Advent

Wind whistling, as it does in winter, and I think nothing of it until

it snaps a shutter off her bedroom window, spins it over the roof and down

to crash on the deck in back, like something out of Oz. We look up, stunned—then glad

to be safe and have a story, characters in a fable we only half-believe.

Look, in my surprise I somehow split a wall, the last one in the house

we're making of gingerbread. We'll have to improvise: prop the two halves forward

like an open double door and with a tube of icing cement them to the floor.

Five days until Christmas, and the house cannot be closed. When she peers into the cold

interior we've exposed, she half-expects to find three magi in the manger,

a mother and her child. She half-expects to read on tablets of gingerbread

a line or two of Scripture, as she has every morning inside a dated shutter

on her Advent calendar. She takes it from the mantel and coaxes one fingertip

under the perforation, as if her future hinges on not tearing off the flap

under which a thumbnail picture by Raphael or Giorgione, Hans Memling or David

of apses, niches, archways, cradles a smaller scene of a mother and her child,

of the lidded jewel-box of Mary's downcast eyes. Flee into Egypt, cries

the angel of the Lord to Joseph in a dream, for Herod will seek the young

child to destroy him. While she works to tile the roof with shingled peppermints,

I wash my sugared hands and step out to the deck to lug the shutter in,

a page torn from a book still blank for the two of us, a mother and her child.

Random, but what is one misconception about Marinette that the fandom wholeheartedly believes?

Oof, this is hard, mainly bc the fandom has different sects which have um... varied opinions of Marinette. Do you mean the Miracuclass salters? The Maribat stans? Adrien-only fans or Chloe fans? Lotta variety there.

For the fandom at large I'd say... maybe that Marinette's middle class? At least in canon lmao. Her parents are definitely on the wealthier side - yes, they own a bakery, but given how they live in Paris (Marinette has her own balcony - that type of a house is pretty expensive) and the people she goes to school with (Chloe, the Mayor's daughter, resident Rich Boy Adrien Agreste, Alix who's dad works at the Luvre, etc) I'm betting Francoise Dupont is a private school which costs quite a bit of money. Especially given the ridiculous opportunities she gets (designing for a Gabriel fashion contest, for Jagged Stone and for a famous popstar's kids' band, etc). Given, I'm pretty sure the showrunners have thought through absolutely none of this, but Marinette's at the least upper middle to upper class.

Do you deny the bad stuff Adrien does??? Like when he refuses to take no for an answer to ladybug rejecting his confessions,when he crosses boundaries?, like in gladiator 2 whare he spread out that he and ladybug are a couple when they aren't???

I don't deny Adrien's flaws. I deny all the crimes the salters assign to him because he dares to disagree with their queen.

The "he refuses to take no for an answer" talking point just shows me that the people saying that have no understanding of narrative tone, because they clearly can't differentiate between what the narrative treats as a joke and what it wants us to take seriously. You can criticize the fact that they treat it like a joke, but you have to assign that flaw to the writers. In-universe, these actions are exaggerated for the sake of comedy, because ML relies on absurdist humor. Which is why it is ridiculous to use "Adrien doesn't take no for an answer" as a critique. It's disingenuous and it makes me want to just ignore anyone who takes it seriously, because they're just fishing for reasons to salt on Adrien instead of coming up with constructive critique.

It's the same as people who go on long, obsessive tirades about how Marinette is a creepy stalker, cause no, she's not. It's a joke. It's exaggeration for comedy. Him flirting and her being exasperated is supposed to be funny. Her breaking into his house in goofy ways and having his schedule mapped out is supposed to be funny. It's up to you to find it funny, and you can certainly talk about the fact that it shouldn't be used as a joke, but pretending this is some character flaw and not a joke is a bad argument, and makes me less inclined to take anyone who thinks that way seriously.

And in Glaciator 2, he didn't spread rumors about their relationship? It was some magazine that did that (they got voted couple of the year or something), and he was just making jokes about it. And he can be called out for that (and he is called out in the episode), but conjuring up imaginary flaws to make him look worse is not helping your point, because it just makes you look like you don't know what you're talking about. I hope that clears it up.
