listen i know arakawa vehemently refused the idea of introducing a love triangle/a love rival in silver spoon

but heres the thing

she already did

her name is ayame minamikujou

she is introduced as mikage's childhood friend. shes loud and condescending and annoying. but most importantly she is viscerally jealous of hachiken's spot in ezo ag because it means he gets to go to school with mikage.

she believes he took the place that belongs to her. she treats him poorly. refuses to remember his name and picks whatever number comes to her mind instead. to a point that becomes ridiculous. like what the fuck is this

she shows zero respect towards him but she. compliments mikage a lot? under the guise of being a rival of course but like we know how gay rivalries tend to be. she shows a lot of faith in mikage's abilities and pushes her to be better. she's even the whole reason mikage becomes less nervous and competes as well as she did.

i dont have the panels but did i mention that she founded an equestrian club at her school and is its only member? going through all that trouble just to see mikage in competitions? probably getting hounded by faculty to get more members or to give it up? all that for a girl? interesting. very interesting

anyways the day hachiken collapses she drops by to be a general nuisance, but when aki asks for her help, she calls her dad to bring her horse with zero hesitation

the second she hears aki intends to go to college, she decides she wants to go too (once again under the guise of "competition", which is fooling absolutely nobody by now)

when she fails and shingo pushes her to try again, she complains that it means she would be aki's junior.

what this means :

a- confirmation that just like many other things literally her only motivation is to be with aki

b- as pointed out by hachiken, she fully believes that aki will get in through her recommendation

when aki's recommendation is accepted she brags about knowing aki had it in her all along. and like, she's right. she believed in mikage the whole time (even though she shows it in her weird ojou-sama ways)

bonus: she hates men

the entire thing is hilarious in and of itself (imo she is THE funniest character) but what makes it funnier is the idea that arakawa didnt put in a love rival at the request of her editor, just to write a character that is essentially a mockery of the idea.

even funnier than that is the fact that hachiken was sitting there, worrying sick about the possibility of aki and komaba being together because of a few misunderstandings, when this girl is essentially claiming that she will steal his gf whenever she's on the page

Of the things currently airing, I would recommend the following.

My Personal Weatherman (Gaga, Viki)

This show has been a fascinating examination of a new-ish relationship with some heavy kink overtones. This show is not so much about the chase, and so much more about how these two could actually function long-term. I've enjoyed reading @lutawolf kink talk about this one, and the leads have some of the best sexual chemistry we've seen from Japan.

If It's With You (Gaga)

We have a sexually active and assured gay protagonist who knows who he is and what he wants. He's also a menace with some sort of trauma. I am absolutely obsessed with him. This show is going to be very short at 5 episodes, so it may be one you don't want to miss out on. Truly, this has felt like nothing else we've had in a long time and I've been thinking about it for days.

Love in Translation (iQIYI)

This just finished and is an absolute delight. This is one of the better executions of a workplace romance we've seen this year, and was the show anchoring me with all the heavy shows and silly shows airing at once. This show had so much heart to it. It had some wobbles towards the end, but the kindness underpinning this show makes it one of my favorites of the year.

Make It Right (Grey)

You should still finish this. I still believe this is one of the most important foundational works for what made Thai BL start to feel more queer. This show asked big questions about male sexual maturation and I don't think any of the Thai high school shows have gone there since.

We Best Love (WeTV)

You probably haven't watched much from Taiwan, but this is one of the best examples of why we remain committed to them. Sam Lin and Yu have hands down the top three best paired chemistry in BL.

Rainbow Prince (YouTube)

This camp masterpiece from last year is one of my favorite shows. It is a hot mess, but the songs are fun and the plot is ridiculous.

Sorry I took so long to answer this, but I wanted to have the time to be as thorough as possible because this is an AWESOME question! Thank you for asking me!!

I also want to preface this by saying I haven't had a TON of time to read as many fics as I want to, so if anyone wants to reblog this with more queer Pedro boy fics I would love that!

