"What if I'm the bad luck?"
Tumblr media
The time traveler who has discovered an alien species that feeds on luck finds himself asking a question that a lot of people with trauma ask themselves.
"What if I'm the bad luck?"
But now the Doctor has evidence of this species that bimble along the time stream and change the fates around them for their own benefit, and it adds a layer of legitimacy to the question that I think the world building is beginning to back up.
Not only do we have luck-based time bimbling goblins, but don't we know another alien species that feeds off the energy of a person, who affects the time stream, and who are generally unfortunate to meet?
I'm talking, of course, about the weeping angels.
Tumblr media
So that's two separate alien species who use manipulation of the time stream to generate energy for their own purposes.
And for someone who has faced as much trauma and as many near misses as the Doctor has, it isn't that far a leap to wonder if he might be doing the same.
"Do they cause all accidents?" Ruby asks, and the Doctor doesn't have a solid answer but thinks "Oh, that's possible!"
Tumblr media
"Am I the cause of the misfortune I'm always trying to prevent?" Is the question the Doctor is asking, but I think we can take it one step further. "Am I gaining something from the cosmic coincidence of so many tragic endings?"
I really hope this is something that RTD decides to explore further through the series, either to legitimize the idea or to give the doctor some closure on the trauma he carries with him beyond his time recovering with the Nobles.

saints I’m thinking about your OCs again…pls I want to know about Theo’s tattoos 🥺
Tumblr media
luckily i am literally never not thinking about him ever…. once again @wyorians come look at our beautiful autistic thot son
Tumblr media
thank you for the interest 😭 i never keep the placement consistent, but the tattoos i generally include are:
knuckles are LOVE/SICK, bite mark on side of neck (matching with freddie), the batwings (i put these on barty (!!)) were originally a theo-ism, “the lovers” tarot card, some sort of medieval parrying dagger or sword (knight motif 🥴), assorted hearts, & his girlbestfriend’s initials
he is an artist ^_^ and he drew most of them himself. unpictured he definitely has, like, the eraserhead baby & body horror creatures & a weirdly pornographic junji ito-esque anime girl in a bikini impaling herself on a sword that everyone judges him for. and sensitive softboy leonard cohen lyrics. he contains multitudes.
the important thing to understand about theo is that he looks Like That but he is a JAMES POTTER VARIANT in his soul!!! just insanely quiet about it

Taking screencaps of the Unexpected Meng Yao Mention was going to take too long, so here's the scene in full! It encapsulates several changes that the drama makes to the chronology and the character dynamics! NMJ is the active force behind his and MY's separation in CQL; rather than MY incapacitating NMJ and fleeing to escape punishment for the captain's murder, NMJ straight-up exiles him with no trickery from MY involved whatsoever. While NMJ is upset about this, it was his choice/moral obligation, so he doesn't appear to bear MY any ill will over it.
Given that lack of ill will, it makes sense for him to inquire how MY is getting on with the Jin clan even at this juncture... EXCEPT! Except. He didn't send MY to the Jin with a nice recommendation letter here. He fired him and sent him packing with an actively bleeding stab wound! Drama NMJ really thought--or really told himself--that not only would an injured MY make it to Lanling in the first place, but that the man who personally kicked him down the stairs for existing would hire him even after he was banished from another sect. He really wants him to be alive and thriving!
JZX's bewildered reaction to his questions drives home just how ridiculous that prospect is, and you can see NMJ go through it. No, his father was never going to accept him; even his awkward half-brother who doesn't even know him can tell you that. Yeah, stab wounds kill people, like JC pointed out on the day of the exile! Drama NMJ is confronting the fact that MY might in fact be dead, and this hurts him.
Once JZX exits, the scene cuts to JC sadly holding Suibian as he and JYL cry about missing WWX. That transition seems deliberate!
And then in the scene after that opens with WLJ, frightened of the WWX in her nightmares, overhearing WC complain:

I sometimes like to fantasize about how much Corlys Velaryon would have fucked shit up if Alicent had actually managed to injure Luke in 1x07.
That man had a fleet, access to two full grown dragons with battle experience, money to burn and a pre-existing grudge against Viserys and the Hightowers. He wanted that smoke since the Great Council. And he clearly loved Luke.
It would have gotten very messy, very quickly.

