Just writing to apologize for standing you up tonight. I do so in full awareness, of course, that no letter will find you til tomorrow at the earliest. It could hardly be otherwise, since no mail leaves this island except with me. I’m sorry all the same to be missing our rendezvous — and, as it seems I’ll have some time to kill while this fellow plays at being Howard Carter in yonder ruins, I may as well write and plead my case.

Have some of my ramblings, as a snack, I am constantly thinking about them

I think Cohen definitely doesn't love Fitzpatrick at all whatsoever, I don't think Cohen loves any of his disciples. But I do think he's trying to get Fitzpatrick to conform to his concept of masculinity, which is why I like to write him as meek.

I think Cohen has a very high standard of masculinity, and I think he sees Andrew Ryan at the height of it. Peak masculinity, if you will. This is why (or at least part of why) he claims to have been in love with Ryan. Ryan is based off of Ayn Rand down to the name, so I'm reminded of her character, Howard Roark, who is framed as this ideal man. And I think, as a result of developing this standard, Cohen does hate himself for being what he percieves as "less of a man" due to his sexuality and his general way of being, and of course he is either drawn or repulsed by other men based on this. I figure this is part of why he says Silas Cobb is his favorite - Silas perhaps presents a more traditional sense of masculinity, despite his uncouthness, he reminds Cohen of Ryan the most out of all his disciples.

Therefore, since Fitzpatrick is still young and impressionable, I think Cohen has this idea that he can mold him into an ideal man, into an Andrew Ryan. So he's very hard on him. And there's nothing paternal about it, and alternatively it's hardly even sexual in the nature of itself; it's about identity and the core values of conservative culture.

Anyway, that's my 4am rambles.
