I need to write something really seamy, for my health. Right now I’m treating my writing burnout mostly by focusing on other ways of making art — bookbinding, printmaking, zines, fanart — but I think if the right idea for some lewd fanfiction struck me, it would fix me.

ooh I am really intrigued about that young royals trailer! are there a lot of differences from the subtitles to what they are actually saying? I have seen a few people say something similar but haven't seen anything written out.
File this under "Things I didn't know I needed: Explaining all the subtle differences between what's being said in Swedish in the Young Royals Season 3 trailer, and what the subtitles say."
It's similar, but there are just some small changes that give a different *vibe*, you know?
For example in the opening scene, what Simon literally says is "Hur har du drömt att det ska vara?", a.k.a. "How have you dreamed it should be?" It's not a super common way of phrasing it in Swedish either, so I'd probably go with, "In your dream, what did you think/hope it would/should be like?"
When Wille says "Jag vill bara att vi ska kunna ha ett privatliv" (lit. "I just want for us to be able to have a private life"), to me, there's a slight difference between "privatliv" (privacy in one's personal life) and "ett privat liv" (a private life). I'd go with, "I just want us to be able to have some privacy in our personal lives."
And then there are the small filler words, which I know are left out of subs, always. But they add nuance!
When the blonde girl says "Vem skriver du med, då?" (lit. "Who are you writing with, then?"), it's more like, "So, who are you texting?"
And then Felice answers "Wille kommer tillbaks idag, ba(ra)" (lit. "Wille comes back today, just/only"), which is more like, "It's just that Wille is coming back today". Both "ba" and "tillbaks" are informal versions of "bara" and "tillbaka", which adds to the *shrug, no big deal* vibe.
And then the blonde answers, "Vadå, det är ju en så stor grej ju!" (lit. "What, that is such a big thing!"). But! There's no way of translating "ju" – it's a filler word that means "as you/we already know/are aware of". It's not even grammatically correct to add it twice, but it happens in speech when you REALLY want to emphasize the "girl, what are you talking about, we KNOW this" part. I'd translate it as "What? But that's huge!" The "ju" comes back when the blonde woman says, "Jag vet ju att det är lite spänt mellan dig och August" (lit. "I know (as we both do) that it's a bit tense between you and August").
Then we jump to a very long sentence that I understand they had to shorten – Wille saying, "Om du tror att jag kommer låta dig ta över så kan du glömma det!" (Lit. "If you think that I will let you take over, so can you forget it" – this isn't a question, Swedish word order in subordinate clauses is just very different from English). If we had enough space, I'd go with "If you think I'm going to let you take over, you can forget about it!"
Then it's just super small differences. Simon says, "Vad är det som du tycker är så bra med monarkin?" ("What is it that you think is so good with the monarchy?"); the principal (I think) says, "Hela skolans framtid hänger på den här utredningen" ("The whole school's future hangs on this investigation"); the blonde woman says "Hillerska kan tvingas stänga, med omedelbar verkan" ("Hillerska might be forced to close down, effective immediately"); and Wille says, "Vad händer om jag inte vill det?" (lit. "What happens if I don't want that?")
Then I've only just realized Swedes tend to start sentences with "but", which sometimes is more like a filler word, to "soften" the sentence. For example, the queen says "Men vi kan inte ha såna här skandaler mer!" ("But we can't have these types of scandals anymore"). (That is followed by her saying, "Så ska du kunna ta över efter mig", ("So you should be able to take over after me") which is a subordinate clause, which means there was something that came before/after that wasn't included in the trailer.) And Simon says "Men jag försöker att alltid finnas där för honom, men vad jag än gör så, ah, så blir det fel" ("But I always try to be there for him, but whatever I do, then, yeah, then it turns out wrong").
And then there's the "Hur kommer man över sin bästa vän?" ("How do you get over your best friend?") In Swedish, we use "man" (lit. "man") instead of "you", so it's more like a less formal way of saying "How does one get over one's best friend?" – I'd still translate it as "you", though.
August swears! "Jag har saknat dig så jävla mycket att det gör ont." ("I've missed you so fucking much that it hurts!") Swearing in general is a lot more okay in Swedish society, than in for example England or the US, based on my own experiences – it's done at all levels of society, by everyone (especially kids/teenagers, even in school), except for maybe at work or in very formal situations.
Simon says "Kan vi inte ba skita i allt som har hänt?" ("Can't we just ignore everything that's happened?") "Skita i" literally means "to shit in", is pretty informal and could be translated with "to not give a shit about", "to ignore" or "to skip", depending on the circumstances. Wiktionary claims it's vulgar, but I'd use it with family and friends, no problem.
So yeah! There's just more life in the actual dialogue, I think :) And I know that that's always the case, and that the translator doing the subs has limited space and time, and they need to make it work in English without adding explanations, etc., etc. So overall, I think they've done a good job – but I'm still glad I speak Swedish :)

