I hate that you can't see a tweet thread anymore if you're not logged into Twitter (as a gesture of disrespect I refuse to call it by its rebranded name). Here is a copypasta of a thread from Dan Olson, a Canadian documentary filmmaker, expanding upon camera quality, the guilt trips Somerton used to goose his Patreon subscriptions, and how the best tools will never make up for lack of dedication or patience. I have added clarifications in [[double brackets]] where I feel it is necessary.
START OF THREAD
Okay, so, back in April I snapped at James in reply to a tweet that was linking to this video (which James has since delisted but not deleted) and I want to talk about the full context of that but I don't want to make a video, put your beatdown memes away. [[The video has since been deleted. I can see the title of the video is "Maybe the end (not an April Fool's Day thing".]]
The first bit of context is that I initially got keyed into James to fact-check his claims about indie filmmaking in Canada. As a filmmaker the entire Telos venture was immediately obvious as a juvenile fantasy dreamed up by someone with no idea how to make a movie.
Just wild claims about their plans that weren't worth debunking because they bordered Not Even Wrong. But in watching one of these pitch videos I noticed that he had a $4000 current-gen camera in the background as a prop, and that seemed both pretentious and weird.
You don't use your best camera as a prop, you use your second best camera as a prop. So being an obsessive weirdo I needed to know, and I watched his BTS stuff until I spotted his main rig, a $6000 camera with about $1000 in accessories.
Now, these in isolation are unremarkable because his Patreon at the time was bringing in ~$8000 per month, his channel was a full on Business business, and so investing in some professional equipment of that level is maybe a bit indulgent but justifiable.
What was weird is that he doesn't shoot multi-cam, doesn't shoot outdoors, doesn't shoot on location, and in a studio the two cameras kinda really step on each others' toes. Basically if you already have one and don't need a B cam there's no reason to get the other.
Again, on its own, this says nothing, it's just indicative of poor financial decisions, maybe impulsive purchasing, Gear Acquisition Syndrome. Biblical sins, but not crimes.
Paired with the constantly inflating fantasy scope of the Telos films it was clearly an expression of a very, very common bad filmmaker habit of "if I just get the right gear then my movie will basically make itself" Buying stuff because it feels like progress.
At the end of February he tweets "I want to start shooting anamorphic" and then three weeks later in March he posts the worst, out of focus, under-exposed "I just got a new lens!" video I've ever seen, showing off his trash-covered bedroom.
Based on what's available for his cameras and the lead time, that's enough time to get a Laowa Nanomorph or Sirui Saturn from B&H but not enough time to get a Great Joy from the UK or a Vazen from China. And with the flaring blah blah blah, $1300 lens.
Again, [gear acquisition syndrome] is not a crime and these lenses are budget options. Bit of a pointless impulse purchase since he only used it for the Showgirls video. But this is what he was doing just a few weeks before that above video came out: effortlessly impulse purchasing lenses.
James has (had?) a habit of regularly, aggressively driving viewers to Patreon by claiming that videos were getting demonetized. While tacky, it is something a lot of queer YouTubers have dealt with, so there's precedent there. But people were noticing he did it a lot.
Mid-March he humble brags about needing to work so hard to make 6 videos in April because he has over-booked sponsorships.
Then March 29th James posts this whole incel screed on Twitter about how sex work should be "subsidized as a mental health service."
[two image descriptions.
1. "For the majority of people sex (and human contact) can be imperative to a healthy state of mind. A kind and talented sex worker can make someone feel wanted for the first time in their life. I know sex workers who have pulled people back from suicide just by being there for them." 2. "Not only should (sex work) be legal, but it should be subsidized as a mental health service."]
He spends several days getting absolutely *roasted* for this, just dragged across the pavement and read for filth, and doubles down in the replies the whole way.
So this is the context immediately surrounding James waking up on Friday, and posts the above video and the below tweet.
[image description: "We just got the lowest Patreon payout we've gotten in well over a year. Like, a "maybe we need to rethink things" kind of amount... NOT an April Fools Day thing btw. But I don't know if we'll be making videos much longer."]
Now, this unfolds in kinda two directions. The first is that I'm convinced he was just lying about this income shock in the first place.
