Update: I continue to work on all things! Nothing is abandoned! New chapters will come!
The actual, fun and exciting update: I'm going to start recommending a few AMAZING TLOU fics that you might have missed on my blog every Saturday for the next while.
Tumblr media
I hope you find some new great reads to keep you going while we wait for season 2 - our fandom is seriously so freaking talented, and there are SO many incredibly written fics out there that I want to yell about a bunch of them! Please reblog!
These fics will vary re: how closely they stick to canon and what themes they explore, but you can expect them all to be wonderfully written and, obviously, heavily feature Joel Miller.
Some of these, including this weeks, may include mature content - make sure to read and heed the trigger warnings listed on ao3!
I have never really been interested in fan fiction with OCs, so I missed out on this week's recommendation for a long time and I bet a lot of you did too. It's both a wonderfully told Joel love story and a fic that, in my opinion, really honours the world and characters of TLOU.
Tumblr media
Go Your Own Way by @chronicallyonlinewriter 232,575 words || 31 chapters rating: mature [see ao3 tags for full content warnings] featuring: post season/game 1 life in Jackson, angst, fluff, action, romance, smut, plenty of protective Joel and parent Joel
You can check out a review from @march-flowerr below, describing some of what makes this story so special: (vague general spoilers re: themes and mature content)
“Go Your Own Way stands, in my mind, as one of the most well written piece of fiction on Archive of Our Own. Nandorluna has such an intimate and authentic take on the existing characters that we know and love (on Joel and Ellie and all the Jackson gang) but it’s her ability to create stunning, well fleshed out original characters that drew me to her story initially. Her main character, Benny, moves across the story in such a visceral and realistic way; her arc spans not just the present canon timeline, but transports us through an entire lifetime: from childhood to outbreak, to first love, to first loss, to heartbreak and grief and then finally, to her heart’s final resting place: Joel Miller.
Zee manages to write about and embrace such difficult topics as assault, pregnancy loss, and grief without ever once making a show of it. She handles each moment with quiet dignity and intense self reflection; she draws beauty from the hollow depth of heart ache and despair without ever once losing the thread of hope that The Last of Us is known for.
At the heart of Go Your Own Way is the love story of Joel and Benny. Zee manages to create a compelling story about brokenness and connection and the raw, rare glory that is finding someone with whom you can begin to fit yourself together with again. It’s a story of family - of people who when left to wander, find their hearts drawn to each other. It’s a story about love - each relationship, from Benny and Alexei’s long friendship, to Ellie and Joel’s turbulent first years, to Benny and Joel’s steadfast devotion for each other, caters to the soul. It’s a story that I’ve found myself returning to, again and again, in all moods and places in life. If I could change anything about it, it would only be that it did have to end after all."
If you read and love this, please please show the author some love and leave a kudos and comment!! Happy fandoming y'all.

Hello! I am no longer in an airport so I can now send this ask!
Please tell me your thoughts on Maedhros + Maglor in "And Love Grew" so far - I am especially interested in Maedhros' perspective on the decision to send Maglor separately with the survivors. These two moments stood out to me (and Hurt Me) and I would like to hear your thoughts on what is going on in that ginger skull.
“Enough!” Maedhros shouted, then nervously glanced at the tent’s thin walls. His hand trembled. With lowered voice, he said, “You suffocate me, that is why. Your displays of remorse shame me.” With this confession, all the defiance burning in Maglor’s breast turned to ash. How long? he thought. How long have you wished to be rid of me?
Maedhros stood upon a hill watching the long caravan of Maglor’s host retreat south: a grey snake winding through the golden fields. The sun curved west behind them. Beyond, the woods of Taur-im-Duinath spread across the horizon like a vast canker. Such, also, was the shape and colour of the future Maedhros foresaw when he searched his heart.
[And Love Grew, WiP, T]
My primary motivation for writing this fic was to answer two questions about Maglor's fostering of Elros and Elrond. The first, and biggest, is how did "love grow"? That's the incentive for the plot of the fic, though I've barely gotten there in 4 chapters, oops. The second is: Why Maglor?
To me, the simplest and most obvious answer is to remove Maedhros (physically; he's ever a shadow over Maglor) from the beginnings of the relationship. Space is made for love to grow because Maedhros wasn't there. So that's narratively why I separated them.
What going on in Maedhros' head? It's a mess, frankly. I started writing a full scene for chapter 1 from his POV and his voice was just too disjointed and bleak to endure. It's either madness or despair, and I think you get a glimpse of the latter is that final paragraph and the way he views the world. At least, some readers told me that lol.
It's not untrue what he says to Maglor, at least not to me (one can read it differently). He does find Maglor suffocating. He envies Maglor's ability to process his grief (perceived ability: Maglor is not processing things very well, either), but it also angers him that Maglor is able (apparently) to distill the magnitude of their situation into something that can be processed. Maglor has become an emotional burden. Meadhros hates himself. He can't stand that Maglor doesn't hate him.
One could also read Maedhros pushing him away as a way to keep Maglor from falling even further with him. But personally I don't think Maedhros is feeling that altruistic at this moment. Maglor's presence upsets him and he wants him gone.
All that being said, I do think Maedhros is right that Maglor is the best person for the job of leading the host of refugees. Although, as he forebodes, being the "best person" at this stage of the Feanorian failure arc doesn't really count for much.
It's complicated. Which is why I'm so stuck with this fic. Thank you for the ask and for reading! It helps nudge my motivation to continue.

Humans are weird: Strange Books
( Please come see me on my new patreon and support me for early access to stories and personal story requests :D https://www.patreon.com/NiqhtLord Every bit helps) Alien: Why did this captain want to kill an aquatic mammal? Human: In a previous voyage it bit off his leg. Alien: And that is reason enough to drive them to madness? Human: I have seen boomers do it for being told to wait five minutes in a line so we set the bar pretty low there. -------------------------------------
Alien: So a man lost in the woods and being hunted by animals finds a stranger who takes him into the depths of your version of eternal torment? Human: Pretty much. Alien: Why in the name of the stars would a human follow a complete stranger who leads them into pits of darkness and despair!? Human: We hadn’t really been teaching the old “Don’t talk or follow strangers” thing to our kids as much back then. --------------------------------------
Alien: What is your people’s longest story? Human: Arabian Nights probably. Alien: What makes it so long? Human: The fact that it takes an average of a thousand and one days to finish it. Alien: Impossible! Human: I know right? Human: Filler arc writers have been trying to replicate it for years and never even get close to that kind of timetable. ------------------------------------------
Alien: So this is a novel about vampires and the solo surviving human? Human: Pretty much. Alien: How is that special? Human: Because at the end of the novel the lone human realizes that because everyone else is now a monster that has become the new norm, and as the only remaining human he is now the monster. Alien: That’s some heavy stuff. Alien: Why did the movie suck then? Human: Because it would have meant Will Smith was the bad guy, and he can never be the bad guy. ------------------------------------------
Alien: Run that by me again. Human: So there are animals on a farm that rise up against the farmer and take control of the farm. Alien: Seems straight forward. Human: And then they establish a corrupt communist state that only benefits a few of the animals and enslaves the others. Alien: ………. Alien: This is beyond bonkers. Human: If that’s too brutal for you then I would recommend watching “Chicken Run”. ------------------------------------------
Alien: I find it rather adorable how that simple human in this story likes to run his fingers through hair. Human: Oh no. Human: Which book was that again? Alien: Something about rodents and males I think. Human: Stop reading now. Alien: but- Human: Just stop while you are ahead. -------------------------------------------------- Alien: Why is this dark lord obsessed about jewelry? Human: It contains much of his power and is the one thing keeping his spirit tethered to the world. Alien: Is that not the same as that the dark lord who is incapable of murdering a small child? Human: That dark lord copied off the original dark lord who liked jewelry. Alien: Were they able to kill children at least? Human: He did have a lot of trouble dealing with four children sized men…… ------------------------------------------------------- Alien: So this story is set in the future and yet there are no firearms? Human: Well personal shields are cheap and very powerful in that universe, so having a gun is kinda redundant. Human: I would have thought the giant city sized worms that produce a space traveling narcotic. Alien: That is not as surprising as you might think. Human: Wait, seriously? ------------------------------------------------------------ Alien: So a werewolf and a vampire both want to mate with this human woman? Human: For some unknowable reason, yes. Alien: Which one wins her? Human: The vampire. Alien: Shame for the werewolf. Human: That guy’s creepy ass instead wanted to mate with her daughter. Alien: Why is that creepy? Human: She was a baby at the time. Alien: No wonder you drove werewolves into extinction. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Alien: So your planet is invaded by aliens who are so technologically advanced they cannot be defeated? Human: Pretty much. Alien: How did you defeat them in the end? Human: We sneezed on them. Alien: …………………. --------------------------------------------------- Alien: So this is a rodent that is also a vampire? Human: That drinks the blood of vegetables rather than humans. Alien: Vegetables do not have blood. Human: With how vividly they describe it being sucked out you wouldn’t know. --------------------------------------------------- Alien: These children have a magical house of tree and can travel through time? Human: They go throughout time on adventures. Alien: Wouldn’t that cause untold damage to the timeline and alter the present? Human: Oh without a doubt. Alien: Then why did they not stop? Human: Because later on an old man claiming to be a wizard said it was okay. Alien: That sounds so stupid when you say it out loud. Human: No better than a mysterious woman giving a guy a sword and telling him he is now king. ------------------------------------------------- Alien: Why does this goose have bumps? Human: I want you to know how much I am resisting hitting you with a book right now for that.

