Mysterious Lotus Casebook and Complex PTSD Representations: Part I

One of my favorite things about Mysterious Lotus Casebook is how surprisingly nuanced and unusual its portrayal of complex PTSD is. So many shows either introduce character trauma to make the character Sad and Brooding, Angry and Violent (if they’re a villain) or Hesitant to Start a Relationship (if it’s a romance), and that’s usually as in-depth as it gets. If they address the unique after effects of child abuse that lead to complex PTSD at all, it’s usually either explain why a character is a homicidal monster (which is all sorts of problematic) or it’s limited to a single phobia, which can be overcome by the Power of Love, or it’s just something that crops up occasionally for Plot and then forgotten about the rest of the time. 

Mysterious Lotus Casebook gives us two deeply traumatized characters–Li Lianhua and Di Feisheng–who each have clear symptoms of complex PTSD, and yet, their cPTSD manifests completely differently because of the types of traumas that caused it and their relationships to the people causing the traumas. And their manifestations of cPTSD affect just about every level of their being, including their sense of self, their decision-making, and their relationships with others, and it includes some of the incredibly important manifestations of cPTSD that are almost never shown in media while avoiding the most insulting stereotypes! 

PTSD vs cPTSD

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is an anxiety disorder caused by experiencing a single (or short lived) traumatic event (an accident, assault, medical emergency, fighting in a war, etc), where the symptoms last for longer than a month. Symptoms include things like reexperiencing the event (flashbacks), avoidance (of things related to the event), changes in mood (depression, anger, fear, etc), and issues with emotional regulation (hypervigilance–being constantly on the lookout for threats–irritability/angry outbursts, etc.).

Complex PTSD happens if someone has experienced long term, chronic/repeated trauma that induces hopelessness and no chance of escape (survivors of extended child abuse, human trafficking, domestic violence, prisoners of war, slavery, etc.). It’s also often interpersonal in ways a car crash or medical emergency is not, and is particularly linked with chronic trauma during childhood: chronic stress hormones introduce literal physical changes in a growing brain, particularly the amygdala (which processes fear), hippocampus (which is responsible for learning/memory), and the prefrontal cortex (which is responsible for executive function), so it can affect every aspect of life and also affect a child’s progression through developmental stages. In addition to these physical changes to the brain, the prolonged trauma–particularly the helplessness–distorts a child’s sense of self, the perpetrator, and the world in ways that alter their decision making, their memory, and their future relationships. 

For instance, whereas a traumatic event that caused PTSD might make you depressed or not trust the person who harmed you (or to fear driving), the trauma from cPTSD might make you suicidal, blame yourself for your victimization, decide to isolate to avoid interpersonal relationships to keep from getting hurt, or become obsessed with never being harmed again.

Basically, cPTSD has the core symptoms from PTSD with some extra challenges, including issues with emotional regulation, self-concept, interruptions in consciousness, difficulties with relationships, perceptions of the perpetrator, and systems of meaning.

DFS and LLH: CPTSD Symptoms

There’s so much more to say about this than I can cover in this superficial introduction, so this will be the first of a series of metas; I’m hoping to go into more depth about some of these categories in future posts (the DFS and emotional regulation/violence one is already drafted, so stay tuned). 

Difficulties with Relationships (problems with trust, communication, missing red flags): Both DFS and LLH have a history of trusting the wrong people and not trusting the right people, both in the past and in the present of the show: in the past, LLH missed the fact that SGD hated him and DFS missed the fact that JLQ was obsessed with him, and as a result, both sects were destroyed, many people died, and the two almost destroyed each other. If they had communicated with each other instead of fighting at the donghai battle, they might have realized they were being set up and could have worked together, but their difficulties with trust after perceived betrayal made that impossible for them. They both have a history of overlooking red flags in the present–DFS in particular, keeping the red-flag-personified-JLQ around despite her history of poisoning people, including himself–and they both tend to struggle with relationships in the present: LLH runs away from and/or drugs the people who care about him, and DFS sends endless mixed messages by not telling Li Lianhua most of his plans to help him. 

Self-Concept (Self-hatred and self-fragmentation): Li Lianhua is basically the poster child for having a negative self concept: he has an overdeveloped sense of self-blame and responsibility, even believing he deserves to die for leading his men to their deaths, and once he learns he was manipulated and SGD was behind it all, he seems to think it’s his own fault that he was manipulated, lied to, and abused. His self-loathing is so extreme that he imagines his earlier self, Li Xiangyi, to have died, and tries as much as possible to be nothing like that earlier persona. His repeated insistence that Li Xiangyi and Li Lianhua are NOT the same person is reminiscent of the fragmentary sense of self that comes with more extreme trauma, like Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) or Other-Specified Dissociative Disorder (OSDD), where traumatic experiences are so painful that people form different alters, or differentiated self-states, that can have different names and skills and memories and identities. 

