Six Sentence Sunday - 09/04/2023

Writers: post (approximately) six sentences from something you’re working on. If you aren’t ready to do that, add six sentences to your WIP.

So, it's Sunday again! This means I'm going to share a snippet from one of my WIPs. I asked around what they wanted to see, and, in the end, I'm going with Michael/Lucifer/Dean.

This snippet is from a story for last year's Kinktober but the part I chose is completely SFW.

Michael smiled fondly at Dean as he cupped his face with his hand.

The human leaned into the touch, closing his eyes. He was sitting on the bed, hands in his lap, and was waiting for orders from Michael and Lucifer.

Dean craved touch and reassurance more than anything else, and it had been a rough path before Michael or his brother understood that.

Michael didn’t think their arrangement would work at first, but thanks to Dean Winchester he had his brother back and two people to love. He kissed the top of his human’s head. He would be eternally grateful to Dean for this. And he would be eternally grateful for his love, too, for Dean’s trust and care were a gift he had never dreamed of receiving.

Written for @spnarchangelweek day 4: Michael, with the prompts “Confusion” and “Dance”! A little Michean fluff for the soul <3

At the best (or worst) of times (when their bodies clash in dissonance, when their smooth blend suddenly becomes out of sync), Dean has trouble identifying his movements. It used to be the worst part about this whole deal - the blurs of identity, the thoughts that aren't his but are. Now that he's accustomed to it, it feels less like an intrusion and more like a comfort. Michael takes over when Dean is too tired of his own skin, when his shoulders feel too weak to shoulder the weight of being one, of being human. And in turn, Dean lets Michael feel the taste of individuality. Gradually, Michael learns that he doesn't like wine but tolerates whiskey (amen to that, big guy), that fancy soaps make his skin feel soft and silky (… fine. But only one bottle. And don't show Sammy), that the static on the radio scratches his brain pleasantly (what the hell, Mike). A thousand little decisions that don't affect anyone else, but teach the centuries-old angel to be an I and not a we. And together, they learn to be more.

Still, Michael - Dean's - their eyebrows go up as Dean notices their foot gently tapping the floor to the rhythm of Cherry Bomb. It's a subtle twitch, one that Dean would make without even realizing, and yet he has the distinct feel that it hasn't happened in months, since before he said yes.

Michael?

But Michael does not answer - he is transfixed by the foot, its rise and its fall, as Cherie playfully yells from the bar speakers. Dean feels their head tilt ever so slightly, a gesture he thought he managed to coax Michael into limiting (seriously, dude, it makes us look like an owl).

What is that?

Despite himself, Dean feels the corners of the mouth quirk up. Instead of replying, he leans into the feeling, closing his eyes, and soon his head is bobbing along too. Hello, daddy, hello mom, I'm your ch-ch-ch-ch-cherry bomb…!

Dean? What are we doing?

There's a slight sense of panic there, unusually soft - Michael's fear is often all-encompassing, like a skyscraper collapsing. He still isn't used to losing control.

Relax, Kevin Bacon. It's just dancing.

Hey street boy, what's your style? Your dead end's dreams don't make you smile…

A quick look around, to show Michael the other customers. A bouncing leg on the left, an idle tap of an index finger against a beer bottle. On his right, a young girl is mouthing the lyrics while texting something on her phone. Dean's shoulders relax slightly, though the head remains tilted.

Here, he tells Michael, and does the mental equivalent of holding the door open. Try it.

Michael is at the center of their being, nestled deep in the front seat. Slowly, he tries tapping a finger against the counter. It ends up weird and staccato, completely out of sync with the music.

This isn't right, he says. Michael might suck at adapting, but he's good at noticing when something's not how it should be. Leader of Heaven benefits, Dean supposes. He'd rather have the health insurance.

Don't think too hard about it, Dean replies. Just - let it move you.

With a hesitant noise, Michael tries again. Dean gently coaxes their eyes closed, and lets the world become nothing but Michael and music. The grungy riffs of Lita's guitar, the wild beats of the drums. And then, hesitant but lively, the foot resumes its bouncing, adding its mellow wooden thumps to the melody.

Dean grins, and this time he knows the smile is his. "You're a natural," he says.

Hello, world, I'm your wild girl, I'm your ch-ch-ch-ch-cherry bomb…!

She should take better care of her fruit, says Michael.

Dean breaks out laughing.

This is a series rewrite from the beginning of season 9 where Dean does NOT kick Cas out of the bunker. If you think this means they're gonna have a quick Happily Ever After, you're wrong! Bob manages to weave canon events into this story while still keeping things fresh and interesting. Just the Demon Dean stuff alone is interesting because it explores so many things that could have been. And now that I've binged this series, I'm so sad that I have to wait for the next episode like everyone else!

yessss i love responding to comments!!! i appreciate them so much, and i love an opportunity to talk about my writing <3 i can understand why people might prefer not to, especially on a place like ao3 which is technically an archive, but i like the community feel of interacting with readers on there (and i love it when other authors reply to my comments so kind of a golden rule situation)

6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

hm...technically the song remains the same (spn, t) has the least desirable endingbut imo passive (mcu, gen), which is entirely about grief and denial, is angstier despite "brother died" being a less dramatic problem than "stuck in eternal crushing hell isolation"

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

to me it's phantom fangs (wwdits, t), my little vampirism-as-trans-allegory project! it's a bit of a bummer at times but to me the ending is so happy <3

8. Do you get hate on your fic?

i haven't!

