Heavyweight

A/N: Okay so I've had this idea floating around for a long while. This is inspired by Commitment Issues written by the lovely @coweye. I'm not a Benny person but this series really got me hooked. If you haven't read it yet, I highly recommend it. This was also inspired by "Emily" by James Arthur (YT link below) and this whole music video formulated in my head but I really wanted to write this so the challenge was to translate this music video in my head into a fic. The music video, I imagined more like intercuts and no dialogue at all. Basically a montage of key parts of the fight and also him warming up and getting ready for the fight and slo mo shots. I can go on and on about how I imagined this music video so let me stop there lol, but I hope this also gives the same feel that I've been going for. Also, thanks to @musings-of-a-rose for beta reading this for me! Enjoy!

Rating: T? (for violence)

Word Count: 1517

Plot: Benny has a lot weighing on him.

Contains: mild violence? (MMA fighting), a little blood, mentions of pregnancy and birthing

Benny keeps his head down, focusing on his hands as his brother carefully wraps them.

"How does that feel?" Will asks.

Benny forms a fist and then opens his hand back up, flexing it back and forth to test the tightness and comfortability.

"Feels good," Benny nods.

While waiting for his fight, Benny warms up to keep himself distracted. After some stretching and doing some mitt work with Will, he jumps rope for a bit while trying to keep his mind clear, counting each jump as he makes it. Counting is a method Will uses to stay grounded and focused. It’s never worked for Benny but he’ll try just about anything right now.

Minutes before it's time for him to walk out, he takes a few moments to himself. Will leaves him alone with just his thoughts and there are more of them than usual. He pulls out a sonogram out of his locker and looks at it. He silently makes a little prayer and finishes just in time when Will interrupts.

"Hey, you're up."

Benny turns to look back at his brother and nods before kissing the picture and putting it away.

"You ready for this?" Will asks, grabbing both sides of his face.

"Hell yeah," Benny nods.

Will lays a gentle slap on Ben's face before gripping his shoulders.

"Hell yeah, you got this. Come on!"

The brothers walk down the wide empty hallway. The plain white walls and overhead fluorescent lighting makes it look sterile. As they continue making their way, they pass under a flickering bulb.

"From Red Feather Lakes, Colorado, standing six foot three, weighing in at 195 pounds... Ben Miller!"

When they enter the venue, the crowd goes crazy. Rock music fills the space and bright lights flash. The venue is sold out and "Benny" can be heard chanting. Ben's chest puffs out and his stance tall as his eyes are only focused on the octagon while he makes his way inside the cage. He's even tuned out all the noise and staying in fight mode.

When he gets inside the cage, he loosens up his limbs while waiting for his opponent. Will says something to him from his corner and he nods while staring down the guy on the opposite side of the ring. Ben makes his way to the center where the ref is. After quickly reciting the rules, they bump gloves and the bell goes off.

Round 1:

The men start dancing around each other, feeling each other out. They both take turns testing out their jabs, seeing how the other would react. The crowd roars when Benny gets the first hit. Benny catches a hook and stumbles back before falling. His face hits the mat and his opponent gets right on top of him. Before he can react, another blow hits his cheek.

"Arms up, Benny! Protect your head!" Will shouts.

Benny blocks the next hit when he finally brings his arms up. He curls up on his side while also protecting his midsection.

“Don’t give him your back!”

Benny is able to turn over onto his back but his opponent tries to mount him. Benny uses his legs to put some distance between them, preventing his opponent from getting the advantage. The opponent swoops for a hook but Benny is able to quickly roll away and get back on his feet. The crowd cheers at his recovery.

The two are back dancing.

Round 2:

Benny catches a kick and with his height advantage, brings up the leg and makes his opponent lose balance. His opponent hops on one leg trying to stay up as he swings at Benny, eating a jab or two but he’s unaffected.

The leg gets yanked from under Benny’s arm and he gets push kicked, causing him to take a few steps back. Both now have their hands up, anticipating each other's next move. His opponent throws a few jabs, testing his reach as Benny dodges them.

"Come on, Benny! Stop fucking around!" Will screams.

Benny cautiously inches closer to the man in front of him and gets a jab in. Feeling more confident, Benny takes another step and throws a cross which gets dodged. Feeling bold, Benny charges at him, wrapping his arms around his hips and trying to take him down. His opponent throws hammer fists at his back trying to get him off. Instead, Benny lifts him up and throws him down on the mat. Whistles and applause emerge from the crowd.