Di Feisheng doesn’t have the self-hatred or guilt that LLH does, and it seems like he tries to skip over questions of self worth, blame, or hatred by focusing exclusively on staying true to his code of ethics he’s developed for himself and focusing on gaining the strength necessary to fight for his freedom from mind control and the Di Fortress. But even though he’s kept his Di name, kept his goals the same since escaping Di Fortress, and hasn’t tried to separate himself from his trauma the way LLH did with LXY, he’s even more willing than LLH to take on different identities: it’s literally one of his martial arts skills. The Bone Constriction Skill lets him become someone else for a time, whether that’s a child or Shi Hun. It fits well with his willingness to be whoever he needs to be to accomplish his goals: he’s perfectly willing to be seen as a heartless villain if it lets him protect LLH, and he’s willing to flirt with and pretend to be jealous of JLQ to get information from her, and he’s willing to be LLH’s a-Fei, both with and without his memories.

Interruptions in Consciousness (Amnesia and nightmares for Everyone): LLH and DFS both have nightmares and flashbacks/memories of traumatic events, and as mentioned above, both have interesting hints of having fragmented/fluid senses of self. They both also dissociate, or separate themselves from the present when dealing with traumatic things:  LLH spaces out and gets stuck in his past memories about SGD when talking to FDB after burying SGD, and DFS dissociates from physical pain so as not to make noise both after he’s been stabbed and poisoned with Wuxin Huai and again when JLQ is torturing him in her water dungeon.

They both also have dissociative amnesia that takes away trauma memories, although one is from a poisonous incense plus the magic of qi macgyvering:  LLH forgot the existence of his older brother who died in front of him, and DFS as a-Fei had just about all of his memories (except a few of killing as a child) taken away. Amnesia is a huge part of cPTSD, because it’s the brain’s way of trying to protect you from truths that you might not survive. It can manifest as blocking out one single traumatic event, a bunch of thematically or temporally linked traumatic events, a skill set related to the trauma, or, in the case of something like DID or OSDD, just about everything. It’s endlessly fascinating to me that the show gives us one example of definite traumatic amnesia through LLH, and then seems to almost transform the experience of having DID and being a new part and finding yourself with a new name and very little else into an exaggerated fantasy setting (interestingly, people often report experiencing debilitating headaches when they try to regain memories behind the amnesia barrier). I doubt this is what they were actually going for, since DID is almost universally portrayed incorrectly and offensively in media (one of the alters is almost always portrayed as a serial killer, but that’s a rant for another day), but the different names and the presence of amnesia with LLH made it a fascinating enough parallel that I had to mention it.

 Problems with Emotional Regulation (Lashing in vs. lashing out): Li Xiangyi and Di Feisheng are polar opposites when it comes to struggles with emotional regulation: whereas LXY turns his anger inward, directing it all toward self-hate in what’s often called a “toxic shame spiral,” both after the donghai battle and after he finds out about SGD’s role in his shifu’s death, DFS lashes out physically at those who have harmed him, usually via choking people, although he is usually exerting an impressive amount of control over his emotions and strength. To put in perspective just how different their emotional strategies are and how much effort DFS puts into emotional regulation, compare how much more calm he is than LLH during any revelation of past betrayal or painful information, any scene where they confront the people who have abused them, or any scene where they learn they’ve been wrong about something big; LLH is most likely having an emotional flashback (re-experiencing the emotions from the earlier traumas) and DFS is probably compartmentalizing them or dissociating from them to process later/never so he can stay semi-functional and not show a potential opponent a weak spot. 

NOTE: This means that DFS is loooong overdue for a very dramatic breakdown when it eventually all catches up to him and he can’t distract himself from it anymore.

Perceptions of Perpetrators: In this way only, Di Feisheng has one advantage: he knows the head of Di Fortress is a cruel, abusive tyrant. While he clearly still fears him, even as a physically strong adult (he has nightmares, flashbacks, and dedicates his life to being free from him, which means he still to some extent feels young, small, and helpless when he thinks of him), DFS knows that he hates him and wants to be free of him. This is probably part of why he’s spared some of the self-hatred LLH experiences: he knows he didn’t deserve the abuse because seeing it happen to other children means he knows the abuse wasn’t a personal reflection on him. It does, however, motivate him to want to be stronger and invulnerable so as to never be helpless again, and that obsession is what drives him to have a single-minded focus on reaching the pinnacle of the jianghu.  

It’s so much more complicated for Li Lianhua (and for a more detailed analysis, check out this meta): the childhood perpetrators were manifold–a slew of bandits, whichever children and adults on the street would abuse him for existing and being poor–it probably felt like life itself was to blame. It’s no wonder that when his shifu and shiniang took him in, they were the ultimate rescuers whom he hero-worshipped, so when he felt he made a mistake and his life fell apart, he blamed himself: at least there would be someone to blame that way and something he could do about it (try to kill his past self and hate everything about him). It’s also very telling that LLH doesn’t blame JLQ or YBQ all that much when he learns they poisoned him, and that he’s more angry that SGD murdered their shifu than he is that SGD set him up, hated him, and was the real mastermind behind everything he had blamed himself for; he struggles to stay angry at people who harm him, and would rather blame and hate himself for being tricked than hate the person who tricked him. So, whereas DFS tries to destroy the people who abused him, LLH tries to destroy himself.

