Venom and Name Meanings
Eddie, from Edward -- (middle English) "Guardian of prosperity"
(Guardian or a protector it's right in the name.)
Brock -- (old English, Celtic) "badger"
(Also possibly a complete coincidence but nevertheless amusing, Eddie Brock kinda sounds like Edderkopp, the Norwegian word for "spider.")
Cletus-- (Latin, from Greek) "famous, renowned" (he sure is, lol)
Kasady, from Cassidy -- (Irish) "curly-haired,
Descendent of Caiside"
(According to Wikipedia Caiside a family from the Ulster region of poets, churchmen, scholars and hereditary physicians to the Maguire Kings of Ireland.)
Frances -- (English) French, her middle name Louise -- (French) famous warrior, and her alias from the comics Sandra -- (Italian) Defender of mankind
Barrison kind of sounds like garrison, a fortified place. Also discovered this, sharing without further comment...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anne -- (French from Latin) "favor, grace"
Dan -- (Anglicized from Greek from Hebrew) "God is my Judge"
Lewis -- (Welsh) "strong, leader"
Dora -- (Latin) "gift of God"
Carlton -- (English) "Settlement of the free peasants" (how very ironic)
Drake -- (from Old Norse or Old English) "Dragon"

"The transition from [the barter system to currency] is hard to understand; how can human cravings be fetishized into pieces of metal? The answer is elegant because it reveals not only the origin of money, but its character even today. Money was and still is literally sacred: 'It has long been known that the first markets were sacred markets, the first banks were temples, the first to issue money were priests or priest-kings.' The first coins were minted and distributed by temples because they were medallions inscribed with the image of their god and embodying his protective power. Containing such manna, they were naturally in demand, not because you could buy things with them but vice-versa: since they were popular, you could exchange them for other things.
The consequence of this was that 'now the cosmic powers could be the property of everyman, without even the need to visit temples: you could now traffic in immortality in the marketplace.' This eventually led to the emergence of a new kind of person, 'who based the value of his life — and so of his immortality — on a new cosmology centered on coins.' A new meaning system arose, which our present economic system makes increasingly the meaning-system. 'Money becomes the distilled value of all existence ... a single immortality symbol, a ready way of relating the increase of oneself to all the important objects and events of one's world.'
If we replace 'immortality' with 'becoming real,' the point becomes Buddhist: beyond its usefulness as a medium of exchange, money has become modern humanity's most popular way of accumulating Being, of coping with our gnawing intuition that [the ego does] not really exist. Suspecting that the sense of self is a groundless construction, we went to temples and churches to ground ourselves in God; now we ground ourselves financially.
The problem is that the true meaning of this meaning-system is unconscious, which means, as usual, that we end up paying a heavy price for it. The value we place on money karmically rebounds back against us: the more we value it, the more we use it to evaluate ourselves."
- David Loy, from "Buddhism and Money: The Repression of Emptiness Today." Buddhist Ethics and Modern Society: An International Symposium, edited by Charles Wei-hsun Fu and Sandra A. Wawrytko, 1991.

Note
who are your favourite tv characters?
Hmm, interesting question. These are always tough because I consume so much media that I don't remember everything, despite liking those characters, so the ones that stick are usually the ones I've rewatched a million times. Anyway! I will do my best, in no particular order, nor is this an exhaustive list:
Rupert Giles
Tumblr media
Cordelia Chase
Tumblr media
Blair Waldorf
Tumblr media
Robb Stark before...yeah
Tumblr media
Wei Yingluo
Tumblr media
Aang
Tumblr media
Sokka
Tumblr media
Battiatus
Tumblr media
OG Spartacus
Tumblr media
Asher
Tumblr media
Sandra Kaluyokalani
Tumblr media
Yuri and Victor
Tumblr media
Levi Ackerman
Tumblr media
This absolute nutjob, Yumeko Jabami (s1)
Tumblr media
Bishop Greenleaf (tbh he could just be reading the phonebook and he'd be my favourite)
Tumblr media
This entire OG cast tbh
Tumblr media
Zeng Bao Qin & Shen Ciu Xi
Tumblr media
This entire cast
Tumblr media
These goofballs most of the time
Tumblr media
Do Bong Soon
Tumblr media
There's more I'm sure, but this is what came up when I wracked my brain lol.