Round 3:

Benny's gloves are over his head and face as he gets plummeted with punches. He finds his back against the cage. As he tries to get away, his opponent's right fist collides with his face right as the bell rings, making Benny stumble back, almost completely losing his footing if it wasn't for the support behind him. By the look of the offender's face, his advances didn't produce the result he was hoping for. He was sure that would knock Benny out, especially after the countless blows. Will isn't the only one with a hard noggin.

"Fuck!" Benny shouts and then makes his way back to his corner with clenched fists and jaw.

"Fuck!" he echoes as Will wipes his bruised and bloodied face down with a towel.

"Hey," Will starts.

Benny is staring down the man on the opposite side as Will cleans up the new cut on his cheek and continues to coach him. His opponent looks back just as intensely as both of their chests rapidly rise and fall.

"Benny! Are you listening?" Will smacks his face.

"Yeah, stay on the ground."

"Look at me," Will says.

"Hey, look at me!" he repeats and forces his brother to make eye contact. "You got this, okay? I know you have a lot going on in here-" he says pointing to the top of his head. "And a lot going on here too," now pointing to his heart.

"But don't worry about that," Will continues. "Because she's gonna know her daddy is a contender. You owe yourself this last fight to go out like the fucking champ that you are. Do you hear me?"

Benny nods.

"You got this," Will reminds him. "Now finish this!"

Round 4:

Benny nods again, but with more assurance behind it. He then lets out a roaring scream while punching his gloves together. He jumps up and puts his fists up, ready and charged up to continue the fight. Bobbing and weaving, bouncing side to side, he makes his way closer to his opponent. After touching gloves, the bell rings immediately and he instinctively dodges the jab thrown at him and counters one with his own, hitting his opponent in the ribs, quickly followed by a hook to his liver. His opponent stumbles before falling.

Benny jumps on top of him, successfully mounting him and then rains punches down his face and head. His opponent curls in as he protects himself, allowing Benny an opportunity to slip behind him. With Benny's long legs wrapped around his opponent's waist, he's able to slip an arm around his neck after a few attempts.

"Yes! You got this!" Will shouts while shaking the cage.

After successfully putting the man in a headlock, Benny arches back, holding his torso down while pulling back on his head, stretching the opponent out. The crowd goes wild.

"BEN-NY! BEN-NY!"

The chanting encourages Benny and he uses all his might to keep his opponent straightened out as he continues to put more pressure on his neck. The thrashing continues in his arms.

"Put him to sleep!" Will yells.

Benny grunts and gives a little more squeeze, keeping his opponent in place and holding on for his life. Finally, he feels tapping and the ref's hands on him, trying to pull him away. Benny instantly releases his defeated opponent and gets to his feet. Deafening cheers erupt and he roars as he bounces around the ring, throwing his fists in the air.

When Will jumps into the cage to celebrate his brother's win, Benny collides with him, wrapping his arms around his best corner man. A man who will eventually become the godfather to his unborn child.

Benny walks as fast as he can down the hallway with Will behind him trying to catch up, the white light above illuminating him more as he passes under them. Their pacing picks up and they're practically running at this point.

In the room, Benny is holding onto his girlfriend’s hand and coaching her through the birthing. She cries when she sees the baby, holding her against her body.

Benny cradles the wrapped newborn baby in his arms, being very careful. He stares down at her, studying every little part of her. Her eyes are barely open and her face is so small and squishy. He brings his pointer finger up and gently nudges his daughter’s fist. He smiles when she grabs onto his large finger, barely able to wrap her hand around it.

“Your daddy may have had his last fight, but I promise to never stop fighting for you.”

open to hockey muses plot: veteran goon x superstar who cannot get hurt at all costs “i’m known as a right hand slugger. anybody else wanna touch my lover?”

The blood splattered across the ice, fists bruised and lips split as the referees pulled them apart. Ben could do nothing but stare, his hand gripped in the back of another guy’s jersey. Heart pounding in his chest, it had nothing to do with the shift he was currently on. He felt his guy jostle him a bit but Ben didn’t move, planted solidly somehow on his skates. On the ice. He couldn’t tear his gaze away from the other’s face. All of this because Ben had taken a bit of a dirty hit. Nothing too bad. His helmet was only knocked off because of the way he fell. He had even gotten up as quick as he could, trying to get back into the play. The other had already dropped the gloves before Ben could grab his helmet. So he stood and watched, grabbed the guy who grabbed him and watched. He knew he’d be fine, always was, didn’t like it when someone else punched him in the side of the head though. The ache was only rivaled by the want. The way his blood all rushed from his head and he was grateful for the cup.

Finally the refs shoved each other away, told them to fuck off and dished out penalties. Ben watched the other skate the entire way. Fuck, he was fucked. The game went on.

They won. Ben’s goal in OT.