I'd be curious to hear your Ob-la-di Ob-la-da take lol
I claimed Ob-la-di Ob-la-da as a political song. No, I'm not kidding.
Obviously, Ob-la-di Ob-la-da isn't a protest song. It's a perky ska-style number about the happy, everyday life of an immigrant family. And it was released in 1968, when immigration had just become the most inflammatory topic in British politics.
In spring 1968, the UK government proposed a new Race Relations bill, making it illegal to refuse housing, employment, or public services to anyone on the grounds of race or national origin. It was a response to racism, particularly against recent immigrants, especially those from the Caribbean.
Cue a lot more racism, most notoriously from politician Enoch Powell, who gave what is still commonly referred to today as the "Rivers of blood" speech. Powell ranted about sending "the immigrant and immigrant-descended population" back to the countries they or their families had once come from. He was particularly freaked out by the idea that, having come to Britain, people would settle down and - horrors - have babies, eventually outnumbering the white population. Powell was sacked by his party the next day, but he sparked a horrible wave of racist protest and abuse.
Tumblr media
All this was brewing over the summer, as The Beatles worked on the White Album, and on this song. What is Ob-la-di Ob-la-da about? It's an everyday love story. The ska style frames Desmond and Molly as Jamaican - which, in a British context, strongly suggests that they're immigrants. The song builds a happy ending out of exactly the things that racists like Powell were terrified that immigrants would do. They work, get married, and have children, who grow up and help with the family business. Life going on, happy ever after.
The Beatles were certainly aware of the tensions sparked by Powell, immigration and the Race Relations Act; they were still talking about it, and trying to write a protest song about it, in the Get Back sessions in January 1969. Ob-la-di Ob-la-da doesn't talk directly about any of that. Its subjects - work, home, children - are the sort of thing that 1970s rock journalists would put down as Paul's normie bourgeois sensibilities.
But normie is where most people live. The song presents Desmond and Molly as deeply relatable. It assumes that their happy ending is something everyone can root for and sing along with. That is not an apolitical act, particularly not in Britain in 1968.
youtube
And people did sing along, in their millions. Ob-la-di was staggeringly popular. The Beatles didn't release it as a single in the UK or the US (though it topped charts in Australia, Japan and Europe). There were multiple competing cover versions. One by the band Marmalade went to No 1 in Britain, and sold about a million copies. Paul's own favourite cover was by The Bedrocks, whose members were all first-generation immigrants from the Caribbean.
(Obviously, there are other questions here about race, music, and appropriation; The Beatles, and most of the artists doing cover versions, are white people singing black music. Hello, history of western popular music.)
As I said, this isn't a protest song. But it has been sung in protest. @beatleshistoryblog found this great footage from a Women's March in London in 1971. Just listen to the first seconds: la la la la life goes on.

May I ask for general dating headcanons for Grog, Scanlan, Percy and Vax pretty please?
Dating the boys of Vox Machina
I love how different all the party members are. They're such different characters, so writing for them as a group is a lot of fun.
Grog Strongjaw, Scanlan Shorthalt, Percy de Rolo & Vax'ildan x Reader
Fandom: The Legend of Vox Machina
Format: Headcanons
Gender-neutral Reader
Critical Role Masterlist Commission Info
Grog
Our favorite himbo <3
He likes how easily he can pick you up. It makes him happy to swing you up onto his shoulder and carry you around with him. It doesn't matter what you weigh, he can pick you up.
He will forget how strong he is and he will hug you too hard. This will happen on a very regular basis. I wish you and your bones luck.
"Look at them! They're so pretty and they're mine!"
Grog will tell Pike about you all the time. She knows your favorite color, which jokes you laugh at, and every other detail that Grog memorizes about you.
He likes gifting you his war trophies from fights. These can range from neat magical items to just straight-up gore. He means well.
Scanlan
Scanlan is...a lot. We all know this.
He loves over-the-top pickup lines. The more raunchy, the better. They are awful. He knows this. He will not admit it.
Past the dramatics, he genuinely does love to properly romance you. He thrives on traditional gestures like chocolates and flowers.
You are serenaded every other night. Sometimes it's a heartfelt ballad, sometimes it's a ska cover of Careless Whisper.
It doesn't matter how long you have been dating him, he is constantly wooing you. It's a lot of fun for him to try and make you blush.
Percy
Three am conversations in his workshop while he drafts a new invention are a frequent occurrence. He will ruin your sleep schedule if you let him.
He will give you so many gifts and they will all be ridiculously practical. He picks up on a lot of details on how you fight in order to make you things that will help.
He's a workaholic and you will have to pull him away from it sometimes. Maybe remind him to eat food as well. In exchange, he'll make sure you do too.
Percy will get very intense about things, it is a part of his personality. It can be very overwhelming to have that intensity focused on you.
He does not consciously register how attractive it is when he casually makes a difficult shot with his gun, but he will notice you drooling over him and he will make fun of you.
Vax
He's actually nearly as much of a flirt as Scanlan is, he's just much subtler about it.
He thinks it's very funny to quip about how he 'stole your heart.' You will hear this joke too often.
Gaining Vex's trust is actually a very important component of dating Vax because they're very protective of each other. If you get her to trust and like you, she will tell you you have bad taste in men.
He likes bringing you out for dates late in the evening so he can show you secret parts of the city and point out stars and constellations to you.
Don't worry about whether the gifts he gives you are bought or stolen. It's for the best to leave that question unasked.