Danganronpa 3 Future Arc episode 7
Thonks
(We're back!)
I find it interesting that people blame Makoto for Junko's death.
I get why because he's the one who defeated her. He's the one who won the final trial, learned the truth and beat her at her own game.
He's Ultimate Hope and she's Ultimate Despair.
However, Junko's death is not Makoto's fault. She's the one who pressed the big red button and had all of this set up.
If anything Makoto was trying to prevent her death.
But of course her followers can't blame her so they pick him.
Man... I'm like barely a minute in and I'm on a rant.
Monaca in a dictator outfit while a bunch of Monokuma's at a bar.
Not a visual I expected.
Well Monaca is definitely embodying Junko, doing a lot of her mannerisms and such.
I do find it ironic that Junko's death gives people such despair, it's what she would have wanted.
And Monaca made herself the heir to Junko rather than Komaru.
Junko Enoshima the 2nd aka Monaca Towa doesn't really roll off the tongue, maybe workshop that.
Ayyy Nagisa!
Okay okay the Warriors of Hope are in on this too and know where Monaca is.
Okay but Nagisa's reflection dead ass looks like Mukuro.
Tumblr media
I'm not the only one who's sees it, right?
Awh hell yeah Komaru's blasting Monokuma's with a microphone and taking names.
And Toko is here, trying her best.
I love Komaru's inner monologue of how she was just a normal high-school girl before all of this, while taking out Monokuma's.
Immediately the "hopes not my thing neither is despair" her whole I'm just gonna leave that up to my brother attitude I love it.
Have I mentioned I love the Naegi siblings? Because I absolutely do.
And Genocider Sho is here. I love how Komaru has befriended both Toko and Sho.
Hmm maybe let's not tell Komaru that Makoto was about to either be locked up for an eternity, or if Munakata had his way, executed.
Nooo not the Byakuya fantasy.
What in the world... Why he look like that? Why she look like that?
Ima skip this...
I feel so bad for real Byakuya who is somehow aware of all of this... Poor guy.
It's cool seeing Byakuya's inner monologue. It's no hangman's gambit but it's interesting to see him think stuff over.
And it is suspicious that the killing game isn't being broadcasted, shows they've got something to hide.
I love how Byakuya isn't even that far up in the Future Foundation but takes control abd everyone's just like yeah sure why not.
"Do not fret, for as long as I draw breath this organisation will not fall. I swear it on the dignity of the Togami name."
Nevermind I see why, he was the ultimate affluent progeny, dude was quite literally born to lead.
And it's nice to see it, especially seeing how he's changed and doing this to help his friends.
Also his name means nothing in this world and yet he makes it mean something, man so cool.
Toko and Sho heading into Monaca's base.
This should be good. I love that Nagisa said they don't have the man power and yet these two are just running inside.
It is highly impossible to be more Junko than Junko.
That's just basic maths.
"You're not gonna lay a hand on my brother!"
... No one let Komaru meet Juzo or Munakata.
Actually... Someone please do.
Wait, she surrendered? Huh...
Oh wow she really did blow this pop stand.
And there's a Monokumamobile.
Monaca be acting like every ex Junko cosplayer.
I kinda like this Monaca, just like oh yeah the whole Junko thing eh that was a phase I was going through.
Just laying down and playing games and eating crisps.
I don't trust it tho.
"I don't get it, how did you become such a lousy excuse for a human being."
WOAH!
Komaru!
Wow Komaru Naegi really gives no fucks. She's so over all of this, can't blame her tho.
I... Forgot about the whole Nagito was their servant thing... Huh.
Honestly going soo far down the road you think you're become a Despair filled Nagito... Yeah that'd make me stop in my tracks too.
Nevermind that is the evil smile.
So there gonna kill one of the previous survivors.
... Please don't, Makoto almost lost it when they fake killed Asahina I don't think he can handle a real one.
And Monaca knows but won't spill.
Wasn't prepared for Monaca to actually go to space.
Sure, why not maybe she'll find Kaito.
... Too soon?
I like how it actually gets to Sho that one of the past survivors could be killed.
Komaru being upset at the idea of losing Toko is so sad and sweet.
Aww Komaru and Makoto video reunion.
.... Komaru! Better ways to phrase it, don't say hey Makoto my dearly traumatised older brother.
Monaca told me someone's gonna die because of you.
Like, I get it we don't have much time but don't rip the plaster off that hard.
He's not gonna take this well.
Especially when he's standing next to a survivor from the first game.
Byakuya's attitude of that's complete bullshit, is my thoughts exactly.
"Somebodies gonna die.. Because of me...."
SEE! What did I say?! Oh man I was already concerned for mental state of Makoto Naegi.
And this is only increasing that concern.
I am stressed.

