What would you have done differently with Yoshizawa then?
A few things.
Number 1. As soon as its revealed she is in fact Sumire and not Kasumi she she accepts that about herself then she never wears that Ponytail again. I'm aware they seem to basically be twins and twins will look alike however continuing to have the visual indicator of her time pretending to be Kasumi ruins the whole point of her accepting who she is. The ponytail was the way the game symbolised her "becoming" Kasumi in the flashback with Maruki and its the way it symbolised her remembering the truth with the ribbon falling out. All of that is ruined by the fact she continues to go back to wearing it at various points throughout the game including her final ever cutscene.
So as soon as she rejoins the Thieves and accepts who she is, she should get a new Thieve Design with a different hair style. I'd even argue give her a whole new Thief look that isn't based on Jokers to show she's really discovered her inner rebel and isn't just copying others. Like keep the leotard design cause she is a gymnast but remove the black coat and red gloves and give her something else.
2. They make one mention of her knowing Akechi before the game and then really never do anything with it. I'd play up that aspect. Like how do they know each other? I doubt it would be from middle school since Sumire is a 1st year in High School and Akechi is a 3rd year. What's their history? I'd have had her know Akechi since childhood and have her really know the real Akechi and not the fake persona he puts on. I think it would be interesting if they both spend the majority of the game slightly suspicious of why the other one is acting strange but Akechi is wrapped up in his own plans and Sumire is too distracted by her struggles with her gymnastics to really delve deeper until it all comes out in the 3rd Semester.
Like Atlus clearly cared a lot more about exoanding Akechi's characterisation and his relationship with Joker in Royal than they did with anything to do with Sumire so like.... playing up her connection to Akechi would only benefit her characterisation. Like she doesn't have to be best friends with him since I know he's a justifiably very contentious character however I think it would still be an interesting take.
3. Arguably the most important one. I want to see a very clear personality change after she is revealed to be Sumire. Not just some scenes of her being sad. I want every scene she's in post reveal, be it Social Link or Plot Relevant, to clearly show that Sumire is a different person from Kasumi. I want to be able to point to Sumire and list her personality traits and not have 90% of them overlap with the traits we are told belonged to Kasumi.
4. Make her social link more relevant to Maruki's plot and make it an unlock requirement for Semester 3. She's only got 5 ranks before Semester 3, you wouldn't be horribly hindering the player by making them also have to max her to get Semester 3. Just make it that you can't remove her entirely from the plot and it wouldn't make a huge difference because currently with minimal rewrites you can do that and the game does not feel like it's missing anything.
5. Have her join earlier. I know, I know she should join when she accepts her true self because that's the whole point of awakening to a Persona. Well the issue is the game already fucks that concept up by having her awaken to her persona without accepting her true self and sure they can claim "oh she hadn't awakened full, it wasn't powerful enough, ther was no blood when she awakened the first time" OK I'd believe all that if the game didn't force her to save Joker in Sae Niijima's Palace. If she was able to solo her way through part of that Palace and save Joker there's no reason they didn't let her join during Shido's Palace which would then allow her to actually interact more with the other Thieves cause as it stands she feels the most out of place within the group. Even Akechi feels less out of place with the group because at least the rest of the Thieves know him and all have their own relationships with him (none of them good but they exist) whereas Sumire might as well be a stranger to most of them. She's Jokers friend and at best an acquaintance to the rest. Alternatively have more scenes through the game where she gets to hang out with the other Thieves and not just Joker.
But yeah any combination of these suggestions I think would have improved the execution of Sumire's story in the game.
And I want to take this moment to say I don't dislike the character we are given in the game. I don't really know who that character is, where Kasumi ends and Sumire begins, but the character we get I like. She's charming, if a bit forced at times, and the plot had so much potential. I just think they didn't do enough to really stick the landing on the execution of that plotline but I know a lot of people really love Sumire and love her relationship with Joker and that's great. I regularly do that romance option because I do think the games been pushing it throughout so it feels natural. However she shouldn't just be there for the romance. And I do love her design I mean I had her as my icon for a while not that long ego. Just because I critise something doesn't mean I hate it, I only point these shortcomings out because I love Persona 5 and I think it could have been even better if they'd put the effort into making Sumire feel as organic to the story as Maruki does.

So.... Has anyone ever reached a realization that Kasumi's spirit appearing as the main basis for Cendrillon returning might actually symbolize her being more of Sumi's true fairy godmother character in her story as opposed to Maruki who was a more twisted version of that trope?
Like think about it for a sec... And this is coming from someone who adored the fairytale (Disney version especially) when they were little so... In any version, Cinderella's main traits are her selflessness and kindness along with bravery considering that despite the abuse she went through, she still stays kind and true to herself and does not let the abuse affect that. That's part of what makes her a rebel, albeit an unconventional kind.
Tumblr media
Sumi has those traits deep down (showcased by the lead up to her false awakening which she spoke more as Sumire since as I've mentioned before, her ultimate breaking point was more about hurting and letting her loved ones like Maruki and Joker down. She was more concerned about them as opposed thinking about herself or the scholarship) but the biggest problem was that she wasn't being true to herself and acted selfishly, even preferring to run away from her problems instead.
The fairy godmother character shows up when Cinderella was nearing her lowest point. It was even sometimes interpreted that the godmother represents Cinderella being rewarded for her unending kindness and unselfishness, leading to her happy ending.
When Maruki helped like so, it made things worse for her but when Kasumi's spirit showed up... It made things better for her and helped kickstart her own happily ever after. Just like the actual fairy godmother!
Tumblr media
Starting with bringing her Persona back and this was when Sumire regained the other traits she was starting to lack/lose and became more like Cinderella herself. She became brave enough to stand on her own feet and stop running, she shows more of her kindness to others and even Maruki despite what he did, and she became selfless by deciding to mourn and honor her sister properly by moving forward and not basically live as her for her own selfish reasons as that's what Kasumi would have actually wanted her to do.
In a sense, Maruki was unwittingly rewarding her selfish desires and enabling it. ("Accept this contract... The spell cast upon you.")
Kasumi's spirit on the other hand was rewarding her for being honest and not running anymore. ("Such tenacity... It seems to fit you better than ever before...")

