I'm sincerely worried for the future considering how media literacy and the concept of source verification is absolutely dead with a loud percentage of Gen Z/Gen Alpha kids. There's also absolutely zero critical thinking or willingness to understand the context of anything, which is doubly worrying. I hope it's just a vocal minority and not a trend across most.
It's unserious when it's about racecar things, but unfortunately I keep seeing it with serious topics, so when I come across it more and more with the unserious stuff I use to escape the serious topics... it stops feeling unserious and becomes really concerning. Super duper not fun, too.
A bit of today's nonsense? Once again preferring to listen to a "source" with zero credibility over literally everyone who is an authority and has a say in everything. Not only that, but to believe the "source" over the well-understood fact that the team's sponsors came on because of who was in the car more than to sponsor the team itself. Etc, etc, etc. Of course I'm talking about girlypops who get their giggles clinging to any "proof" that DR is getting fired.
The absolute unwillingness to see through their biases to at least form sensible or factual backups for their hate of things (not just DR) is embarrassing, frankly. There are so many uneducated fans who use wrong/not credible/misconstrued information to prop up their "arguments," and even when it's an argument I or someone agrees with, they cling to being wrong and attack the people who showed them facts instead of stepping back and reevaluating. They openly refuse to understand how things work, they'd rather spew hate at others (like Alex Albon, for example) than take a breather, learn, and be upset but still remain decent people. They claim to have the highest morals and use that to eviscerate people, but in the same week will unflinchingly prop up someone who is less than a degree separated from a literal fascist because he's a cutie pie.
A few months ago I saw someone say that Gen Z/Gen Alpha are just young Boomers with how they approach media literacy, critical thinking, confirmation bias, and their own hypocrisy and the way they have no regard for the cruelty they show others. I thought it was a horrible thing to say - until I started to realize they might be right. Existing in fandom space has rapidly been supporting that theory.
I'm going to Austin this year. Friendship bracelets are already being made. I can't wait to meet so many people and trade and share stories and experience an incredible sporting event with thousands of fans and a blossoming young, not-cishet-male demographic. And sometimes I think about the fact I'll likely be trading bracelets with people who've wished drivers dead/injured, spread horrible lies about them or their loved ones, actively contributed to ripping down drivers' mental health, and countless other awful things and think it's perfectly okay because it in no way affected them personally.
Anyway.

Okay, so its been a while since I was interested in a new, booming, fandom. And its been a *long* time since seeing shipping discourse.
So as an older fan, let me give you all a little reminder.
Characters are like barbie dolls, right. Maybe you use them according to cannon and keep their canonical identity for your story... But someone can and will take that same character and tell a story that completely ignores some or all of cannon. And that's okay because they are fictional and not real.
You need to respect a real person's pronouns, sexual identity, etc. Because they are a human being. But fictional chracters? You can make 'em straight, make 'em gay, have them be transgender, and it's fine. Because they are nothing but fictional ideas and not real people.
So, in conclusion: if you don't like something, don't interact with it! Chracters are simply ideas and not actual living beings. They don't give a fuck what you do with them because they don't exsist. How one interacts with a character does not necessarily reflect how they treat people.

What if Michael Distortion just continued to live Michael Shelleys life? Just shows up at the magnus institute to continue his job and neither Gertrude nor Elias/Jonah can get rid of him because technically Michael has a contract as an archival assistant.
Edit: Link to fic :)

(small rant about show alicent)
I’m sorry (I’m not) but i HATE people who are like “oh Alicent should’ve told Rhaenyra, its her fault she didn’t”
Alicent was a 15 year old girl who was pimped out to a man 3x her age by her father. Alicent quite clearly did not want to marry Viserys. Alicent was not stupid, she knew immediately when her father asked her to ‘comfort the king’ what it would probably lead to, but Viserys SPECIFICALLY ASKED HER to not tell rhaenyra. Now maybe im alone in this, but if I was given two options- tell rhaenyra and face unknown consequences by the king who i barely know and my father who is my only parental figure, OR, not tell rhaenyra and hope my closest friend would empathise with me, understand this is not my fault and be there to support me. I would obviously fucking pick the second option.
Especially because so many ADULT WOMEN seem to believe that Alicent is a “whore” and they are so ignorant to her situation. It disgusts me how they blame this child for what happened, have some goddamn empathy.

