Colors
11/7/20; Inspired by Colors by Stella Jang; One shot, not an excerpt. Implications of SA and suicide.
“What’s your color?”
Bright tangerine settles on curious cobalt, tiny, thin fingers reaching out to poke a moist chubby cheek. The boy makes a sound of dismay, eyes narrowing as the girl smiles, settling beside him. He doesn’t answer and she doesn’t ask again, turns to him a beat later and says:
“You look blue. Like your eyes! Are you blue?”
When she’s met with a look of confusion, she claps her hands together excitedly, only to quickly stop at his shrinking away, replacing the motion with wiggling toes instead. “Sad! Colors mean a lot of different things, like feelings! Blue is really vers- ver-“ Round features scrunch up in annoyance, tiny knuckles knocking and rocking against each other in thought before she huffs, turning back to the younger child- “Dad said it has a lot of meanings, it’s very big,” and she’s sure to stretch out her arms to show just how big, watches as blue follows, his tears and hiccups lessening.
“It can be happy, like red! Red makes me happy. Kat really likes blue like the sky and blueberries and the ocean! Mom likes greens, like grass and limes and broc- broco- brocli!” She doesn’t think she said it right, but that’s okay, he seems to be listening anyway, perks at the mention of the vegetable, blue darting towards the door.
She thinks he’s gross for liking it as much as he does, but she loves him anyway.
“What do you like?” She questions curiously, fingers wiggling as she presses her palms to her knees, just as the door is nudged open, a cat forcing her way into the room.
She knows her question isn’t ignored even as blue focuses on the feline, as blue gives way to pink and grows into red with each step closer of the cat, practically glowing with it by the time she finally turns and rubs the length of her body against his drawn up legs, tiny hands quickly reaching out and running down a furry back.
She just sits in silence beside him, listening to the purrs as she looks around. It’s a moment before her attention is brought back, small hand clasped by an even smaller one, lifting her hand to the cat’s collar, a deep, vibrant-
“Purple?” Ryo asks, tilting her head in slight confusion, only for Sato to nod energetically, free hand shaking, body bouncing in place. She can’t help the grin that stretches her lips, her own body bouncing along, fingers and toes wiggling contently.
“I’m glad you’re not blue anymore.”
~
I could be red-
Gold shut tight, teeth clenched, pale face flushed with anger; Amber bright and wide, hands shaking with the force of her passion; Pink lips split in a grin, smile as infectious as the happiness radiating off of her.
-or I could be yellow-
Her smile is quick, a hand lifting to brush disobedient hair back, a soft blush peppering her cheeks as honey eyes shyly raise; Manicured hands clasp together to keep themselves from shaking, body practically buzzing with energy she can just barely contain; Carefully plucked brows furrow in thought, lips pursing as she types away into her phone, searching for the answers to satiate her curiousity.
I could be blue-
She blinks away the tears, swallows down the hiccups and tries to will away the sadness; Heat seeps into her form, tension slipping from slender shoulders as she sinks lower into fragrant water, relaxing as a cloud of calm settles atop her; Laughter spills past her lips as she looks at her friend, gaze soon latching onto another over slim shoulders and she feels her smile fading, feels warmth seeping from amber until a dead, cold stare is all he sees.
-or I could be purple-
She looks over the wall of photographs, focusing on the subjects and details as her heart swells with pride; Words spill forth too quickly to track, gushing over the faux human skull in her hands, gaze oh so adoring; *so simple*, she thinks, working diligently on the assignment, ignoring the boredom tapping away at her skull as intelligence feels wasted.
I could be green-
Small hands shake violently as she tries to will the feeling away, tries to rid herself of the memory of that dog tongue running over her hand, disgust clear in childlike features; Honey keeps finding its way to her, watches the other girl shyly tuck her hair behind her ear, the boy before her grinning, saying something that has the girl blushing and she doesn’t think she’s been so envious of a boy before this; The lie flows off her tongue smoothly like so many before it, deceit disguised with a tinkering laugh and that pretty smile.
-or pink-
“-My boyfriend, Dean!” The little girl giggles, chubby hand tightening around his own as she swings it, heart warm and light and she’s sure this is what a crush feels like; The young woman flushes, gaze demurely drifting to the side, a hand coming to hide her soft grin and she’s sure she’s nailed embarrassment as the boy smiles; Red lips curve into a slight smirk, half-lidded amber coy in how they flick down and up once more, flirtatiously traversing the length of the body before her.