For now, here are the ones I've read and loved:

Into the Beat of the Night by @perotovar has the sweetest Frankie I've ever read and a badass non-binary OC named River. Their dynamic is so fun but so deeply caring and I CANNOT get enough of them. Their banter is always adorable, and there's a really good balance between fluff, smut, and light angst so far and I'm sooooo looking forward to the next chapter.

baby, i'm-a want you by @perotovar AGAIN they just won't quit with the incredible queer Pedro boy fics. Gay pornstar Javi P and Joel, shy Joel with a crush, all the PPCU boys do porn together, what more could you want???

Maverick by @for-a-longlongtime and its sequels. Of COURSE I can't make this post without gushing over this Tim Rockford x Marcus Pike x Frankie Morales series. Oh my god. It's so hot it will melt you, but also so sweet, and I look forward to updates like it's Christmas eve.

Sharing the Same Roots by @multifandomhoodies over on AO3. I'm not sure if they've cross-posted it here on Tumblr, but this was one of the first Pedro boy fics I ever read and I think about it a million times a day I think. t4t DinCobb set in WEST VIRGINIA!?! Mind was instantly blown, as I lived there for the first 21 years of my life. It paints such a serene, beautiful picture of a slow, happy, queer Appalachian existence that it makes me tear up. Super hot, super well-written, and Grogu is a fellow WVU Mountaineer which makes me chuckle. I wonder how many couches he's burned.

Catalyst by @ezrasbirdie Last but CERTAINLY not least, a fic that I re-read before bed time an embarrassing amount of times because it is SO!!! GOOD!!!! Frankie and Joel are my favorite Pedro boys, and the exploration of their relationship with each other and reader is so incredible. The way the emotions are written so naturally and so raw blows my mind every time I read. And AGAIN shy, flustered Joel??? My beloved. But also absolute menace Joel flustering Frankie??? STOP IT!!!

Overall i view Alastors role here as some flavor of queer platonic— he has the potential to be a caring partner but doesn't care much for romance specifically (yes my aromantic ass is projecting a lil shhhh)

My personal favorite take for them in canon is that eventually over the course of Alastors redemption he does eventually let Husk go— i have. Many feelings on that whole situation too but this is gonna be long already so SJDKEKDK just know i see them eventually getting to a point where they accept that neither of them are perfect and can let things go. Alastor considers Husk a very dear friend, and does in fact hold a high amount of respect for him, and Husk feels the same (although hes a little more Tsundere about it sksksksk)

Angel is very much so the glue that holds this ot3 together LOL

Like i think both Husk and Alastor fall for him first and through Angel find a way to actually communicate over the strange mix of feelings they've had with each other. Angels good at reading other people, he can tell they have *something* going on and isn't afraid to point it out.

I constantly see people making Angel hate Alastor but sorry no i do not agree at all.

Despite the initial impressions of each other, Alastor and Angel would be FANTASTIC friends. Once Alastor understands that Angels humor is just that, humor, hes not actually expecting anything from Al, he starts meeting Angel halfway on his jokes, adding onto them. Once they start to realize they can bounce off each other and actually bond oh god its OVER.

Alastor finds Angel actually very charming to be around, and Angel realizes Alastor isn't a prude or anything he just has some firm walls up.

God they'd be INSUFFERABLE together

You know that post thats like "i ship this ship but like specifically as a comedy duo" yeah thats radiodust in my heart LOL

They'd be the bane of Husks existence together.

Also Alastor is capable of being a huge gentleman and i can see him treating Angel to fancy dinners and "Dates". Alastor has no care for romance but he knows how to treat someone well and Angel basks in the attention.

They'd just VIBE so well!! Maybe its bc i spent years watching the hunniecast streams but god i think Radiodust make such a fun duo. If they put their heads together they can be a menace to society.

Alastor also gives off cheek/hand kiss vibes. He would do that shit and Angel is a sucker for it (both Husk and Alastor would treat him so well okay spider boy deserves it)

Husk and Angel have the most "Romantic" dynamic of the three ofc, and Alastor is happy to spend their date nights off doing his own thing. Huskerdusts dynamic is pretty much exactly as canon— i don't have many notes to add to it i Genuinely love how canon is handling them so far.

I won't dive off into nsfw here kwkfkwkd but i DO have thoughts on how that would work in this lineup.

I will say overall i see Angel as hypersexual, Husk as Demi, and Alastor as a sex neutral-Ace.