So my fic "Back from the Future: Episode IV" has as part of its third act a lot of focus on Tatooine slave culture and slave liberation. I have, in fact, tagged my entire fic with the tag "slavery" and the tag "Tatooine Slave Culture" and "Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder - PTSD". Despite this, for some reason, I still occasionally get comments on this fic telling me I need MORE warnings because people find the depiction of Tatooine slavery shocking. Somehow they are unprepared for what happens and these readers think I owe them additional warnings.

Such comments leave me baffled.

What do people think I mean when I include the tag "slavery" and the tag "Tatooine Slave Culture"? I think these tags are pretty clear. Under slavery people suffered. People died. People were abused and treated horrifically. Families were ripped apart. Modern day slavery still exists. And then when we speak of Tatooine specifically? Anakin in Episode I of Star Wars tells us that slaves are implanted with detonators and they blow people up who try and escape. In Episode VI of Star Wars Jabba feeds people alive to his pet rancor and then executes people via a sarlaac. These are not spoilers. These are not head canons. This is canon. This is known. It shouldn't require forewarning when writing about Tatooine and slavery that the brutality of slavery will be a subject covered in a story and all that entails, which is NOT pretty.

I don't think I need to add more warnings at the beginning of every chapter. I think the tags I put on the entire fic are very clear. Tagging is a great function of AO3 and I have always striven to tag responsibly. I only add chapter warnings if it is for something I have NOT tagged for the entire story.

Am I missing something when it comes to tagging fanfic? Some new standard? Are people just not reading tags anymore before they start to read a fic?

We have seen what the Creepypasta Squad were up to, so it is about time we explained where the JR trio has gone.

As I explained in earlier one-shots, Dream is a lawyer but as a workaholic he decided that he was not suffering enough and is also a teacher.

Ink and Finch are both students of Dream even though Ink and Dream see each other as friends more than anything, Ink is in his latest year.

Synopsis: Dream ignored the commotion created by the topic and continued. “I will send you all the details about the mock trial and the fake evidence that would be used during it. Only a handful of you would be able to participate and I trust that you will settle this matter among yourselves.”

Then, he glanced at Finch with a hint of worry. “Also, you are totally entitled to choose not to participate if you feel strongly about the topic.”

“We’ll be having a mock trial next week.” Dream announced at the end of the class, gathering his papers. “The topic would be quite the difficult subject as it involves modern slavery.”

A few groaned at that. “What?! That is the most complex one! There are so many topics, of all of them, why this one?”

Finch, however, seemed to be glued to his words; hands curled into fists that rested on the desk as he stared into the teacher. He had been waiting for this, taking this kind of case was why he went for a law degree in the first place.

He noticed his fist shaking and he frowned at them, holding one with the other.

That is what he was here for, he could take it just fine.

Dream ignored the commotion created by the topic and continued. “I will send you all the details about the mock trial and the fake evidence that would be used during it. Only a handful of you would be able to participate and I trust that you will settle this matter among yourselves.”

He turned back toward the rest of the class, the student pretending not to have noticed the staring. “If you have any questions, you are free to ask me while I’m still here, we have quite some time before the bell rings.”

Used to Finch always bombarding the professor with questions, the other students crossed their arms, waiting for Dream’s usual ‘Yes, Finch?’

However, it never came.

“Very well, you are free to leave then.” Dream dismissed them, a handful of people turning a wide-eyed face toward Finch, who did his best to ignore the stares.

It was fine, perfectly fine.

Finch was just on his way to get lunch when he suddenly overheard a conversation between other students. “Professor Von Licht’s comment was definitely directed at Finch.” One of them stated with disdain, causing Finch to freeze.

“Well, duh!” The other one replied, rolling their eyes. “He was definitely looking at him when he said that. Cannot see the point by the way, it is just a mock trial, it’s no big deal. Does he think he is some sort of baby or something?”

“I think it is more because Professor von Licht so obviously favors Finch. I mean seriously, he might as well be his secret child or some shit at this point!” Said one stood around the corner, hidden as he held onto his wallet a bit tighter.

“Yeah, he is definitely showing bias toward him. Hey, do you think that is why he has such good grades?”

“Now that you say it, yes! I knew that no one could get those without cheating in some type of way.” Finch was so busy listening to their conversation that he did not even notice a figure walking past him straight toward the group.

“Could you guys shut the fuck up?” A wild Ink butted in, looking annoyed. “I was trying to enjoy my lunch. Besides, I don’t think you should be talking shit about people behind their back, that’s a coward move.”

One of the students narrowed their eyes on him. “It’s none of your business. Who are you anyway?”

“You guys are talking louder than a wailing toddler so yes; it is my business. If you didn’t want anyone to butt in, then maybe you should have considered lowering your voice.” Ink rolled his eyes, one of his fists resting on his hip. “As for who I am, someone better, obviously.”

The man of the group raised his voice. “Why you--”

Before one of his companions grabbed his arm, hissing. “Stop it, Nathaniel.” She glanced back at the shorter one. “It’s Ink.”

Realization seemed to creep up and he finally gritted his teeth, letting out an aggressive ‘whatever!’ before his group walked away.

Finch flinched as the older man snapped his fingers in front of his face. “Oh uh, yes? Do you need anything?”

