Kiri’s wish was the bois beeing sleepy and cuddly, so here they are! It’s the first time I drew them not-chibi with clean lineart and colors. Figuring out the pose took some time, but I’m pretty happy with the outcome. Ignore the anatomical errors, I did my best.

Tagged by @fordanoia​ (thank you!) - I did a 2020 summary of art, and now it’s time for some self-positivity!

Rules: It’s time to love yourselves! Choose your 8 (ish) favorite works you created in the past year (fics, art, edits, crafts, projects, etc.) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you brought into the world in 2020. Tag as many writers/artists/etc. as you want (fan or original) so we can spread the love and link each other to awesome work!

I don’t know if I’ll do 8?  But here goes.

1. Ford as King Bacchus (for JK Simmons birthday, Jan 2020) - while not the most sophisticated painting job, I still feel okay about the work I did on the clothes and the crown especially (gold is hard).  It was good practice for experimenting with painting techniques in CSP.

2. Trust/Paranoia (for Forduary, Feb. 2020) - one of those instances in which the dynamic of the poses and expressions really came out the way I wanted them to.  I thought this had some good drama to it.

3. Six Characters Fanart Challenge (May 2020) - actually completing this felt good!  And it made me feel good to do a set of mostly non-GF characters and remind myself that I can, in fact, still draw other faces and so on.  (Listen, don’t get me wrong; I have drawn the grunks So Many Times over the last few years because I wanted to, because it brings me joy!  But I do worry about getting in a rut sometimes.)

4. Childhood (June 2020) - first time trying just some straight-up painting for the background here, based on photos of my childhood home on the Jersey Shore, and memories of those magical dusk hours playing on the beach.  I’m usually a linework kind of person, but I think I just had a sketch for this background and built on it.  It’s always still a learning curve, but it came out well enough that it makes me feel nostalgic.  I look at it and can almost feel the coolness of the sand. I miss it.

5. Stan Twins’ Birthday (June 2020) - look I just thought these little tree-octopi were the cutest things.  Overall I still like these two pieces; I like the mood of the landscape I did for the top piece, too.

6. Dipper & Mabel’s 21st Birthday (Aug 2020) - I really liked how the mood and lighting of this one turned out as well.  (Even though I like the expressions I did for the sequel with Stan and Ford better.) This became by far the most popular piece I’ve ever done, like, it’s not even close.  I think that has mostly to do with timing, but I’m also glad that happened with a piece I genuinely feel good about.

7. The Mystery Trio in: Not, In Fact, a Ghost Story (Oct 2020; also on AO3) - the thing I’m proudest of this year, by far: a comic 2 years in the making (off and on, but mostly in 2020). Thank god for CSP.  (In a lot of ways it’s better that it took long enough for me to get CSP and become comfortable using it, because I think it made it better, and in some ways flat-out made it possible. I could have done it without, but it would have been SO much harder and would have taken longer.)  I learned so much doing it. I still feel pretty good about it.

I’m coming in pretty late with this so it’s hard for me to know who’s done it and who hasn’t. So I’m going to tag a few people, and feel free to do it, or not; and if I miss out anyone, please know that if you want to do it I would genuinely love to see it!  Even if you can’t list 8.  Even if you can only list 1 thing you did in 2020 that you feel good about, that’s worth it!  Be kind to yourself for whatever you managed this year.

1. How has your day been?

It’s been okay.  I’m working from home.  Had an 8:30am zoom meeting.  There’s lots of stuff to do.

2. What is the last thing that made you smile?

Drawing, social media, drawing, zooming with friends, phone calls (especially to my Mom, who is in an assisted living facility on lockdown, and she’s bored out of her mind), drawing. (I also have stuff to read, and fanfic to write, but for now i don’t want to get sidetracked from the drawing.)

4. If you are in some kind of quarantine/self-isolation: is there anything you’d like to achieve in this time?

I’m not really, although I’m trying to stay in / stay isolated from people as much as possible.  Uhhhh... I’m working on a comic, and by golly I will consider it an achievement when I get that done.

5. Post a selfie (if you’re comfortable with that)

My piece for the “So Many Falls” Fanzine :D

It’s not a secret that I’m a fan of the Mystery Trio AU, but I never told how I imagine the beginnings of this AU. And because I love the “Welcome to Gravity Falls” postcard so much, I wanted to make my own.

When I was finished, I got the opportunity to turn my piece into real postcards:

Luckily I draw on different layers and could make it into landscape format without drawing everything new :) There are still some to buy at the leftover sale @gravityfallsauzine​ !

It's not terrible? But it doesn't... do a lot, either. Despite its low price, I haven't gotten it because of a reason that i still can't post details about yet, but hopefully will be able to soon....

And while this is not Ford merch: https://www.etsy.com/listing/557949799/gravity-falls-inspired-grunkle-stan?ref=shop_home_active_7 -- I include it because I would be surprised if the maker could not be induced to consider creating a Ford version. But there, you start to get into commissioning OOAK pieces, which of course is fine, but not the same thing as being able to buy in-stock merchandise.

(I reblogged a couple of things earlier this evening - @professor-cinnamon-roll takes commissions for felt dolls, while @teepeehead​ takes commissions for needle-felted dolls. Cool stuff! But not quite the same thing as "merch".)