Like he just doesn't GET it but he can find some compromises if one of his partners askes.

Colours matter as we know. So what is your favourite colour? In life or in colour coded boys.

My favorite color is yellow. It is the best color. No other color can even touch it. It's the most superior color, and all these other colors are poop in comparison.

As far as characters, my latest color-coded boys obsession are the newest entry I've started noticing - Multicolored Menace. They are an updated queerer version of Happy Humans (the light colored character in a "dark versus light" color dynamic). I like that they are chaotic characters just like all the colors they wear, and I love that it takes the traditional dark versus light dynamic and makes it GAYER. It's amazing!

However, I'm partial to Yellow/Orange Oddities since they align with my favorite color, and they are so rare. Unlike the other colors, these Oddities haven't been consistently paired with another specific color. They work well with everyone because they are energetic, communicative, and hopeful, yet they are cautious, like me!

Which is why I was so irritated by A Boss & A Babe because it had the opportunity to have TWO Yellow/Orange Oddities yet made their color scheme warm. (bleh!)

And I fear Middleman's Love is changing Jade's color. In Bed Friend, he was a Yellow/Orange Oddity, but all the BTS images from Middleman's Love's filming haven't shown him in these colors. (boo!)

But I think Love Upon a Time is giving us a HISTORICAL ODDITY, which is so brilliant! If someone is going to stand out in time, if a show wants to highlight that a person doesn't belong, if a show wants to tell us someone is ODD (aka queer), make his color yellow! It's bright. It stands out. It can't hide. IT'S GENIUS!

So yeah, I love all colors, but yellow is my favorite. I also love all color-coded boys, but Yellow/Orange Oddities are my favorites. Moving forward, I'm going to be very excited to keep tracking these Multicolored Menace. We are now getting bi-colored characters (which I HATE) and multicolored characters, so like, what a time to be alive, right?!

But no matter what, we've only gotten one Yellow Yal, our reigning monarch, Daisy.

What is the point of what the black menaces are doing? (I don't use tik tok so I have no context.)

The Black Menaces are an activist group of Black students at BYU and they started the "asking BYU students..." trend on tiktok, but they're questions are usually asking about political stances, knowledge of feminist history, knowledge of African American history and issues, opinions about queer people etc. They are working to expose the ignorance and bigotry that too often grows within LDS spaces, especially BYU. They are members of our community, looking to improve discussions about our biases. (To my understanding, I don't know any of them personally, maybe they would disagree)

But people have taken this trend to make fun of people for not swearing, or not liking pornogrpahy, or just being "cringey and religious" in general. And the questions they ask aren't like ... asking people to examine why those things are taboo, they're like "what's your favorite swear word" and "would you rather watch porn or die a horrible death" like ... just things to allow the internet to laugh at us.

So in short, The Black Menaces ask BYU students to reveal and examine our biases, whereas people picking up on the trend just want to paint us as idiots. The Black Menaces also do other activist work, like just recently they helped organize a protest against queerphobia

(Note: I'm queer and religious, I don't agree with most of the BYU students featured in these videos but this is still my school. I want the bigotry to be seen and rooted out but there's no need to tease people just for being religious)

aaaaaaa this one's hard!!! i've only written small town so far (which you can read here lol thank you for giving me the chance to shamelessly promote my work losty 🤎) so what i'm gonna do is share my fave five chapters instead!

chapter 3 - tonight she comes - this is when we meet our girlie dot, and it was my first time writing the hellfire club all together in the same room. here's where we start to explore their dynamic as a group and it's full of foreshadowing for things that haven't happened yet 👀

chapter 10 - that's what friends are for - this chapter has everything i love: the hellfire club spending time together, the gentle will they/won't they between eddie and dot, deep conversations with chrissy, dnd, and a lot of bickering. i consider this one to be one my best chapters and it was the longest i'd written at the time! 💕

chapter 13 - you give good love - another entry into one of the chapters i'm most proud of and, again, it includes a lot of the things i love about small town: wayne being a menace, chrissy being eddie's biggest supporter, dot and eddie realising that it isn't them individually vs the world. this was their first big fight, and i had been working on this fic for around a year by the time i posted this specific chapter so it'll always be special to me. got 3/3 laughs with the sponge bit amongst my friends so that's a win to me! 🧽

