everyone talks a LOT about his lyricism. And for good reason, he’s fucking brilliant. Mixing social and political commentary with religious/mythology imagery and literary references and pure fucking poetry about the nature of life and love and heartbreak.

like everyone else I’ve been freaking out about the brilliant heartbreaking lyrics. But we should all take a minute to appreciate him as a vocalist as well.

He HAS THE RANGE. The insane falsettos in who we are and anything but. The soulful belting in all things end. The way his voice can convey moments of tenderness, moments of desperation, can switch between the two, can convey it in two languages.

Think of the power and passion of Francesca followed immediately by the lullaby-like gentleness of I, Carrion (Icarian).

Anyway I’m a classically trained singer and pianist and I just have a lot of thoughts about how his vocal talents and musicality are way underrated.

analysing hozier songs in relation to good omens season 2, specifically i, carrion (icarian)

i kind of see this song as a two sided poem between aziraphale and crowley

all the way up to the second verse, the lyrics could be interpreted as crowley, trying to explain what has happened to him. he has just questioned god, right now he isn't fully aware of the consequences of his actions. he "feel[s] lighter than [he has] in so much time". he is liberated from the weight of contributing to the end of humanity. but he slowly realises that he is going to be cast out of heaven.

the pre-chorus goes "and though i burn, how could i fall / when i am lifted by every word you say to me?". crowley still deeply trusts god.

with the start of the second verse, aziraphale picks up the conversation. he tells crowley that he finally understands the role he played in the creation of the universe, that god is not the only one creating beauty.

the bridge brings crowley back, he doesn't have his angel wings anymore, he never will but it doesn't matter anymore. he has accepted his fall, even if he doesn't believe it is justified.

and the song ends in the most beautiful way with "if I should fall, on that day / i only pray, don't fall away from me". this sums up both crowley and aziraphale's feelings: whatever happens to them, they will be fine as long as they are together

by the way i know that these songs have absolutely no link to good omens (apart from the biblical references), i just think the similarities between the stories are really interesting

hastily scrawled warning note – if you could go back and change one decision you made in the game, what would it be? (2!!!) i already answered this here, but a second, minor thing is:

I would ever have named any companions ever. 'Cause you can never undo it! Like yeah, you can name them something else, but once they've been nicknamed they can never go back to an un-nicknamed state – the best you can get is Wretched Mog (Wretched Mog) which kinda sucks.

exceptional short story – what exceptional stories, if any, would you consider canon for your oc(s)? I'm going to do this for the Apologist, given that I haven't done any with Avery (yet?). And there are quite are lot which are "canon" in that they don't contradict any Apologist lore, but they're also not important to his character/story at all – so I won't include those. So, in chronological order:

A Columbidaean Commotion, in which a young Apologist (the Inquisitive Vandal, at the time) manages to help secure the pigeons' place in the Neath just as he's securing his own. (and he picks up a pet!)

The Shallows, in which the Apologist makes some Mistakes and leans a little further into Steadfast in response.

A Devil's Due takes place when the Apologist is very much under the wing of devils, and begins to seed the idea that they may not actually like him back. (might replay this actually...)

For All the Saints Who From Their Labours Rest/The Brass Grail both take place at similar times, with the Apologist gaining somewhat of an affinity for Grand Devils (which never really fades).

Flint happens pretty directly after the Apologist's year of Seeking and contextualises his ending as a triumph over the obsession rather than a failure to follow through.

Caveat Emptor is when he's becoming a Correspondent in earnest, and the existence of the Vicomte further inspires his study.

Cricket, Anyone? gives him the idea of nontraditional forms of the Correspondence which later becomes integral to his style.

The Path of Blood and Smoke is another journey which threatens to influence the Apologist towards cruelty, which he this time manages to overcome.

Shades of Yesterday gets him a neat pen.

The Bloody Wallpaper establishes a deep-seated hatred of the Manager

The Sinking Synod establishes him as an official bishop, which he later uses when establishing the church at Burrow.

Homecoming is another Spices scheme foiled, cementing their (friendly?) rivalry.

The Icarian Cup – Oops! Dawnburnt!

Adornment is the beginning of a relationship(?) which defines the Apologist going forwards.

In lieu of a week in the woods

just got back from 6+ days off the grid, swimming, drinking tea, porch sittin’, and generally revisiting old stomping grounds. somehow it still wasn’t long enough.

