much noise the people under the tents were making at first. It didn’t take long to understand what Strelitzia had meant. There were a lot of vendors underneath the tents; each calling out their wares in a confusing cacophony with the others.
One of the first salespeople Sora noticed was dressed in some kind of discount cosplay. She wore a short blue costume wig that had a side ponytail on the right side of her head. The uniform she wore was mostly white- the top part having an orange piece that looked like a tie, and the bottom part boasting an open half skirt with short shorts underneath.
In a bright voice, she shouted out, “Only at GameGo- Celebrate 20 years of Rockman Zero by saving 30 percent on the original game and its sequels! All other Rockman games are 15 percent off as well! Get ‘em while they last, folks!”
By instinct, Sora inched closer to Strelitzia. This world did not need much effort to be very overwhelming. He still wasn’t used to it. Suffice to say he jumped a solid foot in the air when Strelitzia let out a noise of surprise was an understatement.
“Oh! They have some umbrellas!” she realized. “I’ll be right back.”
She didn’t give him enough time to actually answer before going on ahead. As much as he would have followed her, that cosplay salesperson was proving to be even more distracting.
“Complete your collection with over 35 years of gaming history! Save even more when you buy the Legacy collections! Multiple games in one convenient package!”
Sora cocked an eyebrow at the salesperson before noticing something on their vendor table. It was a small thin box, almost unassuming. Sora blinked once, then twice. His body started to move toward the small box on its own.
A game.
It was one of the games for sale.
Why did it look so familiar? Curious, Sora picked up the box to look over the front art closer.
The cover was presented like a triptych. In the center was a young person donning red armor with a matching, pointed helmet. They held some weapon that resembled a sword, the blade of which being mostly transparent. In the left panel were two kids, both green eyed, brown haired, and wearing blue outfits. The girl in the back had hair that laid mostly flat, whereas the boy in the front had slightly more unruly hair- not unlike how Sora liked his hair. They both had a look of mischievous confidence. Then, in the right panel, was a near full body of a male with long blonde hair, blue eyes, and a weird red triangle on his forehead. He looked a lot more serious than the kids, and wore a red outfit like theirs but possessed longer sleeves.
Something about them… Something about the way those characters looked…
Sora turned the box over to read the back blurb. It didn’t help much.
“R.O.C.K. ON and save the world from dangerous Mavericks! DOUBLE R.O.C.K. ON to protect the ones that matter!”
“Protect the ones that matter, huh?” Sora mumbled as he flipped the box back over. “Looks like a bang-up job I’m doing with that now. I should have stayed with-”
“What did you find?” Strelitzia asked from over his shoulder, apparently suddenly enough to make Sora jump. Was that just going to be her habit for the day? “Oh! Rockman ZX. I hear it didn’t do very well when it first came out. Are you familiar with it?”
“I… don’t know.” he slowly admitted. He looked over at her before asking, “Should I?”
For this, she only offered him a shrug.
“I’m more of a Rockman EXE fan. Iris is my favorite character.” she told him, putting on a wide grin. “I really like the arc she got in the anime.”
“But what about ZX? Does it have an anime too?”
Strelitzia shook her head.
“There’s rumors that it was supposed to,” she said, “But nothing ever came from it. There was even a third game planned but it got scrapped like a lot of other Rockman games. It’s kinda sad, honestly.”
“Oh…” was all Sora could say; his mind wandering back to the game box.
“Do you want me to buy it for you?” she asked with a tilt of her head. “I just got paid. It’ll be my treat!”
At this, Sora didn’t know how to respond. In a small voice, he mumbled more to himself than her, “This world always feels like some surreal dream. There’s always something…”
Now it was Strelitzia’s turn to give him an odd look. She then gave the game box an even more ambiguous glare.
“Do… you know them?” she ventured to ask.
Sora wasn’t sure how to answer. It was enough for her.
“Get the legacy collection.”
Sora blinked. “Ohuh?”
But she wasn’t looking directly at him- which he found a bit odd. The small look of contemplation she had also seemed off. He couldn’t get a good read on it as she picked up a different game box from the vendor table. On it were the same heroes as the ZX box on one half of the artwork, and then on the other was a hero in red, a girl with blonde hair in pink, and several other characters on the other half.