There's a million theoretical edge cases about what maybe happened and if maybe he just misunderstood the data or saw a glitch and panicked, maybe one of those happened, I don't believe it, I think he just lied because he was salty about getting dragged and felt owed a win.
A big tell to me is that he doesn't blame Patreon. He says he doesn't know what happened, but let's be real, Patreon screws up all the time, they're the first people anyone blames if anything confusing happens, just as a reflex action, even if it's completely not their fault.
The only reason to not blame Patreon is if you already know that it's not their fault and that any investigation on their part might reveal embarrassing details.
Instead he indirectly blames his viewers for not watching enough, not sharing enough, and not turning on auto-renew.
So regardless of the unknowable truth, this segues into the second, far more offensive direction of the messaging itself. "I don't know if we'll be making videos much longer." "Maybe the end" He explicitly framed this as an immediate existential threat to his channel.
In the video he is vague about everything, leaves a ton of hazy room for plausible deniability on how long the channel can keep going, but the messaging is "I need more patrons right this minute or my YouTube channel is over."
He repeatedly evokes all the "fun stuff" they had planned that would never see the light of day if this didn't turn around right away.
And his audience received this message loud and clear. Tons of people making far, far, far less than him left very heartfelt messages about digging a little deeper to subscribe or up their pledge or unsubscribe from other channels to move their pledge to his.
1200 new patrons in one day.
Since I simply don't believe the income shock was real in the first place that would put his post-"Maybe the end" Patreon income at around $10,000 per month. US. Add YouTube income, he's spent the last seven months making around $18,000 per month.
I have seen creators scale back their capabilities to the bone purely to keep making videos for the love of just, like, making stuff even as their funding evaporated and they needed to go back to a desk job to cover their bills.
You'd have to be so outstandingly reckless with your finances as a channel that a one month spook leads immediately to "channel over, sorry about all the fun stuff we won't get to do with you, our patrons, specifically because you, our patrons, aren't giving us enough money"
And not a spook where you then spend a couple weeks crunching numbers. Oh no. A shock so violent where less than two hours later you're weeping on camera about the channel being over.
Three weeks later he brought a brand new Sony FX6v for $8000 CAD to add to his pile of cinema cameras despite the fact that he was, but scant moments earlier, in such a precarious position that a single bad month would kill his channel.
He stole your money, and for that I'm profoundly sad and angry. That's why I snapped at him in April. I'm sorry I couldn't give you the full context then, and I'm sorry if that anger upset you.

Chroma X Recipe - Classic Chrome Street & Portrait Edition
Tumblr media
Fujifilm recipe for striking images on all cameras with Classic Chrome film simulation. Great for street and portraits with high contrast. IvanYolo Introducing the latest and most challenging recipe yet - Chroma X! This Fujifilm film simulation recipe is guaranteed to test your skills as a photographer, as it requires specific lighting conditions to achieve a stunning look. While it may not be for everyone, if you're up for the challenge, give Chroma X a try!Chroma X is a custom setting created for streets and only works on high-contrast locations. To achieve this look, it is best to shoot slightly underexposed images for the light and shadow under bright sunlight while taking into consideration the areas you're shooting, such as places with buildings and dark shadows. This truly is one of the most challenging recipes out there.
About The Chroma X Recipe
After endless hours of tinkering with the settings and experimenting, the Chroma X recipe was inspired by the esteemed Downtown Bloom film simulation, known for its ability to capture stunning street photography shots. Classic Chrome recipe users have yet another reason to celebrate - the breakthrough Chroma X recipe can be used on older Fujifilm camera models and is based on the Classic Chrome film simulation. After conducting extensive testing, I have come to the conclusion that the Chroma X performs optimally without the use of any filters. This allows for the production of photos that boast vivid colors and high contrast. Upon reviewing the sample photos, it is clear that the tonal balance differs between each shot. This can be attributed to various factors such as the use of different lenses including the SIRUI Sniper lens and the Fujinon XF35mm f2 lens, as well as the varying times and locations at which each photo was taken, with and without the use of diffusion filters. The white balance shift is so subtle that it's almost imperceptible. However, this shift has been intentionally made and has slightly shifted to a colder tone, which maintains the aesthetic of Classic Chrome while also achieving some different tonal range.
Chroma X Recipe Challenge - Ready?