Can somebody explain to me how the so-called """"""feminists"""""""" of the fandom have made it their life's purpose to continuously hate on the TWO FEMALE KEY PLAYERS of A song of ice and fire, and rebrand that as feminism?
Like, we're talking about the two main female heroines of the story, a story that became popular precisely for having these two female characters, the exiled teen sex slave and the orphan little girl that suffocates from society's expectations. If you call yourself a """"""feminist""""""" and a member of asoiaf fandom and you hate/don't care for these characters, guess what you're certainly not.
How did we come to this? What happened to this fandom? It feels like a nuclear catastrophe going through the tags. All I see is an army of people who joined the fandom because the TV show got really popular, then started repeating the same slogans again and again without giving one fuck about the actual story being told. The five players, the five outcasts, the dwarf, the bastard, the cripple, the exiled sex slave and the non-conforming lady, these are the heroes of the story. These characters. This is why the story became popular. I don't understand how this horrible mutation happened in this fandom, I will never get over this.

I honestly think people read way more into this fandom than what is really there. If I elaborate my thoughts, I fear I will get my head blown off. Also, on that way lies shipwars and shipwars are never fun.
It's also not really any different than what goes on in other fandoms, every fandom ever. I'm just an old fart who thinks that fandom (all fandoms) has gotten weirder and weirder with every passing year (and wish people wouldn't mistake their headcanons for canon) and act like everyone who partakes in the media is of the same thought.
Trust me, I don't expect people to share or even care about my headcanons. I'm afraid to join any Trigun discords or any type of fan-club because I'm pretty sure I disagree with the majority of the fandom on some things that people have heightened emotions about. It's to the point that I really think "people are just making their own story out of this that doesn't resemble what I watched / read" sometimes.
But again, I shouldn't complain too hard, because every fandom. It's just, I don't know... this fandom scares me sometimes.

Okay! Hi, I came to my old asf tumblr (I swear I’m not 17 anymore 💀) to tell you that I’m so excited for you. It was forever ago but I commented under Hanna on ur AO3 (first time was under two princes i think. I think you have a real talent 4 writing character driven narratives. Reading ur stuff always feels like breathing in cold, fresh air. obvi i’m gonna miss your writing. but i hope u’re able to get somewhere fulfilling w/ ur original works. ty for all that you shared, n i’m here 2 support
Full disclosure: This made my day.
Thank you for being so kind and strange in the best way. (I'm ignoring the blasphemy about character-driven narrative because I can't process it right now. it's too nice.)

Based on the facts that Artemis:
was able to perfectly portray the emotions regarding remembering and being sad about Julius and did so to try and ease the suffering of someone to whom he didn't really 'know' at the time
has canonically worked at a bake sale with his mother
undoubtedly knows the intricacies of each business his family owns and runs down to the specific requirements of the housekeeping staff at the hotel chain be bought out
I propose the idea that he would have a truly spectacular Customer Service Persona, which he detests with every fiber of his being but continues to use as needed because it makes everyone think he is a Nice Young Lad™ and keeps him in as many good graces as possible

My two cents on the whole HBO show removal but boy, it does remind me the importance of physical media. Like, it is absolutely horrible that these shows are being removed from their streaming providers and some just simply won’t be found again. Imagine all that work and effort just poof! Gone! No record really except memories and pirated files.
For as lovely and convenient streaming is, physical media is still so important because no matter how bad the providers say a show is and pull it forever, they can’t pull my DVD or Bluray copy of it. This is a big reason why content creators (animators, cartoonists, comic artists! All artists really!) always hope that people will get a physical copy of something. I make comics so what if, someday, Webtoons or Tapas decided to liquidate all their unpopular comics or less followed comics and then that’s it?
All I’m saying is if you can, sometimes getting a physical copy of something IS worth it. Things get pulled, piracy is bad* (see my tag below as well as this > (to a degree! Please don’t read this as anything beyond me saying support the creators if YOU, as a consumer, feel they are worth supporting!) but a physical copy lasts as long as you have it in your happy hands!