Reading picked out some specific weird old trade paperbacks to read at the cottage, and successfully finished one: margaret atwood’s lady oracle. one of those books where I will be thinking about it forever, but not necessarily because I enjoyed it? good prose moments, good turns of phrase or moments of clear perception, but i found the main character sort of perplexing—the bits of old Toronto, vintage mid century canadian childhood and adolescence, were probably what will stick with me. That and the way that I think it was trying to get psychonanalytic but, in classic 80s feminist fiction style, it didn’t make a ton of sense. also the fatphobia? like, experimenting with the pov of someone with intense body dysmorphia / weight shaming / internalized fatphobia felt unempathetic? like i was supposed to be impressed or titillated or surprised by this choice, that the book would even consider having a main character who was fat. period typical, sure, part of the mid century setting, sure, but also like. gratuitous.

also finished italo calvino’s the baron in the trees, and a.k. larkwood’s the unspoken name, and started the audiobook for the long way to a small angry planet. Also began my harrow the ninth reread, and wow this book is good. and even more so when you can follow what’s happening.

listening only the fact that I did spend so long literally in the woods has prevented me from having in-depth thoughts and feelings about hozier’s unreal earth. more to come as I sit with it longer, but so far—strong positive feelings. some new ground, some old ground, and some things that bridge the two nicely. worth listening to with headphones or however you can pick up all the layers in the mix. I really like ‘Icarian carrion’ on this listen.

watching watched a couple of episodes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds this evening, since being back— ‘lost in translation,’ and the lower decks cross-over. loved seeing boimler and mariner in the flesh, and the different gags they fit into that one, despite the fact that one of the things I’ve liked most about this season has been the show gradually giving time to some of the more philosophical questions trek can explore—but lower decks does that too, sometimes better, and these two episodes back to back fit pretty well.

playing it was a very boardgame forward week at the cottage— clue, PARKS, and a new one for me, shadows over Camelot. not an uncomplicated setup, but some of the tie-ins to actual arthurian themes (the grail quest keeps pulling players in but it will grind them up and spit them out! the next generation are the ones who survive!) caught and held my enjoyment when the different mechanics threatened to lose it. I also tuned in to d&d remotely for a bit, though my connection was bad, and my rig was rated ‘haunted’ by the other players. they could hear crickets over the voice chat 😌🌲

making sewed a new patch onto my jacket and moved another two—picture to follow. didn’t do any of the mending I brought, but have had thoughts about what makes sense and what I might buy to supplement the projects. new fabric store on my commute deserves a visit, methinks.

working on truly the answer here is ‘not overthinking or delaying out of perfectionism’. which I have already done. finished all but the last eng 385 essay feedback, finished proofing for joe and responding to the department’s newsletter person for the piece she’s writing; still have to finish this letter of recommendation and these two (2!?) chapter drafts. the point is to be able to write a final sentence and just. let them go. learn how to not stop shy of finishing something. learn how to bring something (anything) to a state of some kind of completion. sure, right. sure.

My Unreal Unearth Debrief

This is the best I have ever heard this man sing. My god. His resonance and strength. The high notes. The power and energy. I’m still fucking processing his belt and flips and range holy shit.

My absolute top songs based on combo of sound and lyrics: De Selby 1 & 2, Who We Are, To Someone From A Warm Climate, Anything But, Abstract, and First Light

Honorable mentions: Butchered Tongue, Nth, Son of Nyx, Icarian

I think the strongest song in terms of album cohesiveness goes to Who We Are, but First Light is the one that pulls everything together.

Vocally, the best songs are Anything But, De Selby (2 in particular), Abstract, First Light, and Who We Are for me but all of them were the strongest vocals I’ve ever heard from him

My favorite song was Abstract (Psychopomp). Paired with his explanation I think it’s absolutely gorgeous and I love the musical storytelling they did with vocals and production. Same praise for First Light but there’s just something about Abstract that takes the top spot for me.

I, of course, loved the pre-released tracks but genuinely think he saved the strongest stuff for release night. That may be because I’m just familiar with the pre-released stuff. I thought Francesca and All Things End worked really well within the larger album structure in particular. Eat Your Young has to be my favorite of the pre-released albums but was really jarring to hear right after I, Carrion. Which, to be fair, is a cool effect of that ordering and furthers the song’s message.

Butchered Tongue. Just incredible. It was carefully written and in typical Hozier style, made interesting parallels out of different colonialisms and genocides. I won’t say much more here because I think the lyrics just speak for themselves so beautifully.

Son of Nyx was not at all what I expected but the production is incredibly creative, the instrumentals were gorgeous, and between De Selby(s) and First Light, it’s one of the storytelling pillars of the album and the hell narrative

I, Carrion (Icarian) was interesting and I thought the lyrics were gorgeous. Both of the “softer” love songs on the album (Icarian and First Time) are gut-wrenching and beautiful. I also love the stripped down feel to Icarian and I think he wrote it with his girlfriend? which having heard the song has to be the most romantic thing I’ve ever heard.

Anything But is some of the funniest shit I’ve ever heard

Stylistically, I’ve always liked the rock and acoustic feeling pieces but I loved that he added some of the funk influence to the album. All of the production felt different from his normal work in a cool, good way and I really think he pulled off the multi-genre concept incredibly well.

I have only one criticism of the album and it’s that I think he should’ve included Through Me. But, there’s always at least one good song that gets lost on the EP in the album cycle (rip NFWMB 🫡)

First Light and the “moral,” if I can derive one takeaway from the whole thing, which will be oversimplified because holy shit these songs, is that there is beauty in meaning in the cycle of light and dark, and that destruction and death are not something to be feared but rather something that can deepen how we understand the world. It is in turmoil that we can look to and understand our obligations to others and it is only by fully embracing all components of existence, including death and nothingness, that we can understand the art of being. We also must confront when death and destruction are objectively wrong and out of balance and reach out to each other in a work of communal preservation, which ultimately becomes our best way of self-preservation.