I hope you guys thoroughly enjoyed shooting with the Chroma X recipe and are now ready to take on this exciting challenge. As you put your photography skills to the test, I challenge you to push your limits and strive for excellence. So, are you ready to step up to the plate? ^^. Be it portraits or street photography, I would love to feature your photos in this Chroma X sample photos section, you can DM me on my Instagram @equilibrium.tt to get featured. All photos are shot with the Fujifilm X-T4.

DREAMLAPSE JAPAN from Gavin Heffernan on Vimeo.
DREAMLAPSE JAPAN is the product of a grueling but thrilling timelapse expedition through the streets of Japan in the days immediately following landfall of Typhoon Lan in August 2023. Hopefully this short captures a fraction of the intense beauty of these cities. Check it out in 4k and listen with headphones for the full experience! :)
Shot in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto with a Canon 6D, lenses Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L and Rokinon 12mm f2.8. Since it was super hot and we were trekking around a lot, I used an ultralight SIRUI Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod, which I was really happy with. The street light painting effect was done with long exposure images stacked using StarStax, an awesome program I usually use to create star trail images for night sky work for SkyglowProject.com. It really helped capture the surreal overwhelming feeling of the city streets at night. I don't know if there's a name for it already but I've been calling it "street stacking" ;)

The complete guide – How to turn any lens into an “anamorfake”

Anamorphic lenses seemed to disappear in popularity for a while but there is no doubt now that they’re back in a big way. And while there are some moderately low-budget options out there from companies like Sirui, Samyang and Great Joy, they’re still above the budgets of many who just

Soft Side
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pair: James Potter x Reader; he/him.
Summary: James doesn’t let his soft side show in fear of being teased and certainly doesn’t let it known that he’s been crushing on his best mates brother. But one day, it slips free, Sirius finds out and he gets to go stargazing- Not too bad.
Warnings: Cute? Lowkey trash?? I’m sorry- I tried-
Notes: So.. I had no idea what to put for the gif- so here’s this. I’ll edit this tomorrow. Pick your house!
~DO NOT REPOST ANYWHERE~
-
If there was one thing James Potter wanted to keep secret, it was his love for all things soft. Soft stuffies, soft people, soft blankets, soft sweaters- everything soft. He knew he’d be absolutely dominated by teases and jokes if his bestest of friends were to ever find out so he never let it show. That is until he met you. You managed to take his soft side and rip it from the deep confides of his soul and layer it above his loud, prankster personality. He loved and hated it. When he was with you, he just wanted to make you flower crowns or read to you during a thunderstorm by candle light.
The hardest part of all of this was you weren’t his. Not yet, anyway. You weren’t really dating anyone and chose to focus on your very important studies. While you weren’t necessarily the best friends with the group self proclaimed as the Marauders, you were blood related to Sirius, more specifically his younger brother. So that was just another kink in the chain of James’ feelings.
I mean- who could actually fall for his best friend’s brother? Bloody James Potter. He thought sourly as he gazed at you across the dining table. Sirius had his arm wrapped around your shoulder, whispering gossip to you, probably about Snivellus or maybe Remus, but that didn’t matter. What mattered was how you covered your mouth and laughed into your hand. The raven haired student could genuinely hear you laugh, have that laugh be the only noise he hears until he dies, and he’d be content, hell, even happy about it.
“So, Potter? What’s the plan for today?” Sirius spoke up, returning said males thoughts to the blank paper laid across the table. At some point, your eyes had flickered to his, and he would swear to the heavens he could see the stars sparkling in your irises- even if that’s cheesy.
“Well, I-” He closed his textbook quickly and slid it away from him. He didn’t really think this far ahead so he didn’t know. He ran his finger tips along the tan parchment that the Marauders desperately wished would show Hogwarts in its entirety to them. “I didn’t plan anything yet.”
“Boo!” Sirius called out, smirking and winking at some Ravenclaw bird that passed by the table. “Ah, come on. I thought we’d go pick on Sniv-” He let out a groan, pulling his arm away from you to wrap them around his stomach, where you’d elbowed him.
“Stop calling him that, Sirius. He’s not a bad guy, in fact, he’s just like you, greasy hair and all.”  You snickered, watching your brother curl in on himself. That was another thing he really liked about you. You managed to reel Sirius back when he was going too far and control him, somehow. You were the only man Sirius ever listened too and it amazed James to such a degree. What magic did you hold that allowed you to stop this curly haired idiot and how does he get some?