“This collection has the original ZX, its sequel, and the prequel series, Zero, in it.” Strelitzia told him as she handed the box to him. “All four of them. If you knew them, then maybe…?”
‘Everyone just seems to come back, you know?’
‘And we will!’
‘Just don’t forget us.’
The sudden voices, almost coming from a memory, hit Sora like a freight train. His eyes blinked rapidly as he tried to remain awake.
“Sora?” Strelitzia then fretted, noticing right away what was going on. “Please don’t go to sleep on me again.”
“I won’t.” he promised. He still wrapped his arm around hers to keep steady. “I promise I won’t.”
Strelitzia did not look very assured at this. She cast him a concerned stare as he struggled to keep his eyes open.
“Does he need some water?” the cosplay salesperson asked in genuine concern. “I knew it was super humid and hot today, but I didn’t think it was that bad.”
“I’m fine,” Sora told her through a sluggish drawl and a lopsided grin. “This just happens sometimes to me. Chronic fatigue, and all.”
The salesperson gave a careful nod of her head- not sure if she totally bought his excuse or not.
“I’d like to buy this game though,” Sora then said, pointing to the legacy collection still in Strelitzia’s hand.
The salesperson blinked. “I… alright.” she carefully agreed. “The Zero-ZX legacy collection is included in today’s Zero sale, so it’ll be a bit less than the price on the sticker. Is that alright?”
“It’s perfect.” Sora agreed. He gave Strelitzia the nod to place the game down on the counter so the salesperson could ring it up. She did so without hesitation- she even gave him a small nod. Finding out what people they knew from their original world were like in this world might be disorienting. She was going to back him up on this 100 percent.
“Also as part of the sale,” the salesperson went on, “We’re giving away E Tank keychain charms. You can opt out if you want, but there’s no extra cost otherwise.”
“E Tank?” Sora repeated. Another wave of exhaustion tried to come over him, but he fought it back by telling the salesperson, “Sure. I love keychains.”
“Great.” the salesperson nodded. She reached underneath the table to pull out something Sora didn’t expect to see again. It wasn’t much larger than his thumb, but it was a great reminder all the same.
After the purchase was made, Sora and Streltizia waved the salesperson goodbye. The duo came out of the pop up sale tents just as the rain started. Strelitzia immediately opened up her new umbrella so the two could continue to walk along.
“Thank you Strelitzia.” Sora said as they made the turn to their favorite cafe.
“Thank the pop-up sale.” Strelitzia beamed. “I think this is one of the best umbrellas I’ve ever owned! I didn’t think the transparent canopy was the best choice, but the noise it makes! It’s so nice.”
“Not the umbrella.” Sora disagreed. “For letting me find my friends again.”
“O-oh…” Strelitzia slowly remarked. A small blush crossed her face. “It wasn’t anything special. I’d never stop you from meeting your friends again.”
“Thank you.” Sora once more told her before giving her a polite kiss on the cheek. Strelitzia blushed even harder.
What he didn’t know was that she was secretly very jealous of his luck. Some luck indeed…

I think there was a brief period where Dr. Wily genuinely tried to better himself by studying classic literature, but then he read Journey to the West and his takeaway was “WAIT A MINUTE, I COULD MAKE SOME EVIL ROBOTS OUT OF THIS!”

Mega Man S: Chapter 19
Not a goodbye, but a see you later
Summary: In which Sora goes home, and a certain someone annoys a certain someone else. Word Count: 2,571 First | Previous | Bonus ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆
Looking at the keyhole nearly made him choke up. Sora held Kairi’s lucky charm as close to his chest as possible. The E Tank he got with Aile and Vent was well snug inside one of his pockets. He hoped it wouldn’t fall out between now and when he got home. Assuming the universe didn’t eat it in order to keep the world order. Not that he knew if that was actually a thing or not. He just prayed it wasn’t.
“The air feels weird here.” Vent noted.
“We are kinda on the edge of two universes colliding.” Juno said with a smirk.
“Uniting.” Giro quickly corrected. “Two universes uniting, my iris.”
