no you guys don’t get it; it’s so bad on tiktok. everyone on there is so insistent that foxface purposefully killed herself with the berries solely based off the two second clip in the movie (which wasn’t even identifying edible plants it was literally just matching).
like…… the whole point with foxface from the beginning was not to overestimate your competitors. when she talks about cato and foxface in the same passage she explicitly states that it’s just as dangerous to overestimate who you’re facing. in that she was thinking about how she might be overestimating cato’s intelligence, but then foxface goes and does the same with peeta. katniss constantly talked about how smart she was. she had made it to the final four solely off of taking from others just to keep herself alive. she had been doing it the entire games, but she trusted that peeta knew the berries he was grabbing. she probably didn’t even check to see what they looked like, because let’s be real. district five’s industry was ELECTRICITY. do you really think someone from the power district knows anything about edible plants? she saw the berries with the cheese and took some to fuel herself. because she assumed katniss and peeta were literally about to eat them. why on earth would she kill herself when she was three people away from winning? and if she knew they were poisonous and assumed katniss and peeta were about to eat them, she would’ve been final two. she could’ve waited for them to eat the berries, take katniss’s bow and arrows, and she would’ve had at least a fighting chance against cato. not to mention all the other districts HATE THE CAREERS. if she knew they were poisonous, decided to kill herself, and assumed katniss and peeta were going to eat them, that would’ve left cato as victor. there was no one else. she did not know they were poisonous. she overestimated peeta’s intelligence. it’s saying being stupid is dangerous for everyone.

i think that you can(and should) enjoy hoffman as a character and also acknowledge that he is an inherently horrible person who has done very bad things. those two things can coexist btw

guys i don’t wanna sound rude but… even if byler is not canon and will is accepted for his sexuality by his friends/mike wouldn’t it be awesome? it’s not a bad ending even with mvlv canon. they showed us that will is in love with mike from season 1 but they never showed mike interested for will in “that way”. i don’t think byler is gonna happen also cause in 8 episodes they don’t have time for that.
I used to feel this way. I thought I would be happy with him being given another love interest and Mike finding out about his sexuality and them staying the bestest of friends. It made sense to me and I was waiting for that to happen.
But then they released S4 and made him so utterly in love with Mike and made Mike behave in a way that doesn't make much sense unless he's questioning and made Mileven have issues that were unnecessary if they wanted to go Mileven endgame, and they concentrated so much on it, that it would be absolutely cruel if they just swept it all under the rug.
My major issue is the van scene. I could still accept that ending if it wasn't for the van scene. The way they had Will lie about his feelings and sacrifice them to further Mileven is a plot point that needs to be resolved, because he lied about his painting and that pushed Mike towards his confession. Narratively, that's an open thread that needs to be closed, and by the way they framed the whole thing, if they went Mileven endgame, they wouldn't subvert that plotpoint at all, they would just reaffirm it.
And that would be really fucked up. Not to mention it would make Will's character arc unnecessary? He could have had issues with his sexuality without it being about Mike, or at least without him being IN LOVE with Mike. But he is. They highlighted it so much too.
Why?
It's either they decided to be cruel just for the sake of it or they wanted to have Byler be a thing from the start.
This said, I think there IS enough time to make Byler happen if they want to. They only need a few scenes, really, and since the focus is going to be very much on Will and his feelings for Mike next season (since they are apparently connected to the supernatural storyline), I'm sure it's not going to be a sub-plot like it's been so far, but we are going to have the whole issue right in our faces for the whole time.
Plus, they did show Mike being interested in Will. He was as interested in Will as Will was in him, in fact, except we didn't have the further proof of him being called queer by other people to back that up. But he has always loved Will. They spent 4 seasons making it clear that his friendship with Will it's unlike any other friendship he has and in S4 they insinuated in the gen public mind that there's something going on in his mind that makes him behave weirdly towards Will and El, which is the only reason why I started shipping Byler in the first place. It recontextualized Mike as a character completely.
I was on board with Mike being straight and Mileven endgame and Will finding someone else up to S3. S4 completely changed the show and considering the emphasis they put on it all, it was clearly very intentional.

