My Very Correct Tales From The Gas Station Queer Headcanons

Disclaimer: You are 100% allowed to disagree with me on all of these, the title is a joke. I am not an authority on any of these characters and these are just my personal headcanons. Unless you’re an asshole about it, in which case I know better than you (I’m kidding).

I have Thoughts™ on a lot of characters but I’m just going to do my six faves, the ones I care about the most.

Jack Townsend - Jack is a bigender/non-binary trans man who uses he/they pronouns <3 He is also a biromantic asexual with a slight preference for women/female-aligned non-binary folks. (Yes I projected pretty much my entire identity onto Jack, he’s my blorbo and I can do that)

Jerry Pascal - Jerry is non-binary in the sense that he responds to any pronouns people use for him and doesn’t really vibe with gender as a concept except in a “haha yeah” kind of way. In terms of his orientation, Jerry changes his answer every time you ask him. He probably actually identifies as queer.

Rosa Vasquez - Rosa is also a biromantic asexual!!!! And she is a trans woman as well <3 She has a slight preference for men/male-aligned non-binary folks in terms of attraction.

Spencer Middleton - Spencer is a gay/achillean aroace non-binary guy!!! He uses he/they pronouns, but his approach to gender is kind of just “ehhhh no.” Most people default to he/him for Spencer and he kinda just accepts it.

Amelia O’Brien - Amelia is also non-binary, but she defaults to she/her pronouns most of the time. She’s also a demiromantic lesbian!!!

Antonio / Carlos - Antonio is a gray-aro gay guy! I originally had it planned that he would be the only cis guy, but after further thought I’m REALLY attached to the idea of him being non-binary and I want to write something exploring that.

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? Watching the dynamic between bonny and read vs stede and ed in s2 ep4 was such a rollercoaster cause it went from me thinking "oh no they're just like stede and ed but if they actually ran off to China together and had a loving happy relationship" to me getting further into the ep and thinking "oh no they're just like stede and ed but if they ran off to China together and their relationship turned fucked up and toxic cause that's what happens when two traumatized pirates run of to live in isolation with eachother on a whim".

Midnight ticks over while they’re on a call. A girl at a house party in West Hollywood stuck her head through the bars of the third floor balcony railing and couldn’t get back through. She’s calmed down from the hysterics dispatch reported by the time the engine rolls up; when Buck meets her on the balcony, saw in hand, she’s mostly just embarrassed.

“Hey,” he smiles, trying to sound as non-judgemental as possible. “Julia, right? I’m Buck. We’re gonna get you out of there in just a second.”

Steph crouches down on Julia’s other side, setting her med bag and blanket on the tiled floor. “How you doing there? Anything hurt?”

“Just my pride,” Julia sighs. “Do you think you could—drop me home, after? My lift’s being a total douchebag.” Buck looks over his shoulder at the party still going on inside; a couple of guys are laughing, leaning into one another, their bodies angled toward the small balcony.

“We don’t really—” Steph starts to say, thumbing the radio with her free hand and meeting Buck’s eyes over Julia’s head. He lifts his shoulder in a half-shrug. “But, uh, sure? We don’t have another call to get to.”

“Guys.” Hen’s voice crackles, exasperated over the radio. Buck starts up the saw instead of answering.

Steph covers Julia’s head with the blanket while the saw makes short work of the balcony. “Dude.” One of the guys who’d been laughing inside is staring at the scene, dumbfounded. The beer in is hand is tipped enough it’s dripping onto the tile. “You’re gonna, like, pay for that, right?”

“Fuck off, Dustin,” Julia mutters, as Steph ushers her out the door.

“Uh, yeah.” Buck hands the guy the piece of railing in his hand. “What she said.”

Hen is waiting for them out on the street, arms crossed over her chest and eyebrows raised so high Buck’s surprised she’s not giving herself a headache. Or maybe she is, and she just likes telling Buck off too much to care.

 “Sorry, Cap,” he says. “It was my call. I can take her in the ambulance, meet you guys back at the station?”

“Oh.” Julia sniffs. “It’s, um, no trouble. I can call an Uber…”

“Don’t be silly.” Hen unfolds her arms. “Surge pricing is crazy right now. Where’s home?” Julia mumbles out an address. “It’s on our way. Come on.”

Steph breaks off with t9he probie for the ambulance; Buck helps Julia up into the engine and climbs in after her. They’re halfway to her house when Ravi makes a surprised little sound. “What’s the time?”

“Twelve twenty-eight,” Hen answers from the front. There’s a smile in her voice when she says, “oh. Happy birthday, Buck.”

i dont have any trigun mutuals so i'm just gonna ramble my thoughts into the infinite void of tumblr. and im sure others have touched on this same topic but

it almost seems like vash is getting softer with every new installment of trigun? like incredibly consistently and incredibly specifically.

let me explain.

i'll start with tristamp and work backwards; the tristamp vash we all know and love there is incredibly adverse to violence.

more often than not he ACTIVELY refuses to fight and just WON'T draw his gun. this post loosely counted the amount of bullets that he shot throughout all of season 1, and almost ALL of them (like to an insane degree) were dished out against knives, who vash knew was strong enough to take the hit.

the few times vash does draw his gun against a human in tristamp, it's as a blunt force weapon (against the badlads gang and livio, for example) or to disarm others/save someone with ricochet (like shooting the punisher before wolfwood can kill livio).

he just doesn't shoot people. at ALL.

then if we look at 98 trigun, things change drastically.

here, vash isn't afraid to hurt people a little if it means more will be saved in the end. of course he never kills, but he actually shoots people here. not only that...

he holds a casual, sarcastic conversation while pointing his weapon at people.

he constantly shoots at limbs to immobilize people, fires warning shots extremely close to peoples' vitals, and performs several very insane trick shots throughout the show to wound those with armor.

tristamp vash wouldn't even draw, but 98 struts around firing warning shots into the sky and singing about bloodshed for intimidation! i'm not sure there's a single episode where he doesn't shoot someone at least once.