Author's pov
You sighed pulling the fluffy blanket around you tighter and took a sip of your hot chocolate smiling softly as you watched the snow falling and disappearing on the ground. You were sitting on the arm chair in front of the big window in your living room watching the first snow of the season falling. But soon your smile turned into a frown when you noticed there was no hot chocolate left in your cup amd just as you went to stand up to make another cup for yourself, a hand on your shoulder stopped you. You jumped slightly and looked behind you with wide eyes which softened when you saw him standing there with a cup in this hand "did i scared you?" He mumbled, his voice raspy as he took your empty cup and replaced it with the one he bought. You smiled softly as he kissed your forehead and wrapped the blanket around you properly when it slipped down because of your movement. You shaked your head and smiled looking at the cup and then at him. Silently thanking him because your hands were full so you couldn't sign it. He still understood you. He always does. He smiled with his eyes softening as he took you in. Looking so soft and tiny under the huge blanket and he knows you're wearing his hoodie underneath. He stared at you for a moment as you took a sip, relaxing as he rubbed your back. But as he noticed you still shivering, he sighed mumbling "you shouldn't sit here for so long angel. You'll catch a cold"
You shaked your head with a pout causing him to chuckle and your cheeks warmed up at the beautiful sound. You looked at the snow again before looking at him causing him to shake his head "no you're not going out there doll. It's cold. C'mon let's take a nap?" You sighed pouting even more but your eyes betrayed you as they started getting heavier and a yawn escaped your lips causing him to smile, Chuckling raspily. Taking your cup from your hand you looked at him confused as he placed it on the side table before bending down slightly. But the moment his arms went to wrap around your form, a harsh flinch racked your body causing him to freeze for a moment as you pushed yourself in the chair, looking down. His lips parted and his jaw clenched as he looked down, so you wouldn't see the hurt in his eyes and took a step back. Of course he wasn't mad at you. He would never be. But he was mad no furious at the people who made you this way. The people who were supposed to care for you after your parents died.
He still remembers how you used to flinch around him and make yourself smaller in the beginning of your relationship. And just when he hopes that things are starting to get better...
You have no idea how much he yearns to hear your voice. How much he yearns for your touch. But he'll wait. He will wait as long as you want him to. Just so he could maybe one day hear you laugh without a care in the world. He learned sign language for you. So you could talk to him freely without having to write everything. And at that time you were so happy. It was the first time someone did this for you. At that time you told him everything. How you were used to get abused, how you were never allowed to speak. So eventually you stopped using your voice when you were at the young age of 13.
He knows everything and he'll always be patient with you. But sometimes it gets so hard. It's hurts him so fucking much to see the girl he loves getting scared of him. But he knows that he has to be strong for you. Because he knows that he's not just talking to the 24 year of y/n. But the 13 years old y/n too.
So taking a shaky breath, he looked up and felt his heart clench painfully when he saw you looking at him with teary eyes and wobbly lips. 'I'm so sorry' you signed hastily as a tear left your eyes which he immediately wanted to wipe. But he clenched his hand and crouched down in front of you, slowly taking your hand and sighing in relief when you didn't jump away. "It's okay doll. It's fine" he murmured wiping your tear, his eyes getting misty when you leaned against his touch 'i'm sorry' you held his hand, hugging it to your chest to which he shaked his head, signing back 'it's okay' 'you are not mad?' You sniffled and he shaked his head smiling softly "never" he rasped out. And you were silent for a moment making him worry but his eyes widened when you leaned forward and wrapped your arms around his neck and fully leaned against his firm chest. A shaky breath left his lips and he wrapped his arms around your waist, hoisting you up with him effortlessly as you wrapped your legs around his waist. His hold around you was tight and secure as he pressed a soft kiss on your neck and closed the bedroom door with his leg. You sighed as he laid you down gently and kissed your forehead , lingering for moment before pulling back.
You watched as he laid besides you and pulled the covers over your body. He rubbed your cheek softly and you held his hand again, causing him to smile softly as your eyes started dropping.
You were pulled back into conciousness when you felt his hand slipping from your hold and opened your eyes to see him turning on his back in his sleep. You watched him for a moment. Just admiring his soft face with his hair falling over his face. His lips parted as soft breathes puffed out. Tentatively, you moved a little closer, stopping for a moment to see if he's moving. When you were sure he was still asleep, you moved close to him until your chest was pressed against his arm. You bite your bottom lip and placed a gentle hand on his chest, feeling the outline of the necklace you gave him. You smiled softly. He has been wearing the necklace since you gave it to him. It must have been almost 8 months since then.
Looking at his face, you felt your heartbeat increasing as your gaze fell on his lips. Looking at him one last time to make sure he's asleep, you leaned down slowly, your hand softly cupping his cheek as you pressed your lips on his in a gentle kiss. Your eyes closed at the feeling as you pulled back slightly, "i-i love you yoongi" your voice came out whispered and small as you cleared your throat wanting to say it more clearly. But as you went to pull back, your eyes widened and you gapsed when his arm wrapped around your waist, pulling you on top of him as you looked at him shyly and slight embarrassed. But your gaze softened when you saw the shine in his eyes "one more" he begged looking at you with desperate eyes as your hands gripped his t shirt and you took a deep breath before leaning down and pressing your lips on his again. Only this time,he kissed you back, his one hand still holding your waist and another one cupping your jaw as you curled up in his chest. He gasped softly as he pulled back, fresh tears filling his eyes when you whispered "i-i love you" looking at him with innocence and purity in your eyes. He placed an arm over his eyes to hide his tears but you held his arm whispering "don't h-hide please" and a sob left his lips as you pulled his arm back and wrapped your arms around his neck. He buried his face in your neck and his arms wrapped around you tightly as if he never wants to let you go. You felt your own eyes getting teary when you felt the wetness on your neck as he held you desperately whispering "i love you too angel. I love you so fucking much. You're so fucking perfect i love you-" he choked up hugging you tighter and you rubbed his back whispering "I'm here yoongi" he pulled back, his eyes staring in your own for a moment before he mumbled "say my name" "yoongi " you whispered shyly and he leaned his head against yours. He wanted to say so many things. Tell you how fucking happy he was, how beautiful you sounded but he couldn't find the right words to say it. So he spoke with his actions.
He kissed you again. This time more desperately as he poured all his love in the kiss hoping you understand what he was trying to say. And of course you did.
Small gasps and whimpers of his name left your lips as he made love to you. Holding you securely. You felt so safe in his arms as low growls and moans of your name left his lips. Praising you. Worshipping you. But most of all, he let you know how much he loves you.
Your love for him was pure and innocent. And he would do anything to protect it.