I try not to think about these things because like, what's done is done. Whatever decision I made at the time was right for the time, and I didn't know what I do now/feel the way I do now in the past. Though once I did reset the Homecoming ES because I didn't like the ending I got.

That being said, I'd go back to that very old story "Plotting Against the Masters" and change the answer to "for the cause." Just a small thing.

I only play exceptional stories with my main character Orsinio. In general, most ES would've been something he did on a random Thursday unless it was something I really didn't care for. I've also played uh, a lot of ES!

RP PET PEEVES: I really, really, really don't like instant fix-its. Please never attempt to fix my muses. Yes, they're broken. I like them that way. And when our muses encounter a problem, don't instantly fix that either. The journey's the reward. Give our characters something to work towards.

EXPERIENCE/HOW MANY YEARS: uuhh... I started rp in school, like literally IN class with my bestie and a little notebook; on tumblr it's been over 10 years and I switched from Doctor Who to fandomless to Doctor Who/Life on Mars to fandomless again.

FLUFF, ANGST, or SMUT: it's probably futile to try and claim it's anything but angst. But honestly I like fluff too, because it nicely offsets the angst. And I wish I was better at writing smut but alas I suck. And not in a good way.

LONG OR SHORT REPLIES: Both have their time and place. Conversations benefit from shorter replies with fewer embellishments, if I wanna set the scene or there's a lot of action I tend to write longer replies. Both is super valid tho.

Hrngg I refuse to pick one favorite. I have several. You will regret asking me this.

Okay. Well. So.

First and foremost, from I Carrion, Icarian. This song has always struck me as VERY Crowley-coded in general, specifically with its references to Falling, but these lyrics just punch me in the gut in relation to him; it very much reads as Crowley finding hope anew in Aziraphale after his Fall, finding something to be his home now that Heaven is gone to him; finding all of that in the angel he met on the wall of Eden.

And though I burn, how could I Fall? / When I am lifted by every word you say to me / If anything could fall at all, it's the world / That falls away from me

And then we have Unknown / Nth. UGH. Y'all. This song makes me bawl. These lyrics in particular sing to me as if it is Aziraphale reminiscing over how happy Crowley was as an angel, and how different he is as a demon; how far he is from his stars, and how much that makes his own light dim.

You called me angel for the first time, / My heart leapt from me / You smile now, I can see its pieces still stuck in your teeth / And what's left of it, I listen to it tick / Every tedious beat going unknown as any angel to me

These lyrics, contrastingly, sing to me like Crowley, doing anything and everything for Aziraphale and never asking for anything in return. And yet still feeling like he can't measure up to what HE believes is Aziraphale's idealized version of him; when, truly, the only thing Aziraphale wants back from Crowley's angel self, is for him to be happy again. To give him back the stars. (By the way - go look up the true meaning of this song, it's astounding.)

That I'd walk so far just to take / The injury of finally knowing you

SHRIKE. Y'all I have so so SO many feelings about this song but these lyrics. THESE LYRICS. They just SCREAM Crowley's confession. The words hung above / But never would form especially, and him feeling like it is his final cry to get Aziraphale to see how much he loves him, and how much he is begging him to stay, to be an us. And when Aziraphale 'forgives' him, Crowley becomes the shrike.

Coincidentally, shrikes are frequent hunters of serpents; as if Crowley is the shrike to his own serpent, and to Aziraphale's thorn. Impaling himself on it to be the shrike he THINKS Aziraphale wants. It's devastating.

The words hung above / But never would form / Like a cry at the final / Breath that is drawn / Remember me, love / When I'm reborn / As the shrike to your sharp / And glorious thorn

All Things End. THE final fifteen song. THE Crowley confession song, and THE KISS song. The EVERY song. Every lyric just screams Nothing Lasts Forever. They have never known a silence like the one fallen over them; they have never watched their futures darken in a single tear; they want it to go easy by being somebody's fault, but they've gone long enough to know that isn't what they want.

Just ... God, that entire song. It strikes right to the gut, and it is absolutely destructive in that way.

Finally (even though I could go on and on and ON), we of course have Too Sweet, which Hozier arguably wrote while talking to a depressed, divorced Crowley in a bar. I don't even have a specific lyric; that entire song was sung by Crowley about Aziraphale, full stop. It's Hozier's version of Somebody To Love by Queen.

Literally the first mutual on the list! you were the first person I started writing with seriously when I came back to RP and I am so happy that we're still writing together now. No matter what mood I might be in or dynamic I might be looking for, you have a character to suit - even though we have our few very well-established sets that I completely adore. Outside of that, I often read your threads with other people ( @icarian-carrion 's Tisha, for example) because you do the absolute Most and I love it.

Outside of that, I love our OOC chats. I love that either of us can just pop in after a few days and be like "hey can I complain about something" and be met with a hearty YES or that we can send stupid memes. I rly appreciate u <3
