Investing 101

Part 4 of ?

What to Buy

I've been procrastinating this post because I have a broker who provides buying/selling recommendations to me as I'm not an expert. Having said that, I can provide some information.

The first decision to make is whether to buy stocks or bonds. I explained the difference between the two in previous posts but I should add a caveat. Normally bonds are considered a safe but lower return investment to balance your portfolio and reduce risk. The moves by the Fed to control inflation however have raised interest rates on bonds to levels not seen in >40 years. For the first time in a long time, very safe bonds (ex. US Treasuries) are yielding more than equities and you can lock in those rates for a long time. Normally I'd advise a young person to avoid any bonds, but this is a strange time and some bonds would be a good investment for almost anyone. As with stocks, you can buy individual bonds or a bond fund.

What is a fund? Let's imagine that you want to own a basket of tech stocks (or bank stocks or consumer goods stocks, etc.). You could research various companies and make your purchases or you could buy a mutual fund. Mutual funds are actively managed investment pools with specific investment philosophies (ex. focused on tech stocks) - you purchase shares in the fund and the fund manager uses your money (and the $$ of other fund investors) to buy/sell shares in accordance with the philosophy/purpose of the fund. Actively managed means that there is a management team doing investment research and then buying and selling shares. Of course the management team costs money and they deduct their fee from the earnings pool prior to distributing the fund's earnings back to the owner/investors of the fund. Fund managers argue that their active management improves your earnings while lowering your risk. Detractors argue that management fees are too expensive and over the long run, investors can do better on their own (more on that later). Management fees aren't regulated (that I'm aware of) so investors have to be cautious - some funds have very expensive management fees while others are more frugal. Morningstar is a great resource for researching investments of all types, including funds.

An alternative to a Mutual Fund is an Index or Exchange Traded Fund. These funds are designed to mirror the composition and performance of an entire stock exchange (ex. NASDAQ). So if the NASDAQ goes up 10pts today, the related Index or Exchange traded fund will also go up 10pts. This is a low cost way to invest in the performance of the overall market. Many advisors recommend these investments for superior long term growth. These funds aren't actively managed by a human, but their low cost makes them a winner.

Speaking of humans, AI managed funds are increasingly a hot topic. I may own some of these funds and not even know it, but I'm not seeking AI management. In fact, automated trading can be problematic and cause 'flash crashes' for the market when every AI algorithm tries to sell at the time.

Target Date funds are another kind of mutual fund which is increasingly popular in 401Ks and 529 college savings plans. A target date fund is designed to manage risk and volatility with a specific life goal in mind. For example, you might establish a goal retirement date of 2040 and buy a Target Date fund for that year. The 2040 fund will automatically invest in higher risk/higher return equities in the first 20 years and gradually shift more of the portfolio to lower risk investments (like bonds) as your target date approaches.

Money market funds are a very low risk way to earn better returns on your emergency fund cash than allowing it to wallow in a bank savings account. A money market is a kind of mutual fund, but it owns very safe investments - the odds are very small that you'd lose money and instead you'll have a very liquid, safe investment that you can use in case of emergency.

What about individual stocks? Some investors follow the simple strategy of buying the stocks of companies whose products they know and admire. Ex, "I like my iPhone so I'm going to buy Apple stock." In >30 years of investing I have never purchased an individual stock. My rationale is that there is an entire industry of very smart people who do nothing but research and invest. The odds that I can outsmart them and pick a company which everyone else has undervalued are small. If I've read about it in the Wall Street Journal, so has everyone else and the opportunity to buy something cheap is long gone. In my opinion, buying individual stocks is like going to Vegas - of course you will hear stories of big winners, but in general the house (full time investment professionals) always wins. For a non-professional like me, the odds of selecting individual stocks and assembling a winning portfolio over the long term aren't in my favor.

I could be in a victorian era cafe, sipping milk tea with my OC while getting scolded by some mean people at work over pointless shit that has nothing to do with me. That’s next level neuro protection.

I just started playing Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes because if you and wow this game is both addictive and huge as fuck

I’m having a lot of fun tho!

