Gobulsnarfs. Le Funny Names with big mouths

I need to work on the filtergills next time i work on snarf (or just wait for gen 6 to give him a new model and jiggle physics on the snout), but besides that, scavengers would travel many a kilometer to get a bite or two of a beached Mohran, Nibelsnarf included

when accosted by a predator with superb color vision or to display to rivals or mates, nibelsnarf may partially unbury itself to display it's frightening belly (and proportionally tiny torso in comparison to it's head, i hate it i hate it i hate it)

Bite first, ask questions later or never, even if said question was "did I just eat my own kid?"

I need more water foliage, it's true, but maybe I also need to to work on how anglerfish lures work and some way to make more convincing underwater swamp stuff. Overall it's been pretty difficult to make anything relating to the Bigmouth Leviathans that isn't just "lol Bigmouth not the show, gluttony", coupled with the fact that even with the enhancements Tea gave me, these are very dated models I'm working with in a very dated software that's in Eternal Beta. please give them new models capcom, even if their fights end up sucking i just want something polished to work with. As for Next time, well there's TGS in two weeks time, so I might liveblog it here on the Tumblr. but who knows

The Gunslinger spider

My first ever monster hunter monster oc! inspired by boleadora spiders, this large monster keeps a herd of common prey monsters (such as aptonoth) within its territory in order to attract the flying wyverns it preys upon (and as livestock in case of emergency); extremely territorial about its herd, will not just attack its preferred prey but also anything that threatens them.

The boulders it stacks in its back and webbed bag act both as natural armor and camouflage as well as its ammo, as it attaches the rocks to threads of silk in order to hurl them at its prey both to knock it down and to entangle and pull at it.

Around its mouth there are pores that produce threads of silk which help detect vibrations in the air, and also can be combined with the sticky substance produced by its fangs (gets more viscuous when in contact with air) to quickly weave threads in the middle of a fight. There are accounts of older and more experienced individuals using smaller, ignitable stones with its front limbs to directly engage opponents in close combat, causing burns and concussions from the blasts (an action very reminiscent of one of Qurupeco's abilities, perhaps these older individuals have engaged in fights with them? to predate them or to take advantage of their call?)

Another year, another 100 day project! This year I did fictional animals based on real life animals so I could learn more about creature design

Since I’m nearing the halfway mark, I wanted to share some of my favorites and their inspiration!

Bioluminescent cave-bun-creatures! Some preliminary concept sketches I threw together and prettied up in Clip Studio back in August, both to push my creature design skills and as a bit of a tailored portfolio piece.

I plan to draw more of them eventually, and already have some modifications in mind. (Ex: making their feets more dextrous and less blunted.)

Also inspired partly by the absolutely amazing work of @ / jayrockin! If you haven't seen their work before and enjoy speculative biology or sci-fi worldbuilding, you should absolutely go give 'em a look.

From left to right, top to bottom:

Subterranean Earth fauna are largely blind...but in a different world, wildlife could use bioluminescence instead, like earth deepsea creatures.

Cartiliginous fans with large bioluminescent "eyes"; these act as both a distraction and an intimidation tactic (caterpillar style ;D)

Fans regrow easily and are designed to be lost. They can also be angled or waved, -> and folded backward to accommodate tight spaces.

Tapetum lucidum [in eyes], to take advantage of other organisms' bioluminescence.

Neck can turn 180 degrees, like owls

Insectivore

Small teeth, but sharp; resemble possum teeth

Paw pads are "sticky", in the same way as gecko's; this is mostly for traction, though, and can't facilitate hardcore climbing

Claws assist with traction in slippery cave environs

Conflicts are brutal - fights for territory or mating rights focus on damaging the fans, as without them an individual's chances of survival decrease

Behavior overall is reclusive, but dauntless.

While they rely heavily on their fans first, when push comes to shove, they have a reputation for being recklessly bold.

Here’s the skulls I made for the vid!

For garang I used Gorillas and Macaques for reference, and for luna I used members of Hesperocyoninae for reference because that’s what I think it is, but like with most things in monhun its phylogenetic placement in the tree of life is kinda subjective.

I don’t have much to say about garang other than, aside from a missing pair of premolars on the mandibles, the dental formula matches perfectly with primates.

I do have more to say on luna however. The pronounced snout arch makes me think Lunagaron might deal with a lot of bite stress and have a very powerful bite. There’s also the long teeth and notch in the tooth line on the upper jaw, which are obvious adaptations for fish eating, but the robustness of the teeth and the iron reinforcement makes me think luna might be more like a cursorial phytosaur or otter, able to eat a wide assortment of things but perfectly capable of eating slippery stuff and being able to crack open armored prey like turtles or mollusks.

I know in the past I’ve said I think luna might have had more aquatic ancestors, and while that’s possible, it’s probably more likely that this trend towards aquatic-ness is actually new. I actually brought up the semi-aquatic luna theory to UHC.

I still stand by a few things I’ve said here such as the thick tail partially being due to fat stores and the scales helping with hydrodynamics and the immune system, but I’m not really sure about luna having one set of teeth anymore.

so now that Primordial Malzeno is revealed, let's go over these radical changes from species to species

Primoridal is a more angelic/skeletal white and gold with v shaped crest, more scaled wings and what seems to be a much thinner tail up to the tip as well as an angel wing collar compared to regular's black and red with a u shaped crest and more slender wings and demonic collar as well as the qurio on modern mal's neck and forelimbs

malzeno as a species seems to be organ feeders through and through

his version of the bloodening form seems to be a deep purple/dark blue wings and brighter white skin

whether it took 50 years for a pri-mal to become the mal we know today or some other span of time is unknown for now, we wait until tomorrow japan time to know for sure

Il admit im not that knowledgable at Squamate skull anatomy and i cant find any good references to make the skull so it looks garbage so i apologize for that!

as for my thoughts on Great Girros hes fine i guess no strong feelings about him hes just a cobra lizard.