The locker room was insane and he could only stare at him through the chaos. The screaming, the happiness, the tears he saw Mikey try to hide. Loser. Ben couldn’t even breathe properly he wanted to check the other over so bad.

“Hey.” Ben finally grinned when he approached the other. Head ducked down so the other could hear him. “You a right hand slugger, eh?”

Bill Denbrough

I like Bill! His relationship with Georgie is very sweet and as I mention in his old ref I probably would've done exactly what he did if it meant I could find my sibling (and as an only child who could've had a younger brother I really feel for him,,,,). He also looks like such a dad in the 2019 movie and that's great

In IT Venomverse (yes that's a thing now if you haven't checked out my status update) he's married to Mike and Stan, and together they have 3 kids; Harper Denbrough (BillXStan), Noel Hanlon (MikeXBill) and Eileen Uris (MikeXStan)

Mike Hanlon

Mike is such a good character,,,,I love his relationship with his dad in the book and he's just a great guy in general. I would've loved to see more of him in Chapter 1 (I do wish he was the history nerd instead of Ben but hey I can headcanon that they're history nerds together) but I did enjoy the scenes he was in. I still don't know how to feel about him being a substance abuser in Chapter 2 but if that's how he figures out the Ritual of Chüd I guess it works??? Idk I'm just happy to see Mike get more screen time in general he deserves it In IT Venomverse he's married to Bill and Stan, and together they have 3 kids; Harper Denbrough (BillXStan), Noel Hanlon (MikeXBill) and Eileen Uris (MikeXStan)

I decided to give his adult design the scars just because I thought it'd look cool? Also his adult design is spooked since he's the only Loser that doesn't come back to Derry and I wanted to hint at that (it's a good thing the Featurette came out when it did cause it gave us a clearer reference of adult Stan after he gets the phone call and I needed that for this ref) I really like Stan! His dry sarcasm is funny and idk I just find him interesting. Also, that scene at the end of the movie where he says he hates Bill but then breaks out into laughter??? That was really cute. It's gonna be hard watching his death in Chapter 2 ;;; In IT Venomverse he's married to Bill and Mike, and together they have 3 kids; Harper Denbrough (BillXStan), Noel Hanlon (MikeXBill) and Eileen Uris (MikeXStan)

God Ben.......I love Ben. He's such a sweetheart and he loves Bev so much it makes my heart swell!!!!! I've been rereading the IT book in the hopes I'll have it finished before I go see Chapter 2 and there's a part where he whispers 'Beverly Hanscom' a few times and blushes super hard and I just???? Ben you are a treasure I can't wait for more Benverly moments in Chapter 2,,,, I know they get married and Bev gets pregnant after they defeat IT in the Miniseries and they leave Derry together in the book so that's awesome In IT Venomverse he and Beverly are married with 2 kids; Cosette Hanscom and Toby Marsh

Whenever I rewatch the scenes where she gets his poem or signs his yearbook I get teary-eyed, and just having her find the poem again in the first teaser trailer got me emotional all over again,,,, I can't wait to see her interactions with Ben in Chapter 2 and I ALSO can't wait to see her beat the shit out of her abusive husband yet again???? God ok,,,,,,I know I mention in Eddie's ref that his death is gonna make me cry but Richie's reaction to the whole thing for sure WILL kill me. The Featurette made me sad because seeing Richie being so desperate that Mike AND Ben had to hold him back is just. Jesus. I already know my ass is gonna be crying in the theater because just THINKING about the Losers makes me tear up for no reason at all so when I see a sobbing Richie and a dying Eddie desperately clinging to each other and Richie having a breakdown over his death on the big screen I'll be a gotdamn mess!!!! IT Venomverse is honestly just gonna be a way for me to cope after I watch it. I still can't believe I didn't catch them throwing in Eddie's death scene in the trailer until I watched it a few times,,,, ANDY YOU'RE GONNA KILL ME ANYWAYS I love that Richie is still wearing funky patterned shirts even as an adult. He's my fashion icon and I love it,,,,whenever I wear a shirt that makes me feel like a gay dad at a BBQ I thank Richie for being my muse In IT Venomverse he and Eddie are married with 2 kids; Gwen Kaspbrak and Seth Tozier (yes, Seth's name is a reference to Seth Green who played young Richie in the Miniseries!)

