Is there any truth to the 1980 October surprise theory?

The New York Times published a story earlier this year where Ben Barnes -- a Republican supporter of Reagan's in 1980 who had once served as Lieutenant Governor of Texas, Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, and protege of former Texas Governor John Connally -- confirmed that the Reagan campaign absolutely encouraged Iran not to release the American embassy hostages before the election because Reagan would give the Iranians a better deal if he was elected President. Barnes admitted that he was present as Connally passed that message around while on a trip to the Middle East in order to get word to the Iranians. It's not exactly a smoking gun because virtually everyone seemingly involved in implementing the October Surprise is dead other than Barnes, but it's a weird thing for Barnes to lie about 45 years later, especially considering how close his relationship was with Governor Connally. Plus, we know that there were shady contacts between people in the Reagan Administration and Iran because of the Iran-Contra scandal.

I think there is definitely some truth to the theory, but I also believe that the Iranians were more than happy to spite President Carter by not releasing the hostages until literally the moment Reagan took the oath of office. The Iranians were still furious with the Carter Administration for letting the Shah come to the United States for medical treatment after he was forced to leave Iran as the Iranian Revolution exploded and Ayatollah Khomeini returned to become Supreme Leader. Carter had also helped broker the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt, which also infuriated Iran and much of the Islamic world. Plus, Carter had ordered Operation Eagle Claw -- the failed attempt to rescue the hostages by force -- and that was seen as an act of war. So, the Ayatollah and leaders of Revolutionary Iran had no love lost for President Carter and weren't interested in doing him any favors before he left office.

The October Surprise that many people overlook is the one which took place in 1968 shortly before the Nixon vs. Humphrey election. When it looked like there might be some progress made in peace talks to bring the Vietnam War to a close, Nixon and his advisers got word to the South Vietnamese to hold off on working toward peace until Nixon was elected and could give them better terms. It was such an egregious act that LBJ actually told people around him that he felt Nixon had committed treason and that he had the blood of American soldiers on his hands for sabotaging peace talks. We even have the tapes of LBJ's phone calls after finding out about Nixon's actions where President Johnson straight-up says, "This is Treason!"

It was Reagan, the Republican president most often cast these days as Trump’s polar opposite, who carried out something close to treason to win an election, before carrying out a host of other crimes and outrages as president. Everything in our scandal-filled times is, sadly, part and parcel of decades of US political tradition.

yay! I drew these quite literally three years ago. dragonheart!milo and raihan! a knight on a doomed dragon hunt being lifted out of his station by a small village medicine man. together they become magic lawyers and overthrow the government

the main details in these do survive into the iterations I’ve drawn (instead of these actual designs I spent time to make el oh el): the “leaf” diamond quilt/gambeson and the plaited coattail for milo, the “atypical” weapons, long coat, and large number of scattered fake gold trims and accessories for raihan. I think I lost raihan the hat and added a cape for milo further down the line because like this their general silhouettes are too similar for my liking lol

Steve knew he wasn’t the smartest. That wasn’t news to him. He knew he was just the brawn, the battering ram, the shield.

It’s fitting, then, that the one who took the most damage would be the one to break first. The first thing someone sees is the first thing they’ll go after.

And, well… Steve spent a lot of time ensuring he was first.

All that didn’t help, of course, as he felt like he was being tracked in his own house, a predator stalking him through the vents, walls, windows.

He didn’t hear the back door open, but felt the shift in air pressure. “Make it quick,” he murmured, begged, shutting his eyes and bracing.

He opened them again when he heard a chuckle. He whirled around and gasped. “Eddie?”

“Pretty thing,” Eddie hummed, cocking his head. “Eddie’s not here.”

“Then who are you?”

He cocked his head the other way. “I am Kas,” he said. “Servant to Vecna, ruler of his armies.”

“Why are you here?”

Kas chuckled. “To destroy you, of course. You and all your friends. Suck your blood from your veins and your marrow from your bones until you are naught more than the dust from which you were wrought.”

Steve made a face. “A little wordy.”

Kas shifted, and suddenly in his place stood Eddie, pouting. “I thought it was good.”

“It is good,” Steve promised. “But this isn’t one of your campaigns, babe, this is Halloween.” Eddie rolled his eyes, and Steve shivered. “And go take out those contacts, they’re giving me the creeps.”

“Oh thank God,” Eddie said, “they’re itchy as hell,” and ran down the hall to the bathroom.

When he walked back out, Steve was in the kitchen, making them lunch. “Y’know we’re gonna have to get El in on this before she blasts you against the wall first and asks questions second.”

“Way ahead of ya, babe,” Eddie chuckled, wrapping his arms around Steve’s waist, nuzzling at his neck. “She and Hop are both already in on it.”

“Do you think the kids are gonna hate us?”

Eddie hummed. “It’s possible. I’m calling it payback for all the times the little shits got into trouble and needed us to bail them out.”

Steve chuckled. “Good reason.” He flinched as Eddie scraped his teeth against his neck. “Christ, Eds,” he muttered. “You a real vampire now or what?”

Eddie chuckled darkly, flicked out the fake teeth with his tongue, and sealed his lips against Steve’s neck. He finally pulled back to murmur, “I wanna suck somethin’, baby, but it’s not your blood.”

“You’re an animal,” Steve replied, maneuvering himself around in Eddie’s arms to face him before pulling him closer in a fierce kiss.

He bit at Eddie’s lip before soothing it with his tongue, reaching behind himself to turn the stove off.

“Bedroom?” He asked, pulling back.

“Bedroom.”

something something about how steph's first impulse is to see love in relation to material things, so when the lords in black ask for what she cherishes most she offers up her phone. and then after the summoning when pete knows that she has to sacrifice him, she refuses and tells him to give up what he wants: "your pokémon cards or your comic collection or whatever it is you're into" and she says this thinking that pete doesn't feel the same way but also because once again she sees love/wants/desires intended toward material items instead of actual people.
