How can you tell if my child has problems with expressive language (using words and language)?
If a child has difficulties with expressive language they might:
Have difficulty naming items and objects.
Not link together words or uses sentences that are shorter than others of the same age.
Use sentences that sound immature for their age.
Use ‘jargon’ (made up words) in speech.
Produce sentences that are ‘muddled’ (i.e. words in wrong order, lots of stops and starts, a lack of flow).
Not be understood by unfamiliar people.
Have difficulty finding the right words to use in conversation or when describing or explaining something.
Have trouble retelling a story.
Have difficulty writing paragraphs and stories.
*These difficulties will vary from child to child dependent on their age.

receptive language: how we understand spoken words, the language around us, and the ability to hear / understand / comprehend spoken language. need for learning, play communication with others, understanding directions, safety, and participation in everyday activities.
expressive language: the use of language to communicate with others. expressive language is “expressed” through speech, sign, written words, picture symbols, gestures, body language, or alternative forms of language to communicate wants, needs, thoughts, and ideas.
expressive and receptive language fit together like important puzzle pieces.

Receptive Language Disorder
Receptive language disorder occurs when a child has difficulty understanding what’s being said to them. This is because they have a difficulty in processing and retaining auditory information. For this reason, they struggle to follow instructions or directions. Although therapy is highly recommended to help your child overcome receptive language disorder, there are also some things you can do to help them along the way as well.

Toddler-Language: Object to Picture Matching
Learning language comprises a substantial portion of a toddler's development. In a Montessori classroom, toddlers learn language through interactions in the classroom as well as using materials on the shelves. One such material, matching objects with corresponding picture cards, allows students to build focus and concentration as they notice differences between each insect. This skill is called visual discrimination, which is vital for pre-reading. As students connect the pictures and objects to what they see in reality, it fosters an understanding of their surroundings and enriches their vocabulary as they label bugs they see in everyday life. As they notice the similarities between the insects, they begin to classify objects grouped by similar traits.

something that might be useful to people, but i recently learned that what i thought had been part of auditory processing issues is actually receptive language issues. cause id always heard audio processing issues described as "difficulty processing what youre hearing", and assumed that having trouble processing the meanings themself was part of it. but apparently audio processing is more accurately described specifically as like, "having difficulty processing which words are being said". and i definitely experience that, but apparently having difficulty connecting correctly-heard words to their meanings is actually a receptive language issues thing rather than an audio processing issues thing.
like, ive described my receptive language issues before as like, if my brain is a lake, then the lake is frozen and the words im hearing are sitting right above the ice and wont sink in. i can perfectly recognize the words, but either it takes longer for the meaning to click, or it doesn't click/permeate deep enough for the meaning to be fully/intuitively understood, or in some cases the meaning just doesnt click at all.
and another way this differs from audio processing issues is that it can apply to written words also. so like, having to read a sentence several times before it stops being just a mental noise and starts meaning something. or having to double check written instructions just as much as id have to ask for clarification on a lot of vocal ones. and i hadnt connected this to the same thing happening with vocal words before but yeah, both part of receptive language issues

The "I'd kill for you. please tell me to kill for you" meme is all well and good but imagine Childe's delight when this is not him but his loved one.

Since they said they will be looking for feedback on the new songs during the tour I hope the positive reception of Šta Bih Ja and Bluza will influence them towards more serbian / slovenian songs

having an expressive-receptive language disorder is so infuriating in this world it's like. i understand the language of bodies and faces and eyes, of music, of shape and color and art and motion, of the wind and the world and the stars. i can understand the information you're telling me but not from you and your words. my mother tongue is the way the sound of a table being set echoes around the room and fills the space, the only tongue we all share, when it was meant to be the most spoken language in the world. i am so smart in my mother tongue but you cannot speak it well, and i have learned that i need to be the one to speak yours or i lose my chance to live, so i love words intimately from my years spending hours learning each one; i am a linguist who cannot read or write. i hate words as they are the tool wielded against me, the invention of the majority that i cannot use, but words are my lovers, they've become my dearest companions that very few people will have the same relationship with. in order to have someone know that i cannot use their mother tongue, i must speak their mother tongue. the more i use theirs the more i lose mine, but mine is what made me fall in love with living and to live i must use theirs, and even when necessary i cannot cannot cannot unless i use up all my energy for it and then continue to overdraw. and despite it all i love your mother tongue, because in spoken language i am easily able to understand my human friends, i can read them as i've learned over years years years YEARS how their language presents itself in mine. but should i try to come up with a way to show my experiences, i must speak in your tongue, and unlike the bank i know to draw from with my friends, the words are not there. so i simply read my mother tongue whenever i can, watching the light pass along the walls and falling in love with the way the wheels move along the train tracks in a way i can't share the way my loved ones can with me. why must i speak when everything is written out in front of you already. why must i speak your tongue when you won't speak mine. everything i say will be a shadow of what i mean.

It almost seems like a piece Hirano is missing about his feelings for Kagi is his understanding of how big Kagi’s feelings are towards him.
I really haven’t fully understood this. Kagi kind of started to talk about how he finds it difficult to express to Hirano how much he loves him. That he can’t figure out how to convey the intensity of his feelings but he wishes Hirano could see them.
In this chapter, Hirano does start to see them. He’s so surprised by them even though Kagi has already told him directly that he’s in love.
Hirano is a funny guy, he channels his understanding of passion through something easier to comprehend, like Kagi’s love of basketball. His desire for mastery (and winning) is something Hirano understands, admires, and wants for himself I think.
Hirano loves passion.
And so in this chapter, when all Kagi wishes is for Hirano to understand how much he is loved, Hirano starts to see that.
All that passion that he sees and understands so clearly
Tumblr media
I think that Hirano is going to recognize his feelings for Kagi by first falling in love with the love that Kagi has for him.
Once it truly clicks for him how much Kagi loves him, he’s gonna start recognizing how much that love means to him - in his own language of passion and also because he just really loves who Kagi is.
I think.

Whenever people ask me for music recommendations in our shared native language I feel obliged to tell them that, even though it's my native language, I rarely know what songs are about, because I barely pay attention to the meaning of the text.
You know, just in case a song is about something absolutely disturbing and I didn't notice that. Impaired receptive language and stuff.
One time I listened to a song about a corpse floating in a lake and didn't realise it, even though the lyrics were unambiguous. And auditory processing was just fine, I could sing along actually. My brain just didn't connect the words with the meaning. In my native language.
So yeah, I made it a habit to tell people "Uhm, just in case this is about something strange.... It doesn't mean I support or like that, please simply assume that I'm not aware of the meaning." 🤷🏻‍♀️