“Why not, Chortle?” James smirked, trying to shove the love-sick grin that was desperate to spread across his lips down into non existence. He let out his own laugh when you kicked his shin lightly.
“Well, James, if you must know, bullying the kid for no reason is a major jerk move! Slytherin’s aren’t that bad!” You ignored James’ and Siruis’ gasp of shock. “Besides, you guys have got to stop giving everyone terrible nicknames!” You grinned at him, causing his cheeks to tint a soft pink. “All of your nicknames suck royal hippogriff!”
“That is not true and you know it!” James flicked his dry quill at you, his eyes wide in fake shock. “I am the Nickname King at this table, (Y/n)! If you don’t like it, you won’t be a part of the Marauders anymore.” He genuinely thought it was a cute nickname- your animagus was a hyena, after all. He thought it fit.
“First of all, I came up with the group name, you git! Second of all- no! Do not interrupt me! Second of all, I also came up with Moony AND Padfoot! You came up with Prongs! What the hell is a prong?” You joking yelled out, standing up and leaning on the table to poke his nose. James felt his blush double and was really praying no one noticed, but judging by the way Sirius was smirking at him, he knew. James’ eyes jumped between your brothers smirk and your dizzying smile.
“Well, I came up with Chortle.” James chewed on the inside of his lip, trying to ignore how his heart was speeding up in his chest. Please stop being cute- James let out a silent sigh of relief when you finally sat down and hoped your brother was smart enough to keep his mouth shut. The odds were not in James’ favor.
“Yeah, and it’s Gods awful, Prongs.” Sirius spoke up, leaning over the table some. “Maybe something like ‘love’ is more fitting for him, hmm?”
“Watch it, Padfoot.” James spat out, his hands curling into fists under the table. This was what he didn’t want. He didn’t want Sirius knowing or Remus knowing and definitely didn’t want you know he was absolutely smitten over you. You’d probably laugh at him, or hate him, or never speak to him again and he couldn’t handle that.
“What? I’m just trying to help my best mate notice the obvious cru-” Sirius shut up the exact moment James slammed his hands down on the wooden table.
“Shut it, Sirius.” He spat out again before throwing one leg over the bench, followed by the other and storming out of the dining hall, shoving his way right past Remus, who had just walked close to the table. He ignored the soft brunette's call after him and the echoing ‘what did you do?” made by the same voice. He ran his hands through his hair as he walked out of the school. “Bullocks- that- Ugh- mangy dog-” He grumbled to himself as he strutted across the courtyard, ignoring the swooning birds on the sidelines and heading straight down the stone steps to the Black Lake.
The young male in specks made a beeline straight toward the weeping willow, successfully ducking to avoid a branch before poking the knot on the bark to help it relax. He leaned against the harsh bark, his gaze casted over the reflective water. He let out a sigh, finding the harsh rays of sun far to warm for his liking. He took off his Gryffindor robe, throwing it onto one of the lower hanging branches before pulling his sweater over his head, forcing his glasses to become askew.
Once they were fixed, he set the setter next to the robe and allowed gravy to pull him to the ground. He crossed his legs into a knot as he rolled up his sleeves, still trying to actively avoid the unforgiving warmth. The male was just happy the tree was providing a nice spot of shade for him to relax under. He pushed his glasses up again, a sigh leaving his lips while he pressed his back against the bark.
“Hey.”
James whipped his head around, seeing you kind of popping out from beside the tree with a smile that had his heart stopping.
“Hey! Wha- um- What are you doing down here? Shouldn’t you be reading or studying or doing some academic even though you get the best marks of our year?” As he spoke, his head slowly lifted and his back straightened up away from the wood; he didn’t want you thinking he was a slob. His brown eyes jumped around behind the lenses, before they settled on your absolutely captivating (e/c) ones. His eyes followed yours as you sat down next to him, shedding your house robe to relieve the warmth you were also feeling. He found himself staring at your cute lips and even cuter pink cheeks. Oh, Merlin, he had it bad. Under the shady tree, it felt hotter the closer you got to his side.
