Jason ranting about Bruce for the 10th time today: Gosh, he's just the worst.
Roy: Uh huh. Yea. Hey, Ollie? When is Beyoncé's birthday?
Oliver: September 4, 1981, Houston Texas. 10:30 PM. It was on a Saturday. Her nurses' name was Susan.
Roy: When's MY birthday?
Oliver: How the fuck should I know?
Jason:
Roy: Go on.

becoming a fan of non-bat characters really will suddenly make the batfam seem insufferable and render 99% of batfics unreadable😭
"bruce takes in roy and shows him what a REAL father figure is" i think oliver should go tell bruce to shoot himself

Batman: Universe (2020) written by Bendis and illustrated by Nick Derington was one of the most charming and lovely batman comic i have read in a really long time. it's a silly time travel story!!! and only six issues long!
SPOILERS AHEAD, here are some out of context panels that just really amused me;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i really enjoyed how casual batman is with the people in gotham. like yeah, bruce regularly spooks residents when he grapples up the side of their building, and stops for a quick chat. the young new cops aren't exactly sure how to handle batman while others are too used to him to care anymore.
then the whole interaction with green arrow (issue 2) was SO fun! i am so fond of them and they're rarely in enjoyable comics together anymore. i particularly loved this little detail:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
at first bruce calls him oliver, but as the situation becomes increasingly more dangerous, he switches to calling him ollie! i am very normal about this.
Tumblr media
THE BATLANTERN MOMENT. this whole part of the story (issue 3 & 4) was just, very sweet. it was a perfect balance of them being prickly to each other, while also sticking close and working really well.
Tumblr media
this part of the story also features cowboy bruce and hal (sort of)!
...and then bruce was really worried about hal when he lost control and vanished from the past (he's fine), so much so that later in the story when he's dying, he mentions that he hopes green lantern is okay (in the present, hal leaves bruce a voice message to say he is okay, and hopes bruce is safe too).
oh right yeah so bruce dies (for like, a page, thank you confusing time travel mechanics) and THIS IS WHAT HE SAYS TO ALFRED:
Tumblr media
I AM SORRY YOU CAN'T HEAR ME.. TELL YOU.. HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU.. I REALLY DO........ bruce wayne when i get you (issue 4).
Tumblr media
AND THEN!!!! DICK ARRIVES (issue 5)!!!!!! i was hoping we'd get to see damian when bruce returned to the present, or that robin would come along on the time travel shenanigans, but this moment happened and i didn't even mind. it was so lovely. the duo of all time always.
Tumblr media
a lot happens after this moment (issue 6), but these little panels really spoke to me. look at him. sitting criss cross apple sauce in the face of absolute doom. the pastel coloured eternal hell was also very funny to me, as was bruce then literally jumping between different periods of time during the final fight — but i have run out of space to share those. you need to go look at them for yourself.
so idk, READ IT !!!!!!

thinking about the fact that the first villain of Green Arrow vol. 3 pretends to be a gay man to gain Ollie’s trust because Ollie would never suspect a gay person could be evil.and it fucking worked.

so I've just read the infamous green arrow issue that convinced the fandom that Ollie and Roy hate each other and that Ollie is a bad parent... and like that's not how it reads at all? like obviously Ollie was really shitty to Roy in these issues but like it's very clear throughout it that they have a strong bond and I'd say they very much make it clear that they'll make it past this? people need to start actually reading the comics they're referencing istg

It's interesting that Ollie does most of the things Jason thinks Bruce doesn't do.
>Killing criminals, specifically avenging someone
As absolutely shit as Cry for Justice was, the fact that Ollie killed Prometheus for maiming Roy and killing Lian was absolutely in-character and Bruce wouldn't have done that. Bruce was dead at the time, but you bet your ass he would've tried to bring Ollie in after.
>Thinking about the little guy
A core aspect of Ollie's character is his leftism, I mean, his stance on looking out for the little guy. JLU isn't the only time he rejected joining the league because it was too far removed from the streets. He's more likely to protect people who loot supermarkets during a crisis than the owner who tries to shoo them out (This happened in 52). As much as bad writers would like you to think otherwise, Bruce would NOT condone rioting or looting of any kind.
>Looser parenting/Showing affection more.
Look, Ollie was a notoriously bad parent back in the day. But we can say that his hands-off approach did help Roy more than Bruce's my way or the highway type parenting with Jason. Both Roy and Jason had the same issues when they were kids (probably one of the reasons they get along so well, eh?), but at least Roy was allowed to go with the Titans. Being with kids his age probably helped immensely with his growth. And while Batman has trouble admitting he loves his Made Found family*, even too himself, Ollie doesn't have that problem. He tells his kids he loves them all the time and the amount of bear hugs he gives them cannot be counted on 4 hands.
Lest we forget that Bruce's way of ebbing Jason's anger issues was either to ignore it or telling him to his face that taking him in was a mistake.
Also Jason liking Ollie over Bruce is funny, because Bruce would fucking HATE it.
-*I know current writers, Tom the fanfic writer Taylor, like to write Bruce as someone who tells his wards he loves them every single opportunity he gets, but i'm sorry but that's just not him. Bruce is a severely emotionally stunted man and has trouble telling anyone he loves him. One might argue that this Alfred's fault, since he kept his distance emotionally until it was to late. a mistake he recognized and vowed to not make again with Dick, but that's a post for a different day.

2023 reading list: Green Arrow: The Sound of Violence (2023)
"I was just listening to my favorite sound in the whole world." "Which is?" "Y'know. The sound of family."
(ID under the cut.)
ID: Four animated gifs and two still edited panels from Green Arrow (2001).
1: Connor Hawke and Oliver Queen, both in their respective Green Arrow costumes with quivers and bows at the ready, stand in front of the Star City skyline. The city is cast in faint greens and blues.
2: Mia Dearden approaches Oliver on a rooftop, where he sits with his legs hanging over the edge. A narration bubble reads, "I don't know what I'd do if I lost you, kiddo." Mia slowly fades away to reveal empty sky.
3: Oliver, heavily desaturated and cast in shadow, in front of a blue background. About half of his face is visible. White text reads, "If he dies, so do you." The text is repeated at decreasing opacity across the background.
4: Onomatopoeia, a villain with a black mask and a blue design resembling a bullseye, stands in front of a purple sky. He says, "Blam." Then he fires his gun, lighting everything in bright whites and yellows as a sound effect reads "Blam!" to mimic his speech. As his gun smokes and the light fades, he says, "Onomatopoeia."
5: Dinah Lance, dressed as Black Canary, hugs Oliver from behind. The background is faded images of Oliver fighting people. Narration scrolls over the image. "Now I just..." / "...want..." / "Blood." The "Blood" bubble then shifts to be white text on a dark red background.
6: Onomatopoeia, silhouetted in blue, falls from a great height into a replica of his own mask. He slowly disappears into the black.
/End ID.

Just feel like posting this picture of Oliver realising his perception is being fucked with by a mind controller because he should not be able to beat any single member of his family that easily. No other reason to post this, don't think too hard about it.
