I have the worst luck picking summer reads

I can't seem to learn that "mentioned next to Jane Austen in classic "must read" list" doesn't equal "rom-com". I took Tess of the Ubervilles to the beach 2 years ago and this year I picked Cranford. I had no clue what either was about and, spoilers after the cut, by chapter five,

there's a rape and a baby's death in one of them and four deaths in the other. They do not get cheerier (I actually haven't finished Cranford, but the mood is down). And they're totally worth reading and I'm better off for it, but when I go to the beach in a couple of weeks I'm just gonna take Northanger Abbey and read it for the umpteenth time cause I don't trust myself. I can't with the vibes.
