okay so, recently I was replaying a game (won't say the title since this is a minor spoiler!) and at one point a character loses an eye, and there's a section where it shows him struggling to get used to this new lack of depth perception. even though i had an OC of my own who'd lost an eye, I'd never taken something like that into consideration. and then it made me think of your Zuko – and ofc whatever other Zukos have been imagined with a blind eye (which tbh I wish they'd allowed in the show but, oh well) – and how he might have to relearn firebending to some degree in the time after he'd been wounded by Ozai.

I just woke up so I'm not sure if I even had a question lmao but it's been stuck in my head for a little bit but, I also just love fanon Zuko lore that tbh I wish had been canon??

Hello! Partially blind Zuko never ceases to amaze me whenever I see a fanart or read a fic that depicts him like that.

There's a lot to be said about the damage done to him by Ozai, and Agni knows I'm a sucker for visual metaphors. The burn leaving Zuko half blind and deaf works for me as yet another metaphor of his dual nature. A permanent consequence of his father's hand covering his face in an attempt to silence him. To keep him isolated, weak, with only half of himself able to see the world as it is. A Blue Dragon who offers him the chance to close his eyes and rest.

The new lack of depth perception and the Agni Kai flashbacks would have made firebending torture for him. Zuko was already a failure and a coward. What kind of bender is afraid of his own element? What kind of Fire Prince can't stand the sight of a flame?

Healing is a tiring process, and though he may never see or hear as fully as he once did, he now knows fire for what it truly is. Life and destruction—two halves of a whole.

I imagine Aang would be messing around or doing little braids on Zuko’s hair when he’s sleeping. On another note, given the theory about Zuko being partially blind and deaf, would he sleep on his right with people like Aang because he trusts him? Who is the spooner between Zukaang?

Yessss this would be so cute 🥺 After they get together in my AU, I’d like to imagine that Aang does this to help Zuko fall asleep. And then he wakes up with his hair looking crimped when he takes the braids out lol (I used to do this when I was younger).

As for the fan theory, I would say yes, Zuko would totally feel comfortable sleeping with his scarred side exposed around Aang! And I personally think that Zuko is more often than not the little spoon lol

So I love Avatar the last Airbender fics where Zuko is partially blind (and deaf) and while I dont read a ton of atla fics I've noticed something that I haven't seen brought up in said fics.

Partially blind Zuko tends to get described as facing forward and stuff, and (while i understand not doing this every time) as a partially blind person it doesn't make sense to me. Especially when hes supposed to be focusing on something.

Im mostly blind in my right eye so Im always facing a little to the right. But if im focusing on something (like reading/sewing/painting/etc.) my head is turned way more so I can see better. Its not even a conscious thing I'll just be working on something and then suddenly realize how much my head is turned.

And I would assume a partially blind/deaf Zuko would do it even more if hes partially deaf.

Even if he tries to look straight ahead for some reason to maybe hide the disability a bit or something, hed still probably turn his head without realizing.

Anyway not a big deal or anything and I'm not against anyone who leaves it out since most people dont think about it too much, but its just something I noticed.

Thanks for the ask!

I’m going to assume you mean Avatar but if I’m wrong correct me.

1. Katara and Sokka live with their grandma because their dad and Bato are off fighting in the Navy. Katara is in high school looking to do something in human rights and Sokka is also in high school and wants to become an engineer. Sokka met Suki, who lives with her two dads, his freshman year and the two started dating a few months later.

2. Aang is still twelve but he's also in high school. Gyatso would be his foster dad and Appa and Momo (a dog and a ferret(?)) are their pets. He's still bald but instead of having an arrow on his head it's now on his yellow and orange jacket.

3. Toph's parents think that the school they all go to is a private school that helps her because of her blindness. She's been able to keep that lie going for three years now. Katara helps her with any questions that she has and she's already declared that Sokka will be her chauffeur when he gets his license.

4. Ozai lost custody of Zuko and Azula when Zuko ended up in the hospital with third degree burns. They both live with Iroh who sends them to school and takes care of them in the apartment above his tea shop. Zuko, due to being partially blind and deaf, is in a few classes with Toph who introduced him to everyone else. Azula took longer to meet everyone because of her rivalry with Katara but eventually joined the group.

