Warm water rinses the greasy soil of nostalgia from her skin. Her shift over, her muscles sink into the rhythmic movement of the waves lapping at her sides, waiting. Soon she hears the crackle of dry vegetation underfoot as the neighbor boys approach through the stiff reeds and the nightly vigil begins. Theirs is not the lecherous glint of the old cook, her mother's “friend,” seeking to exercise his right as her protector. These are as innocent gazes as one can expect in this day, full of joy and secret marveling. They look inward, following the circuitous route of the waterline on her flesh, seeking the dark crevice through which their mothers bore them. She meets the viewers’ gaze, unashamed, her mind cool as a breeze through the open window. Tomorrow, her bath water will inundate the valley, washing centuries of dust and all living things down to the sea. No ancient odalisque, hung safely on the wall, she is a wolf, Iocasta with filed teeth. The circular, incestual surprises of history hold no sway over her, but spiral down the drain with fried fish fat and the lustful thoughts of little boys. Lote:201 Virgen de Guadalupe con Donantes por Pelagio Antonio de Labastida y Dávalos (Zamora, Michoacán; 21 de marzo de 1816-Yautepec, Morelos; 4 de febrero de 1891), escuela Mexicana del siglo XIX Óleo sobre lienzo de notable interés histórico-artístico para el patrimonio cultural mexicano, medidas: 90 x 72,5 cm. Posible encargo privado devocional realizado y firmado por Don Pelagio Antonio de Labastida y Dávalos en sus tiempos de sacerdote (Zamora, Michoacán; 21 de marzo de 1816-Yautepec, Estado de Morelos; 4 de febrero de 1891) fue un sacerdote, abogado y doctor en cánones. Estudió en el Seminario Conciliar de Morelia, del que más tarde fue profesor y rector. Se ordenó en 1839. Fue prebendado, canónigo y gobernador de la mitra de Morelia y en julio de 1855 se le designó obispo de Puebla. En diciembre siguiente estalló la insurrección de Antonio de Haro y Tamariz, al grito de Religión y Fueros. Derrotada ésta, el gobierno comprobó que los medios financieros fueron sumininstardos por la Mitra poblana y ordenó que los bienes del Obispado de Puebla en esa entidad, en Tlaxcala y en Veracruz, fueran confiscados y vendidos. Labastida se opuso a ello, en consecuencia fue desterrado en 1856. El diario El Heraldo publicó que Labastida dijo durante un sermón: "..con bastante dolor veo que el pueblo cristiano mira con desprecio que se atente contra los bienes eclesiásticos..". El gobierno ordenó su destierro, el general Mariano Morett lo escoltó a Veracruz. El 20 de mayo zarpó con dirección a Roma, haciendo escala en La Habana durante quince días. #Repost @the.art.diary The Marriage of Nicholas II, Tsar of Russia, 26th November 1894 (1895-6) By Laurits Tuxen (1853–1927) The wedding between Nicholas II and Princess Alix of Hesse took place in the Imperial Chapel of the Winter Palace on 26 November 1894, just over twenty years after the marriage of the Tsar's aunt in the same chapel (RCIN 404476). The wedding was announced in April that year and was to take place on the Empress Marie Feodorovna's birthday. Tragically, Emperor Alexander III died of kidney disease on 1 November, and the court was thrown into mourning with the exception of the day of the marriage. The royal couple stand, holding lighted candles, whilst the Metropolitan Archbishop of St Petersburg, Mgr Palladius, makes the sign of the cross before them. Ella, (Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna), writing to her grandmother, Queen Victoria, described her sister's dress as 'embroidered silver cloth Russian court dress & very pretty', helpfully including a sketch. She added that 'Alix being tall will look perfectly lovely'. She wears a kokoshnik tiara and a small diamond crown, beneath which is a wreath of orange blossom, her imperial gold-embroidered mantle is lined with ermine. The Tsar is dressed in the uniform of a Hussar. In the background George I, King of Greece stands to the left of Christian IX, King of Denmark, who looks towards his daughter, the Dowager Empress; the Princess of Wales, and the Queen of Greece.