Why *does* TPOFATGIF work for readers with no Yu-Gi-Oh background?
As one of those readers, I’ve been mulling on this for awhile and I think I’ve identified part of that success.  It comes down to characterization.  Yu-Gi-Oh may have provided the framework, but you are writing each of these people (and they’re so well-described and embedded in the story – I do call them people...) in such detail that familiarity with the source material is frankly unnecessary.  I’m pretty sure I could do a find+replace to change every major Yu-Gi-Oh character name (i.e. Rex Raptor -> Terry Dactyl) and the people would read the same and the story would still fundamentally hang together.
To drift into metaphor, it’s like being an American who grew up with access to only cheap milk chocolate when they start to eat the higher quality varieties (or get ahold of some from Canada or Europe).  The chocolate tastes way better but there’s a layer of nuance to the reasons it’s better that they lack the experience to be able to identify and articulate.
I expect that fandom readers have that bonus layer of nuance, but I can still tell that TPOFATGIF is high quality chocolate even if I don’t have the vocabulary to describe how. I’m rather excited that if I ever do experience Yu-Gi-Oh, it will end up being my nuance-layer added to the world of TPOFATGIF instead of the reverse.
Firstly, this is the nicest fucking thing ever and it made my whole weekend to read it.
Second, I took me a while to read it, because I am SO DELIGHTED by the name "Terry Dactyl" that I've decided to make Terri canon to TPOFATGIF. She's Rex's Paleontology Rival- He's a Bob Bakker stan, she's in Dr. Horner's Corner. He's enamored of Dinosaurs and Dinosaurs specifically, she's a huge fan of the Reptiles and proto-mammals and other creatures that were alive at the same time. While he was on a dig looking for a new Spinosaur holotype in Egypt, she was excavating lots of fun and exciting creatures in the Luohandong formation in Mongolia. He's dating fellow card game enthusiast Weevil Underwood, Terri has been seen about town with fellow TTRPG fan Arachne Von Kellar.
Arachne and Weevil know each other through a mutual interest in Ska Music and Roller Derby.

fall out boy on absolute radio listening party 3.26.23
[link]
the host asks about the parentheses around for in the album title - pete says it's "a double or triple entendre, everyone's trying to be someone and have their moment but that doesn't fill you up" but "there's something to be said about so much stardust." talks about how we're all just carbon, stardust and still can't get it together. he also just love parentheses!
talking about the album as an art form - patrick says they absolutely consider that and sequencing is important. there are a "few songs" which only made the record because of how well they told the story of the album. also love from the other side was conceptualized as an album opener because patrick felt none of the other songs felt like an opener!
the intro to lftos is patrick playing the same piano part at four different speeds, starting in sync and then falling out of sync as it continues - he says it feels representative of the whole album for him
with hold me like a grudge, pete says when patrick first played it for him the verses sounded like 2000s alternative radio hits but the chorus sounded "distinctly patrick" which was an "interesting blend." patrick: hm. thank you. i think. pete: yeah that was a compliment!
hold me like a grudge was the last song they wrote for the record! pete was second guessing other lyrics and sent patrick new lyrics to possibly replace the ones he was feeling unsure about. patrick read them before driving to the studio and by the time he got there the song was basically written in full.
pete makes a comment about how that's at least two songs "that people really like" that patrick's written in the car (referencing lotro); patrick says he's written a lot of songs in the car and pete jokes they should just toss him the keys
pete says it's the worst when you think of something in the car and are sure you'll remember it but you don't. says now when he thinks of something in the car when he's with bronx he'll tell him to write down words to trigger the whole phrase "but they don't make any sense together. i'll be like write this down and he'll be like '...okay." andy: like dad shut up [giggles]
fake out didn't come together until joe heard it! patrick had most of the lead guitar down but none of the rhythm guitar but "joe came in, gave it one listen, and picked up this acoustic. none of us had really thought about acoustic, he just went into the booth and we pressed record and he did it in one take... that became kinda the whole song."
patrick talks about soul punk briefly, says the most surprising thing about making it was that it was very unsurprising, because all the ideas were already in his head. part of why he enjoys working with the band so much is that they have ideas he never would've thought of.
they discuss changing sound - pete says the first time he had that feeling of like "oh i don't know if this is too different" he was scared of it but he's learned that it's a good thing and that there's always going to be so much of the band's dna on it that it Will sound like a fall out boy song
andy: i think a band can not just be a city it can be a continent. writing these different things is building the map to what the bigger picture is
they bring up queen and bowie as examples of artists that kept changing but now when you hear their songs you just think "oh that's queen" or "oh that's bowie." the host mentions he used to hide liking queen from his friends and patrick says he had to hide liking ska from the band. andy says he's had a really big reggae and ska phase recently and loves being able to talk to patrick about it because "he's a fountain of knowledge."
heaven, iowa is one of andy's favorite on the record and he loved it from the start! patrick reiterates a comment from another interview about how he didn't like it that much at first but knew everyone else did, kept asking joe for any and all ideas because he didn't like how much "space" there was and how naked his vocals felt. andy says he thinks space in music can be magical.
they talk about track sequencing again - patrick says he and pete moved "the meat of the album" around many, many times.
pete talks about the pink seashell interlude and being obsessed with mortality. patrick talks about the process of scoring it and how joe added guitar to the string lines which he thinks brought it all together.
they didn't start out thinking they necessarily had a record - patrick says "we went in with neal for a week to see if we had something and by the end of the week we had half the record.”
patrick's been asking people to tell him fan reactions to the record since he doesn't have social media 🥺 "i know i've been driving everyone nuts... i've been asking everyone 'do people like it? what do people think?'" reiterates the dinner for your family line to explain why this record means so much to him.
pete says making an album is kind of like being a climber standing at the bottom of a rock face trying to find a route up; when you get up the route might seem like it was obvious the whole time but it wasn't. patrick chimes in to agree and add that it feels like the song that was the centerpoint of the album shifted many times.
the host mentions that he really likes and relates to the title of "i am my own muse." pete talks about looking at his four year old and thinking about how "at that age, you Are your own muse. you're like 'i just color, i do what i want, i'm not trying to conform to your idea of my creativity' and welcoming some of that back into your life as an adult or an artist is great.'"
the host mentions that his nine year old son's favorite song ever is "centuries" and the band are appropriately flattered (though patrick does say sorry when the host says he's probably heard it more than any other song ever ajfioenaj).
going back to the discussion of different songs being the centerpoint of the album, patrick says flu game was "one of the first songs to have that spot."
patrick talks about not being the most confident guy but that he's learned to share all of his demos; he thinks he might not have played flu game in the past. pete chimes in to say in the past patrick has tried to throw out some of his best ideas.
patrick says flu game "kind of started the record" because it was the favorite out of the first five songs they made with neal. "this was the one that convinced neal i think." pete notes "this would've been an insane record if [flu game] was the lynchpin."
flu game was originally the lead single! pete: you know how we always talk about how if we were gonna fly in a helicopter that i would have to knock you out like b.a. baracus? patrick, instantly: yes. pete: if we had made this the first single you guys would've had to b.a. baracus me. patrick, protesting: that wasn't my choice!
pete says baby annihilation felt like an authentic way to pay homage to his past spoken word bits and he trusted neal to be able to make it work.
they have a discussion about the distinctions between emo/pop punk/straightedge hardcore and pete talks about how arbitrary the labels that are assigned to musicians often are. pete talks about how fall out boy started as kind of a break from the more hardcore stuff for him that he was doing for fun which allowed it to be more freeing. patrick agrees, talks about how andy and pete were in "real bands" so no one was taking fall out boy completely seriously which allowed them to be looser.
kintsugi kid was one of the songs patrick was mentioning earlier that was almost cut from the record but made it because of the track sequencing. patrick says he always felt very strongly about it and believed in it so was very glad when it made its way back on to the record. pete calls it the little song that could.
the host asks about their songwriting process and pete talks about how the best songs are the ones where he and patrick "clash" just the right amount; songs where one of them dominates over the other don't connect as well.
they discuss the different producers they've worked with; pete says every producer they've worked with has felt like the right person for the job. patrick talks about how working with so many different producers is part of why he wanted to go back to neal.
patrick talks about how important it was for this album to be a single producer album; with mania they had so many different producers and he wanted to get back to just being in a routine with the same person. andy: it's the difference between microwaving and actually cooking. patrick: yeah, i agree with that! andy, jokingly: thanks, i'm gonna leave.
patrick calls what a time to be alive his baby. says every time he played it for someone they would say "really?" pete: patrick was really determined to get this song on the record. i felt like gamora like "is it done? what did it cost you?" pete and patrick in unison: everything [laughter]
patrick says he and pete struck a bargain (pete: i don't remember this). patrick didn't want so good right now to be on the record (he wasn't going to name the song but pete told him to go for it) but pete was really advocating for it. patrick said that if pete let him have what a time to be alive he would green light so good right now.
pete talks about how art only really becomes art when it connects with its audience which is part of why they wanted to do those small shows and host listening parties, to see how people reacted
the host asks how their relationship with fame has changed; pete says they had a year or two where they were super famous "and it was not a great life;" talks about how he looks at kpop groups and boy bands and thinks "god bless that it wasn't that long for us." he says he made a point to rearrange his life to be less famous and prioritize his family and the band. also pete makes a star wars reference and patrick does a yoda impression 😭
the hour wraps up with pete asking the host if he still wants a video for his son and they do a quick video for him 🥺

