The: "She's cute" "You're blind" KILLS me every time because that is such a boy response to not wanting to admit a girl is cute, oh my GOD. it seems. so. obvious. I just want to talk with these writers. They had to know what they were doing. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills when people say they don't see the Very Clear romantic rivals to lovers topes. I feel like Sam not knowing about Casey is a mixture of him not being observant, like you said, Derek being a private person, and Derek not wanting to talk about how upset he is. We know from later episodes that Derek isn't "big on feeling bad" so maybe he just simply didn't want to dwell on it. When he hangs out with Sam, that's his escape from how crazy his house has become. He already sees this incredibly annoying girl at school too, he doesn't need to being her up to his homie. (Then again, it is incredibly weird that your best friend wouldn't know about your dad remarrying so maybe I'm reading too much into this and the writers just wanted to create drama lol)

But did the writers know what they were doing? I mean, if I've learned anything in the last fifteen years, it's that script writers are a lot dumber than I thought (either that, or they're getting dumber, I don't know which). Maybe they actually thought they were writing stepsiblings at odds? I honestly am cool with not giving them any credit whatsoever.

Those are very valid points about both Sam and Derek, and make me feel better about their brain power. Like, I can accept them both being emotional dumbasses, but unobservant dum-dums too? Nah, Casey deserves better than that.
