Similarly to pinkwashing and greenwashing, you cannot talk about Israeli women in any way else you are engaging with the most violent colonialist white feminism. Israeli women cannot be raped because they are not civilians, because draft. Women in the IDF can't be advertised to diaspora Jewish women as role models or aspirational because Genocide Barbie. Gal Gadot bathes in the blood of babies because she's not a great actress and prayed for Hamas to stop oppressing Palestinians? Israeli feminism is a cloak and daggers show meant to distract you from something something something Palestine something something.
I want these people to ask themselves why Israel is the only society on Earth that has a truly equitable, universal, gender blind draft? What kind of society do you think would want to put a gun in every able bodied person's hands if worst comes to worst? Perhaps the various Kurdistans, but hmm, I wonder if that only cements the point considering the Kurd's history too.
Only a society that has such an intimate relationship to trauma and death (and surviving and laughing in the face of that death) would want to prepare every single citizen for combat. It's not "our women are so sexy in uniform," it's not "we're so progressive actually," it's certainly not "we're so pathetic and weak we have to call up, gasp, womz to fight." It's a very prosaic reaction to 3000 years of attempted annihilation. Jewish women have been dealing with this shit for 3000 years. If they are capable of defending themselves and their communities, why should they sit out military training? Why shouldn't the Nation also expect their service in times of war? Why should they sit back and hope their men can defend them when they can just defend themselves and all the men and women can defend each other?

It-Girl Check: Carina Zavline
Hey girlies,
todays topic is a German It-Girl named Carina Zavline. For those who are not familiar with her at all – she’s a German It-Girl, Model and influencer.
Tumblr media
As you can see – she has almost 1 million followers on instagram and posts frequently about her vacations, model jobs and various beauty treatments. In fact, I first heard about lympathic drainage in one of her instagram stories and been a fan of this treatment ever since!
Her career started 2017 when she was a contestant in the German casting show Germany’s Next Topmodel.
While she got the best job (the Opel campagne) of the season and was handled as the shows favorite she had to leave the show right before the semifinal.
However, her career had just started. She landed a job as one of Guess ambassadors and did cooperations with many companies, mostly over her instagram profile.
Tumblr media
But who is Carina and what makes her so succesful?
Carina is the daughter of a Russian father and an Ukrainian mother. She was born in Dortmund, Germany and grew up in Hamburg before she moved to Munich to study there. After she finished her studies in Germany she moved to Paris and went to university there. She also studied acting at the Strasberg institute in LA.
Carina is fluent in six languages: German, English, French, Spanish, Ukrainian and Russian.
Before she started her career as an influencer/model she was a succesful dancer and competed international.
In conclusion: she’s not only beautiful but also smart, well spoken and knows how to move her body.
These attributes helped her to land maybe the most important deal of her life: Kilian Hennessy.
Tumblr media
Kilian Hennessy is a french billionaire and maybe you already guessed it – yes, his family business is the cognac brand Henessy.
He’s also the founder of the luxurious perfume brand Kilian.
There is not much about the two as a couple on the internet but they made it official relatively recently, in 2022, when he and Carina walked together over the red carpet at the Cannes film festivals.
What can we learn from Carina?
Well, one thing would be: make friends on your way up and keep them. Nourish your friendships and make sure you don’t betray your friends or throw them under the bus for a man because maybe, they introduce you to your future husband.
Carina frequently posts pictures with one of her girlfriends, Hofit Golan – an israeli model, producer and entrepreneur.
Tumblr media
Hofit once was called Israels Paris Hilton and she seems to have the same lavish lifestyle as the American It-Girl.
Private jets, dinners in fancy restaurants and of course expensive clothes seem to be Carinas new normal.
Carinas personal style is very sexy but never too much. She’s often spotted wearing luxurious brands like LV, Hermès and Guess.
Her favorite accessoires seem to bee her Van Cleef & Arpels jewellry and her Hermès bags.