How will SDRA2 Cast Boys handles being with a S/O who a animal tamer who have very protective animals around them like angry pecking birds and for some reason Bears and Lion next to them 🦁 🦅 🐻
Lol ok 👌
SDRA2 Teruya Otori:
He's pretty impressed when he first sees you, but still a little intimidated
Please don't let the birds peck his hat or goggles, but other than that, he doesn’t mind them too much as he gets to know you (and them)
Through his trauma, memory loss, and confusion, he needs some emotional support animals big time
He loves petting and playing with them and the animals accept him and like him very quickly
His favorite moment with you was when the two of you were cuddling together, with your animals acting as your personal blankets
He really does like your animals, even if he has to keep them from ransacking Otori Mart
Nikei Yomiuri:
He was terrified of you at first
"Hi! I- WHAT THE FUCK IS THA-"
He probably runs away ngl
It takes him a while to approach you again, when he does, it's when your inside the monocruise so at least most of your birds won't crap on him
You introduce yourself and he interviews you, but when he asks perverted questions, this man is nearly killed (Like that bear scene from Despair Arc)
He learns his lesson very quickly
Him and your animals are basically forced into a truce to make you happy
Sometimes he'll just grab a slab of meat and throw it (usually at Mikado) and run away with you
Shinji Kasai:
He wasn't too intimidated, he was surprised, but not too scared
There's a chance your animals were intimated at his appearance, and maybe confused his red face for anger at you
He makes sure none of the herbivores try to eat the flower necklace, but besides that he doesn't really mind
It makes him glad that you have friends looking out for you, human or not
He's always willing to let any of the animals jog with him (especially if you come too)
Your animals accept him (and he also gives good pets)
Hajime Makonouchi:
Similar to Shinji, surprised, but not scared
Your animals might be intimidated by him, but not too much
He'll never say no to petting and holding any of them, even the lions and bears
When he trusts you, he’ll trust them
He is also glad you always have friends protecting you and staying by your side, he only wishes that he could have had the same
Will ask you to bring some of them with you when you train and will research ways to keep them healthy
SDRA2 Yuki Maeda:
He yelps when he sees all of your pets
"A-Are they...tame..?”
He nervously asked you if he could pet one of the smaller and fluffy ones, like a tiger cub or dog
It was a flip of the coin whether they loved him or clawed the crap out of him
He is still gentle with your animals and loves giving them treats, one of the reasons you fell for him, eventually warms up to the larger ones
Eventually your animals warm up to him, but he still tries to avoid the intimidating tigers and bears
Sometimes your birds will try to make a nest in his hair
Yuri Kagarin:
If you're a girl, he didn't care
"Getting bit and scratched is worth talking to you, Y/n darling~"
Will help you take care of them just to spend some time with you, even if his arm is nearly ripped off
Will happily pet even your most ferocious tiger, and would always give them treats when giving you gifts
He personally prefers the fluffy animals, no matter how big or scary and will talk in Russian whenever he soothes them (and you-)
He really doesn't mind your animals, eventually learning their names and coming to love them all
If you're a boy, that's all the more reason for him to stay away from you
Your birds will definitely try to nest in his hair-
Your animals will also chase him every time he insults you or even comes close, making any attempt at a relationship that much harder
You probably won't get together unless he finds you being kind to your animals and other girls, and eventually him
Realizing that not all men are bad would make him reconsider, but it would still take a while
Unless the above or an animal plays wingman, you probably won't get together
Syobai Hashimoto:
He thinks your pretty badass and isn’t intimidated at all
It would probably be a while before you get together, even though the animals are harmless compared to people he's dealt with, he is still cold and generally mean which would piss your animals off
Your animals would definitely hate him
It would be up to you to befriend him, but when he accepts you as a friend (a hard task in itself) and your animals accept that you like him, he would eventually learn their names, even if it's just to shoo them away
It’s annoying having to share you with them, but he learns to deal with it as long as they give the two of you some privacy every once in a while
Would probably ask to hire one of your intimidating animals as a bodyguard or somehow incorporate them in some kind of scam
Not afraid to bribe them with treats to get alone with you (Most times, to his surprise, it doesn't work, congrats you got loyal friends)
Mikado Sannoji:
Your animals hate him the second they see him
Why? He's literally the mastermind
For a while, him trying to get near you is like a scene from a comedy movie, the animals just won’t let him close
He tried everything! Scaring them away with fireworks, bribing them with treats, using Monocrow as a negotiator/diversion, nothing worked!
You basically have to talk with him yourself, and he’s very happy when you do
The second you see to tolerate him, he won’t leave your side
“Sorry everyone, Y/n already approved my presence!”
He’ll stick his tongue at them when you’re not looking and cling to the side of your arm
It doesn’t matter how many claw marks or bird droppings he gets on him, he’s happy to be with someone who cares about him

Lois Lane reading recs?👀
Sorry it took me a while to respond, I had to go back and skim read some of these comics to be sure I was remembering them right and some of them i ended up rereading for real lol. I am going to preface this by saying I'm still working my way through the Superman ongoings so that's a blind spot in my knowledge of any of the characters there. That being said, here is my list, ordered vaguely in order of relevance...
Lois Lane Vol. 2 (2019) - I literally cannot emphasize this one enough, it's so good. If you only ever read one thing about Lois please read this. You might need a basic understanding of the Rebirth timeline changes to follow some of what goes on in this series, but to get that you just need to read the wikis, ask someone for a summary, or go read The Final Days of Superman and Superman: Reborn and maybe Convergence Superman too. This series is twelve issues long which is an easy length but not too short, it's written by Greg Rucka who's a pretty good writer in my opinion, and it's just such an engaging story overall. It features Lois investigating corruption, a team-up with Renee Montoya aka the Question, a discussion of the ramifications of timeline changes, Perry despairing at Lois' typos, gay flirting, and Clark dropping in every so often to be adorably married. Also Rucka so clearly likes and respects Lois as a character and it comes through in the story. I almost want to call this series a love letter to Lois Lane.
Action Comics #1, 2 - the first ever story about Superman and Lois Lane. Every comic since then has been built off this one.
Action Comics #6, Superman (1939) #29, 33, 34 - these are some classic Golden Age Lois Lane stories. They're all collected in the Lois Lane: A Celeblation Of 75 Years volume and that's where I read them. These stories are all really fun to read, they show the original characterization of Lois: headstrong, stubborn, determined to prove herself, and very intelligent. They tend to follow a similar format to each other where her male coworkers heckle her or make fun of her or attempt to sideline her and she goes out and proves them all wrong. That 75th anniversary collection has some other good stories too.
The Death of Superman, Funeral For A Friend, Reign Of The Supermen, Return of Superman - the Death of Superman stories may not be primarily focused on Lois, but they were a huge event for Superman comics as a whole and therefore are important to Lois too. She has an important role here, she does in most Superman comics, but this one brings a big change in her life so it's good to read this. It's super easy to find reading lists for these, it'll come up as soon as you google it, but I can absolutely put one together for you if you need it.
Superman (1987) #50, Action Comics #662, 720, and Superman and Lois Lane: The 25th Wedding Anniversary - the first three are the issues where Lois and Clark get engaged, Clark tells Lois his identity, and Lois breaks off the engagement, respectively. The last is the collection of the five issues where they get engaged again, get married, then go on their honeymoon. I unfortunately don't have a more detailed list about that era but hopefully I will soon.
The Chris Kent comics - these are pretty good for Lois, they feature a full character arc for Lois about her decision on whether or not to adopt Chris. Lois and Clark have a whole dilemma on whether they should become parents, so its an important story arc both for their relationship and for their personal feelings towards family and parenthood. It's also just really sweet because Chris is literally the sweetest kid ever. This is a link to a post that has the list of comics:
New Krypton era - if you can, I definitely recommend you read this, because several parts of it are important for Lois. I can't give you a detailed list on this because I read it like two years ago all at once so there's a bunch I don't remember and it's a huge storyline so laying out the reading order is going to take more time than I have right now, but I know there are New Krypton reading lists out there, and I'm going to try to make a list myself sometime in the near future. The post I linked in the previous paragraph also has a link to a post that lists Chris Kent's stories in that era. Chris' stories have Lois show up sometimes and have important further exposition on their relationship. And in addition to that, there are also parts of New Krypton where Lois' father is involved, one issue where he dies, and a few parts where her sister is involved as well. It's a pretty big and important era for the whole Superfamily.
Wonder Woman (1983) #170 - Lois spends the day with Diana to write an article about her. It's great because it establishes a connection between Lois and Diana. It's really interesting because it's examining Diana's character through the perspective of an outsider, and filtering everything Lois learns about Diana through the lens of Lois' biases and preconceptions. Lois' reflections on Diana end up being a reflection of herself as well as being about Diana. Also I just really like Lois and Diana being friends.
Mysteries of Love in Space #1 - possibly my favourite Clois comic of all time. Literally amazing, no notes.
Lois Lane Vol. 1 (1986) - this is one of those comics where the writer decides to talk about a social issue they're thinking about and uses comic characters to do it. In this case it's about children being kidnapped and trafficked, and it follows Lois trying to write a story about the issue. It's honestly not very important in terms of getting to know Lois, and I don't even know if it's part of main continuity, but it's nice to have a story that focuses exclusively on Lois doing her work.
Superman (1987) #88 - a story where Lois gets very angry about the mistreatment of Bizarro by Luthor and Lexcorp. Idk I read this a couple days ago and enjoyed it so I wanted to put it in. Its not really important but if you want to read the full story arc it's titled Bizarro's World and the issues are Superman (1987) #87, Adventures of Superman #510, Action Comics #697, Superman: The Man of Steel (1991) #32, Superman #88.
Superwoman (2016) #1-8 - this one actually has very little Lois in it, and the Lois that's talked about most in it is New52 Lois who you may or may not be able to call the same character as pre-Flashpoint/post-Rebirth Lois, but she persistently haunts the narrative in a way that's really cool to me. Also the other Lois shows up too, if briefly. The story is about Lana Lang being Superwoman while also kind of having to step into the shoes of Lois who was also briefly Superwoman. In general its a great series and has really pretty art so even if the lack of Lois disappoints you its still really good on its own, especially given that its written and drawn by Phil Jiminez who's really solid. You will probably need to read the Final Days of Superman and Superman: Reborn to understand this though.
Superman Smashes The Klan - this is a retelling of an early Superman story that's not in-continuity. It's a really really good story though and i do recommend you read it even if its not for Lois.. It doesnt have much Lois in it, it mainly focuses on a pair of children caught up in some racist attacks, but it does have one of my favourite Lois moments ever...where she's shown to be one of the very few people who aren't afraid of Superman when they find out he's an alien.
There are also a couple books that are for a YA/preteen audience that are exclusively about Lois, Girl Taking Over, and Lois Lane and the Friendship Challenge. Both are pretty cute easy-to-understand stories about Lois as a kid if you're interested in that.
Also like...a lot of Superman comics are going to have Lois in them and she often has a supporting role if she's not in a main role. If you read these comics and you like them, you can use them as a jumping-off point for getting into more Super comics which are going to have more Lois in them! And if you're hesitant to dive into the endless Superman ongoings, there are several retellings and reinterpretations of the Superman origin (like Superman Smashes The Klan) that tell the stories without being bogged down by the dense lore of the ongoings...Superman Secret Origins, Superman For All Seasons, All-Star Superman, American Alien, and John Byrne's initial Man of Steel comics from the 80s are some popular ones. If you do want to get into an ongoing, the current Superman series that started this year is good.
Let me know if you have questions or need clarification on something and enjoy your reading! Also if anyone with better knowledge of Lois is reading this please feel free to add on!