“Oh, well, I felt bad for Siri being an absolute twat and decided to apologize for him. So, I’m sorry on his behalf.” You spoke up, plucking a rock free from the dirt and casually throwing it to the water, enjoying the ripple it created. While your gaze was on the lake, his was glued to his cheeks. He took in a stuttering breath before boldly wrapping an arm around your shoulders and tugging you to his side.
“You didn’t have too, Chortle! I’m all set!” He casted a smirk in your direction, praying to Merlin his heart wasn’t audible from his ribcage. His eyes widened when the blush across your face increased ten fold. “You ok?”
“Huh?” You turned toward him, your eyes mimicking a doe’s in pure innocence. “Oh! Yeah, I’m good, just um- Warm!” You couldn’t stop looking at his eyes. God, they reminded you of the forest, not that you’d admit it to his face. He was struggling to turn away from your gaze as well. He felt his lungs physically stop moving when your eyes glanced down at his semi parted lips before popping back up to his, all of it happened so fast.
“Caaann I help?” James found himself leaning in more, a genuine smile coming up to his lips. He subconsciously tightened his arm around your shoulder, his own eyes flicking down to your lips like it was some kind of signal that he prayed would mean something.
“I think you might be able too, yeah.” You whispered, leaning up ever so slightly. At this point, James’ noose was almost touching yours and he was wondering if you could see your reflection in his glasses, because he could see his own in your eyes. He wanted to say he moved in closer and connected your lips, but he couldn’t say for sure. Judging by how poorly you both actually aimed, you both surged forward. Despite James being desperate for the feeling of your lips against his, the kiss remained softer than silk. His hand cupped your cheek, gently sliding your lips to press against his more effectively
James pulled away, his grin from before growing wider. His thumb ran across your red cheek. He reached for your hand with his spare one and grasped it as if it was an injured butterfly.
“How long?” His voice was quiet, but sounded almost too loud compared to the gentle silence surrounding the two of you. “When?” He had so many questions, but wanted to focus on the most important ones.
“2 years now; since you and Sirius turned that one Slytherin statue red and gold.” You let out a soft giggle and leaned into the touch. James realized at this moment you were the softest member of your house and it only had him swooning harder for you.
“Godric, I love you, (Y/n).” He let out a snort when your eyes widened. “What?” He let go of your cheek and opted for pulling you into his side, effectively starting a snuggle session.
“Nothing! Just thought you forgot my name. I’m glad you didn’t!” You played with the males fingers. The seeker could never have forgotten your name. It echoed in his dreams, he saw it written in stars, and he heard it everywhere he turned. He literally couldn’t escape it.
“I’d never forget the name of my love.” Forever the smooth talker. He smiled wider when you let out another bunch of giggles. He would never get tired of that sound. The two of you jumped when someone coughed. You both turned to see Remus and Sirius standing just off to the side, right outside of your peripheral vision.
“Hey! What happened to Marauders before my baby brother?” Sirius put his hands on his waist, a knowing smile spread across his lips. James groaned. He’d rather deal with a Devil's Snare.
“I’m not your baby brother!” You cried out, your face turning redder than ever. You threw a small rock at your brother, watching it bounce pathetically off his chest. “Merlin.” You grumbled, curling into James’ side.
“Siri, be happy for them!” Remus hit the males chest with a book. “At least it’s out and they can stop swooning in secret.” The werewolf turned back to the new couple. “Besides, they’re cute together.” He stated before walking off, dragging Sirius away by his sleeve.
“Wait, no, I’m not done teasing my little brother!”
“Yes, you are. Did you know James had a soft side though?”
The pair of voices faded as they walked back up the stone steps, allowing the couple to watch the lake reflect the beautiful scenery around it and just chat. The couple didn’t move until the stars replaced the sun and every constellation had been pointed out in the night sky. Sure, it was past curfew, but neither cared. They had each other.