It’s incredible how Tumblr users are collaboratively making an entire fake movie with little to no issue and dutifully trying to make sure everyone is in on the joke/understands it
Meanwhile Twitter users are at each other’s throats with “Bojack Horseman is shallow depression fuel and everyone who likes it is beneath me” discourse

I’m so glad everyone is having the same visceral reaction to episode 4 like I did. I thought I was being too sensitive but fucking no. It is painful. It is horrid. Knowing that this type of abuse actively happens to sex workers and those who are trafficked. It’s jarring because I didn’t expect to see this dark and explicit depiction in a cartoon that jokes about penises every 2 minutes. It’s like when light hearted coco melon shows start talking about death, it was just unexpected because I never took this show serious. I’m going to share more of my thoughts below! Trigger Warning: Mentions of SA ⚠️
I don’t think it’s my place to deny or confirm if the ‘poison’ scenes were fetishized, I personally believe it’s subjective. I know how I feel but I think no matter where you stand, you are right in your own way. Many things can be true at once. What we can all agree on, is that it was harsh. In a way, I hope the audience is able to understand how exploiting and non glamorous sex work is. There is nothing fun about having your body used multiple times a day by people you do not know and having said scenes recorded then plastered all over the media. Of course all forms of engaging in or creating adult content are different, I am specifically talking about sex workers who have no say or control over their bodies and finances. Like Angel. Let us put emphasis on WORK in sex work.
It is demanding. It is laborious It is scaring. Remember that and remember the unheard voices who must do this to simply survive.
There is a lot of criticism about angel’s personality and yes I agree it is annoying but you have to understand, it is a trauma response. Hypersexuality is a common trait among those who are sexually abused. Angel just outwardly expresses it all the time because it is all he knows. This thought process is the only way to tolerate his behavior. I say thought process because it is only an interpretation. It’s very obvious viv just adores writing sexed up characters with zero nuance or depth but let’s just pretend she can actually write male characters that think beyond their cock and balls. Let’s pretend that Angel Dust is a two dimensional character and not (grits teeth) fetish bait.
Now, let’s talk about Charlie. Alright great, she saw her friend being mistreated and was about to stand up to his abuser, ok good good. The victim (Angel) gets upset and wants her to leave because he was beaten. Yes, average response of someone who is an abusive relationship, he is afraid and wants to avoid more conflict between him and Val. The situation at hand couldn’t be more than obvious. How does Charlie respond? She cries. And not because she is frustratedly concerned for the safety of her friend. It is because he yelled and rejected all her poor attempts at helping. Charlie is weak as shit and I think that interaction was weirdly written. I wish she had the mental fortitude to understand how much danger Angel’s life was in at that moment. I cannot enjoy her ‘aggressive kindness’ cutie do no wrong baby girl type of character in a moment like that.
And I feel the same about Husk’s song. Out of all the responses you could’ve made, this is what made it to the final cut? Do better. I don’t care if I lack the mEdIa LiTeRaCy twitter keeps yapping about. It’s bad. You just showed a sexual assault montage and the rebuttal was basically “my uncle broke his neck tap dancing once :/“ lol we’re both losers and that’s ok, suck it up buttercup, I like you regardless. This was the best response to an SA victim? No degree in media literacy would ever help me think that was an acceptable response. I dunno about ya’ll but I major in common sense at the university of using my eyes and fucking ears. Now imagine, if that entire segment, when Husk and Angel are at the bar plus the musical number; imagine if all of that was placed BEFORE we see Angel and Val interact and then poison plays as the final song. It would be 10x more impactful because then the audience sees how deep and stuck Angel actually is. Trauma olympics is never acceptable but neither is trauma participation trophies. It is not right to make Husk’s issues be seen as the same as Angel’s issues. They are not the same and it is ok to acknowledge that Angel has it worst than Husk. It’d be more genuine if Husk were to just hug him in complete silence after dragging him out of the bar and have Angel tearfully embrace him back. The first non sexual and benevolent interaction between them. The first physical act of care with no ulterior motives of lust.
I grind my teeth at the wasted potential.

