On this episode of Chicago Beer Pass, Brad Chmielewski and Nik White are reviewing their Oak Park Microbrew Review experience. As they share the details of this great event, they crack open cans of Beer #116 from Obscurity Brewing. Both the guys don’t know much about this brewery beyond them being in Elburn but it's nice to get to see what they have to offer.

At Oak Park Microbrew Review there were some great beers and even more rumors heard about what's happening in the Chicago beer scene including who is taking over Finch's space in the Brewing District.

I had a fun three-day weekend.

As I briefly mentioned earlier, I went to Chicago. Thursday I stopped halfway and spent the night at a bed & breakfast in Baraboo, WI.

Baraboo is where the Ringling Brothers started their circus of the same name in 1884. The B&B I stayed it the former home of one of the brothers.

I like the shared areas at B&Bs. There were only three other people there Thursday night. I didn't really get to mingle as they kept to themselves.

That typewriter would have been fun to use for my blog post. Sadly, it lacked wi-fi and Bluetooth connections. There was an old, hand-cranked phonograph in the next room that was fully functional.

Downtown Baraboo has plenty of bars (because it's Wisconsin). There were a number of restaurants and cafes too. The two-story brick buildings I like in small towns were plentiful. I logged a lot of steps walking up and down the streets, peering into windows. This is another town where I think it would have been fun to stay a week and try more bars and restaurants.

There are two breweries in Baraboo. Of course I visited both.

The first, I was told, has better food. Tumbled Rock is where I went for dinner and flight of beers. My burger and fries were most satisfying. The beer selection was impressive. Each of the five I sampled I would definitely buy again.

When I finished dinner I drove three miles back to my B&B and parked the car. Then I walked to the other brewery, the Al. Ringling Brewing Co.

Inside was neat. The coolers behind the bar, filled with cans of beer, had wooden doors, mechanical handles, and glass panels. The bartender told me it was a functional refrigerator.

This place was also a former home of a Ringling brother. But it was a mansion. There used to be a bowling alley in the basement for the family. The bar top is made from old sections of the bowling alley floor.

One of the brews on tap was Cherry Pie Fruit Sour with Swedish Fish. The nice, young bartender told me the brewers add a bag of the candy fish to the mix while making the sour.

I said I hope a serving of it comes with a Swedish Fish candy garnish. She grinned and promptly brought me a glass of it with the a Swedish Fish garnish!

The mention of fish made me want to suggest a Pizza Flavored Goldfish Beer, or at least free bowls of my favorite little crackers in lieu of pretzels, but the bartender had other customers to tend to. I missed that opportunity to pitch my idea. Maybe I should write a letter?

During my walk around town I noticed that Baraboo has a bit of a continental divide in its middle. At Oak Street, the numbered roads change from Avenues to Streets, or vice versa, depending on which way you walk. You can be at the intersection of 6th St and 6th Ave, and the two aren't even perpendicular.

The next morning I joined the other B&B guests for a waffle breakfast. This time I socialized with them and the owners of the B&B. We learned about the history of the city and all about the Ringling Bros. and their circus.

Fun time. Afterward I took my time driving to Chicago. I timed it right to miss the worst of rush hour. More about Chicago in a later post.

What’s to love about Oxted?

There’s so much to love about Oxted! This pretty, historic town famed for its large Arts & Crafts houses, timber framed stucco buildings and bustling high street, is situated at the foot of the North Downs in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Beauty (AONB).

Known as a wealthy commuter or “stockbroker belt” town, it was listed in the top twenty richest towns in Britain by the Daily Telegraph in 2011, but has been a favourite of city workers since the railway arrived in 1884 and linked the growing settlement to London and the South Coast. Oxted offers great transport links to the M25, by rail to London Bridge (33 minute direct train) and London Victoria (39 minutes), by Thameslink to St Pancras or Ashford for the Eurostar and direct train services to London Luton and easy access by car to both Gatwick (42 minutes) and Heathrow airports.

Historically, Oxted has always been a convenient stop-off between London and the South Coast, being the site of Roman Roads and ancient routes. Consequently, it also has a good number of lovely old pubs dotted through the old town and nearby settlements of Tandridge, Hurst Green, Limpsfield and Limpsfield Chart.

Mentioned in the Doomsday Book, the ancient Oxted settlement of “Oakstead” (place where oak trees grow) has been around since well before the Middle Ages, with remnants of a Roman Villa at Titsey Place to the east of the town. It is surrounded by beautiful countryside dotted with historic manor houses, farms and many large mansions that have been schools and hospitals or convalescent homes in their past, but have now been converted into fabulous apartments.

Oxted town centre straddles two sides of the railway line – Station Road East and West. It features lovely stucco wood framed buildings and is full of great shops, restaurants and bars, including Cucina Italian, Cattle & Cocktail, Toast Cafe, The Deli and The Ginistry Bar. There’s also a beautifully renovated art deco cinema with cocktail bar and a very popular theatre.