“Are you that Finch guy they were talking about?” He asked, crossing his arms around his chest, a sketchbook tucked under his elbow.

“I am.” He confirmed, looking down, slightly awkward.

“Next time you hear them talking shit, you should punt them in the face. Would save me the effort of shutting them up myself.” Was all he said before he walked away, not leaving Finch the time to respond.

Well, that was... an interesting encounter.

Today was the day.

Finch walked to the establishment as he usually would, additional bags under his eyes. He was not one with healthy sleeping habits to begin with but the anxiety excitement of seeing the sun rise today was just one additional factor as to why he had to ignore sleep.

After some convincing with his classmates, he managed to get the role of the plaintiff, the role he would hopefully be playing in the future when he graduated.

The only difference is that this time, there would be real victims counting on him to get them out of here.

He shook his head to get the thought out of his head before stepping into the auditorium.

Since it was quite early, Finch was not surprised to see that no one had arrived yet. After all, he did always make a point to be in class at least twenty minutes before the actual class started while the others would be busy trying to avoid looking at the clock.

He could not really blame them though, some of them looked like they were forced to be here.

Normally, the empty room would have given him peace of mind, the calm atmosphere working wonders on his soul. But today, it seemed like it was doing the opposite.

He tapped his finger onto the bar stool, hoping to distract himself from his tight chest with the noise. Seeing that it did little to relieve him, he opened his bag and took out the files that the professor had sent them all about the trial they would be playing for.

He swept his gaze over the details for the millionth time, muttering the information under his breath before they could be taken in by his irises. He had already memorized the whole case.

That meant he was prepared for it academically.

Finch just hoped that his mental state would follow that example.

“Well damn, you really are a mini Teach.” A voice interrupted his train of thoughts, jolting him away from his daydreaming. He looked around him, but the room was as empty as he had noticed before.

He frowned. “Who is there?”

“Look up, loser.” Looking up he did, and Finch almost choked on air as he recognized the man from before hanging by his legs from the lights.

“What the—How did you even--” Finch stumbled on his words before he shook his head, gaining back his composure. “You should get down from there, you might fall.”

“Whatever.” He rolled his eyes before he jumped down, somehow making a perfect landing. He crossed his arms behind his head before he started walking away.

Again, Finch ended up all alone with this time even more questions than before.

Ha vaguely wondered if he should be used to this.

Before long, the bell rang, and students came flooding into the auditoriums. Most simply ignored Finch being there early, which had been the norm, before they all sat down in their usual seats.

It did not take long for most of them to notice the special arrangements in the middle of the room.

“Greetings everyone.” Dream walked into the room, causing most of the student body to stand up. The teacher smiled before quietly motioning for them to sit down. The first ten minutes of the class were spent like a regular one before Dream finally decided to start the mock trial.

“Have you all chosen the participants?” At the affirmative response he got, he walked toward what could be assumed to be the judge’s seat, sitting down on the chair.

“Can the plaintiff, the defendant and the jury take their seats then?” A few students stood up and walked over to the miniature courtroom, sitting down. Dream’s eyes held a glint of concern as he noticed Finch taking a seat, but it quickly disappeared to his usual stoic expression.

“We may begin then.” A religious silence swept over the room. Dream turned toward the student playing the baliff at his side, who nodded before turning toward the audience.

“Please rise.” The players stood up as requested. “The Court of the Second Judicial Circuit, Criminal Division, is now in session, the Honorable Judge Dream presiding.”

Dream smiled encouragingly.

“Do you solemnly, sincerely, and truly affirm and declare that you will conscientiously try the charges against the Defendant, and you will decide them according to the evidence. You will also not disclose anything about the Jury's deliberation other than as required by law.”

He should have been ready.

He should have been.

His hands were trembling on the table as they had entered the cross-examination stage of the trial.

“He said he would hit me if I didn’t cooperate.” His classmate stated before they suddenly began to blur, their figure overlapping with one much shorter than they were.

‘She’ looked over to a younger Dream, who was sitting across from ‘her’ in panic as ‘she’ desperately fought off the urge to cry. He gave ‘her’ an encouraging smile. ‘She’ took a deep breath, imagining ‘she’ was just speaking to Dream and counting ‘her’ story.

“So, I listened...” ‘Her’ voice shook but ‘she’ tried not to let it get to ‘her, gulping down before starting again. “But after I completed the task, he got mad at me and--”

‘She’ was starting to feel ‘herself’ back into that horrendous room, ‘she’ never wanted to go back there ever again. “And he took my eye-”

A desk slam made ‘her’ flinch as ‘she’ looked up toward the noise. ‘Her’ eyes widened as ‘she’ met the furious gaze of the man ‘she’ feared the most.

“You ungrateful brat!” He screamed, ‘her’ ears ringing. “You would have been on the streets if it weren’t for me!” He leaped toward ‘her’ earning a terrified scream from the child. The officers who have been stationed there jumped into action, their hands in the air as they tried to reason with the furious man.

Meanwhile, the baliff called order to the court on top of the chaos, Dream having rushed to Finch’s side to calm ‘her’ down.