9. Do you write smut?

yee. although i'm never sure if i want to write smut lmao but it sure does happen a fair amount sometimes

it's not generally my thing, although i do enjoy heavy allusions. i do have at least one though!

not that i'm aware of (i have had art stolen though RIP)

yes! although i'm not sure the translation is up anymore; it was a number of years ago

no...i'm curious about this but i'm not sure how it would go? but anyway no, at least not yet

formally it's samifer because i got my fandom phd in this lol but who even knows in actuality tbh

15. What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

i'm soooo haunted by the last chapter of crimsonpeaknatural aka hollow's gate (spn, e). it is my longest fic on ao3 by far and is literally one chapter from done, i just can't bring myself to write the last ~7k. it is fully outlined. i know what happens in it. i just can't write it! why

i also started a michean fic over the summer that i really like but i doubt it'll ever be finished. at least i never posted any of that though :p

16. What’s your writing strengths?

imo characterization/perspective, atmosphere, and prose versatility. maybe pacing? i've gotten comments on that a few times but it's less of a self-observed strength

17. What’s your writing weaknesses?

i don't know what plots are <3 also sometimes my prose wraps around to being a little too circular for its own good so that's both a strength and a weakness of mine lol.

tbh i'm also bad at killing my darlings, especially when it comes to scenes i'm obsessed with, unless i give myself a LONG time to edit. like, on the order of months

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

i'm not really a fan of this as a reader and i prefer not to do it as a writer, but also i'm not going to knock it on principle because i do understand the appeal, especially to people who are writing primarily for themselves and are comfortable in both/all the languages they're including. it can be fun sometimes to see the differences between the language the dialogue and the translation gives (if they provide one) if the language is one i'm also familiar with.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

harry potter. y'know...what can you do lol it is what it is. i wrote the kind of dramione angst you'd expect of a person like me who was 13yo at the time

20. Favourite fic you’ve ever written?

ohhhh i don't know. i had SO much fun writing poker face (spn, e) and i think it succeeds at doing everything i wanted it to do. this isn't an objective answer but i am genuinely very happy with that one so it is my answer atm!

Omega Dean Winchester has been in a relationship with Alpha brothers Lucifer and Gadreel for three years now. Their relationship is hard, especially because Lucifer and Gadreel are mated to each other, but not to Dean. Despite this, they make it work. When Lucifer and Gadreel leave Dean for a few days because of their job - a job Dean doesn’t know much about, anyway - Dean is left to his own devices and thoughts. Not only that, but Dean finds out something that might jeopardize their relationship. How will the three of them navigate their relationship while dealing with a mob war, ghosts from the past, and an enemy they are not sure they can win against?

do you ship midam?

short answer: I like them a lot but no, I can't say I actively ship them. It's more of a fun ship-in-law.

long answer:

I'm not very invested in it. I kind of wish I was! I read fics that include them, but I don't go looking for stuff that focus exclusively on Michael/Adam romance (unless I randomly decide I want to read pwp, or if it's a fic rec/a fic written by someone I really like/trust with the characters).

I AM interested in their dynamic, but mostly the non-romantic themes (friendship, vesselhood, etc) and most of the time I'm much more invested in Michael (= what it means in terms of character development for Michael in general) than Adam... If I had to choose a Michael/human ship I would probably pick Michean or Michael/Sam because I'm much more interested in these human characters and the character development that would need to occur for them to end up with Michael.

One big turnoff for me is that a lot of fanon Midam dynamics are based on late season canon (which makes total sense since their only real interactions take place in S15), and I dislike most post-Kripke era characterizations, especially Buckleming!Lucifer, meaning Cagefics/Cage hcs are a bit annoying to me in the context of Midam in a corner + Buckleming!Lucifer who is mostly ignored or used as a plot device for Midam angst (trying to torture Adam or whatever); I also dislike how Buckleming!Lucifer's unidimensionality leads to a less complex interpretation of his dynamic with Michael, which flattens Michael's character as a consequence (e.g saying S5 Michael was lying when he told Dean he didn't want to kill Lucifer, etc.) that's a big nope for me - not matter the pairing/story, if your version of S5 Michael is completely indifferent to the idea of killing Lucifer then it's not Michael to me (and the swan song script agrees with me!) - and I'm not interested in him.

Speaking of flattening, that's another aspect that turns me off... there's nothing wrong with liking that, but the "pure, healthy unproblematic cinnamon rolls" interpretation of the ship does not appeal to me at all. I do like fun normalcore domestic aus, but only with some spice you know? Not necessarily angst, drama and heavy codependency, but at least something that addresses that the characters are more than y/n + y/n-with-wings in a coffeshop. (The same could be said for Michifer ofc, there are some popular fics/hcs about Lucifer being a smoll bean who did nothing wrong/etc.)

I don't think the "100% unproblematic" interpretation I just mentioned is the most common though, I've read great fics/hcs/metas that explore their characters in much more compelling ways... and in general I think Midam is fun and has a lot of potential for all types of interesting dynamics!!

However, looking for Midam 'content' is like a dodgeball game to me because of the headcanon incompatibilities I just mentioned (and the ones I kept to myself djfkjd), and at the moment the ship's potential doesn't motivate me enough to fuel me with the energy I would need to actively, regularly thread my way through this part of the fandom to look for things that tick all my boxes. Add Lucifer to the mix and it changes everything though; Midafer ftw 👑!!