omgg im so obsessed with your jackass oc’s. i dont have a specific headcanon request but could you write more about a main cast girl?
yesssss yes !! & thank u sm that means the world <3 i have many more ideas and am gonna post actual headcanons and stuff but for now take this very random and very specific shit
her nickname is pissbaby. i have said it before but i must say it again so everyone is aware. she got it growing up and tbh there isn’t a real reason for it other than the fact that she has pissed herself a few times
went to the met gala with knox (was def invited before he was tho)
braids pontius’ hair a lot. does his hair in general. she’s good with hair styling nd even cuts her own
was the one to receive the off road tattoo
is always paired with knox (and tremaine sometimes) for press shit
has a lot of modeling/movie offers but tbh she just wants to skate and do stunts and travel and hang out with her guys
ik i said she cant cook but i changed my mind. cooking is lowkey her love language. she’s a vegetarian but doesn’t mind cooking meat if someone wants it. a long day filming? invites everyone over and cooks for them.
doesnt cook for herself tho. the queen of struggle meals. buys a lot of cereal
also always let’s ppl crash at her place. pontius is there a lot cuz the whole living in his van situation. he and steve were in her (iconic) cribz ep
present for most of the wildboyz trips even if she didn’t appear in the episode. she loves animals and traveling and learning about other cultures so it was like heaven for her
CRAZY stupid .. like, almost as bad as knoxville. she somehow was able to get in the bullpen and it scared the shit out of everyone (especially steve o)
honestly she doesn’t like fucking with animals and doesn’t wanna do anything to hurt them. she feels bad for certain things they do and regrets stressing them out
and she can be really sweet, but with animals? she is practically a different person. she turns into such a softie
has a few doggies. all rescues and with disabilities because she gets sad when people don’t want them
probably closest to the wildboyz, especially pontius. but knox too, and dunn <3
super fond of preston too. he’s so sweet and she can’t help but adore him
ppl swear either chris or pj is her soulmate (myself included nd i cant decide who pls help me)
always down for skate sessions
is sponsored by powell peralta (and is kinda at war with bam because he thinks his element sponsorship is better)
very fashionable. an it girl. (again, i picture her as devon aoki)
super scrappy and will fight a grown man
she knows how to fall because she’s a skater but she also has gotten some GNARLY injuries. usually to her head. always has bruises
knows first aid and she isn’t a medic obv but she has been SUPER helpful in certain situations
literally unable to drive, and yet, she drove for part of the gumball rally .. she managed to genuinely scare the guys. she doesn’t have her license for a reason.
one of those ppl who genuinely does not need deodorant but unfortunately the smell of jackass clings to her
has a lot of girl friends. she is a girl supremacist. we don’t blame her.
she can be really mean sometimes but most of it is on accident. she just doesn’t have a filter. the guys don’t really care tho, she fits in
ska music enthusiast. and a deadhead
so she doesn’t puke and doesn’t get grossed out HOWEVER she refuses to take part in that yucky shit. hell no. that’s what crosses the line.
once the guys collected a cup of their mixed sweat and poured it on her and she has never been so mad. like, she gets mad, she has a temper, but she lost her shit in a way that she never has before. made them turn off the camera. knoxville was the one to pour it—no one else was brave enough. tremaine was even on the fence about it. she ended up breaking knox’s nose. he was a good sport about it. they didn’t fuck with her in that way ever again
she can be kinda mean but it’s usually on accident cuz she has no filter. but for the most part the guys don’t give a fuck and it’s funny
interviewers and paps can be really really rude and sexist and the guys can’t help but get pissed and say stuff because they love her. BUT they also know that no one is better at defending her than she is. don’t fuck with her. ever. she will practically end someone’s career. she does not give a shit