Eyyy I'm so glad you're enjoying it! I've been playing it diligently for half a year now, and yeah it's a micro-transaction hell but I find the grind and satisfaction of completing the grind to be satisfying! It's also like, just the right amount of good daily procrastination game, where I can do most of my daily missions in a few minutes and don't need to invest hours of play if I don't want to.

I recently joined a new guild (I loved my old one, but wanted to join a guild more active members who at least matched my own activity level) and my enjoyment of the game has definitely increased!

Random tip: if you ever have any general questions about what to do or good teams or really anything, I highly recommend checking out the reddit! If you search for it, someone's definitely already answered it, and it's been a really helpful resource for me. You're of course welcome to ask me too, but i definitely don't consider myself an expert (and I'll probably just look it up on reddit myself tbh) ^ ^;

Does anyone else think that Max Patel has a way darker past than ewe are led to believe? Can you honestly and with all certainty tell me that this man isn’t holding onto the memories of a secret life before joining up with the RDA? I think not. While Max is indeed quite a friendly character (My fiancé went as far as to say he has “Brown Dad Energy” - Apparently, I have the same vibes 🤨), he just triggers something in the back of my head that just says “This man is hiding something from his past”

So this post is what I believe this mysterious path to be:

- Born and raised in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, Max was born to an engineer father and a neuroscientist mother. He quickly developed a passion for science, specifically neuroscience. From the time he was a child to a teenager, he was fascinated -borderline obsessed- with the human brain

- In the background, however, Max’s father was struggling to make ends meet. Don’t get me wrong he had integrity but it was harder and harder to ignore the gangs of thieves that wanted his expertise. You see, Max’s father was the engineer that developed the technology that allows for the Valkyrie to fly. This also means that Max’s father knew enough about the Valkyrie to supply these gangs with the whereabouts of smuggler’s spaces, to stash contraband and the like.

- Eventually, the gangs left Max’s father alone but not before setting there sights on another target. At this point in time, Research about Pandora and the ability Tsayhelu was just reaching the population and by extension, the criminal elements. This made every warlord, cartel leader and triad boss extremely giddy. With the ability to look into the minds of others, so much could be done to further their goals. Blackmail, espionage, interrogation - the list could go on, but these where the main ones.

- The gangs knew that they could lean on a more impressionable Max and get him to assist in developing the technology to make Tsayhelu work for them and their activities. It wasn’t hard - Max was smart but socially stunted, so when a group of peers took interest in him, he leapt at the opportunity.

- Eventually, Max realised that this gang wasn’t actually looking to be his friend. However, by that time it too late. Max had become an expert in Interrogation, combat and had developed the first prototype of the All Seeing Eye (The device used on Spider while captive by the RDA). Max had even made a name for himself as ‘The Dread Doctor’ (I’m sure with something like the All Seeing Eye at your disposal, you can guess why that title was appropriate)

- Soon enough, Max couldn’t handle the amount of deaths caused by his A.S.E. prototype & the amount he has caused on behalf of the gang. At this point in his life, Max had already met Grace Augustine. Grace was looking to headhunt his mother for the mission to Pandora, but she declined citing a need to remain and take care of her family.

- Grace had offered a way out for Max & not long after Max was accepted into University, the RDA shut down the gang and ‘destroyed’ Max’s prototype to prevent it from getting into anyone else’s hands. Within no time Max was away and studying to join Dr Augustine when she would journey to Pandora.

Obviously there is more to talk about with this backstory, but these are the broad strokes and im sure that people who read this have much better ideas to improve this idea. I hope you all liked this because it was a miracle that I remembered to write this, in all honesty. My procrastination has reached all new levels as we come closer to my Uni Exams.

Reaching New Heights of Productivity: Leveling Up Through the 7 Stages

Let's get real - who couldn't use way more productivity superpowers these days? We all have mad untapped potential when it comes to getting stuff done. But maximizing your effectiveness can feel impossible.

