For Nerdy Queer Teens Past and Present
Cass is a fat, nerdy queer teenager who is obsessed with a book series and roleplays as one of the characters in an online community. I was a fat nerdy queer teen who was obsessed with a book series and roleplayed in an online community! She’s a chronic overthinker, I’m a chronic overthinker. Needless to say, I cared a lot about Cass and felt protective of her while reading.
The chapters are interspersed with roleplay scenes, which might not work for everyone, but was very nostalgic for me, and they nicely complemented what was happening in Cass’s AFK world.
It was also nice to read about a main character who is so confident both in being fat and being a lesbian, especially as a teenager. There still aren’t many examples of that in media.
While there are a lot of elements to this story, including family as well as romance, it was the friendships that stood out to me, and how seriously they’re taken. They’re often messy and imperfect, but they’re also so important to Cass, and they can be unexpected and beautiful even when they’re messy.
I highly recommend this for nerdy queer teens and those who once were nerdy queer teens—though I’m sure lots of other readers would enjoy it, too.

IT'S A LOVE/SKATE RELATIONSHIP (HarperTeen, Winter 2025)
Add Love/Skate on Goodreads!
Hockey star Charlie Porter has one shot to make her dreams come true -- literally. One goal is all that stands between her and the coveted Winthrop Cup, along with a life-changing hockey scholarship that could catapult her into the big leagues. But when Charlie misses her shot -- and inadvertently starts a good ol’ fashioned brawl between rival schools -- she waves goodbye to more than just the championship title. She gets kicked off her team, suspended from school, and banished to the Worst Place on Earth: Winthrop High. Things for Charlie cannot get any worse.
Until she meets Alexa Goldstein. A prickly, perfectionist ice princess with her sights set on the Olympics, Alexa is the last person Charlie would ever want to share a rink with -- no matter how good she looks in her figure skating leotard. But when Alexa’s skating partner breaks his ankle and torpedoes her chances for a gold medal career, the two unlikely allies -- along with Alexa’s terrifying, ex-Olympian mother -- strike a deal: Charlie will practice with Alexa until her partner heals, and Alexa’s mother will use her connections to get Charlie back in her hockey uniform.
But as the ice between Charlie and Alexa begins to melt, their partnership only gets more complicated. Charlie’s falling hard -- and not just when she’s trying to land a double Axel. What happens when making Alexa’s skating dreams come true means giving up her own?

Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron-
It’s 200 years after Cinderella found her prince, but the fairy tale is over. Teen girls are now required to appear at the Annual Ball, where the men of the kingdom select wives based on a girl’s display of finery. If a suitable match is not found, the girls not chosen are never heard from again.
Sixteen-year-old Sophia would much rather marry Erin, her childhood best friend, than parade in front of suitors. At the ball, Sophia makes the desperate decision to flee, and finds herself hiding in Cinderella’s mausoleum. There, she meets Constance, the last known descendant of Cinderella and her step sisters. Together they vow to bring down the king once and for all–and in the process, they learn that there’s more to Cinderella’s story than they ever knew . . .
This fresh take on a classic story will make readers question the tales they’ve been told, and root for girls to break down the constructs of the world around them.
The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson-
Tomorrow, on the beach, Baru Cormorant will look up from the sand of her home and see red sails on the horizon.
The Empire of Masks is coming, armed with coin and ink, doctrine and compass, soap and lies. They'll conquer Baru’s island, rewrite her culture, criminalize her customs, and dispose of one of her fathers. But Baru is patient. She'll swallow her hate, prove her talent, and join the Masquerade. She will learn the secrets of empire. She’ll be exactly what they need. And she'll claw her way high enough up the rungs of power to set her people free.
In a final test of her loyalty, the Masquerade will send Baru to bring order to distant Aurdwynn, a snakepit of rebels, informants, and seditious dukes. Aurdwynn kills everyone who tries to rule it. To survive, Baru will need to untangle this land’s intricate web of treachery - and conceal her attraction to the dangerously fascinating Duchess Tain Hu.
But Baru is a savant in games of power, as ruthless in her tactics as she is fixated on her goals. In the calculus of her schemes, all ledgers must be balanced, and the price of liberation paid in full.

I absolutely loved Tess Sharpe's new book, 6 Times We Almost Kissed (And One Time We Did). She really has a way with taking a cute tripe and then completely traumatizing you with it.
Do you have any similar recs?
She is quite masterful at that, yes! Check out Kelly Quindlen's Her Name in the Sky and Ciara Smyth's Not My Problem, and definitely keep an eye out for Alyson Derrick's Forget Me Not, which releases in April.

Stars, Hide Your Fires cover reveal 💖
Dusting off this blog to post ✨ book news ✨ Ever since I first saw the early cover sketches by the stellar @christinaillos in my inbox, I’ve been counting down the days until the cover reveal would go live. I mean, just look at that gorgeous cover.
On a personal note, I had an absolute blast editing this sapphic YA sci-fi book by the wonderful Jessica Mary Best. It’s writing like Best’s that make being a kidlit editor so much fun -- I cried, I laughed, I got chills, and I spat out my tea while snort-laughing. (Also, if you haven’t listened to Best’s audio drama The Strange Case of Starship Iris, you need to do that ASAP.)
Anyway, enough nattering from me! Here’s the description:
A wanted thief. A murdered emperor. A killer loose on the station. KNIVES OUT goes sci-fi in this gripping YA mystery set in space, perfect for fans of THE DARKNESS OUTSIDE US and IRON WIDOW. As an expert thief from a minor moon, Cass knows a good mark when she sees one. The emperor’s ball is her chance to steal a fortune for herself, her ailing father, and her scrappy crew of thieves and market vendors. Her plan is simple: 1. Hitch a ride to the planet of Ouris, the dazzling heart of the empire. 2. Sneak onto the imperial palace station to attend the emperor’s ball. 3. Steal from the rich, the royal, and the insufferable. But on the station, things quickly go awry. When the emperor is found dead, everyone in the palace is a suspect—and someone is setting Cass up to take the fall. To clear her name, Cass must work with an unlikely ally: a gorgeous and mysterious rebel with her own reasons for being on the station. Together, they unravel a secret that could change the fate of the empire.
If you want a lil sneak peek, the first chapter can be found here. And if you want to go straight to preordering (excellent choice!), why not preorder from Bookshop.org or your local indie? Stars, Hide Your Fires launches this summer on July 11th 🚀 Hope you’ll check it out! And since I’m breaking the seal on posting here -- if you have any questions about editing, kidlit (i.e. YA lit, MG), working in publishing etc, don’t hesitate to shoot me an ask! 😁 (I’m also on Instagram at the same handle 👋)

spoilers for The No-Girlfriend Rule by Christen Randall below the cut
Hollis and Aini holding hands while falling asleep at the sleepover is making me sob. not even because it’s a romantic moment i actually like it because it feels very platonic (maybe in a homo-erotic friendship that sapphic girls tend to have type of way, but still technically platonic)
like doing stuff like that is such peak young girl friendship. and the moment felt so real to me that it just instantly made me start crying.
especially seeing a fat queer girl who mostly has shitty male friends experience something like that. for maybe the first time. oh my god i’m so emotional.

actually, I like the getting-to-know-each-other stage. where you stay up late just to talk to them. where you ask a ton of questions. where you clearly are smitten by each other but both are too shy to say anything. where you share music and memories with each other. the flirting, the yearning, the silly jokes forming, letting guards down, making plans to meet.