-or black-
She adjusts the blazer, manicured hands tugging at the collar before moving to fix her hair, then her skirt, changing and adjusting and fixing until she’s the shining example of the mature young woman she’s meant to be; Her mother inspects the dress, a fusion of Japanese and Western fashion, elder hands coming to clasp her face once she’s done, beaming as she states, “The Matsui women make gorgeous, elegant brides.”; Her hands shake, smile struggling to stay plastered on her face as disobedient tears stream down her face, gaze staring unblinkingly though her twin, through one of the many black polka dots decorating her shirt, sinking into the growing void to block out the weight on her skirt- She feels the abrupt disconnect as the words settle, feels the moment liquid floods her eyes but not its overflow, pictures Dean so small and alone and hurt, hurting so much that he tried to- to actually leave and it feels like her organs are melting, like they’re being siphoned from her until she’s nothing but an empty, void husk-
-or white-
Too young for self-awareness to have settled, the little girl runs and leaps and bounds between states, taking in all manners of sensory, pure and absorbent like an unused sponge.
I can be every color you like.

In Love and Deep Water
Movies watched in 2023
In Love and Deep Water (2023, Japan)
Director: Yusuke Taki
Writer: Yuji Sakamoto
Mini-review:
I enjoyed this a lot. It's far from Yuji Sakamoto's best work, but even his lesser scripts still have above-average quality. I must admit I didn't really care for the murder-mystery part of the story, although the final twist did surprise me more than I expected. That being said, I definitely liked the romcom parts way more. The writing is as witty as one could expect from Sakamoto, and Ryo Yoshizawa and Aoi Miyazaki know how to play off each other. The banter between their characters is delightful. The rest of the cast is also great, and it's clear the actors had fun making this movie. On top of that, I also loved the social commentary that permeates the plot without overwhelming it. Overall, I had fun with In Love and Deep Water.

Otona Koukou / Adult High School. 7
Story: 9
Acting: 10
Chemistry: 9
Comparable to: ?
This stars the late Miura Haruma. If you haven’t seen any of his work yet then you’re missing a bunch, he was excellent. Now onto this series, which is a cute off-beat off-the-wall hilarious, but lite romcom. All character’s are well written and put in situations that are sort of dicey (risky). My only complaint is the last episode, the finale, is probably up there on the top most list of being the worst. Oof I want a redo 😫

[2020年8月9日] kahakugeki daisenshuuraku curtain call translation (touken danshi + gracia) <3
( ) = clarifications/actors' inputs, [ ] = my inputs
Nanami Hiroki: (smiling) I’m Hosokawa Gracia’s actor, Nanami Hiroki. Today, in this current moment, a single flower of miracle has bloomed. Currently, in this kind of situation, to be able to reach senshuuraku is truly no easy thing. The fact that the staff, cast, and audience, everyone, could make it bloom in the midst of their lives made this a flower of miracle. To those who are watching from far away, I offer the sincerest gratitude from everyone involved in this performance. I pray that the flower of miracle in everyone’s hearts will continue to bloom beautifully forever. Thank you for today.
~~~
Wada Takuma: Continuing, with the touken danshi cast’s messages (sharp intake of breath). [its obvious he’s trying to keep his composure.]
Hoshimoto Yuzuki: Here. Once again, I am Jizou Yukihira’s actor, Hoshimoto Yuzuki. Thank you for watching the play. A while ago, aneue said so too, that a flower of miracle has bloomed. I truly think that is because of all the visitors here, and all the people who supported us till today, and everyone who came to the theatre, all the cast, staff, and everyone involved’s efforts. About all these petals; I hope that they will reach your hearts again, and after that, I’d love for something to continue onwards*. I really love everyone in this cast, this staff, this company. I’m glad I met Jizou Yukihira. I’m glad I met Touken Ranbu. I’m grateful for all these encounters. Truly, (sniffs) thank you very much for today (bows and then gestures to Kokin.) [* as in, wanting to appear in a future sute production apart from kiden]
Tsukamoto Ryo: Playing the part of Kokindenjunotachi, I’m Tsukamoto Ryo. Really, to be able to have come this far, to have met this wonderful cast, to have met you all, to have met Kokindenjunotachi, made me really happy. I really love everyone. Thank you very much!