“Hey Finch, why did you not object there? That was totally a hearsay!” The person next to him exclaimed, looking annoyed. At the lack of a response from the other, they turned around, only to notice his violent shaking and irregular breaths. “Uh Finch? Are you all right, dude?”

Dream took notice of that, and his eyes hardened as he stood up from the judge’s seat. “Everyone, please stay in your seat. I will be right back.” He walked over to Finch and led him away under the questioning looks of his classmates.

‘She’ sniffled as ‘she’ held onto Dream’s hand for dear life, wiping at ‘her’ tears as the noise gradually subsided. While he might have been out of view and reach now, ‘she’ could still hear him threatening to kill ‘her’ in ‘her’ head.

‘Her’ missing eye felt like it was burning.

‘Her’ breath sped up as ‘her’ sobs got louder, ‘her’ ears ringing again with the sound of ‘her’ own screams destroying ‘her’ earbuds as ‘she’ remembered getting pinned to the ground, a figure growling as sharp pain made itself known through ‘her ‘eye.

‘She’ was going to die here.

“...ch!”

‘She’ could feel the darkness staring into ‘her’, ready to swallow ‘her’ whole and leave nothing behind.

“...Inch!”

It hurt, it hurt so--

“Finch!”

He jolted awake, vision blurry and breathing haggard. Meeting Dream’s concerned eyes, he tried to say something only for his voice to be caught in his throat, choking as he felt his head spinning from the lack of oxygen.

“Finch, I need you to copy what I’m doing, alright?” Finch nodded to show he was paying attention and Dream began to inhale exaggeratingly before holding his breath. Dream kept going for a while, waiting for Finch to follow his lead.

It was tough at the beginning, but he eventually calmed down enough to breathe properly, sniffing ever so slightly. The older one handed him a tissue and he gladly accepted it, wiping at the tears he had not noticed had the time to fall.

He sucked in a deep breath before he lowered his head. “I’m sorry.” He choked out after a few tries, almost getting sent right back to bawling town.

Dream frowned. “What are you sorry for?”

“I’ve ruined the trial.” He said, his shoulders slumping. “I’m sorry sir, I don’t know why I’m like this.”

Dream shook his head before he cupped Finch’s cheek and made him look toward him. “The only person you need to apologize to is yourself for not respecting your own boundaries.”

He opened his mouth to protest. “But-”

“I know that helping others out of forced labor is your final goal.” Dream declared, cutting him off. “It is quite a noble one and I do encourage you to pursue it. However, there is no way you can help anyone lost at sea when you are drowning yourself.”

Finch stayed silent at that before he looked down again. “Am I... ever going to ready to do this?” Uncertainty was laced in his voice.

“Yes.” Dream responded with confidence. “You will, but first you’re going to need to help yourself first.”

“Are you sure? I mean today was a disa--” Dream held up one of his hands and he cut himself off again.

“We have hundreds of students in the same class, and you still have a few years before you finish your studies.” He stood up, extending a hand to help Finch up too. He did not even notice they were sitting in the first place. “There would be other mock trials, and there would be plenty more opportunities for you to practice.”

Finch took his hand and stood up as well.

“But you can only take advantage of said opportunities if you are healed enough to. I might sound like a hypocrite, but health must be your priority and that includes mental health as well.” Finch nodded.

“I understand.” Dream smiled in response.

“Very well, in that case, let us go back. I would also have to ask you to step down from this mock trial for now and let someone else do it.”

Finch wanted to protest but it was for the best, so he nodded anyway.

“I’m sorry...” ‘She’ sobbed against Dream’s chest, clutching onto the front of his shirt. The latter petted ‘her’ head as ‘she’ buried ‘herself’ in his embrace.

“There’s nothing you need to be sorry for.” He attempted to soothe ‘her,’ voice gentle. “You did the right thing; you were very brave to come testify yourself. I am proud of you Finch.”

X-Files Scully Trauma Responses: Fight, Flight, Freeze, or Fawn?

Picking up from this post about Mulder, we have Scully's turn!

There are four main trauma responses: Fight, Flight, Freeze, and Fawn (taken from the book Complex CPTSD: From Surviving to Thriving by Pete Walker-- see Disclaimers section below for info.) In short: Fight Types respond to stress with physical intimidation or verbal bullying; Flight Types run as far as they can from danger (physically or metaphorically), fleeing or distracting their minds with obsessive-compulsive work; Freeze Types disassociate, seeing fight and flight as futile and becoming numb to life; and Fawn Types try to win favor from their oppressor, leaning co-dependently on others.

Scully's Primary Trauma Response Type

Flight Types

"A Flight response is triggered when a person responds to a perceived threat by fleeing; or, symbolically, by launching into hyperactivity. .... Extreme Flight types are like machines with a switch stuck in the 'on' position. They are obsessively and compulsively driven by the unconscious belief that perfection will make them safe and loveable. They rush to achieve. They rush as much in thought in action, compulsion."