Completed the Pokemon Teal Mask DLC. Seeing people's reactions to the story characters has reminded me that some folks just have zero reading comprehension or media literacy at all.
Pokemon fans: "We want asshole rivals! We're sick of the ones that are just always your friends and never conflict with you in any way!"
Same fans when they get a character with an arc or who's .000001% flawed: "Wow this is the worst person in the world smh"

HELLUVA BOSS DEVIATING FROM ITS ORIGINAL PREMISE FUNDAMENTALLY DESTROYED THE SHOW
So, it has already been discussed many times in HB critical community that HB deviated from its premise after S1 and that anyone with an once of media literacy can tell that you can't describe it in any way other than horrible writing.
Now, I'm going to ask you this for a second - imagine that you haven't seen S1, the pilot or read the premise of Helluva Boss anywhere. Imagine that you watch all (available) episodes of S2 and are asked to write a premise about it on some movie review website. How would you briefly describe what happens in S2?
Oh, you can't or are having major trouble doing it? Don't worry, you are not media illiterate, my friend. That is the case because IT'S LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO TELL WHAT HELLUVA BOSS IS SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT ANYMORE.
There are many flaws that your writing could possess - inconsistent characterization, too fast/slow pacing and so on. However, they do not automatically derail your work. It is very much possible to recognize those faults, learn from them and do better in the future.
But the premise of your work is its literal BONES. You build up the plot and characters based on it. You just can't expect your show to be good, if you tear out its basis. Of course the pacing, character development and how plot points are wrapped up in HB is horrible - how can anything function without the very thing that holds it all together?
And I MEAN that the premise of HB completely disappears, not shifts or changes. Like, seriously, what the hell is HB supposed to be about now?
Stolitz?
Their interactions indicate zero meaningful development and are tediously spaced out to the point that it's hard to care about their relationship. It is made even worse by the fact that Stolas, just like in S1, still keeps pressuring Blitzo, despite him being clearly uncomfortable.
Blitzo making amends with people he hurt?
Even ignoring S1's nonexistent buildup of this plotline (Blitzo looking at photos on his phone doesn't count, since it's literally the ONLY moment that barely suggests it), there's no buildup in S2 either, when it comes to both Barbie and Fizz. It is certainly not helped by the fact that Barbie just vanishes after Unhappy Campers and Blitzo and Fizz's beef is resolved in a single episode.
Any other plotlines of S2, like Fizz's job, Crimson, Striker, or Stolas and Stella's separation are just too small or insignificant to be considered part of the supposed premise, INCLUDING the assassination business, which arguably takes up the least amount of time of aspects of the show listed.
It's no surprise that Helluva Boss is slowly crumbling. At this point, it's just a paralysed zombie who completely forgot what it once was. And it's damn sad to watch, because the show comforted me during some dark times and, despite Viv being an awful person, I truly hoped for HB to be great.

I'm sincerely worried for the future considering how media literacy and the concept of source verification is absolutely dead with a loud percentage of Gen Z/Gen Alpha kids. There's also absolutely zero critical thinking or willingness to understand the context of anything, which is doubly worrying. I hope it's just a vocal minority and not a trend across most.
It's unserious when it's about racecar things, but unfortunately I keep seeing it with serious topics, so when I come across it more and more with the unserious stuff I use to escape the serious topics... it stops feeling unserious and becomes really concerning. Super duper not fun, too.
A bit of today's nonsense? Once again preferring to listen to a "source" with zero credibility over literally everyone who is an authority and has a say in everything. Not only that, but to believe the "source" over the well-understood fact that the team's sponsors came on because of who was in the car more than to sponsor the team itself. Etc, etc, etc. Of course I'm talking about girlypops who get their giggles clinging to any "proof" that DR is getting fired.
The absolute unwillingness to see through their biases to at least form sensible or factual backups for their hate of things (not just DR) is embarrassing, frankly. There are so many uneducated fans who use wrong/not credible/misconstrued information to prop up their "arguments," and even when it's an argument I or someone agrees with, they cling to being wrong and attack the people who showed them facts instead of stepping back and reevaluating. They openly refuse to understand how things work, they'd rather spew hate at others (like Alex Albon, for example) than take a breather, learn, and be upset but still remain decent people. They claim to have the highest morals and use that to eviscerate people, but in the same week will unflinchingly prop up someone who is less than a degree separated from a literal fascist because he's a cutie pie.
A few months ago I saw someone say that Gen Z/Gen Alpha are just young Boomers with how they approach media literacy, critical thinking, confirmation bias, and their own hypocrisy and the way they have no regard for the cruelty they show others. I thought it was a horrible thing to say - until I started to realize they might be right. Existing in fandom space has rapidly been supporting that theory.
I'm going to Austin this year. Friendship bracelets are already being made. I can't wait to meet so many people and trade and share stories and experience an incredible sporting event with thousands of fans and a blossoming young, not-cishet-male demographic. And sometimes I think about the fact I'll likely be trading bracelets with people who've wished drivers dead/injured, spread horrible lies about them or their loved ones, actively contributed to ripping down drivers' mental health, and countless other awful things and think it's perfectly okay because it in no way affected them personally.
Anyway.