My posts
I chimed in on a very helpful post about polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), specifically on treatment side effects. Apparently our collected knowledge is more than most people are getting told by their own doctors.
A post about Neneh Cherry's "Move with Me" (with a sidebar about the '80s hit "Buffalo Stance"), a song I listen to when I feel scattered.
The part where I say "He's six" is the entire reason I wrote about Hozier’s "Eat Your Young." I still wasn’t sure I wanted to post it, and then I saw an article titled "Maui Needs Speculators" and I went, yeah, okay, here we go.
I need to write things that aren't posts about music but it's hot and I can't think. The only thing cold around here is in my nose and this is Unideal.
Reblogs of interest
I didn't reblog the Trump mugshot because I knew everyone would see it anyway, and honestly, I don't want his face on my blog anymore than it has to be, although his attempt at looking badass was hilarious.
("do u want to see the most anyone has ever considered fleein to russia")
I don't know what the fuck Tumblr thinks it's doing with icons but I wish it would fucking stop.
A NEW KILLERS SONG 2023 why have you been so good to me
There were several interesting posts about Gaeilge, indigenous languages in the US, and an Irish-Choctaw connection re: the new Hozier song "Butchered Tongue."
("Suffer my carefree bops, planet earth")
Marie Curie's name was actually Maria Skłodowska-Curie (Skwo-dov-ska) and her Polish identity was deeply important to her, which I did not know and am glad to learn
SILPHIUM IS NO LONGER EXTINCT
"Thoughts on one of the hardest things: banishing the imagined bad faith reader from your writing process"
"1k words without inspiration: i will do it. i will take the ring to mordor"
POV: It is 1992 and you are Selina Kyle, which I probably shouldn't have left in the tags
Video
I had a number of fun reblogs under #animal sounds this week
We invented a new game called “protect the asset”
Dances to pull out at parties
The sacred texts
This Gru meme about Orpheus and Eurydice
Personal tag of the week
Let's go with #color, where I tag anything, artwork or not, that catches my eye

The short(er) summary of that particular squick is that I can sometimes get touchy about stuff that handles the implications of events that, in-universe, are not negotiated and not consensual as if they are negotiated and consensual — this can be relatively trivial when it’s, I don’t know, when you’re in a horror movie fandom where the villain straps a big beefy man to a chair against his will and puts a Saw trap on him and everyone’s like “wow that big beefy man loves getting strapped to chairs lmao” but it can squick me in other cases where people bypass entirely what is being represented in-universe (a nonconsensual act of violence, often sexual violence, often a type of violence that is societally devalued in a way that strapping someone into a Saw trap isn’t) in favor of what would be happening analogously in the parallel universe where what’s depicted is consensual and mutually desired. Basically discussing the Kinky S&M Porn Logic version of something to the exclusion of what is diegetically being experienced in-universe. This can get silly too when the extratextual cues that tell you how a story’s meant to be read are in conflict with that (if I’m playing a silly porno-fantasy RPG full of thinly veiled pretexts for low stakes monsterfucking versus if I’m reading a pretty serious horror novel where sexual violation by monsters is given a realistic weight — and there are people for whom any kind of monster sex is inherently silly enough to feel out of place in a non-porn-logic setting) but as a person whose tastes usually lean toward the Grim & Sad I can get tripped up when it feels like an event is being handled incongruously lightly relative to its context without an acknowledgement of there being a disconnect. This is all really incoherent and I have to go to the dentist now but I’m just simmering in my thoughts.