been thinking about the adult timeline, oot zelda went from being this pampered 9- or 10-year-old crown princess with servants and maids and a full royal guard and a giant house and so much food and clothing and safety and anything she could ever want, and suddenly this whole-ass child wakes up one night from a prophetic dream, her father doesn't listen, and suddenly she goes from having everything to nothing, her father's probably dead, the castle is no longer home, her one hope disappears, she and her one bodyguard hide away with the threat of being discovered around every corner, and everything has turned into her worst nightmare overnight.
And now she has to scrounge and steal and barter for food instead of having it handed to her, she has to dress herself with whatever they have on hand instead of having a maid do it, she has to sleep on rocks and in grass with nothing but her bodyguard's arms around her in some semblance of safety. She looks at everyone else doing the same and knows that it's her fault. She looks at impa trying to keep her safe, suddenly forcing her into Sheikah training for days on end and making her work herself to the bone for the first time since she was born, and she complains because she's a royal kid, but she knows that impa's training is going to keep her alive in this new hell she's created for herself.
She becomes Sheik, becomes him wholly and completely because he is quick and silent and smarter than she could ever be, and he won't make stupid mistakes and get his subjects killed because of it, and he is tough and unimportant and dedicated and, incredibly, more comfortable than Zelda ever had been. Sheik can stay alive and fight from the shadows and train for hours on end without dropping from exhaustion. He can survive and fix childish mistakes and help his subjects, though they will never know it's him. and then impa has to leave him for one of her many, many reconnaissance trips, but for once, neither of them are scared to leave the other because he won't get himself killed at the first sign of trouble. And she doesn't come back, but he doesn't fret, because she can take care of herself and he can trust her.
And he still worries, just a little bit.
And then he's seventeen, and it's been so long, but he scouts out castletown one more time, hiding from all of Ganon's eyes like second nature, when a flash of light catches his eye from the Temple of Time. So he sneaks over to the stained-glass window that looked down upon the Master Sword. But the Master Sword isn't in its pedestal: it's being held by a gangly teenager with a green tunic, a fairy, and a blue ocarina at his belt.
And maybe Sheik realizes he finally has a real chance to fix his mistake.
ANYway I'm just saying that child timeline Sheik probably had an easier learning curve for his ninja-assassin training

Not sure I care enough to engage with the post, but to read SVSSS + extras and come away with the interpretation that SJ doesn't care about why YQY failed to save him, just that he did fail, and therefore would never forgive him or change his behavior towards him if he learned the truth, feels off-place to me. It seems to lean into the view that SJ doesn't actually care about YQY, just sees him as a useful tool, and thus couldn't be hurt by the supposed abandonment - with that interpretation it would then make sense to think he would neither care nor change his behavior (towards YQY) upon learning what actually happened.
#generously put - I suppose it's not an interpretation that the text of svsss completely forbids#but I don't see it as the most probable interpretation by a long shot and it doesn't explain their interactions or themes well at all#given that Shen Jiu eventually canonically forgives YQY even without an explanation I don't see why he wouldn't if one was earnestly given#I could see SJ continuing to throw some lingering degree of fit if he learned that YQY had indeed tried but failed#(and YQY honestly doesn't need to elaborate on the whole trauma only the important part - that he set out too late)#but I really don't think their relationship would have been anything like how it turned out in canon#no real comment on how SJ's actions would change on ~everything else~ since it's so counterfactual after that point and we know he's a git#I do honestly feel that the novel bolsters this idea with the whole thing at Maigu Ridge#where SY learns of YQY's tragedy and immediately sees what he has to do to avert the same with LBH#he saw how important it was to explicitly let LBH know how loved he is even if he can't explain everything because it CAN change things#and it does for them#the responsibility part is... well everyone is responsible for their own behavior - including SJ#now I don't have strong opinions on this next part#but regardless of trauma or his right to remain silent - YQY has some responsibility for the ~direct~ consequences of the choice he made#namely referring to SJ's belief that he was callously abandoned and his pain and anger over it#but he is absolutely not responsible for SJ's “everything else”#idk just had some thoughts

i think it'd be so funny for valerie to try decapitating danny only to then realize that it didn't work bc time and again this girl fails to understand that this boy is basically unkillable
so now she's forced to hold the sides of danny's face so that his head can start reattaching itself to his neck and now this is totally not awkward for either of them

One thing I've been thinking about almost constantly since the release of the game is how DH subconsciously dislikes the Masked Fools and his instincts generally tell him who is one even when they're upholding the pretenses that they aren't. His own personal experiences with them until the current point in the game have been atrocious, and frankly speaking he will NEVER trust any of them - but he is willing to work alongside them if need be, and won't stop his friends from doing so either. All a Masked Fool will be able to see from his side is that he doesn't trust them whatsoever and that he is ready to end their lives the second they try to pull a fast one on him or his friends, nothing more nor less than that.
The reason for this? His character stories. It wasn't mentioned outright, but we do know that after leaving the Luofu he eventually found himself on a ship full of masked people who tried to steal his memories and who forced him to listen to mad ramblings as some sort of mental torture. Initially I thought it could be a different group than the Masked Fools, but Sampo basically showed us that it wasn't. How? He nicknamed Dan Heng "cold dragon young" on Belobog, an allusion to DH's vidyadhara roots ('dragon') as well as his recent rebirth ('young'). Now, if this was the first time they'd met (which is possible since DH didn't recognize him), then how could Sampo know about him unless through other Masked Fools, who we learned have a habit of "televising" their ventures to the others at the Tavern? I also took into consideration that maybe a Masked Fool was on the Luofu during DH's banishment walk, but we have to remember it was AFTER he left the Luofu that he changed his appearance into the one we know now, so I wager only the masked people from that ship could've noticed DH is a vidyadhara (possibly even the part about him being DF's reincarnation) during their attempt at stealing his memories.
Besides, although it's a running gag that no one trusts Sampo, no one thus far has come as close to jeopardizing his life as DH did when he thrust his spear in the snow at Sampo on their first meeting. We all know that DH is never one to use violence if it can be avoided (that's a big chunk of his voicelines too), so why would he choose to resort to violence right after meeting Sampo, when he didn't even know his name? Because of his traumatic experiences with the Masked Fools prior to his joining the Express.