There are all the shops and services you need with plenty of excellent hair and beauty salons, clothes boutiques, homes & interiors and several high street banks. For food shopping, there’s also a huge Morrisons and smaller Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Co-op.

If you want to go further afield, then just take a 15-20 minute drive to the lovely shopping towns of Reigate and Sevenoaks as well as being only 35 minutes to Bluewater.

For those of the sporty persuasion, then there are many leisure facilities to keep you in shape, including the Tandridge Leisure Centre with its pool, sauna, gym and fitness classes, football, cricket and hockey clubs. You’ll also find the Limpsfield Club (tennis/squash) and Tandridge and Limpsfield Chart Golf Clubs as well as Oxted’s beautiful Master Park which is home to football, cricket and a small tennis club. Other local amenities include a livery yard and riding stables for equestrians and the local leisure centre with its pool, sauna, steam rooms and gym.

It’s also the home of the annual Oxted Beer Festival, a very popular event held every July that allows the locals to sample all the craft beers and ciders brewed in the area and attracts very well-known bands for its live music offering.

Much of the land that surrounds Oxted is National Trust or farmland, and sitting within a designated Green Belt area. It’s a beautiful place to live, with incredible views from many of its higher points, plenty of opportunity for outdoor recreation – walks, riding, cycling and running routes, with lots of very active clubs for both adults and children including the Oxted & Limpsfield Cricket Club that has children’s cricket every Friday evening, Holland Sports and Raw Skills football club.

If you’ve got children or grandchildren, there are some great schools, both state and private together with several outstanding child care and pre-schools.

There’s also lots of clubs and parks to keep the kids entertained, and in the neighbouring area of Limpsfield Chart, you’ll discover a wonderful area – the National Trust’s Homes for Woodland Creatures – created and maintained by volunteers who have made the most amazing circuit of beautifully crafted wooden animal houses, such as Hedgehog Hall and Badgers Run. It’s a superb place for all the family to enjoy.

Roggenbier by Live Oak Brewing Co.

Roggenbier is a style of German rye beer. I’ve had one other before, at Red Horn up in Cedar Park (a suburb of Austin). This one is from Live Oak, Austin’s oldest brewery. They specialize in German-style beer and I have to say, do it better than many out there. This beer does have that distinctive doughy German malt. It is also yeasty and does have a nice rye spiciness to it. It’s even a little woody though I don’t think it’s barrel-aged. It could use a bit more hops to balance everything out though I think.

Going on sale this Thursday, March 4th, Fremont Brewing & Floodland Brewing's Woodland Park Avenue North is a marriage of ideas.

Unbeknownst to the average imbiber, what’s in your glass takes weeks, months, and sometimes year’s to produce. Oh sure, breweries could grind up some grain, add a dash of hops, some water, and a splash of yeast and call it beer, but you wouldn’t want to drink it. Thankfully for the brewers at Fremont Brewing and nearby Floodland Brewing, didn’t just toss a bunch of ingredients into a stainless-steel tank and call it beer. Instead, they took their time both in coming up with a thoughtful recipe and in releasing a love letter called Woodland Park Avenue North.

But like so many collaborations, the genesis of this beer didn’t happen overnight. In fact, the brewers, well, here are their words on the matter.

“It all started with a busted, leaky mess of an oak foedre from France.  Adam Paysse, owner/brewer of Floodland, had purchased the foedre and upon receipt realized it would take a great deal more time and effort to bring it back to life than he had for the project and graciously gifted it to Fremont,” said Matt Lincecum, Co-Founder and Brewer of Fremont Brewing.

Much like breaking a bottle over the bow of a newly christened ship, Woodland Park Avenue North celebrates the re-christening of Fremont Brewing’s refurbished foedre, made with Adam’s help.

Made with a blend from Fremont’s Black Heron Project, Woodland Park Avenue North is made with malted and raw Washington triticale (a hybrid of both wheat and rye) and barley grown and malted at Mecca Grade in Oregon. Following this process, Woodland Park is mashed-hopped with aged, whole leaf hops from Washington, before being aged in a refurbished oak wine foedre, chaperoned by mixed yeast cultures from Fremont and Floodland. 

Post-fermentation, Woodland Park is re-fermented on Viognier grapes from Washington’s 2019 harvest, and then conditioned in the bottle producing natural carbonation. The result is a beer that is a reflection of The Black Heron Project goal of creating small-batch, mixed fermentation beers, made with local grain, hops, and fruit. 

A 7.2% ABV (alcohol by volume) isn’t just a collaboration, it’s also a celebration of the street where Fremont Brewing Company’s Urban Beer Garden, original brewery, and Floodland’s fermentation and aging facility call home.