She always looks elegant, mix and matching different colors and materials. Look at her instagram for outfit inspirations!
Her makeup and hairstyles are rather simple. She’s sporting a basic nude face with winged eyeliner and wears her long hair down and with soft natural waves.
For nails, she mostly wears them short and with a soft pinkish color.
Tumblr media
I do understand the hype about her and I really do think that she’s a great role model in terms of levelling up and hypergamy.
She shows that you should not only look good but also need to be intelligent in order to bag a high value man.
Beauty can open doors, yes – but if you’re dumb and can’t hold a basic conversation even the most beautiful face won’t help you.
Most of those high value men are smart and want a partner they can talk to, a partner who’s able to discuss literature, politics or even art.
Work on yourself, not only on your appearence but also on your inside. Be gentle, generous, friendly and curious. Just never stop learning.

What's bad about saying hamas is Isis... Do you like not know what they've done last month. And historically too
Hi:D i wasnt really talking about hamas, i was just explaining what was in the video. While i do believe there are differences, i dont know enough about isis to go into a good response. I'll have to educate myself more on that.
WIth that being said, im going to explain my stance on hamas. Hamas was created as a response to the violent Israeli occupation of Palestine. Just like Oct 7th (and everything before that) was in response to the occupation. You can only kick someone for so long (since the 1940's), before they start to kick back. As far as i understand the majority of hamas members are men who have lost their families or loved ones to IDF soldiers and bombing. Which NEVER excuses harm of any kind towards anyone, but is an explanation as to why they became radicalized.
Just to be clear i condemn hamas, just as i condemn Israel. I mourn the death of Israeli civillians, just as i mourn the death of Palestinian civillians. I wish for nothing but a ceasfire, and for everyone to be safe.
In the post u r referencing, i was mainly talking about the "Zionism is sexy" sticker:)

A question for you! Which of your OCs has the Worst decision-making skills and why--funny answers encouraged.
omgggg anne please they're ALL really bad at decision making. all of their decisions cause problems to themselves and for everyone else.
there's evadne who seems to make the right decisions in the base game because everyone else is acting as her moral compass/she wants everyone to like her SO MUCH but she's also like *picks up some possessed vial in a werewolf lair and learns magic from it, freeing the spirit* *violates andraste's ashes and then lies to her andrastian gf about it* *finds some musty ass vial of unspeakable liquids in an ancient warden keep and tips it back like a tequila shot* and then we get to awakening and she's like yeah yeah its fine *recruits everyone trying to kill her and also the spirit possessing the dead rotting corpse of one of her wardens* like EXCELLENT decisions there miss evadne
there's kal who spent her entire playthrough trying to protect alistair from everything, including eamon and having him become king, so she supports anora taking the throne and anora asks for her father's life and for that reason, amongst a myriad of others like the fact loghain is her blorbo, she spares loghain only to have alistair IMMEDIATELY turn on her. so ANORA turns on him and demands his execution. she spent the entire game trying to protect him only to get him EXILED FROM FERELDEN. (i almost missed the dialogue that would have spared him so can you fucking IMAGINE.) in the universes where she doesn't spare loghain and makes alistair king, HE PUBLICALLY DUMPS HER IN FRONT OF ALL THEIR FRIENDS FOR A DEFICIENT WOMB. i suppose her real crime of bad decision making was romancing alistair first instead of zevran EOFGJKDFGJ
aedan is a contender - he thinks he's making excellent decisions but he ends up with an orlesian mistress and a child out of wedlock with orlais' arcane advisor within 30 years of the occupation, and within 10 years of the empress trying to get king cailan to divorce his ferelden wife to marry her so she could take ferelden as part of the pre-nups. faris makes bad decisions on purpose because he literally does not care about any of it.
damon and mal are both partially purple personalities which is synonymous with bad decisions. damon flirting with anders right after karl dies and making the WORST jokes about justice having a sexy body is definitely top 10 worst dragon age decision making moments.
marya conscripted the templars because she thought that's what the inquisition wanted and had no idea she could exercise any agency for that and go support the mages instead. she got the chargers killed because she misread bull entirely and imagined he cared more about the qun than his men. she only found out about the halamshiral alienage AFTER she put celene back on the throne. SHE ROMANCED THE ACTUAL REAL LIFE DREADWOLF.
but i think another major contender for bad decisions is isra. she romances cullen. enough said.