Beyond the Sea explored the breadth of Scully's Flight Type Trauma Response: Scully tried to avoid the pain of her father's death by distracting herself with work before the funeral; but was forced to sit in her feelings of inadequacy and beg for reassurance of his fatherly pride from her mother. "Was he at all proud of me?" is the backbone of her type, just as it was in relation to her partnership with Mulder, her daughterly duties to Maggie, her sisterly duties to Bill, and her professional duties as a medical doctor, Academy instructor, and field agent. Furthermore, this episode laid the groundwork for the infamous hallway scene in Fight the Future. As Rob Bowman stated: "‘I need you, I need you.’ That’s a theme of the movie – Mulder needs Scully. And never before has he come to that understanding quite so strongly as he does in this story. So she’s running because she’s afraid that he’s going to talk her out of it, and so the best thing she can do is hit the elevator button and go, go, go."

Classic Flight Type, classic.

(An interesting note: As stated above, Scully's "machine" is stuck in the "on" position-- the exact opposite of Mulder's type, which is stuck in the "off" position. Scully's traumatic response is to bury herself in obsessive-compulsive disordered behavior to distract from the lack of control she has over her life--finding refuge in long-working hours or needlessly consuming chores-- after her father's death, Emily's death, Mulder's disappearance and death, her mother's death, her son's fake death, etc. While Scully seeks out tasks, people, and duties from life (a.k.a. whether that be her on-the-clock job or extra busywork on weekends and holidays), Mulder retreats from people during his traumatic responses, becoming reclusive and alienated, dungeonIng himself away from life in his basement or leather couch.)

But what if her primary trauma response isn't working fast enough to combat fear or danger? In this case, Scully will develop a secondary trauma response, the polar opposite of her dominant one:

Flight-Fawn Types

Flight-Fawn Types (also known as Super Nurses, ironically) turn the obsessive-compulsive workaholism of the Flight Type into the bend-over-backwards self-imposed slavery of the Fawn Type. As Pete Walker explains: "The Fawn-Flight Type is the most typically seen in the busy-holic parent, nurse, or administrative assistant who works from dawn until bedtime providing for the needs of the house, the hospital, or company. He" [she] "compulsively takes care of everyone else's needs with hardly a gesture towards his own. The Fawn-Flight is sometimes a misguided Mother Theresa-type who escapes the pain of her self-abandonment by seeing herself as the perfect, selfless caregiver. She further distances herself from her own pain by obsessively-compulsively rushing from one person in need to another. Some Fawn-Flight clients become OCD-like clean-aholics."

As we know, Scully fashions herself as Mulder's partner, primary caretaker, and right-hand Starbuck, while also acting as his translator, justifier, and report writer to the higher ups.

When Mulder messes up in all areas of his life, she flies in to patch him up and cover for him. This, of course, is fulfilling... but it's also distracting, purposefully so. Her Flight-Fawn Response also emerges its head whenever she tries to placate her brother Bill: cut off from Flight, she will utilize Fawn-- letting him ramble, pushing back only a little while pleading for understanding-- before ultimately volleying back to Flight whenever he gives her enough room to squeeze by and make her escape. Even on her last legs during the cancer arc, Scully still got swept up into verifying Mulder's quest against her previously expressed wishes--Flight-Fawn in full effect.

Why Scully Is Not Primarily Fight, Freeze, or Fawn

Fight Types

"A Fight response is triggered when a person suddenly responds aggressively to something threatening. ...Fight Types are unconsciously driven by the belief that power and control can create safety, assuage abandonment, and secure love...." Fight Types often become bullies or narcissists to their loved ones as well as their enemies if left unchecked. At their worst, they can become demanding, demeaning, and punishing because they equate strength as power exerted to weaken a threat. Fight is the first Trauma Response all humans develop; and if it's used effectively, Fight Responders stick to this "effective" method rather than trying out others (the second Flight, third Freeze, or fourth Fawn.) This translates to a bitter outlook on the world, always suspicioning the motives of others in cruel or judgmental ways. Severely traumatized Flight Types usually grew up in homes where they had to fight back against physical abuse or protect others from it. Dana Scully, while aggressive and cantankerous in the face of sniveling injustice, never uses her anger as a way to control or manipulate others; nor does she see other humans as self-interested threats.

Freeze Types

"A Freeze Response is triggered when a person, realizing resistance is futile, gives up, numbs out into dissociation, and/or collapses, as if accepting the inevitability of being hurt…. The Freeze Response, also known as the Camouflage Response, also triggers a survivor into hiding, isolating, and avoiding human contact. The Freeze Type can be so frozen in the retreat mode that is seems as if their "Starter” button is stuck in the “off” position. While all 4 F Types commonly suffer from social anxiety as well, Freeze Types typically take a great deal more refuge in solitude." These Types have learned from a young age that fighting back will only get you punished and that fleeing will only get you reprimanded; so, they collapse in on themselves instead. Dana Scully wields her independent agency freely and often, so this is definitely not her primary Type.

