Alya and Nino were babysitting their siblings, watching the footage from New York Fashion Week and driving their younger siblings crazy with the commentary. Alya had learned a bit about the fashion industry to help Marinette out with her stuff before Chloé got involved (and had been doing pretty well from what she could tell) so she could at the very least pick out certain things. Nino was surprising her with his commentary about the men's fashion being shown. And when Marinette's designs were being shown off, they were cheering loud enough for the neighbours to demand they quiet down.
It was a marathon and all they would let be shown on the TV so they could see every second of their friend's success. It was finally the last day of the event and they were watching the final interviews while designs and set pieces were packed away. Suddenly there was gunfire on the video and the interviews were halted as all cameras turned to a group of people, some bearing anti-industry signs but others were carrying AR-15s. Nora had just got home when that happened and quickly dragged the younger kids into another room while Alya bit her thumb anxiously. The gunmen opened fire and the footage cut to static.
Nino quickly grabbed his phone and tried to see if an international news site was showing what happened. Alya frantically changed channels until she found the report.
"More updates on the Fashion Week shooting," a reporter said severely as footage was shown of people being taken from the venue on gurneys, some in body bags. "In a shocking attack on the event as it was in its final hours, more than a dozen people entered the arena with guns and protest signs before they opened fire on designers, models and reporters. We have fifteen confirmed dead and many inside were injured, including Chloé Bourgeois, the daughter of Style Queen Magazine's CEO and Editor in Chief Audrey Bourgeois and Parisian Mayor André Bourgeois, who was attending the event with French designer Marinette Dupain-Cheng. Fortunately, none of the international guests were killed, and Miss Bourgeois appears to be the only visitor that was injured. Here, we have footage of Miss Bourgeois heroically protecting models and designers."
The footage shifted to a shot of a bullet whizzing by Marinette's ear where her usual pigtails used to be and Chloé charging one of the shooters with a stray hammer. Alya watched with wide eyes as Chloé managed to take down one of the gunmen before one of the others shot her in the arm. Less than a moment after she went down the footage showed police storming the arena and subduing the shooters. Relieved that her friends were mostly okay, Alya turned the footage off and sent a text to Marinette asking how they were doing.
"It's safe to bring the kids out," she called to Nora. Her older sister let the kids out of the room and Nino stood.
"And…I need to get Noel home…," Nino said shakily. "I'll see you tomorrow, babe." She nodded and he pulled his brother out of the apartment.
"You two go get ready for bed," Nora instructed the twins and they hurried to do as they were told. "Lil sis…you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine," she said, still shaking off the worry about Marinette and Chloé.
"Are your friends okay? That was where your girl Marinette is right?"
"They almost shot her in the face, Nora," she gasped. "And then Chloé just grabbed a hammer and went on the attack. She actually was shot…in the arm."
Chat Noir went on patrol after hearing about what happened in New York to clear his head. He bumped into Carapace near the Eiffel Tower and the two went to the spire.
"Hey Carapace," he greeted. "Any sign of trouble?"
"Not in Paris at least…I don't wanna say too much but…a friend of mine is out of town right now and the place she was at…some people just started shooting people for no reason, dude…who does that?"
"Some people are just crazy," he sighed. "And hey…I saw the videos on the Ladyblog. If you see Rena Rouge before I do…about that video you guys sent in to the Ladyblog the other day…thanks."
"Dude, of course everyone rallied behind you against that jerk bashing you," Carapace laughed. "It's the Ladybug and Chat Noir team, right?"
"Yeah…I guess you're right," he agreed. "But you know…they're kinda right. All I'm good for half the time is being a distraction so Ladybug can use her Lucky Charm and beat the Akuma."
Carapace clapped him on the back and repeated one of Ladybug's trademark encouragements and they went out to finish patrolling the city. Rena Rouge joined them after a while and the three of them found themselves sitting on a roof above a café with free tea in hand.
"This is nice…," Chat noted. "It being more than just me and Ladybug…I kinda wish she would let you guys keep your Miraculous when she gets back from her trip…"
"It's up to her, but same, Dude," Carapace laughed. "I like knowing I'm helping protect people."
"And if she lets at least you keep your Miraculous," Rena added. "She wouldn't have to be so crazy stressed."
"You know who she is?" Chat gasped.
"No, but just like…yeah this was urgent, but with it just being the two of you having to drop everything to deal with Hawkmoth…I bet you're pretty stressed with all this too."
On the last day of Fashion Week, Marinette stood with several other designers during the final interviews. Chloé was off to the side, discussing her checklist over a headset with the team packing up their showpieces. A door slammed open and Chloé looked up from her list to see several people storming the building. One of them fired off a gun.
"Call the police and evacuate," she gasped into her headset.
"What's going on?" the worker on the other end asked.