I have a theory that all of bssr's disciples have such shit luck after descending the mountain because bssr and her disciples have been worshiping the crown prince who pleased the gods for years
bssr has been in seclusion for so long, that she doesn't know that the crown prince has fallen twice and ascended three times as three different gods
she doesn't know that the they all pray to the crown prince for luck, that the worse their luck will get

My #1 post of 2022
@agendratum made me think about jiang disciple meng yao
Meng Yao knows that he's being brought to lotus pier to prove a point, the point being, "If you can do that, so can I."
what he doesn't know is that it's one part pettiness, and two parts removing a problem for his new madam's best friend, but it's not like it matters, his mother is dead, and Yu Furen paid the price the brothel demanded without batting an eye, she even bought him new clothes
he does not call her mother, and he is not expected to, but he is expected to train with Yu Furen's personal maids, rather than with his shidis, no matter how much wei ying and Jiang Cheng hound him to join them, instead
for Jiang Fengmian, Meng Yao follows Wei Ying's example, and calls him sect leader in public, and uncle to his face
he is still expected to develop his golden core, and he still receives his own sword
his father visits lotus pier, along with his legal wife and his legitimate son, but they don't know that Meng Yao has lived up to his surname
they do not know that Meng Yao is the eldest brother among two younger brothers and one younger sister, nor do they know the way all three of them follow after him, not until they see it for themselves
his father doesn't like it, and insists, drunkenly, that Meng Yao means to steal his shimei away from her fiance, he even goes as far to grab the front of Meng Yao's robes and demand the truth, even if Meng Yao has already told it.
he has no such designs on Jiang Yanli, but when he insists, a closed fist raises to come flying at his face, and Meng Yao forces his eyes shut, but the hit never comes
instead, he's dragged out of his father's grip, and pulled behind his shidis, and his shimei standing beside him while she tries to hold him up, both of their knees shake while Wei Ying and Jiang cheng try to argue respectfully to Jin Guangshan
in the end, they're discovered by Jiang Fengmian, and all three brothers are made to kneel in the ancestral hall, but Jiang Yanli still smuggles her brothers their lunches
Meng Yao doesn't dare argue when he's set onto a boat with all three of his siblings and sent to Gusu to study for a year, nor does he blink when he's asked to keep Wei Ying in line for as long as he can

Cannes 2023 - Dispatch 4
A bientot,
Mark

Y supuestamente me amabas. Neta?
Me he estado enfocando en mi misma. Y sabes algo? Estoy muy orgullosa de mi misma. Me dueles aún, si.
Me pertenezco a mi.

"Money (the blood) and economic growth (the body) constitute a defective myth because they can provide no expiation of guilt — in Buddhist terms, no resolution of lack. Our new holy of holies, the true temple of modern humanity, is the stock market, and our rite of worship is communing with the Dow Jones average. In return, we receive the kiss of profits and the promise of more to come, but there is no atonement in this. Of course, insofar as we have lost belief in sin, we no longer see anything to atone for, which means we end up unconsciously atoning in the only way we know how, working hard to acquire all those things that society tells us are important and will make us happy. Then we cannot understand why they do not make us happy, why they do not resolve our sense of lack. The reason can only be that we do not yet have enough. 'But the fact is that the human animal is distinctively characterized, as a species and from the start, by the drive to produce a surplus. There is something in the human psyche which commits man to nonenjoyment, to work.' Where are we all going so eagerly? 'Having no real aim, acquisitiveness, as Aristotle correctly said, has no limit.' Not to anywhere but from something, which is why there can be no end to it as long as that something is our own lack shadow. 'Economies, archaic and civilized, are ultimately driven by that flight from death which turns life into death-in-life.' Or by that flight from emptiness that makes life empty: by an intuition of nothingness that, when repressed, only deepens my sense that there is something very wrong with me.
In Buddhist terms, then, money symbolizes becoming real, but since we never quite become real we only make our sense of lack more real. We end up in infinite deferral, for those chips we have accumulated can never be cashed in. The moment we do so, the illusion that money can resolve lack is dispelled; we are left more empty and lack-ridden than before, being deprived of our fantasy for escaping lack. We unconsciously suspect and fear this; the only answer is to flee faster into the future. This points to the fundamental defect of any economic system that requires continual growth to survive: it is based not on needs but on fear, for it feeds on and feeds our sense of lack. In sum, our preoccupation with manipulating the purest symbol [money], which we suppose to be the means of solving the problem of life, turns out to be a symptom of the problem."
- David Loy, from "Buddhism and Money: The Repression of Emptiness Today." Buddhist Ethics and Modern Society: An International Symposium, edited by Charles Wei-hsun Fu and Sandra A. Wawrytko, 1991.

LOVE