chapter 15 - don't you want me - the whole sleepover at gareth's will forever be one of the bits i've enjoyed writing the most about this fic. i adore that little gremlin and so much of him (and the rest of hellfire, really) is based on friends i've had throughout the years. there is something so very pure about a platonic friendship (stobin, am i right?) and if chrissy is eddie's steve, i wanted to give dot her very own robin in gareth. this was me officially confirming that both eddie and dot are bi/queer and bonding over rocky horror, which felt important to me as a queer girlie. it's my fic and i can do what i want, lol 💗💜💙

chapter 20 - self control - the moment everyone was waiting for!!! the love confession!!! it was messy, and so uniquely them, you can't take it and give it to anyone else because it's so dot and eddie that there's just no other way around it: if it had to happen, it was going to be like this. other things i loved about this chapter were allowing nancy to dip her toes into dealing with her grief over barb (more on that later lol), the hellfire class of '86 being there for one another, and finally getting to kick andy's bitch ass down!!!! 😈

honourable mention goes to chapter 14 - missing you, which is the mother's day chapter and deals with eddie and dot's mothers who passed away when they were children. i wrote this one while actively mourning someone i'm still thinking about every day and while i will probably be dealing with this for a long time, this chapter helped me purge a lot of my inner demons and helped heal more than i thought it would. it's my love letter to my person who isn't here anymore, and i know that she'd be proud of it because one of the last conversations i got to have with her was about me writing small town, and she was so happy and interested about it.

i'm in the process of writing chapter 23 right now and hopefully i'll get it out this week if i can stop crying at work for more than five minutes lmao. again thank you losty for giving me the opportunity to talk about small town, i love this fic, and i love writing it and talking about it. 🥰

Episode 17 has so many incredible, heartbreaking, heartwarming, hilarious and frustrating moments; it’s one of my favorite episodes thus far for sure. A friend of mine told me that he fell in love with the Bells Hells in this episode and I’m inclined to agree. 

Between episode 14 and 17 I feel like the rest of them have really come together and have had the opportunity to show some of their softer, less silly sides. I love the silly, but sometimes it can get in the way of genuine character moments and those episodes are full of both, which is great. 

Here’s a little roundup of my impressions of the characters so far:

Ashton: This guy is so dumb. Like, can’t get any dumber. They are so preoccupied with being the unattached one, that every of their actions just screams “I don’t deserve to be loved and I will show you why!” - I love his short temper, I love his reluctant admiration of the others and I particularly love that Taliesin gets to play someone who is queer as fuck, yet determined to be disagreeable. That is just peak Taliesin PC design and I think he is having a blast with Ashton so far.

Fearne: This fawn is so smart. And I mean that genuinely. Fearne knows exactly how she can utilize her charm and her assumed innocence to get away with the most outrageous lies and actions. I’m sort of glad that Little Mister has faded into the background a little. I feel like Fearne needs nobody to help her shine. And it’s fascinating to me that it had never before occurred to me that Ashley would be perfect at playing a fey, since Ashley exudes heaps of fey energy even when she is just being herself. I’m curious how she will handle more dramatic scenes in the future. Fearne has shown that she can genuinely care about others, but there is a clear sense that she - as any fey creature - struggles with the dark grey morals of her heritage.

F.C.G.: Sam is a menace. It is known. But I wonder how much of a menace he is being with F.C.G. I think there is a very good chance that Sam knows very little of their backstory, or how much of it is true. The memories Imogen saw in him could’ve been placed there or altered. I adore that Sam chose a race/class/subclass combination that doesn’t cater to his usual dry sarcasm as Nott’s and Scanlan’s builds did. Instead he gets to experiment with humor that stems from F.C.G.’s genuine concern and their unawareness of certain social cues. I’m sure the other Riegel shoe will drop soon enough, but until then I’m just happy to receive puzzle piece after puzzle piece of this robit’s tragic past. 