- Kihyun as a boyfriend is truly an interesting sight, on the one hand he can be a person with a lot of qualities that are traditionally associated with being feminine, but on the other he has the need to feel very masculine and dominant.

- Now don’t get me wrong! He is not the stereotypical macho, trying to assert his dominance over you, or trying to white-knight his way into your heart. He is the type of person who enjoys their partner leaning on them for support! He simply likes the feeling of being needed by his partner.

- He is the type of boyfriend to support the heck out of you whatever it is that you’re doing! You need help with an assignment? He is there to brainstorm ideas with you. You need to spend time revising for an exam? He will provide you with refreshments, while making sure that you are taking breaks to rest. Are you feeling stressed out from work? Well baby, you’re in luck because Kihyun will rub your shoulders while you spill the tea on your co-workers!

- A typical day starts with you waking up to a good morning message - he wakes up early everyday due to his schedule, and writing something that he knows will put a smile on your face is definitely one of his favourite ways to start the day. Needless to say, receiving sweet messages from your sweetheart first thing in the morning is also one of your favourite ways of starting the day.

- However, what the two of you find even better is being able to spend the day together! Our early bird, Kihyun is the type who’d want you to be able to wake up to the smell of freshly brewed coffee and food sizzling loudly on the pan. But, if you happened to wake up before him, and give him this treatment, our baby would feel so grateful, and most of all, so spoilt (which he 100% deserves!)

- Kihyun is nothing, but a gentleman, so expect the first dates to be more traditional. He’d love to woo you with a cinema and dinner date - what a timeless classic! Meeting up at 6pm, seeing him holding a bouquet of blood red roses; Watching some rom-com, stealing some cheeky kisses in the back seats of a dark lit cinema, then holding the most compelling conversations whilst sharing a bottle of wine or bubbly over dinner in the most private corner of the restaurant. He’d love to then walk you home, offer his jacket to you, and perhaps indulge in a more passionate kiss at the door of your apartment.

- Not all the dates are like this though - the two of you would share a love of just being next to each other - a simple meeting even at 10pm on a park bench, near the big oak tree, which was unofficially claimed by you two as your spot. Often at times where you couldn’t spend time together due to your hectic lives, you’d receive a message saying ‘Our spot in 10?’ and you’d run out of the house, not caring whether you were just wearing a hoodie and leggings with no makeup, because he would be also dressed comfortably in jeans and a hoodie, with some kind of headwear and a face mask to cover his face.

- Those kinds of dates would be filled with talk about the present, the future, your worries and insecurities - somewhere you need to go to be able to talk with a clear head. This is why this spot would also be used for post-argument talk. Not that there are many arguments in your relationship, however, arguments in any relationship are inevitable no matter how small or big. An hour or two after your argument, when you’d both had enough time to cool down, you’d meet at the bench, talk it over and apologise to each other with the sweetest of hugs. Then get a large portion of fries to share, and walk to his dorm to hang out there.

- The first time he’d ever take you to the dorms, he’d do it nonchalantly. He wouldn’t even necessarily tell his members that his partner would be coming over, but that he needs the house clean for guests. He’d show you around the dorm, and if you did manage to bump into other members, he’d introduce you, but then take you to his room, which is already full of snacks he prepared for the two of you earlier.

- Overall, Kihyun is a great, loving boyfriend - he’d do anything for you, stick up for you, even if you’re in the wrong, so please give his all the love you can!!!

House. Stroll off the moments across the historic Inner Harbor, and hop in an hour-long tour, by boat, of what has been deemed among the most underrated cities in the U.S. Catch a show at the gorgeous, refurbished Hippodrome Theatre. Allot three hours to the Baltimore Museum of Art, and get lost in Lexington Market, that will be like the Pike Place Market of Baltimore--if Pike Place was open since 1782, that's.

Portland, Maine

The Way to invest your time: Take the ferry to Peaks Island. Eat your weight in lobster rolls at Portland Lobster Company, and make sure to also hit Central Provisions, The Honey Paw, and Eventide Oyster Co., the"oyster bar of your dreams." (More than a dozen local craft breweries including Allagash and Rising Tide supply the drink; if you're sick of beer, attempt Portland Hunt & Alpine Club.) Walk panoramic Fore Street. Hop on a bicycle for a 6.5-mile flat loop of Portland, which sits on a peninsula, or spend a day" hiking" 70 miles of the increased city through Portland Trails. Push into Portland Head Light, a still-operational light station that has occupied its place five kilometers south of town because of 1791.

Nashville, Tennessee

How to spend your time: Start the day with a cup of house-roasted coffee at Crema. Shop 12 South for a souvenir: a customized pair of jeans from Imogene + willie, maybe, or handcrafted objects from White's Mercantile, a modern twist in an old-time general store curated by Hank Williams's granddaughter Holly.