Tiggymalvern said, 11PM, November 7th, 2023, in defense of Israeli soldiers who are committing genocide and posing for ~sexy~ blatantly white supremacist propaganda pictures to seduce racist white men into supporting the genocide they're cheerfully committing while celebrating on social media:
Here is your reminder also that not all of these Israelis want to be there. They get conscripted. Women and men both. If you're born in Israel and you're Jewish, you have no choice, you're forced into the military. The Israeli government doesn't directly murder its own people, but it is shitty to them. This photo tells us nothing about what this woman thinks of murdering Palestinians, but we do know she's being used.

2/11/2024: Regarding those who said Islam is bad for Muslim countries, I, Trang, the female Buddha (the hardcore heterosexual female with hardcore her eggs philosopher or the hardcore heterosexuality of Jesus' father or God living in a Vietnamese female with eggs body) said, "What about your Jesus people in Christianity not covering up your probably cold to death poor naked Jesus up with a bigger cloth while exposing his sexy crotch area near his penis inside churches so it doesn't turn on your closeted gay priests to get horny and rape your poor choir boys? Males raping males is rising in your Christian empire. I am a hardcore heterosexual female and got sexually harassed in a minor way by a young Muslim lesbian and bullied to death by 3.1 gay-lesbian staff as my bosses at Starbucks in gay San Francisco and no one did anything to help or simply follow your Christian laws to report all work injury to HR and insurance by bosses. What about your Jewish religious text saying "all men are created equal" while daring to promote Jewish democracy in Israel while quietly stealing 70% Palestinian land in the last 75 years when you were only given a tiny piece of land to live in Palestine by the British. You did this land theft from us while from us humans around the world until the Hamas terrorists (a few children of those you killed and kicked out in the last 75 years rised up and fought back with whateve they had a poor people along with their violent teaching of Islam animal killing one of your poor white settler infant in a crib and possibly burn another settler child who might be alive after getting shot. Under your great Israeli religion and democracy, you didn't allow the Palestinians to see their grandparents-- Your Judaism government and Christianity bombs and rockets prevented Islamic children in Gaza and the occupied West Bank from getting hugs and candies from their grandparents while you get to hug yours and eat your grandparent's candies. Your Judaism-Christian Israel government kidnap their Islamic men anytime and throwing them in jail with no formal charging under administrative detention before and during this war while calling yourselves the good religions for Muslim countries? If you think this your Judaism ad Christianity is better for Muslim countries by stealing their land and killing their children and people who fight back as terrorists and evil and animals then your judgment as religions and humans are judgement of Satan's thinking while trying to rebuild this God's kingdom in today time with your return of Jesus according to you Bible. By the way suckers, your first amendment of your country America bans government from doing any work that includes religious work via the saying of separation of Church and state. I am OK with you doing this, but do it using your money and not collective tax money of America for some of us are working for your Jewish religious words of "all men are created equal" as borrowed by that founding father of America and freedom, freedom, freedom for all (perhaps only basic freedom to vote). Where in the Bible did it say to go kill Palestinians and steal their land to rebuild this kingdom of God's on Jesus' birthland? Where did it say in your Bible to help the very people (Israelis) whose ancestors (ancient Jews) nailed Jesus (God's son) to steal the land where Jesus was born? I guarantee love thy neighbor Bible would never promote that? I guarantee in Satan's Bible is where I would say "Bood and steal land as the way to go." Trang's thinking at 50.84 years.