Imogen: Until recently I really thought Laura had built a sweet, soft horse-girl sorceress. Oh what a fool I was! Not that she isn’t all of those things, but Imogen is so much more multi-facetted than I had originally understood. She is driven and curious. She is intrigued by power and convinced of her own abilities. She apologizes to people for invading their minds, but she also enjoys learning other people’s secrets. She is confident! She knows her worth! She understands how to get people to do what you want (not in a strictly manipulative way, but she has definitely learned that showing compassion is a way to get people to talk). I’m super intrigued by her and thus afraid to delve too deep into fandom interpretations of Imogen, because Laura’s track record is 1. build intricate, layered character, 2. fandom builds one-dimensional fanon version of said character, 3. fandom gets mad when Laura dares to stick to her original design for said character (one of the reasons why I’m not massively into glasses!Imogen - it just triggers a fight or flight response in my brain).

Laudna: What a ballsy character design! What a choice of a backstory and a patron! I love that she came up with this and Matt said “yes, and” to all of it. I agree with Orym that Laudna is fascinating not because of her backstory, but rather because she is who she is despite of her backstory. I’m a big believer that great tragedy functions like a fork in the road of your capacity for compassion. Either you become the least or the most compassionate version of yourself, and I adore that Marisha went with the latter. And for some reason I keep thinking of Laudna’s connection to Vox Machina and that she feels like the rebirth of Kerrek’s line in his letter to Keyleth: “Did you know that there are some seeds that cannot sprout unless they are first burned?“ I wish Laudna could’ve had the life she deserved, but I think her capacity to love and feel deeply is informed by the tragedy of her past. 

Chetney: Detective!Travis and comic-relief!Travis are two of my favorite Travises, so of course I adore Chetney. I’m so glad he finally gets to live his lycanthropy dreams! I’m curious about Chetney’s backstory and how much of it will activate the other kind of Travis I love, which is the what-makes-a-good-man!Travis. I love when he gets to explore the themes of masculinity, bravery and worthiness and I feel like Chetney might give him the opportunity to examine them from a very different perspective. Or maybe the wolf will die in three sessions, which is also entirely possible. Travis doesn’t trust Sam and I don’t trust Travis. C’est la vie!

Orym: This little guy! What a wee man! In ExU I was not super into Orym because I felt like he faded into the background next to so much color and character, but it is always the quiet ones who worm their way into my heart in the end. In one way or another Liam’s characters always carry an unspeakable amount of grief with them and that grief usually is for a future that was stolen from them. Vax, Caleb and Orym all had to come to terms with the loss of a version of themselves/their lives that they didn’t get to see or live. But with Orym there is a new kind of twist to this baseline of grief: There seems to be an immense amount of hope stored in this tiny dude; a hope for a life that’s worth living or a future that’s worth fighting for or a revenge that is worth pursuing. There is not a lot of Orym (physically), but every inch of this small man is full of love and hope and a deep sense that there are things worth fighting for. 

I thought about listing my favorite relationship dynamics so far, but the truth is that it is... all of them. I genuinely enjoy all of their interactions and how the characters mesh with each other. Eleven more episodes until I’m caught up and can laugh about my naïve impressions of them as of episode 17.

Thai QL Favorite Tag Game

Oh this is going to be fun! Thank you sm @rocketturtle4 for the tag. I feel special 😄.

Anygay... I got into BL about a year ago when I stumbled upon a Bad Buddy reaction video. I watched the first 10 minutes and my brain lit up. I remember thinking - ok Orya, this is something else. You NEED to go watch this show. Now! and that's what I did. I binged BBS and rewatched it a few times until I felt I was ready to dive into the world of BL. My only other QL media experiences were western so this felt very different.

I do have to say that in addition to watching the shows - being here, reading, and taking part in the discussions around these shows has helped me process some things that I haven't had the ability to do in my day to day life. So, I have great appreciation for the genre as well as the wonderful humans that are taking part in these discussions.

And with that said - shall we...?

Favorite Thai QL - I have to say that for me it's a tie between I Told Sunset About You and 180 Degrees Longitude. Both these shows have managed to touch on some very specific queer experiences, to say very specific to me. These shows have managed to make me cry about my own experience (as opposed to just feeling for the characters). watching these shows was a therapeutic experience for me, and I will forever be grateful to them for it.

