" six thousand years of grief "
I have an absolute obsession with Steven Universe and quite honestly an even bigger obsession with Rose Quartz and Pink Diamond.

So, I’ve been working on the Steven Universe crossover episodes for Jacob & Coco Across the Universe (my post canon Collector-centric AU), and during the initial planning, I had an interesting idea. For a bit of context, each planet that the pair visits is meant to teach at least one of them a lesson, typically via meeting a character whom they might be able to learn from or relate to.
In the case of the Steven Universe crossover, Coco was originally just gonna connect with and relate to Spinel (though Lapis could also work a tiny bit). This is still the case, as they gonna become friends in the second part where I give them a pretty touching scene. However, before that, there is an episode in which Coco connects with another character. I’m not sure how I’ll make this happen exactly, as the two won’t truly meet, but Coco will relate to this character. They will relate to her almost as much, if not moreso, than they relate to Spinel.
We have been comparing Spinel and the Collector a lot, but there’s one character that we’ve been overlooking in terms of parallels. And that character is......
Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz
.
.
Hear me out!
Let’s start from the beginning. I know she gets a lot of hate, but Pink did actually have a pretty rough childhood, the kind that would mess with one’s sense of right and wrong. Pink was raised by three older sisters, the Diamonds, ancient powerful beings who committed genocide and war for many years. Sound familiar? On top of that, they weren’t always the best to Pink, and never took her seriously. As far as we can tell, this may have been the case for our dear Collector.
Pink had a tendency to treat other people like toys, and it was likely because she legitimately didn’t know better. It can be hard for young immortals to learn that others have feelings, especially when you’re taught otherwise.
And despite that, when she was sent down to another planet, she discovered other lifeforms, and she loved it there. She discovered how wrong the others were, and she hated the destruction her own species brought upon the world and beings she had begun to love. So she fought back. She became Rose.
This is where the stories diverge.
Even after thousands of years, Rose was still learning new things about kindness and love and people. Sure she wasn’t a very good person, but she wanted to be. She tried to be. Even when she kept fucking it up over and over and over again, she tried. She learned how to love and care for other beings, something that went directly against everything she had ever been told growing up.
And eventually, it seems that Rose had a realization of sorts. “There is something about be that is inherently unable to be a truly compassionate being. I was born a Diamond, and I’m not sure I’ll ever really stop being the way I was raised to be. I want to become a human.” And so she did. She likely believed that she wasn’t good enough, kind enough, to be worthy of such love her friends gave her. They didn’t deserve all her flaws.
So she chose to become a being that she believed wouldn’t have those flaws.
Something better.
Someone better.
If only Coco could do that too.
~~~~
So yeah, I realized there are an unhinged amount of parallels between the Collector and Pink Diamond. Yes, I am part of the Pink Diamond Apologist Squad. That is mainly because of the parallels between the two gave me realizations. Also, I like Rose and think her arc is actually kinda inspiring when you tell it in order. Also, her being a bad person was probably a retcon.
But anyways, yeah, that is my mini-essay comparing these two very interesting characters.
rusty venture exists in the pink diamond sphere where, while he absolutely chose to do shitty things he didnt have to, there is absolutely no timeline in which he'd be a "good" person bc of how fucked his baseline is
Mk1 Smoke/Tomas headcanons :D !
His personality would make people’s hearts melt. He’s the type people talk about as an example of a good person
Oblivious to people having a crush on him
Horrible at singing. He knows it and makes it a goal to torment people with it
Speaks English, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Czech. He’s decent at Japanese but the sentence structure messes him up sometimes
Big fan of Johnny Cage. Was sad that he forgot to bring his Johnny Cage poster when forming Shirai Ryu
Had an indirect selfie with Johnny Cage. Cage turned his back around and Tomas had an opportunity to selfie. He texts Kuai Liang the picture with the caption “we are besties” 💀
Is the brother that the gets sick the most
Back when he and Bi Han were younger they would play with barbie/plastic dolls and do dramatic soap operas of dysfunctional family dynamics (it specifically has to be that or Bi Han is not playing)
Broke Kuai Liang’s bike and blamed it on Bi Han
Evaporated Bi Han’s drink and blamed it on Kuai Liang
He makes his coffee is so light that Kenshi started sobbing when Tomas made one for him (in a bad way)
Pre-MK1 He once cooked for Madam Bo’s restaurant
He somewhat gave Kung Lao food poisoning.