Why Do Men Feel The Need To Kill?
Tumblr media
I was thinking about the current state of world affairs, with wars in Ukraine and The Middle East raging. Casting my mind back to the recent global pandemic – remember that? Folk were worried about dying from Covid and governments were doing their best to help their citizens. It was not perfect but there was a caring concern at the top of most people’s priorities. Since then, we have the old economic imperative reasserting its dominance over our lives via inflation and the central bankers' monetary policy hammer. Mister Putin thought that it would, also, be a good time for his Russian forces to invade the rest of Ukraine. Then the putrid sore that was the Israelis’ treatment of the Palestinians flared up via Hamas killing and abducting hostages en masse. Now, we have lots of men killing each other with their tanks and their bombs. Drones are the flavour of the month too, with these high tech toys of death dropping bombs on those down below. Pushing buttons and sending missiles to rain down destruction upon the guilty and the innocent indiscriminately. Why do men feel the need to kill? “Sociologists will tell you that the tendency for men to be more violent than women is a result of traditional gender roles, such that in many cultures boys are raised to believe it’s important for them to be dominant and competitive, while girls are raised to be more nurturing and gentle. Evolutionary psychologists, however, would say that it has more to do with our evolved sex differences and the fact that males have historically competed for status and access to females.” - (https://www.sciencefocus.com/the-human-body/why-are-most-murders-rapes-and-violent-crimes-committed-by-men)

Men Killing For Power
Mercenaries, soldiers, terrorists, and freedom fighters are all names for men who get to do the same sort of violent activities. Yes, there probably are a few women in the mix but predominantly it’s a guy thing. Killing other human beings. Shooting bullets into lives and ending them. It is a power grab thing. It begins with politics and the machinations of the grab for power over others. It can end with bully boys pointing their guns at those they don’t agree with. White supremacy is a power thing too. Keeping the n****** down. The colonial recent past where the white man brought civilisation to the savage natives. The blue eyed, white skinned Jesus fiction. The Christian smokescreen for an exploitative power grab. There are dumb folk out there who still believe this BS about the superiority of the white race.

Pretending To Kill In Every American Movie
Have you ever noticed that just about every American movie has someone with a gun in it? Gun violence appears to be the number one fantasy of the American public. No matter the genre, a gun is always proffered as the answer. Most people in their real lives have little to do with guns. What is the big wet dream about toy guns in the movies? Guns and killing with them are portrayed as sexy. You have to say that is one sick fantasy. If you dig down into sex its actually about procreation at its biological core. A gun is a weapon designed to make killing easier. WTF? This American obsession with guns is a distortion of something fundamental in life. Why do men feel the need to kill? Is it because only women carry new life into the world? Is it some f***** up jealousy thing? Man the destroyer? Woman the creator? If American civilisation is crumbling, what will they be remembered for? Probably their guns.
Tumblr media
Getting Young Men To Do The Killing In Wars They send very young men to war. They do this because these youngsters aint so good at thinking for themselves about important stuff. Younger guys are easier led. Peer group pressure is more easily manipulated to achieve the aims of the organisation. Getting guys to kill for their country or cause is what it is all about. Older men, who might be fathers, are not going to so readily pull the trigger. Life looms larger in the shadows of a co-creator. I studied ancient history, the ancient Greeks and Romans, and the accounts of their soldiers and leaders are strikingly familiar to our modern day equivalents. We have not really come very far when you get down to it. Several thousand years may have  passed but we are still sending young guys to war. You know plenty of soldiers join up out of boredom and in search of a more exciting life. Travel to exotic places and kill people! I can see the tourist brochure. Not many of us think too deeply about stuff at the best of times.