(However, I will NOT forgive the translators of 180DL for translating Mol as mom 98% of the time! So if you're watching the show take into account that almost every time the subs say mom - Pond is actually calling her by her name.)

Favorite Pairing - I think my favorite pair is First and Khaotung. They have great chemistry and it's always fun to watch them together. Even in MLC where they hardly interact, once they are together on screen they are ON. I also like the way they talk about their friendship.

Most Underrated Actor - in the wake of the most excellent La Pluie, I will have to give it to Title and Pee. They are seriously good.

Favorite Character - so many to choose from... Why are you making me choose?!

Well, if I HAVE to choose, I think I'll go with Ayan from The Eclipse. He is a menace, he is damaged, he really loves Akk, he really loves his mother, he has a purpose, he will fight for his beliefs. And I am here for all of it.

Favorite Side Character - I'm going with two characters (please don't make me choose)

Chot from Step by Step - in addition to the fact that I simply love him, I think he provides very important rep and allows a discussion about the complexities of being queer in non-queer spaces.

Ink from BBS - she is very real. She knows what's up and she will call you out on your bs. I also think that her presence in Pat and Pran's life gives them perspective. It's like she's there to bounce ideas and feelings off. Especially Pat who comes to her to check himself and his feelings (if this makes sense...)

Favorite Scene in a QL - again, I had to narrow it down to 3 and I can't choose. So 3 it is!

For the family and agenda - The group dinner at Pat and Pa's room with Ink and Pran. first of all I love that they have each other and can have this family time with people they can truly be themselves with. Then, I think the conversation they have around the table is important and offers a glimpse into P'Aof's BL-to-QL agenda.

For the beauty and feels - this! From Not Me

For the personal queer experience - Step by Step and the Jeng Intervention. Jeng sitting in a room having to listen to people discuss his sexuality like he's not even there, talking over his head, othering him and leaving him no room to offer anything to the discussion other than an apology, when actually, bottom line, they want the gossip. Say what you will about Step by Step, but this scene depicts an experience that I haven't seen addressed in other Thai bls.

Favorite Line in a QL - this is the first thing that came to mind 😄

Most Anticipated QL (& why?) - I'm gonna have to go with almost everyone and say Only Friends. Why? Because first, Jojo. Then, I think that this is going to be something very different to what we usually get to see. The fact that this show is allowed to have all the mess + partner switching + gays that are gay and want to be gay with each other? It's a win in my book!

I don't mind that they will probably get together with their 'official' partner at the end, but just the fact that they are allowed to have a queer past (or present) with other characters, that is present on screen, is very different. We get that a little bit with Allan and Wen in MLC and I'm looking forward to seeing this in Only Friends.

Healthiest Relationship in a QL - PatPran hands down. And I feel more stongly about this after the Our Skyy 2 ep. These two are together by choice and that is what will keep them together. They talk about things, they are aware of their issues, and they are willing to listen and compromise for each other. I loved that the OS2 special helps us see how their 2 years separation (on bbs 12) is not such a big deal for them. They know that they choose to be together and that it's not a temporary thing. Therefore, what are 2 years in the long run...

Most Toxic Relationship in a QL - I'm going with a non-romantic relationship here and I have to give it to Wang/sasiwimol from 180DL.

Guilty Pleasure Series - House of Stars! I LOVE this show. It is insane and unhinged and peak soap opera. The subs are only vaguely related to what the characters are saying. People are jumping in and out of each other's beds. I said it before and I'll say it again - I am here for all 4,971 episodes of multiple generations of this hot mess! 😂

Okay, I just finished writing the thesis below. I'm back from the future. A lot of what you're about to read is pure emotion, so I apologize that it's not, uh. Well structured or especially rational. Queer as Folk was very formative for me, so my thoughts on it are very formless. \:D/

I watched Queer as Folk in high school, and it was a core experience. I vaguely remember writing Brian/Justin fic, but I think I mainly just read, and unfortunately, all of the fic I read was on LiveJournal, so I have no idea how to find it anymore. I'm really, really bad with names and titles, so I'd really only know them if I saw them again. :')

I have hot takes, though!