Hello Jay I would like to start by saying thank you for using your time and expertise to answer our questions.
I was curious if you feel as though having very minimal major planeswalker deaths as a result of the MOM storyline diminishes the impact of the story?
The idea that stakes and impact require mass death in stories is a very new phenomena. It’s a result of the cinema sins-ification of media criticism and the growing lack of media literacy. It’s a sort of edgy consequence of the grim dark storytelling of the 2000s as a consequence of the mood at the time in American media.
Good stories are not just a good Wikipedia entries and the hitting the correct beats on a checklist, as much as the online sphere wants an empirical way to evaluate a story.
Edit: In case this isn't clear, that's a no, I don't think so.
Edit Edit: I also have zero interest in arguing or litigating this with anyone, a year later, after this has already been analyzed to death.
Edit Edit Edit: Christ people, I was asked one specific question, do I think the planeswalker death count diminished the impact of the story. Moving goal posts and acting like I said MOM was perfectly executed isn't helping your case. Please don't send me more asks about this, they're going in the bin. We talked about it enough last year.

Oh my gosh, y'all, I was ready to throw hands with someone on the Star Wars Facebook page!! 😡😡 Angry rant ahead! Slight spoilers but not really...
It started off with the guy saying the new episode of Bad Batch was "another filler episode", (which that word makes me SO angry already) so I told him that word is so overused and this wasn't filler. I even broke down the points of each episode that contributed to the plot as well as character development. Then we kept going back and forth about it and he questioned if we watched the same episodes and I'm like "clearly not cuz you obviously missed the point!" and he said "we didn't need 3 episodes in the prison". I told him there were only 2 in the prison: the first and the third because the second was centered on Hunter and Wrecker. Then this asshat had the nerve to say "The second episode was horrible and I tend to block out every episode with Wrecker because he's the worst Star Wars character ever created after Omega"............ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh the absolute RAGE I felt when I saw he said that!! 🤬🤬
I so wanted to say, "well no wonder you're missing the point of the show cuz you're blocking out one of the best characters who's in pretty much every episode of the whole damn show!!!!"
But I was getting so mad that I just blocked him instead. I didn't wanna hear anymore of his wrong opinions. Though I did say before I blocked him "wow...just when I thought your opinion couldn't get any worse...you had to say THAT". Uuuggghhh I was furious! I honestly still am!
Nobody...and I mean NOBODY...talks about my boy, Wrecker, like that!!!!! He is a wonderful, sweet, funny and complex character that has more emotional maturity in his pinky finger than that guy could ever hope to have! He's incredibly kind, intelligent and is in tune with his emotions. He might not know a lot about technology or things like that, but he knows how to disassemble an explosive and makes a pretty good tank! He cares so much about his family and can bring a smile to anyone's face!
Ugh sorry...I got so mad seeing that comment from someone who clearly has no understanding of Wrecker's character and ZERO understanding of The Bad Batch in general. I'm so sick and tired of many people saying it has a bunch of "filler" episodes, which is 100% false! The show would do so much better if more of the freaking SW fandom had better media literacy, but clearly, that ship sailed long ago 🙄
I love this show so much and I will defend it to my last breath against anyone who dares to say it's nothing but "filler" or anyone who dares to insult ANY of my boys or my little blonde angel!!!