* I gave him central heterochromia because I gave him blue eyes based on what he has in the book but he has brown eyes in the movie so I just said fuck it and used both :3c Oh god Eddie............Eds..........Spaghetti Man..........I'm not ready for Chapter 2 SPECIFICALLY because of what's gonna happen to him. I love Eddie and I know for sure his death is gonna break me. Moving away from that emotional hell, I'm really happy with the casting they did for Adult!Eddie!! The adult Losers are on point anyways but Eddie's is like WOW. On another side note, Miniseries Adult!Eddie is a cutie and I love him so much In IT Venomverse he and Richie are married with 2 kids; Gwen Kaspbrak and Seth Tozier

T.J. Watt is showing he’s more than just J.J.’s little brother

T.J. Watt has been a star for the Steelers and could vault himself into the Defensive Player of the Year race.

It’s too bad that it might have taken another injury to his brother for T.J. to get noticed. Retired defensive end Stephen White explains why the Steelers’ young pass rusher is the real deal.

Earlier this season while I was working on Nick Bosa’s ”post-draft breakdown,” I noticed that both he and his brother, Joey, had at least three sacks at that point in the season. That got me a little curious, so I decided to check in on the other dynamic duo of edge rushing brothers, J.J. and his “little” brother T.J. Watt, to see what kind of seasons they were having statistically. That’s when I noticed that both of them also had at least three sacks after the fifth week of the season.

I watch all of the games every week, and it was apparent that all four guys were playing well, beyond just their sack totals. I started to muse that there was a good chance all four of them would make Pro Bowl at the end of this year.

If it were to happen and two sets of brothers were named to the Pro Bowl all at practically the same position, that would be unprecedented. Both J.J. and T.J. Watt made it last year, and Joey Bosa was selected in 2017. Back when I was writing Nick’s breakdown, I thought he might end up having a hard time breaking through just because he is a rookie. Since then, however, he has turned it on.

Of that foursome, T.J. Watt is the least heralded

While his big brother was drafted 11th overall, and both Bosas went in the top three, T.J. hung around until the 30th pick. It is worth noting that T.J., who is in his third year in the NFL, has a career high of 13 sacks, which is a half a sack more than Joey’s career high of 12.5.

Sacks are not the only measurement of an edge rusher’s impact. But what I’m saying here is while you may hear a little more about the other guys, T.J. definitely belongs in the conversation with them, too.

Fast forward to this past Sunday and the Bosas certainly did their part to keep pushing closer to a Pro Bowl berth. Nick was absolutely dominant in the 49ers’ rout of the Panthers, with three sacks and an interception, while Joey showed out in the Chargers’ comeback win over the Chicago Bears in which he posted two sacks of his own. Their combined five sacks broke the NFL record for sacks credited to brothers on the same day of the season.

Care to hazard a guess at who previously owned that record?

Yep, that’s right. The Watts had four sacks combined in Week 5 of last season to tie the record with Jimmy and Toby Williams, who also accomplished the feat back in 1985.

Unfortunately, Sunday wouldn’t go nearly as well for the Watt family.

J.J. left the Texans’ game in the middle of the second quarter after suffering an injury. A few hours after the game, he took to social media to announce that the injury would knock him out for the rest of the season. I can’t imagine how disappointing that news must have been for him after he bounced back from multiple injuries in the prime of his career. Selfishly, I was also a little upset because I just love watching the guy play football.

However, injuries are a part of the game, as anyone who has played will tell you, and the show must always go on. While I am sure T.J. was pretty bummed about his brother’s injury as well, he still had a game of his own to play on Monday night.

T.J. Watt biggest play against the Dolphins was a three-step masterpiece

As it turns out, the winless Dolphins still have some fight in them even with such a terrible start to their season. After an interception and a turnover on downs on the Steelers’ first two series, T.J. and his team found themselves down 14-0 right out of the gate on Monday night. The Steelers eventually got the lead in the third quarter, but it was a tight game throughout. Not only could T.J. not afford to be distracted by his brother’s situation, he would need to turn in one of his best performances of the year to help close out the game.

I want to point out probably the most impactful play he made in the second half on Monday night.

By the middle of the fourth quarter, the Steelers had pulled ahead 24-14 and were looking to close the door. The Dolphins had the ball at their own 28-yard line after their defense forced a punt.

The Dolphins came out with their quarterback, Ryan Fitzpatrick, in shotgun with two receivers and a tight end to his right, one wide receiver to his left, and the running back offset to his left beside him.

T.J. Watt was lined up at his usual spot on the left defensive edge in a nine-technique outside of the tight end. On the snap, tight end Mike Gesicki went right into his route straight up the field, leaving Dolphins right tackle Jesse Davis all by his lonesome to block Watt in space.

In about three seconds, here’s everything Watt did to help the Steelers secure the victory.

Step 1: Used a quick move to get by the OL

Watt got off the ball and took five hard steps in a flash to sell a speed rush and get Davis to bail out of his pass set.