Had a fun time with OSHA the next day
Gotten recognition because of Johnny Cages’s games/films
Knows what a thirst trap is but pretends to not know it because there are edits of him
“Why do I have so many edits? I’m not hot. Or… babygirl.” WRONG BUZZER SOUND
Laughs at memes calling Shang Tsung a guy liker (he likes men too he can do that)
Unironically knows so much Steven Universe lore. But everyone else touched grass and can’t understand his references. Not even Johnny Cage
Raiden understands SU lore to some extent. Tomas hates him for being a Pink Diamond apologist
Was introduced to Slenderman as a teenager and unironically had restless nights until he saw the concept of a creepypasta
I wrote so many headcanons omfg!!! Didn’t realize it until I scrolled woops 🙇🏻‍♂️. Hope y’all like em
My thoughts about Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz
I don't understand the hate that Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz gets. I also don't understand when people call her the real Villain while White Diamond is right there.
Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz did something that a lot of people in real life do. She left her parents house and became a new person.
Pink Diamond did something that is a normal thing to do for a traumatized person. She ran away.
People that judge Pink Diamond for the things she did they probably don't know what its like to be surrounded by toxic/abusiv family members.
When you are traumatized you do everything that leave that toxic place. You don't think about everyone else at first because you should always put your mental state first. You can apologize later and I am pretty sure that most people would forgive and understand.
I think the only person in SU that was never angry at Pink was Greg. Because he also ran away from his home. He knows what it's like to have toxic parents.
She never told the other Crystal Gems that she is Pink because she hated being Pink Diamond. She preferred being Rose Quartz. Also maybe she didn't want them to treat her different just because she is a Diamond.
Yes, she did left Spinel. Like a lot of older siblings are sadly forced to leave their younger siblings the moment they turn 18. Should we make them feel even more guilty than they already do?
She didn't brought Steven in the world so that he can fix her mistakes. How was she supposed to know what would happen in the future? She gave away her existence so that Steven could live.
How is that everyone can forgive space nazis (The other diamonds) for the things they did, but Pink Diamond is the true Villain?
Whatever. I truly believe that Pink Diamond was truly happy as Rose Quartz. Especially after being traumatized for probably centuries.
She was finally happy in the end. Good for her.
Sincerely, a Rose Quartz apologist
PS: Her name is Rose Quartz and Pink Diamond is her dead name.
PS: Rose Quartz did nothing wrong and I die on that hill.
PS: Rose Quartz x Greg is the only straight couple that I'll defend and fight for.
characters i think make really good litmus tests to see if someone is normal. keep in mind they don't have to like these characters but they have to be normal in their hatred of them, and more importantly normal about other people liking them
Mabel Pines: if they respond with any variation of "she's so selfish! she ended the world! dipper gave up everything for her!" cannot be trusted to have good character takes. 0/10 media literacy
All Might: the moment they break out the "All Might is the real villain" Run.
Pink Diamond: this is a fun and potentially controversial one. if they hate her to the point they think she is fundamentally worse than the other diamonds, uh oh spaghetti-o i do not want to talk character analysis with them.
Sam Winchester: refer back to Mabel, and just insert Dean for Dipper. Same brand of bad character takes
C!Dream: literally just mention the character and watch as the "abuse apologist" allegations come in.