I've seen a couple of people make fan-made figures. @pirably​ has at least started a portal-Ford fig that looks really cute, and I know that amolecularmachine has also worked on sculpey figs of Ford and Stan. The only completed one I've seen was on dA, and IRONICALLY, it was, again, Distressed Gold Ford. (whyyyyy)

New Addiction (Ford Pines)

I saw @pirably post a drawing with Ford reading Harry Potter, and I had to write something because of how adorable he looked ^^

I remember getting hooked on the books when I saw very young, and I pre-ordered most of them when they were released. Also I managed to read them all in a day, which was fun :)

Harry Potter still holds a very dear place in my heart, and I can totally see Dipper getting Ford hooked on the series.

 When Dipper mentioned the book series titled Harry Potter to Stanford, at first he was hesitant. The fact there were witches did turn him away at first, but hearing Dipper gush about the books and how it had gone on to be an amazing movie series turned Ford’s heart to mush, and he promised to read it once he and Stan returned from their voyage.

“Sorcerer’s Stone huh?” Ford mumbled to himself, sitting on the couch with a pleasant sigh. He and Stan had returned that night, and after a hot shower and quick shaving session that had Stan yelling at him about setting off the smoke detectors, Ford found himself beginning the book Dipper had sent some time ago, it’s sequels stacked neatly beside him. Stan couldn’t tear Ford away from the fourth book when it came time to pick up the twins the next morning, a child-like smile on Ford’s face as he immersed himself in a world he was growing to love. The younger twin rolled his eyes and left to pick up the kids, happy to see Ford so relaxed for once and not immersed in research. He was lying on his stomach when Stan returned with the twins, now onto the fifth book with his head being propped up by his right arm, grin still on his face as he scanned each page, unaware as Mabel tried to get his attention.

“Ugh Dipper, why did you tell him about Harry Potter?” She whined to her twin, who was snickering at her. “He’s just like you right now!”

“Isn’t it great?” Dipper teased, their bickering going unnoticed by Ford who only shifted in his seat as he continued to read, Stan eventually motioning for the kids to go unpack. His brother read on, eyes shining with curiosity and enjoyment as he continued to lose himself in the world of Harry Potter, his worries gone for once.

Hands and Feet drawing exercise!

I was inspired by @pirably, who has posted a couple of videos of doing drawings with both hands... and both feet!  See the cat and mouse here, and the alligator here.  I had never even THOUGHT of trying to draw with my feet!  But I wanted to find out what it would be like! 

So the above is pretty self-explanatory.  I figured I would just try to do the simplest possible thing, a 3/4 bust portrait of Ford.  First (upper left) is a drawing done (on ipad in CSP) with my right hand, which is dominant.  Second (upper right) was done entirely with my left hand (from sketch to inking).  In both cases, I DID make liberal use of the “undo” function while inking!  (But I do that normally anyway to try again on lines I don’t like; that really IS the magic of digital inking.)  

I already knew that I could draw with my left hand, although I don’t do it regularly.  We had to do off-hand sketching in art classes way back when.  And when I broke my right wrist years ago, I did some writing with my left hand (though no drawing).  I think I’d get more comfortable with it if I practiced more. (Biggest issue - I have the CSP menus all lined up on the left, and I kept hitting the buttons with the side of my hand.)

At bottom -- please excuse my toes!  I promise they are clean, even if they need a little moisturizing -- pencil drawing with my right foot (lower left), and with my left foot (lower right). 

What is it like trying to draw with my feet?  REALLY HARD.  I was already impressed by how good Pirably’s foot-drawings were, but now I have a greater appreciation for that feat! (heh heh)  After I did this, I went back and looked at the videos again, and I noticed that he wisely wrapped his pencils and pens so that they could be more easily gripped; I didn’t think of that, and yeah, holding the pencil was really difficult, I had to readjust often and my toes kept cramping up.  (The opposite foot in the photos is just holding the paper still.)  It was also really hard to get good pressure.  And I tried inking the right-foot piece, and just abandoned that, I couldn’t get a consistent line.

I’m not really sure why the left foot drawing looks “better”?  Firmer?  More confident?  It’s not just because it’s the second one I tried. I think it’s because with the right foot, I was “pushing” the lines, and with the left I was “pulling” the lines more, and somehow that gave me more control? I don’t know.  Pirably suggested it’s because when I tried to draw with my right foot, since my right hand is dominant, I tried to draw like I do with my hand; but my left was more free to “break the rules”. (I’m not sure, I think I tried to draw the way I normally draw with all of them, which is harder with the non-dominant hand. With the feet that didn’t work too well. Despite the way I’m holding the pencil with my toes in the pics, I think the best angle was actually when the pencil was nearly vertical.)

Anyway, I think it would be SUPER FUN to see other artists try this!  Please post and ping me if you do!

My piece for the Road Trip Fanzine :D

Mystery Trio again! @roadtripzine This time the theme of the fanzine was “Road Trip”, so we could send our chosen charas on an adventure to other tourist traps than the Mystery Shack. I chose “The World Biggest Cuckoo Clock” for two reasons. First, I wanted to draw something located in the Black Forest in Germany what I had visited myself. Second, there are more than one big cuckoo clock very near to each other and there was a lot trouble which one is bigger, older, more beautiful... back in the 80s. It felt like a good opportunity to draw a hunted mechanical cuckoo with the Mystery Trio solving the problem in there way. I used this piece to include references to one of my fave movies (it made me so happy that it got recognized!!! X3) and also a great scene from Gravity Falls episode. 

I would love to explain everything else right now, but I don’t want to limit the fun for you (and me ;D), so I will give you some time before I add my nerd talk about details ;D