As far as fandom goes, the US version was phenomenal. So much fic. So much fic, and I loved it so much. The fanvids, the art, the meta, etc. It was such a great fandom.

BUT as a show, I preferred the UK version. I thought it was better crafted, the story and characters felt a lot stronger, and the dialogue was fantastic. It felt more inclusive in every way, and it had this…cozy warmth to it. Even at his worst, Stuart is nowhere near as much of a menace as Brian, and I think that's because he has Vince, and Brian has Michael.

(I didn't like Michael. At all. \:D/ The actor is lovely! I just regularly pined for the character to be pushed through a nineteenth floor window and then get stepped on by an elephant tourist visiting family at the Pittsburgh Zoo.)

The US version also screamed Written by White Cis Gay Men Who Held a Weird Grudge Against Lesbians and Didn't Believe Bisexuality Is Real. I was a "definitely straight except for that one time and that other time and that other other time I had suspiciously queer thoughts and also argued a shade too passionately about queer rights at the dinner table" teenager, and while I loved Brian and Justin as a ship, the UK version made me feel like I could find friends who'd feel like family one day. (And it came true, and they're queer, too.)

I think of the US version of Queer as Folk as fandom fodder. After every episode, I'd dive into LiveJournal, read fics, meta, look up fanvids, etc. I learned so much from Elder Queers who talked about safe sex and the importance of getting tested and all the things either referenced in the show or totally ignored that Elder Queers were like, "This was ignored but if you're ever in Justin's situation, here is what you do, please promise you'll do this."

The UK version is the one I rewatch when I want to revisit that warm, safe feeling.

And it'll always fuck my brain up that the US showrunners of Queer as Folk watched Stuart fuck a fifteen-year-old that was blatantly framed as "this is a bad thing, Stuart is doing a bad thing, everyone is aware that this is a bad thing, this is very bad, Stuart" and thought, "Okay, the bad thing is that he's fifteen, so let's age him up to seventeen and make him the love interest instead of the best friend who's the same age."

MIND. BLOWN.

I mean, it explains why Michael's all [evocative hand gestures]. His English counterpart actually ended up with his hot Irish best friend. And, like, Vince is obsessed with Dr. Who, so they gave Michael comic books? Like? Why not Star Trek? And he's obsessed with Brian and has the same soul-destroying crush that Vince has on Stuart, but there's a point to Vince's crush on Stuart the point is that they end up together and Nathan is a high school boy who is genuinely meant to be a blip on the radar in the background of their story.

It's been long enough that I don't hate Michael anymore, I'm just still fascinated by CowLip's bizarre story decisions.

Here's how I'll summarize my complicated relationship with the US version of Queer as Folk:

Season five was an insult to me personally, and I never watched the last episode. That stupid ending reversed all five seasons of Brian's character arc and landed him exactly where he was in the first episode, only multiple years older. And CowLip talked about it like it was brilliant and not a pathological misunderstanding of how storytelling is meant to operate to connect with audiences.

But.

I remember watching the Babylon bombing episode. Viscerally. I was staying at my sister's house, and I waited until everyone fell asleep. I snuck into their home office to watch the episode on their computer because I kept all queer media I watched secret from everyone in my very conservative family. I turned the volume down to one bar, kept the lights off, and held my shallow breath whenever the house made any kind of noise. Because Brian had never said "I love you" before, and this was it, because he thought Justin would be one of those corpses rolled out on a gurney from the club where they met, where their friends and family all gathered, the only place they felt safe being gay.

And many years later, when something similar happened far, far away at Pulse in Orlando, a memory surfaced of secretly watching an episode about love and desperation and grief. Of feeling caged inside a sexuality prescribed to me. And it was the first time I came out on social media.

Because it was a ridiculous show in some ways, and a terribly written one sometimes, but I think it also cut to the quick for many of us who just…didn't have anything else. We didn't have many options back then, and the fandom was massive, and it nudged me a little closer to understanding who I am and who I love.

2Cutie2Pie Ep 3 Stray Thoughts

Last week, we used avoidance decently for the first time in this series. Nu-Kuea received an offer from Cosmixo Entertainment in Korea, and this will inevitably affect their wedding plans. Speaking of which, neither are on the same page about their wedding despite the nudges from Yi and Kon Diao. Syn and Nuer continue to have the most fascinating relationship, what with the way piety impacts them. Having a good time, honestly.