Can we get a ranking of the LI's from best to worst on the yan scale? I don't wanna end up picking the biggest baddie for my first run haha-
Oof, that's actually kinda hard to decide, they're all pretty bad in their own ways. Maybe it's better if I just tell you their types, because one type might be light for one person but heavy for another--- Mikey: Our favorite little he/him lesbian gangster is... well, a gangster. As you might have seen in the "Unhinged Y/N" blurb, he's really erratic in his behavior, and starts out with kidnapping and keeping you, but if pushed too far, will ultimately get rid of you. This can result in either your death, or a new route and LI to unlock. (This route IS very heavy and gorey, though, even by my standards. Use caution with this guy.)
Ulrich: Ulrich is the CEO of a company, plus old family money - he doesn't need to use violence, he has money to pay off people to erase your existence from the internet and all other files and buy the silence of anyone who might have raised the alarm for you. Most people set aside their morals after the 5th fat stack of hundreds. He also has connections to people who would gladly stick a tracking chip in you for the right price. And if it means keeping you, no price is too high. (successful escape leads to new LI and route to unlock.)
Zachnaphael: Technically, this angel doesn't quite go "yan"... but if you push them hard enough, they won't ever be allowed back into heaven, and you'll have to be the one to pick up the broken pieces of an entity who corrupted themselves beyond all recognition for your sake. A shattered mind is not very easy to take care of, or put back together. And if you decide you can't deal with that and leave... Well, then you both are as good as dead. But in the ground, at least you'll be together forever.
Jessica: You hurt her? You dared to hurt her, after all she's done for you, after all she's already lived through? You're just like her "family" - better off as garden fertilizer. But don't worry - your friends will just adore the tomatoes she gives them next year, fresh, dried, sauced, in salads, it will all be just delicious. Jack: This sweet, innocent puppy turns into a feral wolf pretty quick when it comes to the idea of losing you. He won't hesitate to cripple you, cutting off your legs first, and if you still find the will to crawl out the door again in that state, he'll take your arms, too. He'll do everything in his power to make sure you can never, ever, pull that shit with him again. Don't you know it's dangerous out there, after all? Just let him take care of you. That's all he wants. It's not his fault you're too stupid to sit and stay. But maybe after a little training, he'll give you a treat... (successful escape leads to another new LI and route to unlock.)
Narrator: No canon yandere arc, but if you die enough times, he WILL start spiraling into despair and self loathing at not being able to save you. Why won't you listen to him? Are you angry at him? Is this all just to make him suffer? All he wanted to do was help, please, just stop, be safe this time... Please.