“Indeed they are.” a new voice spoke up as it came over to the group. “The Guardians are on standby and ready for anything as well.”
“Prairie!” Sora shouted as he ran over to the Commander. Without so much a warning he gave her a tight hug.
“Sora!” Girouette corrected out of habit. “Show some respect! Let her breathe.”
“Sorry, sorry.” Sora quickly apologized as he got off of Prairie, even shooting her an apologetic smile. Vent and Aile gave each other an equally confused glance. Did Giro know that blonde haired girl? She looked too young to be the commander of anything…
“It’s alright.” Prairie insisted. “Sora’s going home. He can take all the time he needs to be ready for it.”
Sora gave her a wide grin in appreciation. Prairie gave him a quick one in return before getting serious again.
“However, we should be all ready for the unexpected.” she reminded them. She even took a look over to Giro and Juno, giving them a firm nod. They returned her wordless request with nods of their own. In a situation like this, they had to be ready- even if it meant letting Aile and Vent find out if they had Biometals.
“We begin at your mark, Sora.” Prairie once more reiterated.
“Right.” Sora agreed with a determinate nod. He took in a deep breath and slowly let it out. He loosened his grip on Kairi’s good luck charm as bit as he once more looked it over.
Don’t worry Kairi. I’ll be home soon.
As Sora prepared to point his Keyblade at the lucky charm, Fleuve spoke up with a frantic, “Wait!”
Everyone looked at the short Reploid in confusion. He blushed a bit and averted his gaze for a moment. It didn’t take long for him to brush it off. The Reploid had something important to say, after all.
“Sora, before you leave, I want to give you my gratitude.” Fleuve said. “When the last Commander left us, we still didn’t know much more about the Biometals than them being sentient rocks she created. I’m sure we’ll be able to use the information from your Biometal to help the others.”
“Oh!” Sora realized, “Speaking of, I don’t think I’ll have much use for this anymore.”
Sora dug into his pocket to pull out his Biometal. All this talk about these random rock things made Aile and Vent gawk a bit as they tried to get a good view of it. They didn’t think it to be anything special. It certainly didn’t look very special either.
Fleuve thought very differently. He gawked for a different reason.
“B-but…!” he tried to sputter as Sora gently placed the Biometal in his hands.
“I have an even better souvenir.” Sora claimed. He dug into his pant pocket for a moment to pull out the empty E Tank canister. Behind him, Aile let out a soft, happy gasp. Vent, likewise, reacted with his eyes widening in surprise. He really didn’t think Sora would take it with him.
Satisfied with the Biometal returning to its creator’s hands, Sora got ready to activate the keyhole. It shimmered as he withdrew his Keyblade. ‘Hurry up,’ it felt like it wanted to say, ‘Hurry up and come home. Everyone is waiting for you.’ Sora gave it a firm nod, pulling out Kairi’s lucky charm with even more certainty. Upon presenting it to the keyhole, the lucky charm started to glow and slowly rise from the palm of his hand. He waited until the lucky charm was in line with the keyhole before pointing at both with his Keyblade. The beam of light originating from the Keyblade’s tip rung true for both targets. The keyhole immediately started to glow even brighter- forcing any onlookers to cover their eyes for a moment.
“Sora!” a familiar voice called out just before Sora got hug-tackled.
“Namine?” he wondered as his eyes were still adjusting. When he caught the bit of blonde hair, a wide grin etched across his face as he held her close. “Namine!”
“You did it Sora!” Namine cheered. She was the one to break their embrace; if only because she knew there were many more hugs in store when he crossed over again.
“So,” Vent spoke up, “Are you his girlfriend, or…”
Before he got a real answer, both Juno and Aile whacked him upside the head. Namine and Sora let out a small laughter as Vent whined, “It was an honest question!”
“No.” Namine said. “Nothing like that. I’m… a friend. I’m one of Sora’s many, many friends.”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Namine.” Girouette said, giving her a friendly nod. “It’s only a shame that our meeting will be brief.”
“Make sure you take care of Sora for us, okay?” Juno cut in with a wide grin.
Namine offered them both a sincere smile. “I will.” she promised.
