“What makes their collaboration so interesting is how Colleen does so many different things depending on the tone and direction of the story,” said curator Kim Munson. “There are so many visual references and touchpoints, and so much range to her style.”
New retrospective of @colleendoran’s work with @neil-gaiman appears in Forbes (!) in time for the opening of the Colleen Doran Illustrates Neil Gaiman exhibition at NYC’s Society of Illustrators.

Thanks to Women in Animation's NYC Chapter, I will be selling my work at MoCCA Fest this weekend alongside many talented artists at tables #52, 53, and 54! I won't be in on Saturday, but I will be floating around the venue Sunday afternoon and may occasionally stop by the table if you want to come say hi.

I'll be at MoCCA Fest at table 68 this weekend, and I made some of my favorite, evergreen pieces of art advice into a print for the occasion! Always some nice reminders for me, but maybe they'll be helpful for you too.
(Personally, I have never been steered wrong by "follow your thirst." 😌)

CRAB AND RIDER!!!
This is a comic I did for a collaborative class zine called ‘Animal Companions.’ It’s super cool to have it printed out with everybody else’s work! We’ll be selling them at MoCCA Art Fest in the spring, very exciting :D

Episode 534 - Noah Van Sciver
Live from MoCCA Fest 2023, it's an Artist's Spotlight feat. Noah Van Sciver! I host a live session with Noah (with audience Q&A) to talk about his career in comics, his return to autobiography with his new Maple Terrace comic (Uncivilized Books), what his graphic biography of Joseph Smith taught him about comics, when he realized/accepted he was Alt and not Mainstream, and the great wisdom his father gave him about comics (and how his dad named one of his sisters about a character from a Conan comic). We also get into looking at 40 and how it compares to the comic he did about turning 30, why ex-Mormons appreciate his Joseph Smith bio, the challenges of getting work done as a father, how the American Splendor and Crumb movies set him on his path, the influence of Kerouac and the Beats on his writing and art, the original comic art that made him plotz, his sense of obligation to share the work of older artists, and a lot more. Follow Noah on Instagram and YouTube and support his Patreon, and listen to our 2022 conversation • More info at our site • Support The Virtual Memories Show via Patreon or Paypal and via our Substack

I'd first run into Paul Curtis at my first MoCCA Fest, back when it was at the Puck Building. He was the only person at that show (and many others) who had heard of Blaster Al Ackerman and the Ling Master when I started to give my Ling Master Comics spiel.
I shared MoCCA Fest tables with Paul and with Luisa Felix for a number of years; after Luisa's untimely death in January 2013 (a few months before we lost Blaster), Paul and I took up a suggestion by Jude Deluca to put together a tribute volume. An Invitation to the World of Luisa Felix, Cartoonist was our closest collaboration, collecting a lot of Luisa's art including webcomic strips and mini/Micro-Comics that Paul and Luisa had worked on together.
Paul shared MoCCA Fest tables with me and Michele Witchipoo for several years after that...until we stopped getting into MoCCA. We haven't applied the last few years, for reasons you might guess.
I phoned Paul in January. It somehow feels more recent than that, but it wasn't. He'd been hard to get in touch with the last year or so, once he got a new job. As usual, though, once I had him on the horn, he was a font of pop-culture knowledge.
Paul was the person who turned me on to the band Sparks. They'd been recording since the 1970s, but I'd never even heard of them until Paul threw together a bootleg CD for me, in or around 2013. Paul introduced me to some amusing television, as well, including the hilarious Danger 5.
Folks, if there's someone you've been meaning to phone or email, don't wait.

✨📘🖍️🐛🌱✨ This Friday is the Society of Illustrators annual show in New York and my MoCCA fest badge art is included in the institutional category as a series! I know these were technically fooorrr @soi128 through MoCCA Fest BUT these have been some of my favorite drawings in years and I wanted to try my luck to see if they could get in. I loved seeing them as badges and on MoCCA merch throughout the festival and now I’m excited to see them publicly again and framed nicely! I’m happy this year’s judges thought they deserved to be included in the show. Can’t wait to be at the show this Friday, can’t wait to be back in New York and see good friends. #societyofillustrators #moccafest #illustration #artistsoninstagram (at Society Of Illustrators) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn1_9M2J44X/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

MoCCA Fest THIS WEEKEND!
It's springtime, and that means the start of the comic convention season!  This weekend, I'm tabling once again with my friend Nadia Burgess of Toughspirit Creations at MoCCA Arts Festival!  Here are the details:
Sat April 7, 11A-7P
Sun April 8, 11A-6P
at Metropolitan West 639 W 46th st.
We're at table E174 on the first floor near the Wacom booth.
Tickets are just $7 per day!
https://www.societyillustrators.org/mocca-arts-festival
I was just emailing someone today about some differences between MoCCA Fest and other comic cons.  It's an indie comics festival, so you'll see lots of self-published comics focusing on personal stories, rather than a more hard-core comic con with Marvel/DC stuff.  But there's something fun for everyone at MoCCA Fest!  There's a Wacom booth where you can try the latest tablet gadgets, Patreon Lounge where you can learn about all the awesome stuff Patreon does (and if you're a freelancer, you SHOULD know about Patreon), and a RisoLab.  There are panelists who will talk about issues like "Comics, Community and Career", and everything from the New Yorker comics to experimental comics.  Hope to see you there!