Chapter 164 (redrawn version) Expert Review™️
It’s been a hot minute! I’m in the middle of a heated custody battle with Cain over our 37 kids and Pokémon card collection and that’s kinda been weighing on me a bit so I didn’t have the energy to write these.
Anyways, I did write a review for the first version of 164 but then ONE ran into Murata’s office screaming “ERASE THAT SHIT!!!” so I deleted it and here we are. I hope Murata doesn’t upload another chapter before I post this otherwise I’m gonna have a real fucking shit-my-pants meltdown. Like some real fucking episodic type shit.
I’m gonna get started before I need to call one of my emergency contacts.
Oh dude ooooh dude Garou is so starved for affection and appreciation that getting just a crumb of it was almost enough to make him abandon everything oooooh dude it almost makes me wanna hug him but then I just think about the time he stole my Capital One Platinum Credit Card and those evil thoughts go away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Um um um something something African proverb: “A child not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth.”
Really fucking hamfisting it here, like—Garou’s entire rampage from Silverfang’s dojo since day one has been him screaming “I want to be accepted, I want to be loved” and his jealousy towards the heroes for garnering that acceptance and love… after getting just a tiny bit of what they get, it was almost enough for him to figure out what he really wants. But of course, he’s still angry. So he’ll keep fighting. Keep trying to bring the world into despair, not knowing that it won’t make him feel any better.
I’m sure if he were given time to cool down, he would find that he’s just looking for affection. I’m guessing that’s what they were going for before they SCRAPPED the Saitama sit-down arc. Saitama was probably gonna talk him down, give him what he wants, tell him what he really is, and Garou would slowly crumble back to being human instead of being punched back into one. Or he’d get pissed, flip the table, and a social worker would have to intervene. We’ll never know!
And I mean, I’ve seen some criticism of that before the redraws—people saying it’s too OOC of Saitama to wanna sit down and talk to Garou and I mean… kinda? It’s not like Saitama’s never been selfless before. Sure, he’s not Superman-levels of patience, but he’s been really kind! Giving the credit to the other heroes for defeating DSK, letting that kid keep his cash after the hero costume fashion show contest super bonanza whatever, saving that one dude from suicide with his gay little chopsticks…. I don’t think it was too hard to believe that he’d also want to help Garou.
GO GO GADGET ASS JETS!!!!
Tumblr media
Ok I know they’re not coming out of his ass but that would be really funny—AND ALSO…. WHAT’S MURATA’S WHOLE DEAL WITH DRAWING MOTHERFUCKERS TRANSFORMING INTO JETS AND SHIT???? I’m not engineer but that doesn’t seem super realistic (I say as I’m reading a comic book full of superheroes and women who never complain about back pain despite having tits the size of Wyoming).
It was really stupid when Psykorochi did it and it’s a little less stupid now because at least we got the whole mountain-smashing attack or whatever thing (I’m not gonna go back and look at the name because it was probably really gay) so WHATEVER I guess but it doesn’t make a ton of sense okay SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF OR WHATEVER IDK ugh I feel like a greasy nerd complaining at comic-con when I’m really just a greasy nerd complaining in my bedroom.
Speaking about the aforementioned mountain attack (or whatever), Murata really removed the big titty elf woman and my sweet cheese my good time boey Boros 2.0 (AKA Murata’s ripoff of my sweet Xanados), so thats kinda a bummer. But I’m sure they’ll probably crop up later? Maybe? Please? I’m so upset about this LMAO
Tumblr media
And “dimensional seal”? I assume that’s to keep “that bastard” in, yes? Perhaps in some sort of space jail? Could they be referring to this thing?
Tumblr media
Which, I mean… it’s probably God. It looks like God… it’s really big like God…. and it would make sense that Blast and his Justice League would be really concerned about this seeing as though stopping God from committing fuckery is their whole deal (and also the fact Blast just “happened” to appear once Saitama poked a small peephole into this Thing’s jail cell)… but if that’s God and he’s been imprisoned in someone’s basement this whole time, then who the fuck has been fucking with Homeless Emperor and getting jiggly with it on the moon? Or, is this a sorta “awake and dreaming” situation where the God everyone has been seeing is just a projection by this Thing and he won’t reach his true power™️ until he breaks through the aforementioned “dimensional seal?” I’m super confused dawg! None of this shit was in the Bible!
Also this whole thing seems kinda sacrilegious but I’m not enough of a Christian to care lmao hell yeah I’d love to see Saitama clock this dude. If OPM gets a sequel then he should fight Jesus next.
Like 90% of this shit happened because God has one-sided beef with Saitama and everyone else just keeps getting in the middle of it with their Main Character Syndrome and I think that’s the funniest shit ever.
Tumblr media
Lmao God is so fucking pissed at Saitama for breaking the rules (or just his limiter I guess) and becoming too powerful so now he’s brewing up all these fake ass haters in hopes they’ll be able to stop Sai. This is toooooo funny. I love the idea of God as central antagonist to OPM; that’s both hilarious and terrifying at the same time because there’s only one person capable of going up against him. Is that where this is going? Is that gonna be the Climactic End to this series way down the line? Saitama fights God? Because I mean… there is realistically no other being in the universe capable of giving Sai the thrill of a fight anymore. He has to fight God at this point. He’s already at the top of the mountain, the only thing left to do is reach for the heavens.
And I was wondering why God doesn’t just bloop Saitama out of existence or get down there and fight him himself since he hates his dog ass so goddamn much and I suppose that rounds us back to him not being at full power due to his imprisonment in the Dimensional Seal (which is basically just the phantom zone). This is all speculative, by the way. I’m not allowed to talk to Murata anymore.
Anyways, Sage Centipede, Evil Natural Ocean, and possibly even Psykorochi and Homeless Emperor were all sent by God to take out Saitama’s broke ass by proxy and if you don’t think that’s the silliest shit ever then idk what to tell you. I love it though. It makes perfect sense.
Now Garou is one of God’s artificially created Saitama Haters and he looks kinda cool I guess idk. Boy’s got mad hips for a celestial being I’ll tell you what.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
OOOOOOUUGGGHHH I HATE GOD’S DOG ASS FOR PLAYING WITH GAROU LIKE THIS!!! BOY IF YOU DONT GO STICK YOUR HEAD IN A SEWAGE DRAIN PIPE RIGHT NAAAOOOOWWW!!!!!!
Multiple things to be said about this:
1. By Biblical standards, Garou is now considered a prophet.
2. I am aware this may not be Thee Abrahamic God™️ from the Bible but it’s really funny to think so and I’m gonna keep making jokes about it.
3. By Biblical standards, Garou is now also considered to be heavily concussed and dying from internal bleeding.
4. Even while Garou is Biblically concussed and witnessing A Religious Event, he still wants to beat God’s ass.
5. God ignores Garou wanting to beat his ass, which is hilarious. “I know you’re going through a lot right now so I’m gonna ignore you said that… take my hand and beat that bald dude’s ass for me.”
6. Garou wants so badly for Silverfang to be proud of him that he willfully takes “his” hand in this severe moment of weakness. Reminds me of Tai Lung from Kung Fu Panda (okay, everything about Garou reminds me about my boy TL because their stories are so similar) where, in his final fight against Master Shifu, Tai says “everything I did was to make you proud.” And when Shifu gives him an ounce of adoration, he wavers for a minute. KIND OF LIKE SOMEBODY ELSE WE KNOW…. OOUUUGGHH
7. God is a bitchass motherfucker for exploiting this and he better keep his doors locked tonight.
Edit: food for thought… what’s gonna happen when God takes his power back? I mean, we know Garou’s not gonna die or anything but like… oooooh spookyyyy. Oh shit. What if Garou does die lmao
In conclusion: GARFIELD, ARE YOU /J OR /SRS!?!?!!?!?!?!!?!?
Tumblr media
In conclusion part 2: still peeved we lost the comedy gold of the Saitama sit-down arc and my legal grounds to sue Murata for stealing my OC (this is a joke please), but I do think overall this works a bit better. The Monster Association Arc has largely been drawn out way too long and I kinda just want it to end but I’m sure a lot of the pacing issues will be ironed out in print. And if they aren’t, fuck it! I’ll violate my probation and fly to Japan to stick ONE’s nose in it (this is also a joke please). Have a good weekend. It’s Pride month, by the way. You’re gay.