On that fifth step, Watt planted his foot in the ground hard while simultaneously clubbing Davis’ inside (left) shoulder with Watt’s inside (right) hand. In one fluid motion, Watt executed what was essentially a jump cut inside of Davis while doing a quick arm-over with his outside (left) arm literally right over Davis’ head.

Step 2: Got to the quarterback

Watt was so quick with it that Davis couldn’t stop his feet to try to recover and step back. Instead, Davis could only manage to try lunge as Watt slipped by him inside, barely making contact with Watt at all. At the very last minute, Dolphins right guard Chris Reed noticed Watt had beaten Davis inside, but with Watt turning on the jets, Reed just couldn’t get over quick enough to help.

Step 3: Forced and recovered a fumble

Unsatisfied with just getting a sack, Watt made the most of his opportunity and reached with his inside (right) hand first for Fitzpatrick’s jersey, then for the ball. Watt snatched the football right out of Fitzpatrick’s hands and took him to the ground. Watt ended up flipping over with the ball securely in his hands, and it all happened so quickly that it took a second for it to register with the refs what had just happened.

In the blink of an eye, Watt had forced a turnover and nipped that Fitzmagic in the bud.

The Steelers’ offense took over from the Dolphins’ 22-yard line and went on to extend their lead to 17 points by making field goal. That was definitely the kind of play, both in terms of skill needed to make it and impact, that you would expect a Pro Bowl-type player to make.

T.J. Watt could find himself in the Defensive Player of the Year race

Well, my daydream of two sets of brothers making the Pro Bowl may be over after J.J.’s injury, but don’t be surprised if T.J. Watt not only still makes it, but also jumps into the Defensive Player of the Year discussion by the end of the season, too. His two sacks in Week 8 gave him six for the season, which is just off the seven that both of the Bosa brothers have now.

With Ben Roethlisberger out for the year, if the 3-4 Steelers some how manage to claw their way back into the playoff hunt, you can bet that T.J. will have been a big part of that effort. Even if they don’t make the playoffs, there is a very good chance that T.J. will still go on to have the kind of monster year that would make him hard to ignore in any DPOY conversation.

It is a shame that it might have taken another injury to his brother for T.J. to escape from his shadow, considering how well T.J. has played in his own right since being drafted in 2017. But if it is the case that you hadn’t been paying much attention to T.J. until now, this is the perfect time to get familiar because that guy is a friggin’ beast on the field.

Yes, T.J. isn’t quite on J.J.’s level, but he is a damn good player, nonetheless. He’s the real deal, not just a dude riding his big brother’s coattails. Everyone would be wise to recognize that, because it is looking more and more likely that T.J. is going to be kicking ass for a very long time in this league.

This weeks musings

Another reason to hate the 17-game season is we can’t break up the season in quarters anymore. This should have been my first quarter report. Not the 4.25 report. Oh well, it is what it is. The Packers are 3-1 after four games. They have been 3-1 or 4-0 in all three of head coach Matt LaFleur’s three seasons.

The Packers have gotten to that mark in three different ways. In 2019 they eked out wins over the Bears, Vikings and Broncos before falling to the Eagles in week four. And last year they stormed out of the gate. They scored over 40 points their first two games and over 30 the next two to reach 4-0. This year, they got blown out in their first game and I think steadily improved in winning the next three games. And they did so battling injuries, something they didn’t have in 2019 and 2020.

Looking to make a few bucks on Packers’ games? Quatro Casino is a good place to start. Established in 2009 it is widely regarded as one of the leaders in the online gambling industry. The Packers may be flying under the radar a little, making it a good time to jump in.

Not good enough

Tom Silverstein thinks the Packers could easily be 1-3 the way they are playing. I find that to be a stretch. He thinks the Packers beat three cupcakes to get to 3-1. I agree the Lions are a cupcake, but winning in San Francisco is not an easy task. He says the 49ers were injured and because they lost to their rival Seahawks on Sunday it proves they aren’t any good. Well, the Packers were without their best offensive lineman, their second best offensive lineman and their best pass rusher. That’s a wash.

Then he claims the refs errored in calling offsides on the Steelers when they blocked a field goal and returned it for a touchdown. That’s a lie. But the refs did error when they didn’t call tripping on T.J. Watt on Aaron Rodgers. That took a touchdown off the board. Yes, Big Ben did miss two long passes. So did Aaron Rodgers.

The Packers were again without their top two offensive lineman. And when Jaire Alexander went down they were without their top two defensive players. Getting to 3-1 is a minor miracle.

The Packers are likely to lose more than three games this year because their second half schedule is brutal. This team just needs to be peaking in January. Nothing to be concerned about. Yet.
