Is Steven Universe Racist?

Well, it has it’s blind spots like any other show.

Really, accusations of this sort stem from the phenomenon of queer media needing to be perfect without so much as a blemish of stereotyping, unfortunate implications or what have you. Because if they have these flaws that non-queer media have, well... it’s a bad look for representation.

So we dog-pile on Rebecca Sugar and discredit SU despite how a lot of goddamn people have been touched by it. Many have felt seen by the show in terms of personal experience. Many felt that the characters were complex in a way few cartoons truly get right.

Yet for some... that doesn’t matter. Caucasian Steven poofs black-coded Bismuth over her radical ideals no matter the nuance to it? Bad look. Human characters of color aren’t as fleshed out in Sugar’s ideas of Sublime Storytelling? She’s clearly racist. Pearl mourns her love in Rose Quartz? Bury Your Gays despite... many other living queer characters.

Even if this wasn’t an overstatement of harm, this impossible standards SU and its contemporaries are held to is harmful unto itself. It makes it so that nobody can see themselves in something that’s imperfect but feels personal to them.

Nobody really would expect much of this if it wasn’t swinging for the fences in terms of pushing for queer representation in children’s media. None of them can be personal because that means those potential blindspots become too hard to ignore. It’s like the paparazzi trying to catch celebrities in embarrassing scandals.

Like... what would a perfect piece of media that doesn’t “look bad” for representation even look like?

Wannabe Disney Prince Forrest is a youthful soul. While he towers over most of the cast, his chirpy nature, altruistic spirit, big sparkly eyes, a tendency break into song means basically everyone in ICT tends to fawn over him. Even their harsher members at worst tend to write him off as just a harmless dip.

…And that’s what he’s counting on.

Fun Facts

Forrest’s surname is a corruption of matcha.

Forrest (forest green) is one of several characters to change colors and names on development, starting off as Don (celadon).

Forrest’s initial concept was a small boy who mostly hung out in the woods and talked to animals. The idea was retooled into Cedric (citron).

Forrest’s exact hairdo wasn’t finalized until relatively late in development.

Forrest continues the theme of Green type Drewmans (Chloe, Clarence, Lyman and from his season, Monty and Olive) having an eye motif.

Forrest’s final characterization is a play on how the name “Snow White” is formatted.

Forrest’s been through a lot in the past. It’s why he’s so positive all the time. And, much more to the point, it’s why he’s so cunning.

Forrest keeps birds, bugs, and a grown alligator in his massive, tree-like afro.

SU AU - Honest Pink 2

What if after the "Real Person" encounter with Greg, Rose really thinks on it & realizes that she wants to be really & truly honest with him.

So, she asks him to come meet her alone.

She's extremely nervous about it, but becomes Pink & tells him everything & during this whole conversation, it's like she's processing it all for the first time.

She breaks down, saying that her friends had all been corrupted because of her & it's the most emotionally distraught she's ever been.

For his part, Greg is horrified by all this, but also understands how torn up by it all she is & he can also really identify with having a smothering family life, so he embraces her.

He later tells her of his own experiences in a stifling living environment, admitting that it wasn't as bad as what she'd been through, but he can see why she did it. It wasn't right bringing all those Gems into it, but, again, he can understand.

He doesn't persecute her because, this more than anything shows him that Gems are more human than they care to think. That they were just people & this really does a lot for their relationship.

She turns back into Rose & life goes on, but the difference here being that Greg has already begun the character arc where he's more involved with the Gem stuff as now he fully realizes that Gems are people.

Either he doesn't do much besides encourage, support, & help wherever he can, but it's actually surprisingly appreciated. Or he becomes a viable part of the team. (If the latter, then I kinda wanna see him with an electric axe like Marceline has, but in his own style.)

I expect that he'd encourage Rose to tell the rest of her family too, but whether she does or not depends on who's writing this.

The same can be said of how early Steven learns about the truth of his heritage.