I like these two so much more when they're expressing themselves clearly to each other.

NuNew is a pretty good crier.

I do like the dynamic between these two. Ever since @shortpplfedup called this a bodice-ripper I've enjoyed it so much more.

What the hell is going on with Yi and Lian??

Nuer's steadfast support of Syn is really touching.

Nu-Kuea is finally learning some knife skills, and ALSO PULLING A COUNTER LIFT ON LIAN!!!

Oh I like this morning in bed scene. Lian is making Nu-Kuea get up, but takes the opportunity to ask about an unspoken boundary that has formed in their sexual relationship. I like that Lian noticed, but hasn't asked about it in months since he usually waits for Kuea to say something. I like that the answer was actually sweet.

Yi is much more relaxed since everything is clear. It's refreshing.

I am actually curious to see more unpacking of Yi and Kon Diao in the future. Glad Kon Diao followed him to bed.

Holy shit do I have a lot to say about this bed scene with Syn and Nuer. It Four Moons (2014) and Love Stage!! (TH) for favorite first time scenes.

First let's talk about how Nuer is very clear about his intentions as he asks permission to remove barrier and get closer. Next, I actually like that they had a mishap while making out. We haven't had a first time that had to be figured out since maybe Four Moons (2014), and that's my favorite first time of all time. Third, moving Syn's hands to pull Nuer's shirt off is one of the hottest things we've seen in forever. Fourth, Nuer is so patient about advancing things with Syn, even as he accidentally gets kicked (likely from being tickled). Fifth, Syn is a menace for the amount of mishaps they've sustained. Still, they both seem satisfied that they tried.

So much waiting and anticipation. I will riot if they don't get married next week.

I find it hard to believe they won't have a plan for rain considering how much it rains in Thailand.

Time for lesbian flags history!!!

Ok SO idk if you know this but this

Is the labrys flag. It was created by a gay man in 1999, but the symbols in it were being used by lesbians for decades, sometimes centuries before. It has really cool meanings! The color purple is used by the saphic sommunity, as you may know, because of Sappho, who used to give purple flowers to her lovers. If I'm not wrong, in the 1950s lesbians and wlw in general were excluded from one of the first internacional feminist meetings, called the lavender menace, and accused of being a threat to the movement. In the labrys flag we also have the black triangle which is to represent the saphics and feminists who were murdered during the holocaust ( the triangles were their organization system, black for feminists and sapphics, pink for gay man, red for Jewish ppl, etc). The black and pink triangles were both widely used by the lgbt movement as resignified symbols. Nevertheless, they are no longer being used, and out of respect for Jewish sapphics there's now a version of the sapphic flag without the black triangle.

Then we get to the main symbol : the labrys ax itself!! It is said to have been a symbol of goodness Artemis, protecter of children and women. As a sapphic symbol it's very strong and one of my favorite things! ( I have labrys earrings )

Now, there's also the lipstick lesbian flag, which I hate and it's terrible! Created by a transphobe, racist, biphobic person and the concept of lipstick lesbian itself was not created by the community but by men who sexualized lesbians.

Nevertheless, from it came the sunset flag, which has really cool meanings, is super duper cute and awesome!!

There's also the sapphics community flag, but unfortunately I don't have much research done on that one. :(

I actually just learned about the lipstick flag and it’s creator unfortunately but it didn’t know about the history of the labrys flag or the symbolism of the sunset flag!

And you asked so here’s some random queer facts:

The bi flag was originally designed by Michael Page in 1998 with pink at the top representing women, royal blue on the bottom representing men, and lavender purple in the middle representing the combination of the attraction to the two (although many bisexuals date outside of that pool) and it’s intention was to a) bring more eyes to bisexuality and b) to start a Bisexual Visibility Day, which was made September 23 the following year.

In 2009, Rachel Crandell got on Facebook and started Trans Visibility Day on her own, and so now every year on March 31st trans and gender non-conforming people’s voices and we are able to further bring up issues that endanger our lives.