Ohmi Takuto: I’m Kotegiri Gou’s actor, Ohmi Takuto. Of course, I’m very thankful, very glad to have made it till here, but more than anything else, though the days fighting along with Kotegiri Gou were very harsh, I was happy precisely because of that (sniffs). I will definitely return stronger next time, so since it’ll be a long-awaited day, please support me. Thank you so much for today :D (full kotegiri gou smile).
Izaki Ryujirou: As Shishiou, I’m Izaki Ryujirou. Thanks to everyone’s overwhelming, thorough cooperation and brave determination, we were able to depart on 38 sorties. Thank you very much. Like this, to be able to stand here as Shishiou alongside Nue (pats Nue’s head), is something I think of with pride. Thank you very much for visiting us today.
Matsui Yuho: I’m Kikkou Sadamune’s actor, Matsui Yuho. Come to think of it, to be able to say a dream has come true is really a wonderful thing. I held hopes of appearing in tousute, so I’m really happy this one dream came true. That’s why my next dream is to be able to finish smoothly on tousute’s stage again with everyone’s smile. That’s my dream now. Please meet me with a smile once more (smiles). Thank you.
Sano Mashiro: I’m Nikkari Aoe’s actor, Sano Mashiro. Eh….yes…(trying to keep it together) um, it’s an unexpected coincidence* with yuho-san, but my dream came true too. For the sake…of that dream…all the effort….working hard all along….if I was unsuccessful, I would be devastated, I would be miserable, there were times I thought I’d give up (he has a tight throat and a bit of a stutter), but like the end where Jizou says “my dream, too, has become a useless flower,” and Kasen responds with kindness**, I’ve had people who supported my back, who were thoughtful, who scolded me, who fascinated me, thanks to those people, I’m standing here having my dream come true. Right. I still have another dream. From tomorrow too, I’ll work hard. Thank you for visiting and watching. [* the term mashiro used is literally ダブルエン. ** ‘Kasen says words of kindness’ / Also, i missed out a few words because he was so near to crying i couldn't make them out :( ]
Umetsu Mizuki: I’m Yamanbagiri Chougi’s actor, Umetsu Mizuki. Due to various people’s strength, we finally reached here. I’m feeling immensely proud of the fact the lamp* was protected all along, but before that; are you watching? (laughs) This is tousute!! This is the power of theatre!!! The full extent of that fact is sinking in right now. Thank you so much for coming today. [*I thought ume-chan mean ひ as in 火, but 灯 makes more sense given the title and the lamps’ significance to this story.]
Wada Takuma: I’m Kasen Kanesada’s actor, Wada Takuma. Thank you for visiting today. Also, thank you to those watching the livestream. During the previous production’s, Iden’s senshuuraku’s live viewing, I saw this current production’s announcement from the theatre seat along with everyone in the audience. Ever since that moment, this has been a very, very, long-awaited work*, but, I never imagined it’d take a form where the curtain – such a form where the curtain would close halfway. Since Suemitsu-san added the word ‘lamp’ to (this) butai touken ranbu, us actors, and all those related, tried with everything we had to prevent the flame from being extinguished up till now (pauses to collect himself). We couldn’t show the vision of ‘kiden’ to everyone, but, as Yamanbagiri Chougi’s actor umetsu-kun said, the power of theatre, the stage's magnificence, is something you all have proved to us these past days. What – what do I say about today...whether to call it strange, or mysterious…… since swords have their own numbers, Kasen Kanesada is the 89th one right? (smiling) To say be able to say today is the 9th of August* (wipes tears) what kind of ironic fate is that? Somehow, I’ve got bittersweet feelings, but surely, the historical Hosokawa Tadaoki and Gracia-sama are saying “give it your all!” while pushing my back forward***. That’s what I selfishly think. At the very end of the performances, I recite a poem I wrote myself but, (deep breath) someday, for the sake of the day the work called ‘kiden’ is delivered, I will choose the moment I recite the poem. Today, I will end on this note. Truly,
(everyone) thank you for visiting us!
[*I don’t know if I could get the point across, but kuma’s saying that with more of a personal emphasis, as in he looked forward to it from the bottom of his heart. **Japanese dates are written month-day. So 9th of august = 8/9. Happy kasen kanesada day! ***kuma had so many shuddering intakes of breath, it was painful to hear again and again as I rewound for translating this.]