Tumblr media
U.S. President Donald Trump at the 101st by U.S. Department of Agriculture is licensed under CC-CC0 1.0 Old Men Point The Finger Old men make the final decisions about who gets killed most times. Our political leaders are invariably grey haired guys. Thinning on top and further away from the start than their demise. The Putin’s and the Trump’s. The Netanyahu’s and the Morrison’s. Old autocrats who firmly believe in the assertion of power. Why do men feel the need to kill? The competitive urge for ever more power at the expense of others? Old men make the bullets and get the young to fire them. High tech warfare is all the rage in the 21C. Drones and missile systems. Push button killing. Blowing up homes and the lives of the innocent – collateral damage. The Israelis are wiping out Gaza. Already, some 25, 000 Palestinians have been killed. Israeli settlers are getting ready to move in and colonise what was once Gaza. They talk about what is written in The Torah and the original name for this part of Israel. This is the trouble with religious belief, the adherents think that the answers are in an old book. No one and nobody else matters but the word of God. The Old Testament is full of violent and righteous Jews. This is why the Christian Nationalists in America love that book more than the wimpy gospels in the New Testament. They can grab one of the 600 million guns and waive it around threateningly ready to smite their enemy. Some lefty liberal with questionable morals. Evangelicals may sin but they don’t proudly rub it in your face. They don’t write children’s books about their secret perversions to be put on display in the local library. God damn those multiplying acronyms LGBTQIA.
Tumblr media
The Socially Conservative Smokescreen Russia is a controlling socially conservative place where immoral crimes can land you in prison. The Russian Orthodox Church is firmly behind Mister Putin and his imperialistic expansion. They spin a tale, a false narrative, of Ukrainian moral decay to justify the war and Russia’s invasion. There are parallels with the lies and distortions spread by the GOP Trump cult about their political opponents. Making up stories that demonise ‘the other’ for the purposes of galvanising political support. The politics of grievance rules America and the world in the 21C. Fascists are employing bully boy tactics and brandishing their guns. The strong man is back in town to impose socially conservative rules upon the people. Sin must be put back into the shadows and out of the sunlight. Bronze age beliefs about sexuality, gender, family, and God are to be reimposed upon us. Fox News is trumpeting the message about ‘woke’ being the sheep’s clothing for a socialist take over. Critical Race Theory is one of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. Meanwhile, the grifters are taking your money under the cover of this ideological smokescreen. Corporate America in its concentrated oligarchic rentier brilliance is sucking every greenback it can from the population. It has SCOTUS in its pocket with justices bought and paid for. Clarence Thomas and the Trump appointees do the bidding of the highest bidder. Women’s reproductive rights have been horse traded to the religious right for their electoral support. The progressive policies of the late 20C are now under attack, as the right seeks to take back America for the privileged white. Big Business wants regulatory frameworks to be watered down for greater profits. They call this a backlash.

Photo by Sawyer Sutton on Pexels.com Killing To Control Why do men feel the need to kill? January 6th, 2021, at the Capital was full of murderous intent. This was no peaceful protest; this was an insurrection. Police officers died and many were seriously injured defending the Capital. Angry Americans storming the seat of government and smashing things and people. Righteous anger manipulated by a conman, Donald J Trump, and his MAGA co-conspirators. Whipped into a  frenzy by the messaging and social media. These folk were urged to “fight like hell” by Trump. Hundreds of them are now in prison having been prosecuted for their crimes. We wait for the wheels of justice to turn upon the ring leader. I wonder whether wealth and power ever gets served the justice it deserves in the United States of America. Movies I watched this Week # 142 (Year 3/Week 38):
“Wasson?…”
Mark Kermore just resigned from his post as The Observor's film critic after 10 years, and in his last article he listed his top films from 2013 until now. His most favourite? Bait, which he called “the defining British film of the decade”, by new Cornish filmmaker Mark Jenkin. It is indeed a visually-different, experimental-like masterpiece, shot in splotchy black & white, like a grainy, monochrome Tarkovsky. 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. 8/10. I'll watch his recent film 'Enys Men' next (even though I don't usually care for 'British Folk Horror').