Best Street Photography in Kuala Lumpur Photo Collection #2
Tumblr media
Exploring street photography in Kuala Lumpur and walking through the busy streets with my camera, here I handpicked the best moments to share in this 2024 series. I roamed from the lively Chinatown KL to the cultural richness of Masjid India, the tranquil Thean Hou Temple, and the scenic wonders of Genting Highlands with my friend Dom – capturing both indoor and outdoor scenes. My tools of choice were the Samyang 12mm f2 and the beloved SIRUI Sniper 23mm f1.2 lenses for the Fujifilm X-Mount.Using wide-angle lenses posed a challenge when transitioning from expansive views to close-up shots. To simplify, I mostly relied on Aperture Priority mode, letting the camera handle settings like ISO and shutter speed, except for tricky situations like capturing fast movements or handling harsh sunlight.Previously, I shared my experiences with the Samyang lens during adventures in Pudu and Chinatown KL. I'm drawn to creating visually appealing compositions using leading lines, and I experimented with Fujifilm settings like Teal Obscure and Neon Obscura, avoiding extensive post-processing as I shot in SOOC JPEG.Beyond the technicalities, street photography is a delightful way to express creativity. Trying out different lenses allows me to discover unique moments on the streets and observe how each lens captures the essence of Kuala Lumpur. It's an enjoyable exploration, each photograph telling a story of the city's vibrant life through my lens.
Shooting in Low-Light, Indoor Street Photography. What?
Tumblr media
Fujifilm X-T4 - Pudu KL // January 2024 I enjoy taking pictures in low light using my SIRUI Sniper 23mm f1.2, especially when I'm indoors. It allows me to experiment with my Fujifilm film simulation settings, creating some cool effects. Even though I'm not an expert in street photography in Kuala Lumpur, I love searching for interesting moments. Typically, I only end up with 2 or 3 good photos out of 200, but that's what makes it enjoyable for me. Every time I go out to Kuala Lumpur for street photography, I'm still learning.Using the SIRUI Sniper 23mm f1.2 can be a bit challenging for me. Sometimes, the view is too wide unless I get close to my subjects. It depends on the scene I'm capturing. Despite the challenges, it adds a bit of excitement and unpredictability to my street photography adventures in Kuala Lumpur.I tried something new with my SIRUI Sniper 23mm f1.2 lens – I took neon light portraits in the dark. The results were amazing! The colorful glow from the neon lights made the pictures look cool and exciting. The way the shadows and lights played together, along with the lens's wide aperture, helped create awesome and unforgettable photos. It was a fun experiment that showed how creative you can get with the SIRUI Sniper lens. I'm looking forward to trying more cool photo ideas soon!
Shooting Street Photography in Kuala Lumpur With Telephoto Lens
Tumblr media
Fujifilm X-T4 - Thean Hou Temple KL // January 2024 Exploring street photography in Kuala Lumpur with a telephoto lens was a completely new experience for me, and I must say, it was a lot of fun! What I found most enjoyable was the convenience that comes with using a telephoto lens. It makes capturing shots from a distance a breeze, eliminating the need to get up close and personal with strangers. This not only makes composition easier but also ensures I can capture the exact shot I have in mind without any awkward encounters. One of the perks I discovered was the reduced anxiety about approaching potentially unfriendly-looking individuals. As an INFJ-T, I tend to be a bit reserved, and the telephoto lens provided a comforting buffer. I could capture intriguing moments without feeling the need to intrude into someone's personal space or risk awkward glances from passersby. It allowed me to observe and document without becoming the center of attention. However, as much as I enjoyed the convenience of the telephoto lens, I still have a soft spot for shooting with my prime lenses up close. There's a different level of intimacy and connection when you're right there in the midst of the action. So, while the telephoto lens opened up new possibilities and made the process less intimidating, I find joy in both approaches, each offering its own unique perspective on the vibrant streets of Kuala Lumpur.
Petaling Street - Street Photography in Kuala Lumpur
Tumblr media
Fujifilm X-T4 // SIRUI Sniper 23mm f1.2 // YOLO Vision recipe I took this picture on the second day of Chinese New Year in 2024, and I love it. The background was a bit busy, but I enjoyed how the 'dragon dancers' lying down—if that's what they're called—were swinging the pole, creating the illusion of the dragon moving quickly. The people in the middle, looking amazed, add to the magic of the moment, making this one of my favorite photos from this year. I used the SIRUI Sniper 23mm at f8 to capture this photo, and the lighting at that moment was just perfect! This is where I usually go – exploring Petaling Street almost every weekend to capture moments. Just a reminder, I'm no expert, and I often face challenges whenever I'm out on the street. LOL! Petaling Street is widely recognized as one of the best street photography locations in Kuala Lumpur. It's a fantastic spot to capture vibrant moments. Plus, you're likely to meet and make new friends while exploring this iconic street.I've been taking pictures at Petaling Street since 2020, and you know what? I can't say if my street photography has gotten better or not. Maybe a bit, maybe not at all. What I do know is the basic techniques, which is useful for shooting street photography in Kuala Lumpur like how to frame a shot, use the rule of thirds, and all that. These things help me take what I think are good photos, at least in my own opinion.