“I would hope so,” a new voice scoffed. “Namine had far more patience than I did during this whole operation. Without her? I’d rather not think about fracturing our universes any further than what they are.”
“Over-1!” Namine exclaimed- apparently surprised that he had decided to show himself. “I thought you decided you’d…”
She trailed off when the Reploid placed a hand on her shoulder. After studying his face for a moment, she believed she understood what he was thinking. Over-1 turned his attention from Namine to the others. He expected the odd stares from the people in his universe. His outer body was made in the same style as the first generation Reploids. At this point in the timeline, they had well evolved away from such casings. Over-1 then looked to Sora. He almost snorted at seeing the boy gawk over his furred collar, more than likely putting together that Over-1 was a Reploid too.
“Good work Sora.” Over-1 told the boy. “Along with Girouette, Juno, Aile, Vent, Commander Prairie, Fleuve, and the Guardians. Our worlds are now connected.”
That news caught everyone’s attention.
“What? Seriously?!” Sora asked first. Over-1 gave a casual roll of his shoulder.
“Now that a proper connection between our dimensions has been established, you could theoretically cross over at any time.” He paused for a moment -punctuating the silence with a glare- before adding in a flat voice, “Don’t.”
“Oh…”
“We should get going.” Namine softly spoke up, even giving Sora’s hand a small tug. “That particular gateway isn’t going to stay open for long.”
“Right.” Sora nodded. But he still took one last look at his new friends. They were all waving and giving their goodbyes and good lucks. If you listened close enough, you could even hear Model X and Model Z’s voices in the mixture. He wished he could give them a proper goodbye as well. Then he wondered if Aile and Vent would ever learn about them.
Tears started to form in the corner of Sora’s eyes. He didn’t quite realize they were there until the first drop fell down his cheek. Before Namine could stop him, Sora ran back toward his new friends. He gave a tight hug to Juno- mostly by virtue of her being closer. The gesture certainly shocked her. Carefully, the young woman wrapped her arms around Sora to return the hug. Sora then thought she was gently patting his head, but caught Girouette’s sleeve out of the corner of his eye.
“We’ll endure.” Girouette softly whispered.
“I know.” Sora mumbled. “I know…”
It took a lot of effort to step away from Juno. He made the mistake of looking back up at her. Juno smiled at him. It was so soft and motherly, Sora almost cried again. Why did it feel like this would be the last time he’d ever see her and Giro again? A part of him just wanted to take them with him. All of them. They’d be safe in his world. But… would their world be safe without them? Perhaps this really was for the better. It didn’t stop him from going in for another hug though.
“Never was good as saying goodbye.” Sora admitted with a shaking breath. “Everyone just seems to come back, you know?”
“And we will!” Aile jumped in, her face all smiles.
“Just don’t forget us.” Vent grumbled as well.
“I won’t.” Sora promised. “I absolutely won’t!”
With new resolve, he turned back around to the keyhole and Namine. Namine, he noticed, almost looked like she expected him to stay. Sora gave her a smile before slipping his hand into hers.
“Let’s go home.” he happily told her.
“Let’s.” Namine agreed with a grin of her own.
Together they went into the keyhole’s light. Walking through felt a lot like being pricked with a thousand different pins and needles. It definitely didn’t help as the light became stronger, forcing them to shield their eyes. Sora could feel Namine slip through his hand but didn’t know if it was safe enough to find her. He kept moving and soon the light dimmed little by little.
As his eyes struggled to adjust to the dimming light, he stumbled right into someone’s arms.
“Namine? Riku? Kairi?” he wondered, desperately blinking to figure out who it was. He came to notice their light skintone first. Then a mess of dark colored, loose curls hanging over one shoulder. Their voice was distinctly feminine with an undertone of unbridled hatred and sarcasm.
“Urg. It’s you.”
“Sabrina!” Sora realized in time with his vision properly returning. “It’s you!”
Against her better wishes, Sora then gave Sabrina a tight squeeze as an ecstatic hug.
“Let go of me!” she demanded, trying to wiggle out of his grasp. But he wouldn’t let go. Instead he repeated over and over, “I’m home! I’m home and it’s you! I’m home!”