So, I intend to take a break on "I DISAGREE: An Ibuki Mioda SDR2 Protag Swap AU" after all. I've got a few fanfics that've been simmering on the back burner way too long, and I'll return to this project for Chapter 2 once I finish a few of them. Thanks so much to everyone who's read, liked, reblogged, and even reached out to me about any of these posts!
While I'm here, though ... I might as well, wrap up Chapter 1 with a few stray notes. It's nothing huge, I think - just the kind of stuff I thought about but couldn't find space for as the posts unexpectedly became more story-heavy. Before I move "I DISAGREE" to the backburner, please enjoy this grab bag of tidbits.
Bonus Track: A Few Last Notes on Chapter 1
Where to start. Where to start ...
Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu, Team Player
One major appeal to me in writing this AU is shaking up character arcs and dynamics. When I decided that Peko Pekoyama would come down with Despair Disease, I knew I'd have to do something different with Fuyuhiko. His love for Peko (romantic or filial or whatever you want to say) would not let him sit around in a cottage while her health is at serious risk. That's why just one day after stating that he had it in him to kill one of his classmates, he finds himself volunteering to nurse some of them!
Well, his focus in the makeshift hospital quarters of the Hotel Mirai is definitely on a specific patient. Fuyuhiko starts SDR2 as a selfish loner. Even this shake-up didn't seem like enough to make him open up with the rest. Ibuki dragging him into hanging out with her and the others that first night would help. However, it's having Hajime Hinata on his tail that truly turns him into part of the gang. We know how tight the boys get in SDR2, their bond developing over the course of three weeks. With them being in such close quarters from dawn to dusk, and especially with Fuyuhiko already so vulnerable while Peko's out of commission, I imagined it would develop faster.
To be clear, Fuyuhiko doesn't pull a full 180 by the end of Chapter 1! Though I wrote that he and Peko attend Ibuki's cottage party, I think he wouldn't stay for long. He trusts Peko with his life, he's pretty fond of Hajime, and Ibuki and Byakuya are on his good side. The rest remain strangers to him. While he's more open about knowing those strangers now, the stakes of their situation are never far from his mind. Expect him to grapple with questions of trust down the line.
Peko Pekoyama and Despair Disease
Nagito's side effects from Despair Disease, you already know from the game. (The repeat is partly to prevent him from igniting the killing game like in SDR2, and partly for reasons I'll explain in good time.) Chiaki and Kazuichi's side effects, you already saw in great detail with their relevance to the murder and trial. What I didn't describe in much detail are Peko's side effects. All I really said was:
"... She’s too laidback and apathetic to care about anything." (The AU Narrative's Chaotic First Three Mornings)
"Peko’s operating on sheer inertia, refusing to exert herself for anything that doesn’t interest her." (The Killing Game's First Victim)
Two sentences!
So the idea here was that Peko is a deadly serious person who prioritizes duty above all else, including her own well-being and life. I'm not just talking about the whole "I'm a tool, not a person" stuff from her trial. Even when she does fun things like slice up coconuts for new friends, there's still a severity in her manner. She immediately peaces out of a party to sit in an office by herself as a line of defense. No wonder animals fear her - she walks through life with an unflinching tension in her entire being.
That's why I imagined that the opposite of herself would be someone who doesn't do anything, even move from her spot, unless she feels like it. Lazy Peko - a chilling thought! Not exactly Depressed Peko, perhaps, though she wouldn't smile more than usual because that act in itself requires flexing muscles. Apathetic Peko, who takes nothing seriously and abandons all her discipline and duties ... including caring for Fuyuhiko. Which is why he must watch over her.
One more thing: ever notice that Peko is pretty easily embarrassed? She can't keep a poker face when Teruteru nails her choice of undergarment, and she nearly loses her cool when she confesses to bathroom incapacitation during the blackout in Chapter 1. You can just imagine her face crinkling behind that Shining Justice mask (though her performance is so committed!). It's the tragic fate of many a person who takes themself very seriously. Picture a scene where Peko settles into a decidedly unladylike position in her hospital room, with Ibuki exclaiming that Teruteru was dead-on.
Teruteru Hanamura's Still Around
It's funny: when I first decided to write fanfics about SDR2, I really thought I'd never so much as mention Teruteru. He's creepy, he's a pervert, he has no redeeming qualities ... yet I discovered that even he has a place in the Jabberwock Island ecosystem. Three of my four currently published fanfics include him, and one even sees him in a starring antagonist role. What can I say? In all three instances, he fit the bill.
By virtue of my "different killers, different victims" promise, Teruteru couldn't die in Chapter 1 of my AU. Killing off a fan favorite like Chiaki while keeping him around seemed unthinkable, which made it all the more fun to do. But if he's staying for the time being, he'll earn his keep. I just have to give him something interesting to do ... but splitting the party with Chapter 1's motive also means we barely get to know him in that time! What's a writer to do?
I suppose that when I start Chapter 2, I'll have to catch up Ibuki, and us by extension, on what happened in the cottages while she was at the hotel. Rest assured, though, that I have ideas for Teruteru. In his brief time onscreen in SDR2, we do get glimpses of depth to him beyond remarking on girls' panties. I'll try to bring out those depths. I'll also definitely tone down the creepiness, though I should say that making him a total eunuch just wouldn't be true to his character.
Well, that's just about all I can think of for this bonus bit. If there's anything you want to know more about, you can send me an ask, leave a comment, write it as a tag in a reblog, tie a letter to a carrier pigeon, whatever. I'll see if I have an answer for you! Be warned, though, that the answer might just be, "Wait until the next chapter." Until next time, take care and thank you again.
PREV: Ending Chapter 1 with a Sleepover
NEXT: Coming eventually!

I was talking to a friend about prophecies in LOTR, and she made some reference about Tolkien using Catholic word choice (something along those lines?) and that’s how he made the prophecy work (like switching things around?) I was just like “yeah, totally” because I was too embarrassed to ask. Can you explain this please? I am not Catholic, but I love reading LOTR series and would like to understand more. Thanks!
Hi there!
I'm not entirely sure, if this is a Catholic thing. I always thought that Tolkien's catholicism is visible in how he handles redemption arcs and the subject of pity, remorse, sin and salvation.
I think one of the most important things about LotR is that Frodo, the hero, fails. He fails because he is a fragile human being who cannot resist the pull of the Ring forever. At the same time, the task itself is fulfilled, and this happens because Bilbo and Frodo both at a much earlier point chose pity. The Bagginses (and to a certain extent Sam's) pity for Gollum is the one crucial lynchpin that makes a good ending possible. It's not a reward for their persistence, it's a gift that comes unexpectedly from one of their good deeds.
The prophecies and visions in LotR are not necessarily catholic I'd say, only in the sense that it is difficult to interprete them correctly and that they can mean something completely different than what seems to be obvious.
Some prophecies are straigth forward. "From ashes the fire will rise" (or something like that) is a prophecy of Aragorn's rise to kingship and there is not much room to wriggle around that. Other prophecies are more ambiguous. Aragorn has to choose the "Paths of the Dead" to bring help to Gondor and this is ambiguous and a bit ominous, but there is a solution where he doesn't have to die. Finding the right meaning helps our heroes to move forward. Using the "paths of the Dead" but as Isildur's heir is the solution that enables Aragorn to use the terrible ghosts to his advantage.
Then there are visions that show truth but can only be understood at the right moment. Sam sees Frodo lying as if sleeping of the path of Cirith Ungol but only when this really happens does Sam understand that Frodo was "dead" in his vision. Frodo is not really dead, but the important thing is that this "understanding" makes Sam take the ring - that doesn't fall into the Orcs' hands as a result.
Sometimes prophecies and visions can be misleading as well (and this is a trope that is older than catholicism). Denethor has a vision of the ships from Umbar sailing towards Minas Tirith and despairs because he doesn't know that Aragorn and help is on the ships. The people of Laketown have a prophecy about the river and the lake turning to gold when the King under the Mountain returns, and this prophecy gets fulfilled in a gruesome way when Smaug the dragon attacks their town and the river runs golden because of the fire that rains on the town.
So, Tolkien loved to play with prophecies and use them in different ways and not straight forward. We know that he thought that the prophecy in MacBeth and the solution about the forest coming down to tear MacBeth from his throne was a bit lame. He invented Ents to have a realy walking and vengeful forest!
If you had asked me, what I think gives Catholic vibes in Tolkien I would not have named the prophecies, to be honest. All in all, the catholicism is clearly there, but it's more about the low and deep currents than about the surface if you get what I mean.
People fail and they can be forgiven. Middle Earth is beautiful but it is not perfect. In the long run good acts pay off in ways we might not forsee. Boromir regrets his failure and saves Pippin and Merry. Merry saves Eowyn and Pippin saves Faramir. Boromir's sacrifice was not in vain. Bilbo pities Gollum and lets him live, so does Frodo and later Sam. Gollums - a tortured soul - betrays Frodo but in the end it is Gollum who saves the world because Frodo, the hero, failed.
It is never explicit. Gandalf says that Bilbo was meant to find the Ring but not by Sauron. By whom? The Valar? Illuvater himself? This question is never answered.
Thanks for the ask! It is a very interesting subject!