Zuko and Pink Diamond are functionally identical, so its just a matter of sentimentality for if you recognize one as an imperialist and the other as "an abuse victim": A rant about Lily from Glass of Water
Lily has a lot of great points behind why she wants abuse victims written the way she does literally up until she starts using logic like "Because ONLY 30% of abuse victims become abusers, NO fiction should portray that." That's... not how math works, Lily. Because it even brings up the idea of who gets the privilege of being labeled a past victim. She doesn't want Zuko to be called a villain going through a redemption arc basically BECAUSE he went through a successful redemption arc. She wants HIM to be called the victim... Even though he was just as willing to kill, kidnap, and destroy as Azula before his redemption arc began. They were raised by the same father, they had the same influences. Zuko was treated as the black sheep for caring about Fire Nation soldiers. Hell, the story is written acknowledging that Iroh had to go realize the flaws of his people and past, too.
It's just that, unlike with Shadow Weaver and Catra, the show never glamorized or zoomed in on Iroh and Zuko's crimes because they knew they wanted them to become good guys; so Zhao is introduced almost immediately to siphon off our animosity towards the villains. How mad can we be at Zuko burning down Suki's town when he's being bullied, too? lol. A cheap but effective trick. One that people don't have to fall for. There are people (especially people of color) who feel that it doesn't matter how sad a backstory an imperialist has, a colonizer is still a colonizer and ending the show with his apologist, reactionary monarchy government turning the colonies into their own republic is still coddling imperialism. Lily is so stuck on Zuko being a Good Imperialist that she won't even acknowledge that he needs a redemption arc to GET to that position! So, to justify her lowered standards, she points to White Diamond on Steven Universe and begs people to hate that the Bad Imperialist... ... ... continued to be a villain until the very end and was reduced to everyone's embarrassingly racist grandma? What is she mad about, then? That Steven Universe uses some wish fulfillment that if you have a couple of conversations with your racist and sexist relatives, you can get them to at least stop harassing you. "I don't need you to respect me, but I hope one day you want to re-join this party we are having here, when you change your mind." Lily is PISSED off at that -- again because -- that DOES work on a large number of people, but since it doesn't work on ALL annoying relatives or alt-Right people, they shouldn't show it in fiction at all. She goes out of her way to pinpoint exactly why it works: your cousin spouting Facebook memes has no real commitment to the ideas he's repeating. Only dedicated political activists need more than a stern talking to for changing their minds. Okay then. Lily, these are CARTOONS. 90% of the people in the lives of the CHILDREN and families watching Avatar The Last Airbender, She-Ra, and Steven Universe are just spouting memes they saw on Facebook. Why are you asking cartoons to give advice on how to deal with Ben Shapiro?!
Lily even gets mad about Greg's cousin Andy. I'm sorry, allegory aside, I didn't realize that its illegal for Greg's family to be angry with him for disappearing for 20 years. Ya remember that he was just a little punk rock wannabe who hated his suburban family, right? And how DARE Andy be confused and angry that Greg 1) had a kid and never told the family and 2) had a kid with an alien. I'm sorry, how much of a bigot can we call Andy for being confused about a childbirth with a 100% chance of killing the mother? But since Andy is supposed to represent your Republican-voting uncle, he isn't even allowed to have a point when all he was upset about was that he's taking care of the elderly family members all by himself because Greg ran away. Nope, he's not allowed ANY personality. And even though his only redemption was that he wanted to know his cousin, Steven, this is treated as some pie-in-the-sky unrealistic wish fulfillment and the writers didn't punish him enough because... ... ... I'm sorry, what does Andy owe to his cousin's dead wife's old subordinates? He should apologize that he cares as little about Gems as they do about him? Lily is more upset that the show is "selling" their queer fans the idea that going no contact with relatives actually does hurt their feelings than she cares about actual human-Gem relations.
So, on one hand, you have Lily hating a show because Steven saves the galaxy by telling a sisterhood that their dysfunctional family drove their sister-daughter to suicide - and that's a bad show because that sisterhood are colonizing, genociding imperialists, so why should Lily care that they realize the error of their ways through how they've damaged themselves? (Why should we care if white people hurt themselves when they are racist against people of color; why should we care that men hurt themselves when they are sexist against women, why should heteronormative people care that their toxic views on sex, gender, and orientation hurt themselves as much as queer people?) On the other hand, Lily refuses to call the crown prince of a colonizing, genociding imperialist royal family a "villain" because he had a rough childhood, buddy.
