I'm so glad you asked @flowerofbuffoonery! For context this was about trying to get Nikolai and Dazai into a cage to talk and it spiraled out of control

ALRIGHT OPERATION GET NIKOLAI AND DAZAI TO A CAGE IN THE CENTER OF THE EARTH IS A GO.

step 1: dig a hole

Step 2: realize digging a hole won't work

Step 3: go to suribachi city, grab a new child, conduct experiments on them and form another arahabaki

Step 4: force them to their tipping point until the power overwhelms them and they cause another explosion that leads to the center of the earth<3

Step 5: drop a cage of birds in the hole. Nikolai will go in holes. Drop a bunch of orphans in the hole. Dazai will go in there<3

Bing bang boom! We're only going to cause a few issues in the process.

One of my favorite things about this ship is the trust. Just the complete 100% I've got your back you've got my back even after all this time apart I know I can rely on you bone deep trust. It's one of the best things about the relationship.

Cloud and Tifa's childhood friend history is really cute, but the way it quickly breaks away from a complete shared history when Cloud leaves is really interesting to me. I like how they have this sort of semi-understanding of each other based on how they used to be, but so much has changed between them that they kind of have to rediscover their relationship again as new people. Separating and coming back together as more developed individuals is one of my favorite romance tropes.

They are both very protective of each other and are always shown to be caring about or worrying about the other. I really love how much they put each other's safety above almost everything, and how they're both strong enough to have each other's backs in a fight.

Malkolai

The flirting alkjsdflkjsd. Nikolai is a chaotic bisexual disaster and Mal is so into it I love their dynamic so much. That entire scene in s2 with the weapons has such insane amounts of flirting going on and it's amazing.

I love the compassion and understanding! How Nikolai sympathizes with him over the whole Firebird thing and comes to value Mal as a person with feelings and emotions outside of Alina. I really liked their developing friendship and deep respect for each other.

The inherent balance of somebody who knows the land inside and out and who is an expert tracker being with somebody who is an expert sailor and knows the sea like the back of his hand is brilliant. I like that no matter where they go, that if they are together, they will never be lost.

like given how we followed fyodor this whole time and there is no reason for him to place a note somewhere this random or. god forbid. ask for help. this leaves only one other option (unless asagiri pulls a fast one on us and brings pushkin or goncharov back for some reason. or someone else entirely who knows)

which then raises the questions of

1 what the note said (given that it seems to be a folded paper, it makes sense to assume what we saw was just a cover for a letter inside)

2 is what sigma's doing now a part of it, or completely independent

3 what would nikolai need help with, and why couldn't he ask sigma for it beforehand given that he was the one to bring him there so they had plenty of time to strategize. is it because he didn't expect how things turned out and now wants to change them? is he trying to mess with sigma for some reason? maybe it's bc asagiri said he originally didn't plan for sigma to be alive for this so he simply didn't plan that specific detail this far ahead and this is how he's fixing it lol

hi anon! thank you so much 💙 i have no experience writing alina (haven't read any books with her), and the only book with nikolai outside the SoC duology that i've read is rule of wolves -- but i have written nikolai!

i found that in the particular scene i wrote, nikolai's outward persona is most similar to writing jesper and nina, but inside he's also a mix of wylan (fathers, inheritance, understated intelligence) and kaz (cunning, strategy, deception), particularly with his practical calculations and his many identities

what i do when i need to write a character i haven't read much of is to search for lists of quotes said by that character or about that character -- because usually these lists already have the highlights about them -- and the thing i really look for in the quotes isn't just the voice of the character but also the themes related to the character so i know what metaphors to link them to!

and if anyone else here has any better tips, please do say 💕
