Two Stag Day!

The wind was coming in hard from the north, in Fiordland that means just one thing, heavy rain is coming! I left camp and decided to hunt a bush saddle I had had luck in before, as the strong wind would be better than the fickle fluctuations of the usual breeze.

Luck was on my side. On the south side of the saddle a stag was roaring hard and often. As I worked closer I could also hear another stag on the north side of the saddle but several hundred yards down.

Sidling just on the leeward side of the saddle I put up a hind but was happy she didn’t bark. The stag I was after was still roaring aggressively but as I closed the distance he kept moving. I answered his roars, and that wound him up, but he kept his distance across the saddle. After an hour we both had crossed the saddle and he was in the bush face 100+ yards away, still roaring but no closer.

Frustrated and now hungry I leaned against the big tree, and surveyed my options. I pulled out my can of sardines and dealt with the hunger problem. The stag roared again as I ate, I answered again. Finishing off the sardines the stag roared again. “Was that closer?” I replied. Put can back in my day bag, he roars again. “Shit, that was closer! He’s coming in!” Roaring behind me to give the illusion of distance I checked my position. Wind? Perfect! No way he can wind me! Visibility? Good bit of open bush for 50 yards all around, he won’t get past me ! Now just stay still!! Within seconds the stag appeared directly uphill, bursting into a Sunny clearing then stopping to let out a deafening roar just 40 yards away. Bringing up my suppressed 308 I place the crosshairs on his chest as he finishes roaring. Checkmate! 2 pounds on pressure and the rifle bucks. The stag does what they always do when hit with Speer 130 grin Hollows, Collapses like he’d been struck by lightning! He rolls down the hill coming to rest, his head twisted around a sapling, 30 yards away.

I sat quietly with him until his death nerves ended and then dragged him downhill to a flat area amongst the pepperwoods to butcher. He was an cull stag, 7 points and ugly with it, but this wasn’t a trophy stag area. Too many deer, and post covid in need of some culling. He was always destined for Tacos or sausages. Getting my knife out I realised it was a bit dull from the hind a shot earlier in the week. I sharpened but after only one leg removed I needed to touch it up with the steel. Standing sharpening my knife I heard the stag on the north side of the saddle start roaring. “Is he getting closer?” Getting back to butchering I had thoughts of running into that stag on my way out, with butchered stag on my back. I placed my rifle within easy reach, just in case.

The second hind leg came off a bit easier, and went straight into my Huntech daybag. Now the backsteaks I thought as I rolled the stag onto his stomach. I’d switched to my Victorinox knife out of frustration and had got the first first backsteak off when the bush shook. “Woof!!” A stag ! Fuck! Knew it!

Jumping over the stag I snatch up my 308, letting out a bark and roar as I landed. Closing the bolt I stepped out from behind a pepper wood. The stag stood confused trying to figure out what I was, my roar had worked. 45 yards away, just yards from where I ate my sardines was a 10 pointer almost glowing in the sun.

At the shot he collapsed without a flinch, rolling into an awkward mess!! I stood watching, checking and trying to take in what had just happened! I’ve just shot two stags from one spot !! This was going to be a two trip load. Best Day Ever!