That's why you gotta shift your mindset! View your productivity skills as something you can always take to the next level. Build them continually through 7 advancing stages that I like to call:

Level 1 - Newbie

We all start as newbies! At this basic level, you finally create structures like daily to-do lists and calendar reminders to wrangle the chaos. But you still get derailed on the daily by distractions, while procrastination leaves you hustling down to the wire, leaving you pissed. Been there, my friend!

Level 2 - Put Together Beginner

Now you crush it by establishing routines to hold the line. But you overcommit to meaningless meetings and extras tasks that overload your schedule. Can't bring yourself to just say "NOPE"! And sticking firmly to your plans is quite hard when fires keep starting left and right! The struggle is real...

Level 3 - Grasshopper

Here is where major progress mounts defending against distractions. You finally block addicting social feeds and disable those pesky notifications to find your flow...

Level 4 - Efficient Expert

Now we're cookin'! You've gained mad skills knocking items off your daily to-do's quickly. Delegating tedious stuff, collaborating with your squad, and setting up automation like data collection has freed up mega time! But continuing adulting on those stretched out goals still needs some help...

Level 5 - Sharp Shooter

This is when you become stone cold eliminating distractions and hyper focused on big rocks priorities. You set goals with military precision following SMART models. Health regimens with smoothie cleanses, 7 minute workout apps, and vision board manifesting amp up your drive! Tons of progress, but more beast mode is possible!

Nae tapped nervously on the desk with jittery fingers as nae stared at the notification for a message that had just come in through nyr SocialHub's message center. From the icon, nae could tell it had been forwarded by nyr account on the Ghost Hunters For Hire network.

Nae was afraid to find out what nae would find when nae clicked it. Nae dithered and procrastinated for a few more seconds, turning nyr office chair into a slow spin, but when nae finally came back around to facing the desk in front of the screen again, nae knew nae had to click it.

It was a BF-PM from Maelvywin, which was a relief. SocialHub didn't yet allow you to distinguish between private messages sent by best friends, and other types of messages, but apparently they were working on it and hoped to release the update next month.

But, when nae clicked to open the message, nae was both disappointed – and relieved, on another level – that nyr friend was not just messaging to say hi or to update nym on her garden. No, Maelvywin had heard from another friend that they'd had trouble with ghosts two years ago, back when they first started appearing, and they'd gotten help from The Hartgraves, a pair of freelance experts in the supernatural who operated within a pretty big area, which included nyr house.

They were good at what they did, according to Maelvywin's friend, and they hadn't charged anything at all for their services once Kar (Maelvywin's friend) explained their rocky financial situation.

The Hartgraves had taken care of both of the ghosts that had started haunting their neighborhood, and had apparently made sure that no more hauntings would occur there. None had ever since, but, Maelvywin cautioned, that could just be random luck. No one knew how ghosts or hauntings worked yet.

Not officially, at least, nae thought to nymself. Nae'd heard rumors – as everyone had – that ghosts had been around for a lot longer than two years, but just so rarely that if they were reported, everyone just thought it was a hoax or a local legend that was just for fun.

(These rumors were always followed by scathing comments that there had been plenty of hauntings before 2065. It was just that they always happened in low-income communities where the majority of people were people of color, so none of the rich white people had given enough shits to acknowledge the problem, let alone do anything about it. These people always said it was no coincidence that the first “Official” ghost haunting had taken place in a rich white man's mansion.)

Nae wasn't sure what to think of the rumors, but nae trusted Maelvywin's judgement, and if she said she trusted Kar's judgement, nae was going to, too.

Maelvywin's message said she would send another once she'd found the Hartgrave's contact information for nym, since it changed depending on where they were at the time.

Knowing nae'd have to wait, nae grabbed nyr cup, and pushed backward away from the desk, trying to get the chair to roll as far as possible under its own momentum. When it rolled to a stop on the smooth wooden floor, nae used nyr good leg to push it further, aiming for the water cooler that, for some reason, nae'd decided to put on the far side of the room from where nae sat.

Then again, nae'd set up nyr office space before this mess with nyr knee began, so, though nae couldn't really remember, nae was pretty sure nae'd been thinking something along the lines of “it'll be good exercise for us to walk to the cooler and back during the day so we aren't sitting the whole time”.