Fawn Types

"Fawn response is triggered when a person responds to threat by trying to be pleasing or helpful in order to appease and forestall an attacker.... Fawn Types seek safety by merging with the wishes, needs, and demands of others. They act as if they believe that the price of admission to any relationship is the forfeiture of all their needs, rights, preferences, and boundaries. The disenfranchisement of the Fawn Type begins in childhood... learns early that a modicum of safety and attachment can be gained by becoming the helpful and compliant servant of... exploitive parents." (As an aside, this type is formed from having at least one narcissistic parent who beat wore down the first natural human response-- Fight-- the second response-- Flight-- and the third response-- Freeze-- until all that is left is Fawn.) Dana Scully has never kowtowed or cheaply sold her self-respect to appease to others; and has only ever dipped into the Fawn Response as a capitulation or bargaining tool, hence why it is her secondary and not primary response.

Ethan's Diary

February 6th, 2021 Mia and I had another fight. I accidentally mentioned what happened there three years ago and she blew up at me. We finally settled down in our new life in Europe and can bring Rose up properly. But... I still feel like a part of me is trapped in that hell hole back in Louisiana.

I know Mia doesn't like to talk about it, but can we really just forget everything and pretend it didn't happen? Shouldn't we face what happened there so we can live our lives with Rose without it hanging over our heads? We owe her that much at least... I know Mia knows this too. She wouldn't have exploded like that at the hospital if she didn't care.

Mia in the bakers incident report (obligitory it should have been part of basic game and it should have had a moment of BSAA confirming they got all information about the connections she could give them) says she wants "to forget everything"

its normal to shy away from something painful, she spent 3 years in padded cell thinking of everything (when not in Evie La La Land). there is also a element of how her mold infection affected her after being treated by the BSAA. I got asked by @mushroomwithsomeink some time ago if Mia has abanonment issues and to an extent she does (the answer was not very good). Mia was part of a hive mind for years she knew where Jack was and was probably aware of everything else happening around her (all because of her not being able to convince Evie to stop or have the guts to break out the murder kit). The thought that the BSAA apparently let them live but without setting them up with therapists? (though the BSAA are the same people who let Chris still recovering from amnesia and binge drinking into the field- also plugging the fanfic catch me floating circles in fish bowl)

random thing as I was tying "forget everything" I had a thought about Riley Flynn from Midnight Mass (and ended up looking for quotes from the show and interesting ones will be under the read more- give them a look and see why i thought of Mia when i reread these)

Both Mia and Ethan have CPTSD I have no real thoughts what i shared is honestly explanation enough

Complex PTSD - Post-traumatic stress disorder

You may have complex post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) if you have some of the symptoms of PTSD, and also have problems with managing your emotions and having relationships.

Symptoms of complex PTSD

The symptoms of complex PTSD are similar to symptoms of PTSD, but may also include:

feelings of worthlessness, shame and guilt

problems controlling your emotions

finding it hard to feel connected with other people

relationship problems, like having trouble keeping friends and partners

Causes of complex PTSD

Complex PTSD may be caused by experiencing recurring or long-term traumatic events, for example:

childhood abuse or neglect; domestic violence; sexual abuse

torture, sex trafficking, or slavery; war

You may also be more likely to develop complex PTSD if:

you experienced trauma at a young age

you were harmed by someone close to you who you trusted

you were unable to escape the trauma

treatment for PTSD and CPTSD is hard and when the other person your primary support is also dealing with it? that is even worse honestly there is a thing called secondary trauma

from mind: 'Secondary' means that although the original (primary) trauma happened to someone else, the impact it's having in your life is traumatic for you. It doesn't mean it's any less significant than any other kind of PTSD, or any easier to deal with. Our page for friends and family has some tips on looking after yourself.

See, that's the part I cannot square. Because you're right, there is so much suffering in the world. So much. And then there's this higher power. This higher power who could erase all that pain, just wave his hand and make it all go away, but doesn't? No. No thank you. The worst part is that it lets all the rest of us off the hook. We can watch so many people just slip into these bottomless pits of awful and we can stand it. We can tolerate it because we say things like, "God works in mysterious ways." Like there's a plan? Like something good's going to come out of it? Nothing good came out of my drinking. Nothing good came out of me killing that poor girl. Nothing good came out of Joe Collie's drinking. And not a single good thing comes out of Leeza never being able to walk again. Nothing good came out of a metric ton of crude oil filling up the bay. And the only thing, the only fucking things that lets people stand by, watching all this suffering, doing nothing, doing fucking nothing, is the idea that suffering can be a gift from God. What a monstrous idea, Father.

Post Traumatic Slavery Disorder is the sum total of the emotional and psychological impact of our abduction and separation from Africa, slavery, Jim Crow, the crushing of the Black American Revolution (starting with the deportation of Marcus Garvey and ending with the destruction of the Black Panther Party), the Black indoctrination in a system of white values, beliefs and supremacy, and the establishment of an economic caste system.

These experiences have all created deep, intense feelings of fear, anger, and self-hatred amongst African-Americans, resulting in self destructive psychosis. The suicidal, self-destructive nature that many Africans and African-Americans suffer from can be impossible to diagnose.

Resistance and denial create within us powerful psychological barriers that block our ability to honestly assess our thinking errors. As you read this, ask yourself if you indeed are resisting truths that lay at your core. It is perfectly normal to resist looking into the dark shadows of your subconscious, but this must be done if we are to heal our collective self esteem and break the psychological chains that have been forged for us, and that keeps us in bondage today.