Words - 700? Idk

+~ now playing - gentle rain = hoyo-mix ~+
Everyone remembers the scene. It’s stuck in my brain. Every single time I look at him, I can see it playing on loop. And it breaks my heart.
The scene I’m talking about is where Makoto almost kills himself because of despair. And let me tell you, I felt a heck of a lot of despair while watching it.
So imagine this…
You and Juzo were the ones who stopped Makoto from ending his life. Watching Juzo pin the almost unrecognizable man who you’ve fallen in love with since the killing game struggle, cry, and grunt in pain made your heart shatter into a million pieces. It was at that moment your hope had left you. After all those days begging stuck in that god forsaken school, your hope slowly repairing with the help of Makoto’s blind optimism and kind words to you, it all comes to an end as you collapse onto your knees, tears streaming down yours cheeks, but your too stunned to even speak. Just silence as Juzo smacks some sense into him. Even as he returns to his original hopeful self, your despair still consumes you. You slowly get up and walk over to him.
“H-huh?! Ah! Reader, are you okay? Why are you- Ackk!”
Your plan on just walking over to him fails as you fall on top of him, your voice finally returning to you. His eyes widen as you let out a pent up wail, full of agony and suffering. You try to convey your thoughts and feelings in words, but only your loud crying can choke it’s way out of your throat. Hearing your destainful sounds, the sight of you desperately clinging onto him as if he is sand between your fingers, tears and snot dripping down your face, eyes red and puffy from crying so damn hard causes his heart to break as well. Yes, you heard me right, Mr. Sunshine and Rainbows’ heart literally cracks due to your despair.
As Juzo leaves in disgust, you finally find your words.
“M-Makoto… I- Sniff- I-I-I don’t know-Don’t know what I-I would have d-done w-w-without you… p-please I- please d-don’t…. PLEASE DON’T LEAVE ME!! I-I… I love you!!! S-S-So m-much!! Wahhahhhhh!!
For a few seconds, time froze. You… loved him? Everything made since now. You always stuck by him, during and after the killing game, even before it started. You were so kind to him, you defended him no matter what, you always made him feel less alone. But he never thought you cared about him in that way. The funny part is that he has also had a crush on you since high school.
Enough with the ones got, HC’s are easier
After a long time of comforting you (maybe around 30 mins or something, he really wanted to amen sir you were okay) he apologizes for ever letting himself fall into despair and for the fact you had to see him like that. It must had been very traumatizing. And it was. After that touching moment together as you both hugged while leaving against the wall, still sat on the ground, you decided that after you both got out of there, you would start a life together.
And you did. You both found a place to live at the future foundation, at least what was left with it, and began your healing processes. It took many, maaaaaany nights of crying into each others chests, days off of work, and time spend talking to each other about everything that happened and how you both feel until it actually stated to get better.
Every night you both would fall asleep holding each other tightly, not even daring to let go in case something happened in the middle of the night. And sometimes, you both would have nightmares. Terrible ones. Sometimes, one of you would walk up by screaming while tears gushing down your cheeks, just to be greeted by the other who sleepily held on tight, wishing that all this pain you both experienced would go away.
Those nights turned to few, rare nights. And with months, but most likely years or hard work with therapists, medication, and spending time with each other, you both eventually got to a point where you could wake up almost every morning to be excited for the day ahead of you, instead of scared and dread-filled.
And on the last day of both of your theropods visits, he once again surprised you with how much hope he can bring to you by going down on one knee and asking you to marry him.

WARNING REZERO ARC 7 SPOILERS
The author repeatedly say that Re:zero is a heartwarming story, and it has the heartwarming tag in Narou too, so of course Re:zero is not only doom, gloom, and despair. It's a story about how a boy and a girl can find a moment of peace, and it's also a story about a boy when pushed from all corners will use his only strength--the ability to not give up. With premises like that, it's obvious that Subaru won't be going down the emo/gritty/vengeful/ruthless route anytime soon no matter how close he comes to it in the main story (IF stories are different matters). Because if he does then, well, he gives up and that is not the theme of Re:zero. People who want dark!Subaru in the main story without considering what Re:zero is all about can just read the IF routes or write fanfics about it, geez.
Hoo boy, I literally jumped out of my seat, the newest chapter is wild. Tanza assuring Subaru that people gladly sacrificed themselves for him because he stood by their side was really poignant, because this incident in Ginunhive is not even the first time it happens. Off the top of my head, there's Rem in Arc 3, Otto and the Arlam villagers in Arc 4, Ram, Beatrice, and Emilia in Arc 6, and now Idra, Hyain, and Weitz in Arc 7. For Subaru, his gentleness towards others isn't something special, but other people know how hard it was to be that kind--and they didn't even know the betrayals and hate that Subaru experienced in failed loops. Even then, there were so many who were grateful for his existence (kinda a pity because the story needs Subaru to die lol), and Subaru with his deep-rooted self-hatred kinda needs the repeated reminder that yes, people loves him enough to the point where they're fine being dead as long as he's alive. One Satella and the witches' intervention isn't enough for the bucket of low self-esteem that is Natsuki Subaru.
And then there's this passage:
"--I can return by death!"
I'm right here. Please, find me. I know I'm selfish, but I want to save everyone.
My--Natsuki Subaru's authority alone isn't enough. That's why--
"--Find me, Satella."
"I love you."
THIS MOMENT!! RIGHT HERE!! SUBARU REALIZING THAT HE NEEDS SATELLA FOR RBD TO FUNCTION NORMALLY!! HIM FINALLY ACCEPTING SATELLA'S LOVE CONSCIOUSLY!! INVISIBLE PROVIDENCE!! SUBARU FINALLY FINDING HIS SECOND WIND FOR THE CLIMAX IN LUPGANA!! LET'S GOOOO!!!
I'm really excited to know that Subaru will bring the whole Ginunhive as an army to attack the capital. Kinda funny that people had speculated that Subaru would start a rebellion and he did, it's just that he needs to accept Satella's love first and unite the island under "the current emperor's illegitimate son who wanted to take over the crown". Because they're a big entourage, I'm sure words would travel faster, so I'm sure Vincent, Priscilla, and Emilia factions will also gather in Lupgana. Also, now that Subaru can use his authorities, I expected Cor Leonis will make an appearance later.
I had a feeling that Bassu would change to Boss, and I'm glad I'm right lol. If only Subaru helps Halibel, he'll also get Kararagi's strongest as his ally. First Reinhard and now Cecilus--Subaru is collecting all these super-powered allies like they're pokemon.

ok I do have to bitch because this is such a textbook example of "this could be great if absolutely everything about it was different"
(multiverse of madness spoilers)
because wanda slowly losing her mind and grip on reality through a combination of grief, longing, and the corrupting influence of the darkhold would actually be a really compelling arc?
imagine her trying her best to heal after westview, but isolating herself out of shame and fear, and awakening alone from dreams of her children, night after night. imagine her learning (from strange, or from the darkhold, whatever) that all dreams are actually visions of alternate realities. imagine her slowly becoming obsessed with the idea that her children-- not just any children she might have, but those exact children, the ones she dreamed into being in the depths of her grief over vision, her children with vision-- are real, are out there.
imagine her thinking, if only I could just see them one more time. kiss them one more time. I wouldn't need anything else. I wouldn't do any harm. imagine her learning about dreamwalking. shrugging off warnings of the danger. I won't do any harm, I just want to see them.
she dreamwalks for the first time. tentatively. just to see.
it's the wrong universe. wanda in this universe has no children. but she has a brother. oh she missed him too. oh beloved. oh to look into his eyes once more. why are you looking at me like that? like you haven't seen me in--
but she can't stay here. she's looking for her children.
in the next universe piotr is dead but vision is alive. they're together and happy.
no children though. she can't stay.
in the next universe she's the scarlet witch. a dark and beautiful queen. she kills with a flick of the wrist. the Illuminati or whoever the fuck kneel and pay homage, or are torn asunder. all love her and despair.
still no children.
she keeps looking. she finally finds them.
and by now she's too hungry. she can't bear to do what she was planning to do. just kiss them good night one more time. she can't leave. she has to find a way to stay. there must be a way. there MUST. if there isn't then she'll make one.
what about that little girl. stephen's new protegee. the little girl he found running desperately through the multiverse, searching for her lost mothers. the one he told wanda about as a cautionary tale, when he warned her about the corrupting power of the darkhold, the dangers of dreamwalking. little america who opened a portal with her uncontrolled power and who has traveled through so many universes she can't remember where home is any more. who has no alternate selves. whose parents don't exist anywhere, not anywhere in the multiverse, not in any form. how can that be? we don't know. if we did we'd know a lot more about the multiverse than we do. but wanda the point is that [blah blah blah she tuned him out how could he understand he doesn't have any children]
[he does in some universes. christine's children. and in this universe he's kind of starting to get it a little bit. because little america is starting to give him strange feelings like maybe he'd fucking kill anyone who threatened her. like maybe he'd rip up the fabric of reality to keep her safe. he wouldn't really of course. he's trained better than that. in sorcerous detachment. but he does get it, wanda, please listen--]
etc etc
like it could have been so fucking GOOD!!! god DAMMIT!