Cool in theory, not so much in practice now that nae couldn't walk even a few steps without nyr knee buckling under nyr weight.

Rolling across the room in the office chair was inconvenient and time consuming, because the wheels didn't really want to spin freely, and nae had to push nymself backwards and hope nae didn't run into the water cooler.

But eventually nae made it, without knocking the cooler over, and refilled nyr travel mug to the top, drank enough that nyr mouth wasn't dry anymore, then filled the mug again.

And now came the more difficult part – getting back to the desk without spilling the water. Nae'd misplaced the lid at some point. Or maybe the ghost had stolen it. They seemed to enjoy taking nyr things.

Getting back to the desk took twice as long as leaving it, but nae eventually arrived, no water spilled, but nyr good leg – or maybe, nae should start saying 'better' leg – was starting to ache again, which meant the pain medication nae'd taken was starting to wear off.

Relying on nyr better leg to push nyr chair around nyr office wasn't the only way nae'd been leaning more weight on it than usual since nyr knee was hurt, and all of the added stress was taking its toll.

Nae'd been hoping that Maelvywin would have gotten back to nym by the time nae got back to the desk, but was disappointed to see that nyr inbox was still empty.

Less disappointing, though, was the absolutely adorable and hilarious picture that one of nyr other friends had forwarded to nyr SocialHub page of two kittens playfighting, with the picture taken at just the right moment so that their expressions were so emotive nae couldn't help but laugh out loud when nae saw it.

With it came a link to more “Verified Cute” (by people, nae was assured, who actually understood animal body language and wouldn't post pictures where animals were in danger or distress as though it was funny or heartwarming) animal pictures and videos.

Glancing once more at nyr inbox to check that it was still empty, nae decided to follow the link. Nae had time to kill, and nae might as well kill it having fun.

Nae reached for nyr mug to get another drink – and nyr hand met empty air. For a shocked moment, nae simply stared at the empty spot on nyr desk where nyr mug had been two seconds before. Nae'd seen it out of the corner of nyr eye.

And now it was gone. Vanished without a trace.

Nae closed nyr eyes and sighed out through nyr nose, trying to keep from screaming in frustration. That had been nyr last cup in the whole house. The ghost had already taken the rest of them. And had started taking the bowls, too.

Nae spent a minute doing breathing exercises, then resolutely opened nyr eyes again and clicked the link.

Hopefully Maelvywin would get back to nym soon with the contact information for The Hartgraves.

Otherwise nae was going to have to start buying bottled water.

seven sentence sunday (kind of)

tagged by @shortsighted-owl - thank you so much for thinking of me!! 🥺💜 here’s a little scene from the abuela-centric fic (that mostly lives in my head so far) where eddie learns to cook + plants a vegetable garden. (ps. i’m so very sorry but this is absolutely not seven sentences.)

“Look,” Eddie says, leveling a serious look across the table. “I need a normal, generic tomato. Nothing fancy, just something I can use for salsa or rice.”

“Generic.” Buck makes a wounded noise, presumably on behalf of tomatoes everywhere. “There’s no such thing as a generic tomato; they’re all special in their own way, and they all have unique flavor profiles and uses, and—”

“And,” Eddie cuts in, “they all taste the same to me.”

“A-ha,” Buck says, grinning slyly. “That just means you haven’t had the right kinds.”

And then he’s off, waxing poetic about a fruit. Actually, it’s culinarily a vegetable, says a voice in Eddie’s head that sounds a lot like Buck—probably because, surprise, Buck’s the one who’d dropped that fun fact earlier.

Eddie takes a sip of coffee to cover his smile. “Okay, fine. What does the tomato expert recommend for a total novice?”

“Well, romas are a classic for a reason. So, I – I guess those. But, c’mon, Eddie, expand your palate! Garden peach tomatoes are great in salads and salsas, sungolds are like candy, Cherokee purple heirlooms are so good on bagels with cream cheese...”