Zuko is fundamentally incapable of leaving the paradigm he was born into; if he did, he'd be the freakin' Buddha. (Unlike Pink Diamond, who actually DID die and reincarnate into a new paradigm so that she COULD offer new solutions for Gems as Steven. XD) Every solution Zuko can propose starts with justifying the continued existence of the very political structure that caused the world 100 years of grief.
Prince Zuko and Pink Diamond are functionally the same character and Lily's mad that Pink Diamond's family weren't written as sociopaths who don't love her... because it gets in the way of her belief that bigoted family members aren't capable of loving you.
What the hell did people want Steven to do? Kill the diamonds? Yeah sure bro that's a great idea hey um what happens after he kills the pseudo religious being of godlike power? The issues on home world are systemic and run deep killing the diamonds would be horrible idea- yes they are dictators but you can't fix the issues fascism causes by just killing the leader and in some cases you make everything worse, i might not buy whites redemption (she went from genuinely terrifying matriarch and cruel to a blushy 'i must atone mess?) but steven was not a selfish idiot who forgives other people's abusers on their behalf, if another war started earth would be screwed, the solution to the problem wasn't as simple as kill the bad guy- to everyone who complains that diamonds will just start killing again- steven is taking active effort to make sure that never happens! I get why people are angry the diamonds get away with abusing pink, being dictators and still have power in home world- it feels like a major injustice but the bigger picture flat out shows that steven isn't being selfish for maintaining his moral purity (and even if he was I would defend him, the same way i do with aang and batman). While I have my complaints about the ending (mainly how white diamond was written) and hate how pink went from morally grey/questionable to evil hate sink, the fact that the secondary crystal gems, and lars and the off colors were basically irrelevant in the finale, but I will fight anyone who says the only way to solve complicated issues in the world is to 'kill the bad guys!' and that when fighting against racism or abusers or fascists etc the only correct way to deal with the problem is kill the people who are racist or abusive or fascist- some of you people are so focused on 'justice' or 'fairness' that you neglect everything's else like if I applied your logic to the real world we could just forget things like protecting basic rights or fixing systemic elements of social injustice etc, I genuinely hate the diamonds (especially white) and the og shows finale as a whole but steven is not an abuse apologist- he's a diplomat who uses violence as a last resort, there is a ton of other issues with su but God can we look at the ending with nuance? It sucked ass with the pacing and the fusion designs were pretty bad but it wasn't endorsing abuse apologism- Steven was focused on the bigger picture while I have my issues with him as a character sometimes I can say he was being noble here and was not a whiny piss baby, pussyfooting around something he 'needed' to do. The show was never about good killing evil and our 'moral duty' to do so, it was a show with anti war messages with a few botched aesops and wonky art, there's actual shit to complain about with steven universe but Everytime I hear all the comments about how toh made up for steven universe's sins or about how batman and aang are selfish etc it drives me insane,like I could point out so many unfortunate implications in su that are actually bad but y'all focus on the least problematic shit in the show and accuse of Rebecca Sugar a bisexual jew married to a black man of being a nazi apologist! You claim toh made up for the sins of Steven universe and laugh at the 'jab' the show made at Steven universe but there's a few things that don't hold up Dana is friends with Sugar (it is definitely not a jab) and the shows while they have similarities should not be compared, they are fundamentally different shows, like the stuff they do have in common (developing several characters that end up having no real effect on the finale or plot, badly written main antagonists etc) still don't justify the comparison yes they are filled to the brim with lgbt characters and are fantasy shows but one is magical girl/boy space opera about self love the other is a dark fantasy comedy that is about inclusion and coping with disabilities/trauma and while they have overlap they are not the same.
A thought
When Amethyst is fighting Jasper she claims that Rose said she was perfect just the way she was.
Now that we know Rose is Pink Diamond, that’s her creator saying she’s just fine. I’m telling you guys, Pink was also an off color and just wanted her babies to be free and be themselves without the rigid totalitarian structures.