awful lot of cooking content from me, who hates cooking but finds the evenings jittery and boring
listening
Doorbell by Sterling Press, off the spotify weekly recced playlist. i don't know that i like this song. i don't know that it's particularly good. goddamn if it isn't catchy. alt britpop, they hate being compared to blur but mmmm. you do hear it. notes of ska as well. a song to blast in your car when your spring break plans fell through and you're driving to the good target two towns away from your hometown.
i don't think this music video could have existed pre-pandemic-- idk doorbell cams were that ubiquitous or well known, despite heavy advertising from nest.
youtube
from an interview:
Speaking about the new release, they said, “We wrote the song in our mates garage using drum samples off YouTube. We spent all night writing it then in the early hours of the morning drove to Maccies to have breakfast and had it on repeat the whole time. We all fell in love with it straight away. These lyrics speak to the importance of authenticity and sincerity in your actions. In a world where appearances and pretences can be misleading, it's a reminder to be true to yourself and to avoid trying to impress others for the sake of it. “I feel like its an experience we all share. We all know someone who goes off to uni or gets a new job and you bump into them on the street and they act as if they have no idea who you are. I guess this song is reflection of our frustrations towards those people.”
they have what i would consider an unusual amount of hype and presence for a band that has exactly three songs out, but they've all been making music together and separately since well before the pandemic so maybe they've just finally broken out? i can't figure out who these kids are related to. i don't think it's a full on industry plant but i do think someone's dad has some money.
a friend once said she hated how eighties songs faded out like a printer running out of ink, and i do not particularly care for how 2020s songs end with the entire band vanishing underwater.
this song is truly not that deep but it is thoroughly stuck in my goddamn head.
listening: special podcast edition
i am not looking for solutions. do not say solutions at me. i am taking through a brain thing and having a weird workflow and brain problem. i have tried other apps with browser support and do not like them, and i cannot have my personal apple id tied to my work computer bc i have and frequently use a work apple id.
i have been listening to podcasts through Spotify ever since mmm november ‘20. it has not been a good experience but juggling the Apple Podcasts app through my phone (distraction minefield) and whatever im listening to or working on with the work computer is a nightmare. ethics of spotify aside, it is a tremendously successful all in one listening platform. i do not have the brainspace to manage my own music library, and support my favorite artists in other ways.
i am not looking for solutions. do not say solutions at me.
however, if you listen to enough podcast episodes, spotify does not seem to believe you when you tell it to unfollow a podcast. it just keeps letting you know hey this has a new episode. this got me stuck on a loop where i was listening to more and more episodes of two very prolific conspiracy theory debunking podcasts to the exclusion of almost everything else. this was not very good for my mental health.
i am not looking for solutions. do not say solutions at me.
despite the real annoyance of finagling a very distracting phone and the work laptop, i have gone back to Apple Podcasts and (after weeding out a variety of podcasts for a variety of reasons) started listening to friends at the table again. not sure why i stopped but i felt a weird amount of guilt around restarting?? the tablefriends neither know nor care. i have finally finished road to palisade and am excited but nervous about starting palisade proper

reading
a local religious thrift store has absolutely rancid vibes but does regularly have 6/$1 book sales. there were a couple older trade paperback comics the last time: the first three volumes of ULTIMATE XMEN and a radom What If? superman.
Tumblr media
my trouble with the xmen, and i have to read something from it once every two years to remind myself, is that magneto is right. they will never be able to assimilate into white picket fence middle america, or even among the liberal coastal elites or whatever the term du jour was in 1999. the box will always be smaller and you will never be perfect enough. i did not enjoy this enough to continue bc of this fundamental disagreement with most xmen comics.
also it looks like this. magneto’s lair has an arch in the shape of the arch on the front of his helmet and that was pretty baller, but there’s a real. what was they gimmick blog about all the comic book women in contorted spine-breaking poses? it’s like that a lot. WHAT is ororo’s body doing there

watching
youtube
hey. what the fuck do you mean tomato sauce is that easy. i dislike tomato sauce and almost exclusively eat jar upon jar of aldi brand pesto. im not allergic bc tomatoes aren't tingly but it's just sort of Nothing all the time. what do you mean it can be good???
i don't actually remember why i'm subscribed to mr internet shaquille. perhaps, like so many other food things, it's kali's fault.

playing
g/enshinposting.
pulled this horrid little brat. very pleased with myself.
Tumblr media
i do not. love. her story quest. it falls into the childrens' media trap of Sometimes It's Okay For Other People To Stomp All Over Your Boundaries If It's For The Good Of The Group! or perhaps this is just a thing i'm particularly twitchy about. either way, annoyed that other characters of this importance have gotten some deeply moving writing and so far furina has...not gotten that.
the next character i am excited about is lolita taylor swift, or geo-aligned lady with big fuckoff sword. from some early maybe-leaks i think she would pair beautifully with my playstyle and my pirate lady with big sword. my playstyle is mostly brute force damage. i hit things as hard as i can until they fall over and i've played the entire game (with some exceptions that required actual thinking about elemental reactions) that way. it pleases me.
Tumblr media
re: the conclusion of the annapausis sidequest, genshin does a really good job of teasing out "ok in a world with actual gods, what does spirituality look like/what are the differing views on fate/how do people make sense of an afterlife". mostly this is gnosticism. and sometimes it's a real life occultist secret society (reskinned Rosicrucianism). fascinating writing choices.

making
turkey cottage pie with scalloped potatoes, bc i had a five-pound bag of russets that were starting to sprout. im just going to yoink this pic i posted earlier bc it is now half gone and in tupperware form
Tumblr media
this is the first time ive ever cooked in a dutch oven and im in love. i thrifted this for $20 some weeks ago but bc the lid has some chips and rust i haven't used it. which is silly, bc the body of the oven is fine. de-rusting and seasoning the lid will wait for a day when i actually need it bc for now we can get by with doubled-over sheet of aluminum foil.
used this recipe: only had a pound of ground turkey and liberally stretched it with potatoes (i think about three and a half pounds out of five) and three pounds out of a cheap frozen veggie mix bag. did not include mushrooms bc i did not like them. threw in some bay leaves bc i have a giant bag of them, i think i almost doubled the wine bc i doubled the recipe, but i do not think i remembered to double the beef stock. i also shook in a liberal amount of italian seasoning bc i have a cheap jar from aldi i want to use up.
the final product was somewhat soupy. i anticipated that slicing the potatoes was going to be the longest part (mostly true, i had to take breaks) and kept them in a big bowl of cold water to stop them browning while i chopped and after i blanched them. i also could have reduced the filling down some more but i am not a patient woman.
not as intended but still yummy, which was a lovely surprise bc usually when i fuck recipes up i fuck them up But Good. plus new technique (dutch oven). if i make this again (likely) i will do instant potatoes on top bc this was a fuck of a lot of chopping for one recipe. thinking about getting one of those stupid little hand smash veggie choppers bc a full food processor is extremely out of budget.