Bagels with cream cheese are one of the few things Eddie can reliably choke down in the morning; he would never dream of marring them with sliced tomatoes. Still, like a man possessed, he says, “Come with me.”

“Yes,” Buck says immediately. “Wait, what? Where? When?”

“When I pick out the tomatoes. Come with me.”

And Buck? He beams.

Take a break!

You already know that taking a break is essential to reducing stress and preventing burnout. But if you’re like me, you likely take all of your breaks at your desk. If your workplace is the usual kind, that means that your supervisor or a colleague nearly always walks up behind you when you’re reading your email or social media or chatting with someone. So don’t just take a break when you need to breathe (but do that too!). Define your break.

If you work someplace sane, then they likely don’t care about your breaks if you get all of your work done in a timely fashion. One of my coworkers (now retired), an extraordinary educator who is an expert on pedagogies that actually work, pointed out that psychological research shows that procrastination can help get the work done better. https://professional.dce.harvard.edu/blog/the-perks-of-procrastination/

Not everything can succeed when you’re procrastinating. If someone can’t do their work without your help, that’s not something to put off. If you have a defined due date, that’s not something you can put off either -- it affects your team, your company, and the people waiting for the finished product. But if you’re working on a project and brainstorming isn’t helping, it’s time to take a break that will refresh you. But try not to do it at your desk, and set expectations for yourself and your colleagues as to when you’ll be back.

Most supervisors and colleagues take breaks at their desks as well, and it’s even expected if it’s not extreme and doesn’t interfere with work. It does, however, mean that your break is likely to be interrupted, especially if you’re an office manager or other administrative professional, and even more so if you’re entry-level. Not only that, but most good administrative professionals are only noticed when something breaks. So you need to be obvious about when you are and are not doing work. The last thing you want is a complaint that you’re never available or always on your phone or reading social media. (If your job involves social media, you need to be even more obvious about the difference between personal and work times.)

If you’re working remotely, it’s very easy to take a break when you need to, but equally difficult for your supervisor or colleagues to tell if you’re working at all. Hopefully your office is using a communication system like Slack or Microsoft Teams. Set your status to “on break” when you’re on break, and put it back to “available” when you’re back. You never want to have someone looking for you and not being able to find you at all.

Here are some things I do:

Since I work part-time, I arranged with my supervisor to take a long lunch on remote days so that I would be available at the beginning and end of everyone else’s workday. I also take my phone with me and answer Teams messages with one or two sentences; these sentences might include “I’m at lunch, I’ll check back with you in an hour” or “oh, you can find that in the such-and-so server folder” or “that’s an emergency, give me a second to get back to my desk.”

At the office, however, I have a more limited time, leaving the house after my kids get on the bus and getting home within an hour of them getting home. That leaves only 5-6 hours depending on traffic. But like any human, I still need breaks.

I find that the most refreshing break is to take my smartphone outside (or to the sofa, on work-at-home days) and chat with friends on Discord. It’s a little slower because I am terrible at thumb-typing, but it does help. More usually I take my smartphone to an empty office, which while not as refreshing does clearly mark the boundary of break and not-break.

I also use a browser plug-in called StayFocusd on my work web browser and set it to a very severe 30 minutes to make sure I don’t go over my break time. I don’t block my email, because I’m a parent, but I block everything else but work pages (in my case, QuickBase, QuickBooks, Bill.com, Office.com, Exchange email administration...). And I never have my personal email and my work in the same browser, using Chrome for one and Firefox for the other.

I wish I could say that I always take my own advice, but of course I don’t. Even on an in-office day, I might need to print out some school paperwork and then scan it back, and I need to do that while logged in at my desk.

One thing I always do away from my desk, unless no-one else is in the office, is to take a personal call. Maybe it’s a telehealth appointment that I couldn’t change to a different day, maybe it’s a random call from the school, my spouse, my roommate or a doctor. The answer may be “I’ll call you back” or, in the case of family members, I’ll cancel the call and text back “is it an emergency?” The kids are more likely to text me, and the answer is often “my sympathies, we can talk about it at home.”