"Shooters just came in," she hissed before throwing her headset and radio aside. She leapt forward and shoved a reporter to the ground just before a bullet whizzed by. "You okay?"
"Yeah…thanks," the reporter sighed. She nodded and started to get up, scanning the area for a weapon. The guns kept firing and several people fell to the ground, injured or worse. She glanced at Marinette to see a bullet whiz past her ear right where a pigtail used to be. She spotted a hammer and grabbed it.
Chloé stood and rushed to the shooters, keeping low and dodging bullets. Fortunately, she'd gotten some combat training after her first time as Queen Bee. She made it to a shooter and shoved his gun to the side right before he pulled the trigger, making him finish the clip into the floor. She twisted and hit his elbow with her hammer. He shouted in pain and dropped the gun.
She flipped the hammer in her hand and kneed him in the groin before smacking the side of his head as he stumbled back with the head of the hammer. He fell to the ground unconscious and she turned to take down another shooter when a shooting pain hit her arm and she dropped the hammer. It took her a second to process that she'd been shot in her dominant arm. She narrowed her eyes and bent to grab the hammer with her left hand.
Just as she had the hammer in hand again and was about to go after the guy that shot her, the doors slammed open again.
"Weapons down and hands in the air!" someone shouted and she looked to see a team of police storming the arena and surrounding the 'protestors'. Someone gently took the hammer from her as the situation was contained.
"Miss, are you injured elsewhere?" the officer asked.
Marinette sat in the ER waiting area with Audrey, waiting for confirmation about Chloé's condition. She got several texts while they waited and she checked them. Every single one of her friends had texted her.
Girl are you okay? Alya had messaged her.
Marinette are you okay? Just saw the news, the message from Adrien read. The rest were in a similar vein and she replied to all of them with a simple 'yeah I'm fine'. A nurse came into the area just then as a wave of messages hit her phone.
"Mrs Bourgeois?" the nurse called and Audrey stood.
"How is she?" she demanded.
"She's fine," the nurse assured them. "The doctor would like a word with you."
"Is it okay if I go in and talk to her?" Marinette asked, standing as well. The nurse nodded and gave her a room number before leading Audrey to the side. Marinette went to the room and closed the door. Tikki flew out of her purse and over to Chloé.
"Hey," Chloé greeted. "They're being ridiculous about this."
"Chloé, you were shot!" she argued. "I don't think they're being ridiculous at all." The doorknob turned and Tikki hid under Chloé's pillow as the doctor and Audrey came in.
"You're free to go," the doctor sighed. Chloé got out of the bed and Marinette noticed Tikki move to hide under Chloé's skirt. The three of them headed out to Audrey's waiting limo.
"How will this affect our travel plans?" Marinette asked as the car started driving to their hotel.
"I'll make the arrangements for the showpieces to be sent back to Paris," Audrey sighed. "And after your follow up appointment next week you girls can go back to Paris, so I'll get with the airline and change your flight plans."
"Thanks Mom…," Chloé groaned.
"Hey, I'm just going off what the doctor instructed," Audrey defended. "You're the one that ran in with a hammer instead of hiding like the rest."
"Mom, I'm a part time superhero. Protecting people is what I do."
"Yes, a fine superhero…," Audrey griped and started to list off Chloé's failures as Queen Bee.
"We don't need a reminder of things she's been beating herself up about," Marinette snapped. "Sure, it was a bad start, but she's been a big help to Ladybug and Chat Noir since Hero's Day. And I think it's really telling how much she's changed in the last few months that her first instinct was to find a weapon and try to help." The car stopped at the hotel and the girls got out of the car and headed to their room.
"Thanks…," Chloé sighed.
"We're friends now, Chloé. And friends support each other."
"This isn't going to hurt your Ladybug plans, right?"
As the day of Ladybug's return got closer, the negative articles got worse. With the one behind them specifically targeting Chat. And despite Rena Rouge and Carapace encouraging him, Adrien knew the articles were right. And then he found a video and article with the caption 'writer of anti-Chat Noir articles revealed'. Curious, he started the video.
"Nadja Chamack just came forward as the writer of unfortunately justified articles calling attention to Chat Noir's lack of impact in our city's struggle with Hawkmoth," the reporter said gravely. "As popular as he is, in the long run he really isn't all that effective in doing anything besides causing a distraction or making things worse."
Gabriel was on the phone with Audrey, confirming that Marinette and Chloé were safely on their way, when a loud explosion came from near Adrien's room.
"What was that, Gabriel?" Audrey demanded.
"I don't know, but I don't like it," he sighed. "We'll talk later," he said before hanging up. Just as he was about to leave his office and go investigate, Plagg flew over to him.
"Adrien's been akumatized!" Plagg gasped. "Luckily it didn't land in his Miraculous but…"
"That's worse than I thought…Duusu!" he called for his transformation and headed out to try and help his son.