...so what about trimax, then?

(PLOT SPOILERS AHEAD)

he is so. shockingly. violent.

of course he never kills. of course he's still trying to save people, but there's this anger in him that i was completely taken off-guard by reading for the first time.

tristamp vash is so soft he's painful to watch. 98 vash makes a heartbreaking effort to be as silly and nonthreatening as possible, constantly making himself out to be the fool. but trimax?

he's... literally grief-stricken and out for revenge. explicit revenge. he's angry and he's hurt and he lays his intentions out so clearly. he's making THREATS.

seriously:

hunting legato. HUNTING him.

it's not even a matter of drawing his weapon anymore. he does it constantly, and fires just as much. never to kill, but he doesn't joke around the way 98 vash does. the most he'll offer is a sunny smile to reassure others and nothing more.

i'm not that far into the manga, either. i'm sure there's countless more (and probably better) panels to convey this side of trimax vash, but i suppose it also says something that i've found so many panels depicting this so early on.

but the progression of vash's personality is fascinating regardless.

from a tortured, angry loner desperately trying to cling to his morals for rem's sake

to an equally devastated man who devotes himself so completely to acting the role of the fool

and finally to the sad, chronically depressed shell of a person in tristamp who refuses to so much as draw his weapon.

Thinking about Caleb and how so much of his story ends with him finding meaning in the temporary.

He spent so long chasing a way to bring his parents back, but in the end he had to accept that they were gone. They were temporary. He has his memories of them now, but that’s all. And he has to find peace with that and find a way to remember them fondly, even though they’re gone now, truly and completely.

He and Essek love each other dearly, but there will come a day when he will have lived his life and grown old and Essek will still be Essek. But even so, every moment they spend together is still meaningful. Even if it ends, it means something.

Just. Caleb and loving things even when they won’t last. Maybe because they won’t last.

Ok this has been bothering me all day. I saw a post talking about how Rauru and Sonia did more for Zelda than Rhoam did and… I’m once again going to defend Rhoam, cuz that’s a very unfair thing to say and a horrible comparison to make.

Rauru and Sonia helped Zelda with her time powers and learning about the secret stone. Rhoam didn’t help her with her sealing power. Why? Cuz he has no magic and he clearly wasn’t the one who had it. Her mother was the one who had the power and was the one to teach her. Rhoam had no idea what he was doing, he didn’t understand the magic, and he hoped that if she dedicated her life that it would awaken so that the calamity wouldn’t destroy their home.

Well he should’ve tried to help her anyways right? Well, yes it’s easy to say that, unfortunately Rhoam was put in a very bad position of being king with the looming threat of the APOCALYPSE!!!! I think it’s implied that Rhoam married into the family, since his wife had the sealing power from the blood of the goddess or whatever, and seeing how he’s Hylian, he wasn’t a prince from another kingdom since all other kingdoms in this world have small round ears. For all we know, he was a prince consort who was never raised to be king. We don’t know what he was doing before, but with his wife’s sudden death and the responsibility of protecting his kingdom, he didn’t make the right choices. Which isn’t an excuse, but in his position, it’s an explanation. Rauru and Sonia didn’t have an apocalypse threatening to happen, in fact, they were in an era of peace and the future seemed bright. Of course they had time to hang out with Zelda and have tea parties with her. They seemed to be relaxed and having fun, which makes sense seeing how there didn’t seem to be much of a threat to their kingdom, minus Ganondorf, but I don’t think either of them saw him as a huge threat, seeing how they were absolutely blindsided by him.

It’s implied in AOC that Rhoam shouldered all of the responsibilities of the kingdom, and it seemed that he was under a significant amount of pressure during the calamity. And I feel like he mostly did that so Zelda could focus on awakening her power. She didn’t seem to have many responsibilities as princess save for awakening her power and helping out the champions. She is barely 17 so it makes sense that she’s not ruling the kingdom, but I do feel like Rhoam did all that stuff so she could focus on the calamity itself. And I’m sure in his stress he grew frustrated whenever Zelda focused more on the machines than awakening her power. Which was not the right thing to do, but come ON the world is literally about to end and the ONLY piece of the puzzle they need is Zelda!!! Some people forget that she HAD to awaken her powers otherwise the world was going to be destroyed! And it almost was cuz they were awakened too late! They were in such an unfair situation! And it’s not fair to compare him to Rauru and Sonia who were not in the same situation he was in, who were lying around in the grass and drinking tea because the calamity wasn’t there.

Rhoam is such a well written character that acts the way you’d expect someone in his situation to act. And he has so much regret over some of the things he’s had to do to protect Hyrule. You can read it in his journal where he finally gives up and desires to act more like a father to Zelda, you can see it when he takes Terrako away from Zelda, and you can see it when he’s a ghost 100 years after everything is destroyed. He’s so guilty but he did what he thought was best so that Zelda could not have a throne to nothing, so that Hyrule will be safe. And there’s a lot of things he could’ve done better, but people don’t act rational under that much stress. Like come on, would you? Don’t lie you absolutely wouldn’t.

And this post isn’t meant to diss on Rauru and Sonia, I like them in their own ways. But it’s kinda dumb whenever people love complex characters and then turn around and hate on characters like Rhoam and make them completely one-dimensional when they’re not. Y’all are completely unfair to Rhoam.