Message from the EZLN regarding recent gossip and rumours. Full text below:
P.S. THAT WARNS. – We were already going to tell you what this whole thing is about, but reading, seeing and listening to the string of atrocities that the «specialists» in everything and knowledgeable in nothing say and write (about supposed withdrawals, dismantlements, advances of organized crime and «returns to the past” – Coletos had to be the majority -), we decided rather to let them continue burping.
With their deep analysis and well-founded research, the zapatologists state: “an example of the Zapatista defeat is the loss of indigenous identity: young indigenous people already wear cowboy boots, instead of walking barefoot or in huaraches. And they get ready to flirt, new pants and shirt – or ironed! -, instead of wearing blanket pants and buying their wives according to indigenous uses and customs. And they ride motorcycles, instead of carrying their women coletas bosses on their backs. The only thing left is for young indigenous women to wear pants or, what a horror!, play soccer and drive vehicles, instead of serving the coleta ladies. They even dare to dance cumbias and ska instead of Bolonchon, and sing rap and hiphop instead of psalms and odes to the landowners. And, as another sign of the loss of their indigenous identity, they even pretend the absurdity of being subcommanders, commanders, and women commanders! And pretend to govern themselves. And they don’t ask permission to be however they want to be. And they travel and get to know other lands. And they work and earn their pay without a ‘tienda de raya’. And they do not have them in concentration camps, like in Gaza, so that they do not pick up “Sinaloa” ideas, that is, foreign ones – because the mayo-yoreme in Sinaloa, are all about narcocorridos, my man –. Because of Zapatismo, we anthropologists will no longer have any jobs. What a shame. And all because they did not follow the revolutionary vanguard of the proletariat or MORENA, same thing. A serious mistake of Zapatismo not to obey us. Because today, the indigenous people no longer look down when you bump into them. They look at you with irreverence, with defiance, with rage, as if we were the intruders and not them, as if we were the criminals and not them. Before, only the Zapatistas did that, now any ‘Chamulita’ stands up to you. And, as Marxism-Leninism-Stalinism-Maoism-Trotskyism-all-isms say, any indigenous person who is not like the anthropology manual says is a narco.”
We know for sure that, later, when the full meaning of this stage is known, they will have the minimum of honesty to say and publish: “We do not have the slightest idea of what they did, what they do or what they will do. The best thing would have been to ask the Zapatistas and not the anti-Zapatistas.” Or are they not honest?
Tell those “journalists” that it is always better, although more uncomfortable and not profitable, to interview the actors, not the spectators, ‘villa melones’ and lazy paramilitaries. Investigative journalism is a professional job that often requires risks and discomfort. But, don’t worry, we understand that everyone looks for a living the best way they can.
So, as a greeting to the “zapatologists”, we continue with these P.S. made with love:
P.S. OF THE CAPTAINTY OF PUERTO DE MONTAÑA. – We had prepared a series of clever phrases to make fun of the political class as a whole (government and opposition), but now we think that there is no point, since each flock has its shepherd or each shepherd has its flock. Or does someone naively believe that the matter is between two shepherdesses?
Our silence in these years was not, nor is, a sign of respect or endorsement of anything, but rather that we strive to see further and seek what everyone, men, women and ‘otroas’, is looking for: a way out of the nightmare. While you learn, from subsequent writings, what we have been doing, perhaps you will understand that our attention has been elsewhere.
But we understand that more than one suffers from what we Zapatistas call a “theoretical torticollis” which is caused by looking up, too much, and affects good judgment, common sense, decency and honesty – in addition to being addictive and creating chronic dependency. We understand the limitations of your horizons of analysis. One thing is the desk, the academy, the journalistic column, the commissioned report, the government position, the revolutionary coffee gossip or social networks, and another thing is reality.
The latter not only does not pay, but it also charges very expensively. Shakira has already said it: ‘la realidad factura’ (reality costs), and it does not include VAT. Sorry.
We will not make firewood out of the fallen trees up there. Reality, that implacable fool, will do its thing and the last splinters will be those that organized crime takes from the “cobro de piso” in the proposals of each of them.
Some masturbate with the ‘mañanera’ (morning presidential conference). Others with destruction, deaths, murders, rapes, disappearances, hunger, war, diseases, pain and sorrow. None of them have a viable and serious political proposal, they just entertain… until they don’t anymore.
And, since we are talking about autoeroticism: given the choice between Bertha and Claudia, well, Wendy.
-*-
Okay, cheers and now what am I going to do with my costume to dance corridos tumbados? “Compa, que le parece esa gorra?”… What? That’s not the way it goes? Don’t I tell you? It is the loss of indigenous identity. I hope anthropologists arrive soon to save us.
From the mountains of the mexican southeast.
The Captain
(Looking very handsome with his cowboy hat, not for bragging. Ajúa my people!)
Mexico 40, 30, 20, 10 years after
P.S. «CONTEXTUAL». – Televisa being Televisa and anthropologists being anthropologists:

💚: What does everyone else get wrong about your favorite character?
My favorite boy is Tom, and like, idk I know he loves Smirnoff and he was drunk for Space Face, but I still feel some people just water him down to "the drunk one" when alcohol isn't his only interest
Like he's shown an interest in writing and filming like in Movie Makers, he's a fan of fishing like in The End and the flashback in Fun Dead, not gonna mention his bass playing since that's the other thing he's mainly drawn/written doing
idk he's more than just "drunk guy", he's a friend, a ska lover, an artist; he's complex, he's multifaceted, he loves his mom, he has a running gag, he just has so much going for him, but I hardly see his deeper sides be touched on in fan work
I'm not saying it's wrong to depict him a certain way or doing certain things or anything like that, it's just something I've noticed that more could be done with
