The Bread Arc

Episode 12 marks the bittersweet end of the all-important Farmhouse bread arc - we’ve watched Kinn and Porsche get through their distant, professional phase in episode 2:

Okay, but seriously - we all agree that Farmhouse Bread is the most unhinged product placement on the show, right? And I think most fans will point to the second appearance - sexy breadtime - as the unhinged moment of the show.

The third appearance - the prisoner’s lunch - also gets it’s due credit (though let’s face it, this is the most edible meal Kinn serves on the show - sorry OK! noodles)

But I don’t think we talk about appearance one enough. And I get it, on the surface it seems pretty cut and dry to introduce Farmhouse Bread to the show by having our characters go to a literal product launch for it. But the thing is, Kinn didn’t just go to the event - he worked it

It’s implied that Kinn is, at the very least, an investor in Farmhouse Bread. Which means this real company approved (paid!) this show to tell the world that they’re in business with the mafia.

So they seem to lump Xena in with the sci-fi category.

I wouldn’t call it sci-fi, nor supernatural to be honest.

It’s definitely fantasy and action-adventure but it doesn’t really have sci-fi or supernatural elements to it aside from maybe one or two episodes. It has a fair bit of horror but that’s only because Sam Raimi produces it. It’s a genre show, yes, but that covers a wide range. That can be anything from like a detective/crime/investigation/spy show like X Files or CSI (both are sci-fi dramas) to something like Sliders and Star Trek which are definitely science fiction as they deal with time-travel and inter-dimensions and alt-realities but from a purely technological and philosophical lens.

Xena/Hercules are shows all about ancient mythology (I’d say “Greek” mythology but Xena was all over the map. She went to China and Japan and even India. I would honestly laugh my ass off seeing a layout for it).

They’re Percy Jackson before Percy Jackson existed.

Still a genre show. Still fantasy. But certainly have very little to do with supernatural or science fiction genres. Maybe with Hercules you could get away with that definition. But Xena - Xena is more gods, warlords and kings. Every now and again it deals with otherworldly monsters but otherwise - it’s human conflict/drama.

I’d peg Xena as a fantasy/action-adventure show primarily. I wouldn’t necessarily refer to it as a drama or comedy as it does both and it does well at doing both. I mean back when Xena was airing, it was very normal and common for genres shows to do drama AND comedy simultaneously. To do half-an-half.

Buffy isn’t a straight up drama all the time.

Neither is Charmed.

Neither is Wynonna Earp.

That’s what makes them so damn enjoyable to watch.

I mean I haven’t seen the entirety of it but I’m pretty sure X Files is like this as well because it’s also a genre show. A lot of TV shows back then were genre shows - which meant that what you got was a mixed goody bag of stuff - it was never really just one thing only.

I have a friend who works in the industry and this person happens to know someone who knows what Jensen is currently working on, they didn’t tell me what it is because they know I’m a fan lol they just told me that the plan is to start filming later this year, to get released later next year, because of post production... it’s something that will change the game for him in their opinion and it's nothing related to supernatural.

I have heard about this as well and I hope we get to see it!!!

I thought Jensen had essentially confirmed he was working on something big at Amazon (at AHBL or Burcon?) and that he would be very busy later this year. Did that fall through?

With the way the industry is right now, it's better to refrain from getting excited until it starts filming, but even then, just because he films something doesn't mean we are going to see it (although that's more rare). Look at what happened with the Rust tragedy.

I do think that this current project has a better chance of getting off the ground because of who's attached to it, but I'm just trying not to get too attached because I was really excited about the project he was doing with Berlanti.

“He's had some bad luck with regards to the strike. He was supposed to be filming last December. There's a lot that got wiped clean during the strike, so just bad luck.” — any clues about what that was?

All I can say is that it would've been with Amazon and Amazon dropped a lot of projects with the strike. I don't know for sure that's why it was dropped, but that's what the rumor is.

To me, the reason that Rick Grimes is such a standout protagonist is that he very obviously isn't somebody who likes being a leader. He's fairly good at it, but he Hates it. His leadership has the same vibe as when a side character has to take over for the protagonist when they go missing or something. He's not an incompetent individual. He's just not completely suited for or desiring of the role; we see that in the series, especially in s1-4. To put it simply, I think he's a leader out of necessity, not because of any desire or natural proclivity.