5. Mai's parents were strongly against sending her to a local high school but she wore them down. They also had to cut back on spending when Tom Tom was born at the same time that Ozai, their business partner, came under investigation for child abuse. Mai and Zuko started dating their sophomore year. Ty Lee's parents never cared where she went and Ty Lee liked going to the school because her sisters didn't go there. She does gymnastics for the school and has won three gold metals for her work. She also loves to freak out teachers and students by twisting her body into different shapes. She and Mai join the group shortly before Azula does.

i headcanon that zuko's got bad tinnitus in his left ear, as opposed to the usual headcanon of partially deaf. the tinnitus has good days and bad days, and sometimes makes it almost functionally impossible to hear on his left side, but it comes with the added benefit of tinnitus headaches, insomnia, and general irritation on bad days :) cuz i cant let the poor boy be happy lmao

what’s in the gaang’s youtube history 📺

aang likes videos of people doing impressive skateboard tricks, video game speedruns, heartwarming videos titled smth like "WATCH THIS TO HAVE YOUR FAITH IN HUMANITY RESTORED", unlikely animal friends, cats being silly, puppies running around, comedy sketches with high production value, and whatever else 12 year old boys watch on youtube (lego??? minecraft??? pokemon??? i .... don't actually know)

katara is addicted to youtube almost as much as she is addicted to twitter. she watches so many longass videos on social/political issues and then tweets the creators about how one hour and forty three minutes into the video they stated an opinion that she personally disagreed with, and she demands an apology. she also loves elaborate makeup tutorials that she would never even bother to attempt to replicate (but she likes to think that maybe one day if she gets invited to the met gala, she now has some looks to choose from)

sokka's youtube library is extremely eclectic. he can't stop clicking on videos titled shit like "intro to particle physics" just to watch the entire thing and be like "why did i watch this i knew all that already." but yknow. he just had to make sure. he's a big fan of chris fleming, and he's made all his friends watch "gigi the christmas snake" multiple times. he's gone down a lot of rabbitholes in his day, but his personal favorite side of youtube is the videos of chemical reactions, especially the ones that end in an explosion.

toph occasionally enjoys listening to longass video essays about obscure topics, but mostly she just listens to podcasts. she’s also partial to this one video that’s just the sound of a chainsaw revving on a 10 hour loop, and she plays it at just the right volume that her parents will be like “what’s that awful noise?” to which she innocently responds “i don’t hear anything” and they’re like “oh no you must be able to hear it, it’s so annoying” and toph’s like “are you sure? it sounds normal to me.” she tries this on katara once, but katara gets so frustrated that she just yells “oh wow didn’t realize you were blind AND deaf” and that leads them to get in a very violent brawl in which toph’s nose is nearly broken, so she decides to limit this particular gambit to the company of her parents only. 

zuko exclusively uses youtube to watch cute animal videos. otherwise, he's terrified he'll accidentally click on something that might potentially radicalize him, since he read somewhere that the algorithm was designed to do that, or worse, direct him to one of those content farm generated animations of elsa getting a c section, which is apparently also a concern. frankly, the internet scares him, and he tries to avoid it as much as possible.

suki watches npr tiny desks, kexp live, lofi hip hop anime beats to relax/study to, and best of vine compilations. anything on youtube that isn't music or shortform comedy simply does not interest her.

to boost her platform, ty lee decides to go on a reality show. she pretends to be a vapid airhead, but is actually very subtly manipulating not only the other contestants, but also the crew. she walks away from the whole experience with double the number of instagram followers (she already had a sizable amount) and a huge bag. anyway, azula goes through a phase of obsessively watching a lot of clips from. that

mai is indebted to the guy who reuploaded all the “patti reviews exotic animals” videos after they got taken down from the original channel. her favorite youtube video of all time though is nathan fielder thin watermelon. she rewatches it at least once a week

ty lee’s youtube history is just meditation playlists and also the goriest true crime stories she can find #justgirlythings <3

yue loves the artful simplicity of those animated tedx videos. they’ve led her down a lot of really interesting research rabbitholes. she promised katara she’d stop sending them to sokka though after he spent the next month telling her about nothing but eel mating habits and lesser known facts about genghis khan

iroh only uses youtube to watch recordings of tea ceremonies and isn’t even aware that there are other types of videos on the platform. ignorance is truly bliss