I have gotten far enough in the third semester (right at the final boss) so I'm curious on why you feel Yoshizawa's story doesn't fit with P5? Given the overarching theme of facing reality head on, not running away from your problems/trauma and making your own decisions, I don't think she's a misfit in the game.
I didn't say it doesn't fit. I said it's executed poorly. On paper her theme fits fine. The problem is I don't know who Sumire is. We get like 3 scenes of the real Sumire and the rest of the time she continues to act almost identical or at least very similar to how she's acted the entire game when she believed she was Kasumi. The problem is we know that personality is Kasumi's because we see her in the flashback. I don't know who Sumire Yoshizawa is because her last 5 Confidant ranks make you believe shes meant to be more reserved and shy compared to her sister.... but the rest of the time in plot scenes she doesn't act like that, she continues to act the same way she has the whole game. I also don't like the fact that the last cutscene we see of her is her wearing her Kasumi ponytail and acting the way we know Kasumi acts. Atlus didn't want us to like Sumire, they wanted us to like Kasumi so they weren't able to let Kasumi go after it's revealed shes actually the one that's dead.
Also I don't necessarily think she was needed. I think Maruki's plot would work perfectly fine without Sumire's inclusion. You can get to that part of the game without ever having touched Sumire's Confidant which sort of proves her story isn't integral to Maruki's plotline because otherwise her Confidant would have been an unlock requirement for the 3rd Semester and its not (and don't anyone come and try and argue with me on this the only thing you need to unlock the 3rd Semester is Maruki's Social Link, no one else's, not Sumire's and not Akechi's).
So basically the reason I think its executed poorly is sure the themes are all about facing the truth no matter how painful and learning to live your life for you and not let someone else control it BUT I don't get a good sense that Sumire is doing that. It was a lot of tell and not show, the fact in her last ever scene she's still dressed liked Kasumi, without her glasses, with the same ponytail, and still acting the exact same way shes acted the whole game when she thought she was Kasumi etc. Does not give me the sense that she has moved on no matter how many times she'll tell me she has.
I like the concept of Sumire. She had a lot of potential, but she was not the priority when they were making the Royal content. She was added cause they felt they had to add a waifu cause they'd done that with previous game upgrades like Marie in Golden. The priority in Royal storywise was Akechi and Maruki, you can remove Sumire from the plot and you don't lose anything massively which I feel is a problem for a character they dedicate so much time throughout the game to.

Akechi would take a picture of the cakepop from evil Starbucks and post it to his foodblog, with the caption: “Effervescent ✨☺️🧁 The icing truly melts in my mouth 😍 So sweet! So delicious! 🤗 I’m definitely recommending this cakepop!” and then he’d throw it in the garbage without taking a single bite

I feel like you could define Persona 3, 4, and 5 by the seasons:
Persona 3: Spring
Persona 4: Summer
Persona 5: Winter
Just a thought I had while playing them.

Yay someone else who’s obsessed with Thieves’ Den and what implications it has for Joker and how it tells us how he sees the world and his confidants. He doesn’t nerf the other thieves just for an advantage because he wants it to feel as real as and as true to them as possible. Though I argue that it’s not entirely accurate but pretty close. “ It leads to the question why doesn’t he just play it with his actual Phantom Thieves. Probably because time crunch and blowing off steam he needs someplace where time and consequences have no real meaning.
hi ^_^ yeah like one thing about me is that i love taking stuff that doesn't actually have much real significance and running with it because it's really funny to me. it's really funny to me. like obviously the thieves den exists purely as fun side content for the player in a rerelease game, and its minor mentions in-story are just to introduce it naturally, but if you decide to take it legiterally its really fun. (have i ever mentioned how funny it is to me that the default thieves den bgm is an instrumental version of no more what ifs) (this doesn't work In Universe because the thieves den is unlocked before jazz jin but like. its really funny to me. you get it) (and yeah every thieves den conversation etc becomes way funnier when you remember that this is meant to be in joker's brain)
im also like this with, like, the third eye (i cant believe joker is cheating at games with his magic insight/vision powers </3 don't tell anybody!) and grapplinghook (i have a set of comics planned about grapplinghook that i haven't gotten to yet bc life is hell but i really really really love grapplinghook. my 'joker persona5 fucking loves his grappling hook' kind-of-headcanon is very special to me lmao) like yeah these are literally just gameplay elements but we can get silly with it.
anyway *joker voice* lets play this card game together gang! and then the others do way worse than they did in his brain. or something. joker loves her friends so much👍