Exploring Masjid India - Street Photography in Kuala Lumpur
Tumblr media
Fujifilm X-T4 - Masjid India KL // January 2024 I decided to extensively explore every nook and cranny of the hidden areas in Masjid India. Capturing photos here posed a significant challenge for me, shooting face to face with subjects, only works if you are brave enough or use the fishing techniques—a recent trend in the street photography Malaysia community.Interestingly, I have yet to try using this street photography technique in Kuala Lumpur due to the scorching weather and my attempt to avoid sunburn. LOL! So far, I've only experimented with this technique at the Thean Hou Temple. This approach adds a unique perspective to my street photography adventures, and I'm excited to continue experimenting with it in the future.
'Camping & Fishing' At The Thean Hou Temple in Kuala Lumpur
Tumblr media
Fujifilm X-T4 - Thean Hou Temple KL // January 2024 I'm considering introducing a new topic on street photography fishing techniques in my blog soon, complete with some sample photos, of course. Well again, I'm no expert, I'll just write what I have experienced. But before diving into that, let me share my camping and fishing experience at the Thean Hou Temple for capturing some amazing shots. I spent about 2-3 hours there, camping out to make the most of my Fujinon XC50-230mm telephoto lens. It was a unique adventure, and the results were well worth the time spent. There are numerous 'camping spots,' whether positioned below or above, that provide ample opportunities to employ this technique at the location. The use of a telephoto lens further simplifies the process, allowing for easy zooming from a distance without causing any disturbance to others. This approach not only offers a unique perspective but also ensures the capture of candid moments without intruding on the natural flow of the surroundings.
Conclusion
Tumblr media
Shot with Ricoh GR III Wow! Such a great experience so far. I got to try out the Ricoh GR III for street photography in Kuala Lumpur, and I got some cool shots! It was mostly luck and timing. I called it one of the best street photography cameras. LOL! Don't you think? For a first-timer trying street photography with the Ricoh GR III, it was challenging, and you might end up with a bunch of snapshots like I did!In conclusion, this journey through Kuala Lumpur's vibrant streets has been a delightful exploration of moments captured through my lens. From the lively Chinatown KL to the cultural richness of Masjid India, the tranquil Thien Hou Temple, and the scenic wonders of Genting Highlands, each location brought a unique charm to the series. The choice of lenses, such as the Samyang 12mm f2 and the SIRUI Sniper 23mm f1.2, added a technical layer to the creative process. Overcoming challenges, particularly with wide-angle lenses and experimenting with various Fujifilm settings, further enriched the storytelling aspect of the photographs.Engaging in street photography in Kuala Lumpur, whether with the SIRUI Sniper 23mm f1.2, a telephoto lens, or the Ricoh GR III, presented different perspectives and challenges. From low-light shots to neon light experiments, each endeavor contributed to the diversity of the collection.

Fujifilm X-T4 - Pasar Karat KL // January 2024 To enhance your street photography skills, consider enrolling in online courses, drawing inspiration from the best street photography photo books, and hitting the streets to capture more moments. Online photography courses provide valuable insights and techniques, while photo books offer a visual feast of diverse styles. However, the most significant growth comes from hands-on experience, so get out there, observe, and shoot to refine your craft and develop a unique perspective. While the learning curve was evident, whether using a telephoto lens for distance shots or facing the unpredictability of a wide-angle lens, each experience added a layer of excitement to the street photography journey. The spontaneity and unpredictability became integral elements, fostering a connection between the lens and the lively streets of Kuala Lumpur.Despite the technical aspects and varied lens experiments, at its core, street photography remained an avenue for expressing creativity. Whether shooting up close or from a distance, the essence of capturing unique moments and stories unfolded naturally.Reflecting on Petaling Street, a renowned location for the best street photography in Kuala Lumpur, the journey continued. While acknowledging personal growth in basic techniques, the heart of the matter remained the enjoyment of capturing moments. The challenges faced in each shot, the excitement of trying new lenses, and the exploration of different settings encapsulated the joy found in the art of street photography. As the photographic journey unfolds, it becomes a testament to the evolving connection between the photographer and the vibrant life of Kuala Lumpur's streets. Each photograph encapsulates a story, a moment frozen in time, and a reflection of the photographer's unique perspective on the dynamic tapestry of the city's life.