🍿
2 about the monstrous Margaret Thatcher:
🍿 Meantime, my 9th beloved film by British mensch Mike Leigh, another story about the plight of a lower working class family, living in a dystopian Clockwork Orange tenement. Uncomfortable viewing about dreary, miserable lives, mired in poverty and hopelessness during the 1979 "Revolution". With teenager Tim Roth, young Alfred Molina, and psychotic skinhead Gary Oldman. Tragic And heartbreaking. 7/10.
🍿 El Conde, my second by Chilean Pablo Larrain (after 'Spencer'). A black comedy horror metaphor that tried to humanize Augusto Pinochet, by making him a blood-sucking vampire. Like 'Jojo Rabbit', it caused me nothing but distress, especially now on the 50th anniversary of Pinochet cruel coup. It opened with the most unpleasant voiceover, which turned out to be Margaret Thatcher, the other despicable puppet master from that time, here playing the fascist's mother. He went for Magical Realism, but he was no Gabriel García Márquez. 4/10.
🍿
The quiet girl, my 3rd or 4th re-watch of this tender, magnificent gem, one of my most cherished films from 2022. An illustration of Care vs. Neglect. My mom told me about this beautiful story she was reading, and which was the basis for this film, and I was delighted to introduce her to this sublime masterpiece, which we watched together. 10/10.
🍿
First watch! Charlie Chaplin's 1915 silent movie The tramp, the first time he introduced his signature character proper. Filmed in Niles, California, which is today Fremont, and then was a budding film town.
🍿
Objector, a very Israeli 2019 documentary about a young woman who refuses to serve in the army, becomes a conscientious objector, and even serves 110 days in a military prison. As an ex-Israeli and as a guy unwilling to join the army in 1970, this affair was specifically very relevant to me. My hatred for the Israeli occupation is immense, and the story told here was desperately tragic and heartbreaking. Unfortunately, as a movie, it wasn’t very good, probably because the director was inexperienced. That most of the characters spoke English among themselves was another big drawback.
🍿
I never heard about comic genius ventriloquist Nina Conti (Tom Conti's daughter) until finding her on r/nextfuckinglevel. Watching a bunch of her YouTube clips, this pretty, sexy, hilarious comic is superbly creative. In 2012, she wrote and directed a personal documentary, Her master’s Voice. In it she travels to an odd international ventriloquist convention in Kentucky (Photo Above). But it's mostly a tribute to a man, Ken Campbell, who just died. He's the one who had introduced her to the puppets years ago but he also was her lover, when she was in her twenties, and he was in his sixties. Brilliant. 9/10.
🍿
Another re-watch of occasional random 'Mad Men' episode, Signal 30 from S5 E5. That's the one with the dripping faucet in Pete's kitchen, and the visit to the whorehouse, which ends in a fiasco. Co-written by Frank Pierce (who also directed 'Conspiracy'). Another example of the superb ensemble drama, featuring dozens of complex characters. "A thing like that"... 9/10.
🍿
Jeff who lives at home, my second film directed by the Duplass Brothers, the "other" writer-director brother-duo. And this too is an "indie" comedy-drama about two brothers at odds with each other. What a different and how much better film it would have been, if indeed The Coens were the ones doing it. 3/10.
🍿
2012, a Roland Emmerich's big budget disaster extravaganza from 2009, about the end of the world. CGI science fiction popcorn is usually not my gig, but I stuck out and watched all 158 minutes of it. Who pays to see these kind of mindless garbage movies? 1/10.
🍿
Throw-back to the "Art project”:
Ahed Tamimi Adora.
Ventriloquist Adora.