X-Men: First Class 8 (April 2007)
Jeff Parker/Roger Cruz
This is the last of First Class...except it's not. The original series as conceived ran for eight issues and "ends" here, but it did well enough that it was followed by a couple of special issues and a new monthly series that ran a while longer, which my invaluable guide suggests I continue reading at this point, so that's what we're going to do. Sorry to anyone who was hoping to go back to the 60s...
Tumblr media
While reading this issue I was struck with a sudden worry that I'd become desensitized to just how bad the art here is, so please take a look at the above panel to refresh your memory. We're in theory looking through a window pane here - hence the inexplicable plant up the middle that muddies up the composition. And what is Jean's face. Anyway, as you can see, Xavier is away and Jean has a psychic vision of him being in trouble. But where is he?
Tumblr media
Oh right, he's in a six hundred mile radius west of the Congo. What?! Apparently this makes perfect sense to the X-Men, who head out there and discover a helpful local, the beloved (?) major (??) classic (???) Marvel character Gorilla-Man.
Tumblr media
Gorilla-Man is an authentic 1950s Marvel pulp character, predating any of the X-Men and most of their superheroes, which is sort of cool. Of course he's also a white dude (in the body of a gorilla) hanging out in Africa talking about "the natives" and their supersitions, so, yeah.
Tumblr media
There's some hippo action which is an almost exact retread of the alligator action in the Lizard issue, right down to Bobby freezing the water. This was like three months ago guys, this is lazy.
Tumblr media
Eventually they find Xavier in a Lara Croft-style temple, with a total absence of villains: he's trapped in a psychic pit of despair that the temple generates, and the rest of them all succumb too until Gorilla-Man breaks them out. The end, I guess?
Tumblr media
Presumably this all sold quite well, well enough for the subsequent issues I mentioned above, which I'll be reading next. As you can tell, aside from flashes of interest - almost all related to references to the original comics, which are extremely fresh in my mind - I really didn't like it, and this issue illustrates why.
Tumblr media
The story, as with all the other stories, is triggered and wrapped up a single issue: why is this the last in the run? Nothing particularly important happened in it. To some degree the writers must have felt hemmed in by existing 50-year-old canon, but they had eight issues in which they could have built small arcs and themes and they absolutely didn't. The next run is longer - 16 issues, I believe, and a couple of specials - so maybe they'll feel a bit more confident int hat one.
Tumblr media
Mostly it's just that I hate the art, though.

The Great Anime Rewatch of 2024 - Part IV
Lucky Star
First watched: Circa 2008? Rewatched: January 2024
Original rating: 5 New rating: 5
The weird shit about Lucky Star is that even though the show is essentially about nothing, the episodes go by very quickly for me. (Compared to other slice of life shows in this rewatch round that were mind numbingly slow, but actually had a plot, or something resembling a story arc: Aoi Hana, Aria, and Kimi ni Todoke.) Its quick switching between scenes due to its nature as a 4-koma adaptation is actually doing wonders for my shitty attention span. With that said, it was wearing out its welcome very quickly, and motivation to watch more was low. The second half starts focusing on the expanded cast that I don’t give a shit about, and I don’t think other fans do either. Lucky Star is definitely not a show to be binged, and I also don’t see myself revisiting it again.

Blood Blockade Battlefront 1 & 2
First watched: Fall 2015, Fall 2017, original airdates Rewatched: January 2024
Original rating: 7, 7 New rating: 4, 6
I’ve been on a weird streak of watching anime featuring blonde twins: Migi & Dali, Trigun Stampede, and now BBB. As soon as I started watching, I remembered the original story was written by the same author as Trigun. Rewatching Trigun did not go well for me. But wait! Matsumoto Rie directed the first season. Maybe this won’t be so bad.
First off, I’m not wild about the art style—specifically the way people are drawn. There are stunning visuals elsewhere: the not-chess match in episode three, the giant tree train station, etc. The ending sequence is fun and joyous. BBB’s tone reminds me more of Baccano or Space Dandy than Trigun, which is definitely a good thing. What I don’t think is a good thing is how BBB starts with a large cast, and primarily focuses on what they can do, rather than who they are. The problem is exacerbated as new characters are introduced every episode. Space Dandy was similar, but that show did a much better job of establishing its core cast. Then the story shifted to anime original material which was so poorly done and…maybe Matsumoto Rie isn’t as good of a director as I once thought. (Although I do love King of Despair, he just wasn’t in the right anime.)
The second season’s change in director was noticeable immediately. The first thing that felt different was the music—we started off with a rap song. The visuals also look cleaner. And, oh? What’s this? We’re finally spending time on the Libra members? I’m finally getting a feel for who they are as people now? Amazing. This is what I was looking for last season. But of course, I’m impossible to please, whatever. And now my problem is that the entire season is episodic, and no overarching goal for the heroes to be working towards. The seasons should’ve aired in reverse: season one should’ve been character-centric episodic, and give an overarching story to season two. There were some fun moments, but BBB just didn’t do it for me the second time around.

Rideback
First watched: June 2011 Rewatched: January 2024
Original rating: 7 New rating: 4
Here’s an anime no one else remembers. Taking place in the year 2025, and with the original story starting publication in 2003, it’s interesting to see how people depicted the future without the presence of social media and over-reliance of cell phones. Other than that, there’s not much to say about Rideback. I think the premise of a retired dancer trying to find a new purpose could’ve been really lovely in the hands of a better writer. Too bad the writing and characters are dull, but the mechs themselves are cool. More pirouetting mechs please. Moving on.

Full Metal Panic! & Fumoffu
First watched: June 2012 Rewatched: January 2024
Original rating: 8, 8
New rating: 5, 7
This is such an anime anime: teenage mercs piloting mechs, high school romcom, terrorists, man Full Metal Panic! sure does have it all. When I first watched it, I liked it enough to watch the sequel, the comedy spinoff, and the OVAs/specials. There is something about it that is timeless, yet it has aged strangely. The first few episodes in particular were very bad. Barring the lackluster animation, it did get better, or at least more tolerable. I’m thankful that Sosuke’s secret was out to Kaname by episode five. But every time I finished an episode, I asked myself, ‘what actually happened?’ Things are happening, but it never feels like the plot is advancing, or the characters are growing. I lasted twelve episodes.
Crunchyroll doesn’t have the second season, but it does have Fumoffu. I had a much better time here. Because the jokes are so specific to the characters and the bits actually have a plot, the comedy has aged surprisingly well.
I didn't realize how big of a franchise Full Metal Panic! actually is until now. With a a ridiculous number of light novels and manga, and anime adaptations as recent as 2018, I can’t fathom this story going on for as long as it has.

Fruits Basket
First watched: Circa 2006 Rewatched: January 2024
Original rating: 7 New rating: 7
Fruits Basket and I go waaaaaay back. Both the English and Japanese versions, as well as the manga, I couldn’t get enough of this shit when I was in middle school. I’ve been wondering whether to watch the remake for a while now, but wanted to revisit the original first.
Barring the mispronunciations of the character’s names, the dub's core cast still rocks. I alternated between English and Japanese depending on what characters were present. Also this is funny as hell.
The main issues I have with this adaptation are: the soundtrack sounds like it only has ten songs, and constantly reuses the same song each episode, the lackluster art style and animation (Deen 2001 at your service), and some of the English voice actors. Aside form that, this story still holds up. And I am more emotionally attached to it than I thought I was going to be. I still like these characters, I still like this story, and I still love that gentle opening song. I had a good time revisiting this.
Dear fucking god please let the remake still keep the humor. Don’t let it succumb to the melodrama.