“Sora!” the voices of Kairi and Ventus shouted as they ran on over.
“Kairi! Ven!” Sora called back. He let them in on the bear hug- Sabrina whined as she got further buried by the incoming huggers. There was no escaping now. Terra, Aqua, Riku, Donald, Goofy, and even Mickey were now rushing on over to get in on the reunion. Namine stayed behind a bit, smiling to herself. He would give her a hug way more bone crushing than what he was giving Sabrina right now. He’d make it last a lot longer too.
After all, he was home again.
. . .
And so, Over-1 was alone again. He liked it this way, actually. Having companions only reminded him of how short their lives all were. At least in the in between, in the silence, he could-
“That was a bit anticlimactic, don’t you think? Could have done with another fight for good measure. Give ‘em that ol’ final boss routine. Three forms tops!”
He didn’t recognize the voice, but the mere intrusion made Over-1 let out a low growl. He turned to see that there was now a man in a black coat sharing this nonexistent plane with him. The man in the black coat was leisurely looking around the area, as if there were something of value to look at here. There was nothing in the in between. There never would be. So why the hell was this man here? No one had the power to be here except Over-1. No one else has the power to...
“Get out.” Over-1 demanded. “You don’t belong here.”
“Hmm… Not yet.” the man playfully mused. “I like making new friends.”
“I don’t make friends.”
“Oh, I know. I know. You pour all your heart and soul into a single girl, and then the universe just spits on her like a llama who doesn’t like its handler. Been there, done that.”
Over-1’s glare darkened. “You intrude in a nonexistent plane, and you’re not going to give me the courtesy of knowing your name?” he snarled.
“What good would that do?” the man chuckled in return. “It’s not like you have a ‘banned users’ poster around here that’ll stop me. Not when you and I are so alike.” The man let out a hearty laugh- just long enough to further boil Over-1’s artificial blood. “Nah, man. I’m one of those ‘earned way too many names over the years’ kinda guy. But the one everyone constantly clings to is The Master of Masters. Pretty flashy, if I do say so myself. A bit of overkill though. I was once a boy too you know!”
The man’s bright laughter echoed in the blank space. Over-1 could almost feel his systems about to go into a different mode. Over-2 would be excellent to give this guy a good attitude check. Just a little roughing up could bring him down to size. Assuming Over-1 could get that first punch in. He had a feeling this guy knew exactly what he was saying, and how he was saying it.
“I’ve been watching this whole situation blow over, Over-1.” the Master of Masters proclaimed. “And lemme say, I’m really impressed with what you can do. A bit more than what I can do, of course, but we’re still kindred spirits. Yeah? Time travel buddy to time travel buddy.”
No, Over-2 would be far too kind for this maniac. Over-5 would do much better.
“So, on that note,” the Masters of Masters mused as he slid closer to Over-1, “About that whole ‘don’t cross dimensions’ thing…”
Over-1 cocked an eyebrow at the black coated man. He couldn’t see that smarmy grin, but he could definitely feel it.
“No.” Over-1 insisted. “And I believe you know why, Master.”
“Oh come ooooon,” the Master whined, “Aren’t cha excited about all the fun possibilities we could have together? Testing things, giving the audience what they want... Pandering?! It’ll be great! Just trust me.”
“No.”
In a different tone of voice entirely, one much darker, the Master of Masters then said, “Is that what Aero or Kalinka wanted you to do? Forcing yourself to be alone like this?”
Over-1 had never hated anyone more than in this very moment. He could attest to be the smallest bit of manipulation when it came to their timeline, but the Master? This was clearly someone who wanted to play the fiddle while the world burned. He was no better than the villains who called themselves gods in their universe.
And the worse part?
The Master of Masters knew this.
“You will not change the fates in our universe.” Over-1 threatened.
“Whaaaaa?! Of course I wouldn’t!” the Master proclaimed, returning to his jovial personality. “There’s a world order to maintain, you know. And just between you and me- this place ain’t exactly stable either. So what’s a few cameos every now and then?”
Over-1’s glare hardened.
Looks like he wouldn’t be alone again for a long time.