🍿
(My complete movie list is here)

Tumblr media
Sven sat in the Broken Halo nightclub watching the men and women dressed in clothes that could let the bodies beneath move when a song struck them. He loved that about the nightclub that was always illuminated by strobe lights the color that matched the Djs mood. Today it was Evali a lithe Israeli woman whose ebony dark hair fell in dark waves down her long androgynous back. She wore a white corset over her swimmers body. Two glittery star stickers over her nipples behind a string bikini as she remixed a sexy song by The Weekend. Her long sharp face intense as her hands flew over the mix board
Bright white light strobes over the crowd as everyone else moved in time to “Heartless” as she extended the bridge and switched the track to her drop bass version of the ending. She snuck Alison Wonderland’s “I Want U” in and grinned as every woman in the room bobbed their head along to the primal sounding music. She upped the levels on Alison’s vocals as she focused more on the beat.
“He’s like a wolf, he bit you, you got away, because he let you, doesn’t mean he’s not constantly aware of you.” Sven remembered the warning Donovan had given him. He sighed before tossing back a shot of Jameson and heading for the dance floor. The second Alison Wonderland song came surprising him as Evali rarely played two songs from the same musician. The haunting vocals of Flaming Lips lead singer Wayne Coyne filled the club as the dancers around Sven seemed to become a blur of silhouettes. His arms were moving in time to the driving beat as he swung his hips and let loose. The strong hands on his shoulders caused him to focus on the subject of most of his thoughts.
Christopher looked at him like he wanted to consume him, those bright brown eyes looked almost celestial as the twinkled and the tall man moved in time with him. Sven knew he should brush off the hands. Should walk away or run, but do victims of wolf attacks run? Sven stepped closer and followed the large hairy hands to the white cuffs of the button down the tall man wore. He had made a point to memorize every inch of the man naked. But he had also itemized every way his body moved in clothes. There had always been a jacket on so watching the lines of the shirt move over the muscle and bone was interesting.
“You were spiked.” Christopher said as he made a move as if he was going to suck the beat out of his pulse.
“I knew there was a reason I wasn’t calling the police,” Sven said or thought he said but his mouth felt dry and filled with cotton. Pin pricks of awareness of how wrong he felt appeared across his mind. His knees buckled then as his body felt warm and heavy.
“I thought you simply missed me,” the deep voice said against his ear sending warm breath down his skin. His body went rigid as the warm waves of pleasure from those words sunk into his skin. For one second he remembered the one time they had had sex. All the places those hands had been, those full bearded lips, that massive uncircumcised cock.
“No.” Sven said and tried them to wrench away from Christopher but all his weak struggles got him was pressed to Christopher’s front. Christopher’s large hands pressing against Sven’s shoulders now.
“We have to get you somewhere safe and I’ll deal with anyone stupid enough to mess with what’s mine.” Each word felt like thunder roaring across Sven’s mind as he was ushered off the dance floor never losing eye contact with the woman watching Sven from the bar.