The JarredSpec Introduction to Milkyway Landscape Photography for beginners. Part I: Gear!
This is a series of posts i’ll be posting over on Patreon and my Website over the next few weeks. Patrons get them a week earlier than anyone else :) Part II coming Next week!
If you’ve been following me for the past few years you’ll have noticed that I do enjoy going out at ridiculous times of night in the freezing cold to point my camera at the stars. The shot above is from my first real attempt at deliberately shooting the Milkyway.So. With the intent of going out this season and dragging a few people out with me, I thought i’d write a quick blog post covering what gear you need (plus some gear that makes the job easier), the basics of shooting and some basic tips on composition.
GEAR
MUST HAVES:
An interchangeable lens camera and a wide angle lens. Not saying that this sort of stuff can’t be done with point and shoots to some extent and even smartphones these days, but we’re going to start with people who have already invested in some dedicated photography gear. The lens ideally should be wide angle and have a maximum aperture of f/3.5 or faster at its widest focal length. This is still not ideal, but I’m aiming this at beginners who most likely have an 18-55mm kit lens with their camera.
Tripod: This is a must. Shooting the milkyway comes under the umbrella of “Long Exposure Photography” and as we will be having our shutters open for up to and sometimes longer than 30 seconds, the camera needs to be held in place without it being able to be shaken. I use the Sirui AM-254 with A10R Ballhead - a fantastic sub $500NZD Carbon Fibre tripod. Look forward to a Youtube video with an overview of this guy!
WARM CLOTHES. You’re going out at night, probably in winter. No ones needs to bring Hypothermia home along with their epic Milkyway shot.Editing Software: To bring the best out of the Milkyway, we will be shooting RAW and processing the Image. Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop are probably the most popular editing tools worldwide and are what I use to edit all of my images. Worth the purchase!
BONUS EQUIPMENT:
A remote shutter release. These are handy to make sure you don’t introduce and camera shake while you’re pressing the shutter button, and to allow precise shutter durations in bulb mode. Sometimes a lens might be optimal at something like 19 seconds, and your camera might only have 15sec and 20sec available to select while in manual mode. Setting it to the longer might introduce unacceptable levels of star movement. I use an old school Cable release with my Fujifilm X-T4, but if you shoot with any other main brands you can probably get your hands on a wireless remote if you shoot Canon, Nikon or Sony
A fast, wide angle lens. When we describe a lens as “fast” were are speaking about its maximum aperture. A “fast” lens will generally have an aperture of f/2.8 or larger (remember, the lower the “f/X.X” number, the wider/larger the aperture). Fast wide angle lenses usually don’t come cheap, especially from the main camera companies themselves. Thankfully third party options are out there and offer fantastic value while performing very well. Tokina and Samyang are notable examples of this. If you shooting Nikon or Canon Id recommend looking at the Samyang 14mm f/2.8 or the Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8 (or its older version, the 11-16mm f2/8 on the second hand market). If shooting Fujifilm or Sony the Samyang 12mm f2.0 is fantastic and is currently my chosen lens. Caveat: The Samyang lenses are manual focus only, something to consider if you intend on using the lens for anything other than Astrolandscapes.
A Light pollution filter. This is bottom of the list. Not even slightly necessary to shoot the Milkyway, but at times can be handy to filter out the spectrum of light cities tend to produce. These are becoming less and less useful as the world moves more towards LED lighting. Up until recently I have been using a Hoya RA54 “Red Enhancer/Intensifier”  but have since moved to a Kase Clip in “Neutral Night” filter via Meghan Maloney Photography here in NZ. These are nifty lil suckers - look forward to a video on this guy too. Stay tuned for Part II where we talk about planning, composition and shooting! Comment below with any further questions you might have and ill do my best to answer them!