Until we do so, all the gun programs, AIDS walks, Black conscious lectures, mass movements, and Stop The Violence concerts in the world will have a minimal effect. Until we truly examine the causes and effects of PTSD, we as a community – and you as an individual – may be subconsciously programmed for racial, financial, physical, cultural, and psycho-sexual forms of self destruction.

As a Reaper, Luis specializes in slaying demons, though his abilities are somewhat unique compared to the other Reapers. Luis often finds himself in dangerous situations, slaying demonkin hordes nearly every day to protect the citizens of the World of Day. Luis suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder caused by a painful youth in slavery, and has his service dog, Winter, to aid him with panic attacks and nightmares.

Around half a million female North Koreans, some as young as 12, are hiding in border regions of China, according to a new report by an international human rights law firm Global Rights Compliance. Activists warn that women and girls remain at critical risk of exploitation even after fleeing their homeland.

Working with multiple NGOs and human rights organizations to comply evidence and testimony from refugees, Global Rights Compliance found over 4,340 documented cases of human trafficking of North Korean women from China in the last decade and at least 80,000 reported abuses of human rights. 

'Staggered and moved' 

Sofia Evangelou, the law firm's lead legal advisor on North Korean human rights and global rights compliance, said many accounts are harrowing to read.

"I have read some of the testimony and I find myself staggered and very moved at what these women have gone through," Evangelou told DW. 

"Many of these women, even after they have reached safety in South Korea, say they are still suffering from feelings of anxiety, of shame, or post-traumatic stress disorder," she said.

"Each of these women has had a different experience and is coping with it in their own way, but there is a clear pattern of women suffering physically, emotionally and psychologically as a result of their experiences."

The report states the women are not safe even after completing the perilous journey over North Korea's heavily fortified border with China — where Pyongyang has introduced a shoot-to-kill order for anyone suspected of attempting to flee the country.

They are still forced to hide after reaching the so-called "Red Zone" in eastern China, as the Chinese authorities hunt defectors before sending them back to the North. Reports suggest that first-time escapees can get away with a spell in one of the North's brutal prisons, although the punishment for repeat offenders can be far more serious, including execution.  

Lockdowns introduced on the Chinese side of the border to try to halt the spread of the coronavirus has made the situation even more risky. Typically, the defectors have little money, no access to food and cannot continue their journey to safety in a third country. 

Data gathered from defectors by groups such as the Database Center for North Korean Human Rights and the Transitional Justice Working Group indicates that as many as 80% of female North Korean refugees fall into the hands of people traffickers and are sold into sex trade, which is estimated to generate more than $105 million (€97.5 million) a year for Chinese and North Korean organized crime networks.  

'Black hole' of silence around abuse

Within the Red Zone, women and girls are reportedly often subjected to systematic rape, sexual slavery, forced marriage, unwanted pregnancy, forced labor and cybersex trafficking. Such mistreatment has become "normalized” in the region, the report claims, with women beaten in public and being sold for as little as a few hundred dollars.  

"I was sold to a Han Chinese living in Yanbian," one woman said in her testimony, according to the report. "We lived together for one year and we couldn't have a child, so he beat me. He kicked me. He kicked my head a lot." 

A woman who was caught and sent to a prison in North Korea witnessed another prisoner, who was concealing her pregnancy, collapse while she was performing hard labor collecting rocks from a river. She drowned, but when guards realized she had been pregnant they stripped all the other female inmates naked to check for more hidden pregnancies. They then carried out immediate forced abortions, according to the account gathered by the activists.

"A black hole of information currently exists around China's Red Zone, which means that many more North Korean women and girls are falling victim to China's sex slave industry," said Evangelou. "The​​ current situation leaves North Korean women and girls exposed to the stark reality of either being sold into a lifetime of sexual and mental abuse, slavery, forced labor, or reaching freedom."

Evangelou urged the end of the "pandemic of international silence" on the issue.

"The illegal sexual slavery of women and girls will not stop until a ​concerted ​international effort is mobilized," she added. "The international community can no longer turn a blind eye to the atrocities being committed against women and children, fleeing for their lives and — in too many cases — those of their unborn children." 

Seoul pushing for more accountability

Meanwhile, the government of South Korea seems to be growing more interested in Pyongyang's human rights violations and holding the leaders of the isolated state accountable.

Park Jung-won, a professor of international Law at Dankook University, said the previous South Korean administration of President Moon Jae-in was "silent on the situation around human rights abuses in the North," but that tides are shifting under President Yoon Suk-yeol. 

"There has been a significant change in the attitude of the government and South Korea this month jointly sponsored a United Nations draft resolution on human rights in the North, for the first time in five years," he said, pointing out that Yoon has also appointed a new ambassador to promote human rights in North Korea.

"This is a complete change from before and a very positive thing for human rights in the North," he said. "I am hopeful that this government will continue to push on this matter, raising questions at the UN and other international forums to increase the pressure on Pyongyang."

The pressure from Seoul will "enable the international community to take more concrete action to respond to these terrible human rights abuses in the North and this very dangerous border zone," Park added.