It was like a sexy accessory I had that no one else did, something that captured the eye and was whispered about just out of earshot (most of the time) but no one was bold enough to ask where exactly it was from. Or, this is what it had turned into, accessorizing me in intimate ways. In the ways I didn’t choose, it showed up as the large almond shape of my eyes that betrayed my feelings when I was annoyed, the prominence of my nose that wasn’t too big to be ugly but certainly drew attention to the middle of my face. It was the holidays I took off days from school but no one knew what exactly I was celebrating, or the mendhi that would adorn my hands in the days following, to slowly fade away. Eventually I was able to harness this to my advantage, almost like a convertible accessory. Between commiserating with professors who shared one of the many cultures I’d consider my own (the pendulum from Jaishi Krishna to Ramadan Mubarak to habari ako was one I rode often) to using these cultures as a bid for connection in friend groups, restaurants, the Dunkin Donuts that adorned every corner in Boston as ubiquitously as street signs, I reclaimed this accessory almost as though someone had been trying to take it away. Namely however was its presence in my romantic relationships. My other brown friends often teased me for my taste in white men, and perhaps that is a topic for a different essay; but without meaning to, or maybe subconsciously, I would use this culture almost as my own tool of sexuality, luring men with this heir of unknown - if they got to know me, if they slept with me and loved me and dated me and helped me carry groceries, they also got the added bonus of knowing where the fuck I came from. And truly, I feel this was as fascinating for them to learn as it was for me to share. Why do I look Indian/Arab but always go to Africa to visit family? Why am I wearing sarees when I post on Instagram but wear sweaters with Arabic puns displayed on them? Why do I know so much about shawarma and kibbeh, and why do I refuse to patronize Israeli restaurants? Also where does Iran fit into all this, and what on earth is a Memon? It was my deepest joy to answer these questions but also at times, due to a lack of fit in each culture entirely, to get someone to experience this “jack of all cultures master of none” with me. I wasn’t Muslim enough for the Arabs, too Indian for the Pakistanis, and quite frankly, too mzungu, too white for the Africans. Iran was hardly a country I could claim. Instead, I would dip a toe in each when needed, bringing whatever one-syllable-named white man with me, granting him a space by my side at Lebanese and Nigerian restaurants, knowing just enough to impress him but not enough that this became a boring experience for me. Ultimately this was not the thing connecting Matt or Kevin or Tom to myself, rather something I adorned us with. I was the dark exotic girlfriend, a role I took to graciously and happily. He would teach me what a casserole was and how to watch baseball, and I would share with him my spice cabinet and Indian desserts, doling them out in doses, keeping him curious and close. When inevitably each relationship would die, as they do so often in your 20s, this process would start again. In some ways this became exhausting but it was mostly exciting, my energy fueled somewhat by their curiosity, but mostly to have a partner in this disjointed, misfit culture of mine. Mine as one person, looking the way I do, knowing some of each language, laughing at jokes in Cutchi but not knowing quite enough to serve it back.
I realized later on that while this man was granted a certain access to culture through me, it didn’t mean this was overall a shared experience. That was the best part, actually, for them - dipping a toe in when it came to celebrations, clothes, restaurants, and traditions - but a little boring when it came to languages and cultural restrictions, and downright exasperating once we reached the point of politics and international affairs. “Well if we leave Afghanistan right now we’ll just destabilize the entire region! We have to be there!” “You can’t just not include them in the World Cup because they’re Israeli.” “I’m comfortable being next to you if you protest I guess but I don’t think it’s really my place to be participating?”, as if the children we dreamt of having together wouldn’t share half my genes, would have no identity as a Muslim to speak of. It was in those moments I would feel that deep regret of sharing; how dare you enjoy eating pani puri with me if you can’t use your voice for my people? You think the keffiyah is a cool accessory but don’t stand by what it means? These moments of stark realization would sit in the pit of my stomach, lacing up to my brain in the dead of night. “He’s not the one for you” I would feel it in my bones. But! We love beer together! He knows exactly how Muslim I am and accepts me this way, unlike so many of the brown men I could potentially date. There’s no competition of Muslim-ness between us. What do you give up, my dad asked me once. What do you compromise? What do you learn to live without? What connection is worth that exchange? Does sharing your culture come at a price? What is that price? Certainly more than a tray of pani puris.

DESCRIPTION : Kristin Newman spent much of her twenties and thirties buying dresses to wear to her friends' weddings and baby showers. Not ready to settle down and in need of an escape from her fast-paced job as a sitcom writer, Kristin instead traveled the world, often alone, for several weeks each year. In addition to falling madly in love with the planet, Kristin fell for many attractive locals, men who could provide the emotional connection she wanted without costing her the freedom she desperately needed. Kristin introduces readers to the Israeli bartenders, Finnish poker players, sexy Bedouins, and Argentinean priests who helped her transform into "Kristin-Adjacent" on the road–a slower, softer, and, yes, sluttier version of herself at home.