Greg would definitely drop hints & whatnot, which, depending on whether Pearl was aware of his knowledge, could either antagonize him to her or make them each other's support.

It could even get to a point where Pearl realizes that he's the only one that she can talk to about it because he already knows everything.

I definitely don't see them going beyond friends & I can still see her being jealous of him, but at the same time, he could talk her through a lot of stuff & it would make her feel better, so it could just be really confusing for her emotionally.

In the end, I'd want Steven to get to a point where he acknowledges that he's half Pink Diamond & is okay with that.

Accepts it, because I think that being able to accept that Diamonds are just people too & can be just as messed up as them, would do a lot for his mental health.

Not everything, but a lot.

I also think that because of all this, there'd have been more instances of Steg Multiverse fusion, but that's just me.

I kinda also want Steven to be able to meet his grandparents.

They might not even be good people, but I feel like he still should've at least met them in future!

I swear this is relevant to my Steven Flint DeMayo posts!

For my fanfiction, I will name some unknown gems and their occupations.

This gem is

Prasiolite

(green Amethyst is another term in our world. Before anyone complains I would like to point out, Rubies/Sapphires are the same gem in our world, Nephrites/Jades, the different types of beryls are EXTREMELY different in sizes and occupations and thus I am making Prasiolite very different from a typical Amethyst.

Their job is to sing at large gatherings.

They are rare and are NOT humanoid beyond their face. The hands below are not apart of them though... that's their special stages stage if performing in Pink's Balls.

Clear Quartzes

Heaven and Earth beetle was currupted so they're now color locked to where they were but in my fic(s), they are clear quartzes who:

change color depending where they are. They are spies and are not fighters (natrually).

Kunzite

Better known as the Water Bear in the OG SU and has a green counterpart in the comics. (BTW those are real). Kunzite is associated with water so it double works.

These gems are for scouting oceans for certain types of life forms (since some planets have advance sea life) and finding places suitable for building gem structures like the Sea Shrine and the Lunar Sea Spire. THEY ARE NOT FIGHTERS (natrually).

Back to my Infinity Train x Gravity Falls x Steven Universe AU which until I get a real title will be tagged as Infinite Falling Universe. This time we're going on the Steven Universe side of the story which are also subject to change. The first part involving the Infinity Train gang can be found right here

IFU takes place a bit after the ending of Steven Universe Future. After a few months on the road Steven runs out of cash so he gets a job at the Mystery Shack for the summer

The news about Gems,Gem attacks and Era 3 have spread world wide but most people in Gravity Falls brushed it off as another tourist trap

At first Stan hired Steven because he considered him the ultimate con artist of Beach City who could help drum up business. It took a while to convince him that Gem stuff was actually real but eventually after the Crystal Gems and Connie showed up one day on lion he fully believed him

Steven is still dating Connie and she comes to visit with lion every weekend and during major holidays

Connie isn't phased by any of the supernatural things in Gravity Falls considering she went to space and spent all of her life surrounded by Gems and other weird happenings in Beach City. She's more interested in interacting with them and exploring but only when she's staying for a long time. Most of the time she visits is spent with Steven

Sometimes they go on dates into town like the arcade and Greasy's Diner. Lazy Suzy is an avid Connverse stan.

Steven is mostly regulated to staff work but when traffic is low he'll sometimes show off some of his Gem powers to help get more visitors. He tries not to do it too often to avoid being put on a pedestal again

He's the closest with Soos and the twins. Wendy is cool too but her and her friends are too intense sometimes. He still hangs out with them but doesn't really feel like he fits in the group.

At first Dipper wanted to study Steven and his powers but eventually he gave up and Steven became more of a big brother figure

Mabel thinks his Gem powers are the actual coolest thing in the world. She created her own Gemsona and tries to summon her 'inner Gem warrior',much to Stan and Dipper's confusion. She asks about his adventures and she's the only one besides Dipper he tells most of them to

Dipper thinks Steven doesn't know about the journal but he has a basic idea of what it is
