taeyong knocks on the doorframe. he hates to interrupt johnny's flow, but– "how's it going?"

johnny grunts, waving a hand in a gesture that taeyong has learned means come in. taeyong approaches on little cat feet and peers over johnny's shoulder at the page the latter is writing on. it's covered in scratched-out lines and notes jotted in the margins with lots of question marks. one says in bold pen, THIS IS DUMB. YOU ARE NOT FUNNY.

"not so good, then?" he ventures, dropping a kiss on johnny's head.

"well," sighs johnny, "my mom thinks i'm funny."

Have you made a post about Johnyong relationship? I'm just curious. Johnny and Doyoung are clearly Tae's closest friend in NCT but to me the way Tae sees Johnny as a friend is different from how he sees Doyoung

I haven't.

I don't watch content with only 95-liners, so I don't know JohnTae as well as the neo relationships I have interest in. My answer will thus lack nuance.

The thing that attacts attention is that Johnny and Taeyong don't share Doyoung.

Doyoung is taken by Jaehyun, as "the other two friends" JohnTae have an obvious option of uniting, forming a pair (like shippers like to imagine, JaeDo and JohnTae are often a package deal in fanfics) and joining forces against Jaehyun or in teasing Doyoung. That doesn't happen. When TaeDo are busy with teasing each other, Johnny keeps his distance. When JohnDo are talking or bickering, Tae often comes in and disrupts them, inserts himself in their bubble.

Taeyong is the neo who gives Johnny attention, tries to make him feel included, not forgotten. He invites Johnny to dinners, he praises him, clings to him if they sit near. Johnny needs and wants a close friend in 127, so why does he chase Doyoung and doesn't settle with Tae instead?

Johnny and Taeyong are the oldest trainees, they are same-year line, which is important for Koreans (and helps form friendships as everyone is equal), Taeyong invited Johnny to his sister wedding, they both chose to be flatmates on the 5th floor, Johnny buys Taeyong cakes, they play video games, they do vlives and flirt on IG, Taeyong calls Johnny his bro. And yet, Doyoung steals all the attention.

So yeah, Johnny and Taeyong cherish and support each other, they have the bond, and yet they are not as close to each other as both of them with Doyoung. I think it comes from them both needing the same thing, something they can't give each other, but can receive from Doyoung. They both want attention and adjustment to their characters.

For example, Taeyong has mood swings, he goes from a hyper mode to a total recluse. Johnny doesn't know how to reach to the depressed Taeyong, so he can't help even when he wants (he talked about it), Doyoung can do it (Tae trusts him intimately, is ready to be vulnerable with him). Johnny also often keeps away from super hyper Taeyong. It's like when they are too excited they are on different frequencies. The way I see it, JohnTae meet in the middle, they are compatible when they are both in stable cheerful mood, when both act as adults. When Johnny was asked to choose a partner for zombie apocalypsis, he chose Tae because Woo requires taking care of, while with Tae they can share things to do.
