“In the mind of the political cucks, the United States, is a rentable hegemon for foreign cultures to migrate to and use to influence events in their homelands. Groups may band together, forming influential political alliances that overshadow the interests of the nation's founders', and even their descendants. This approach represents a skewed perspective, favoring self-interest over communal legacy and courage.”

This quoted that I came up with portrays a perspective where the United States is seen as a power that individuals and collectives from other nations can move to and then use as a base to impact their countries of origin. This viewpoint is technically called diaspora politics, but also suggests that as these groups form and gain influence, they might overshadow the intents and visions of the nation's founders and their descendants. The underlying concern here is that these actions could be driven by self-interest rather than a dedication to the shared values and collective bravery that are part of America's heritage.

In simpler terms, this take suggests that when people come to America and focus on their own goals, especially those tied to where they came from, they might unintentionally shift the focus away from the common good. It's as if everyone is playing a game of tug-of-war, pulling in directions that benefit their personal agendas. As a result, the fabric of what the U.S. stands for could start to fray. The big idea of sticking together and looking out for each other gets lost if we're all too busy competing for our own interests. This product is then reduced by the sum of positive social factors such as social cohesion ( SC ), cultural heritage ( CH ), trust in institutions ( TI ), the availability of public goods ( PG ), and the global reputation ( GR ). The result is the net social force which could either be positive or negative, indicating either a stabilizing or destabilizing effect on society.

Why Did I Use?

In the metaphorical equation provided, the number one is used in the context of an inverse relationship. It's situated in the denominator alongside the term 'Communal Legacy and Courage' (CLC) to indicate that as CLC increases, its effect on the social force, denoted as F_s, becomes inversely smaller. Political Polarization (PP), describes the growing divide in political beliefs. Self-interest here amplifies the us-versus-them mentality, making it harder to find common ground.

Social Cohesion (SC), is the glue that holds society together. It's the community spirit that combats the divisive effects of self-interest and the various challenges we face.

Cultural Heritage (CH)

Cultural Heritage (CH), represents our shared history and traditions. It's a stabilizing force, reminding us of our collective identity and the stories that unite us.

Trust in Institutions (TI)

Trust in Institutions (TI), is about our faith in the systems and structures that govern us. When we trust that these institutions work for our benefit, it helps to counterbalance the more disruptive forces in society.

Availability of Public Goods (PG)

The Availability of Public Goods, (PG) is about having access to resources and services that benefit everyone. Good schools, clean water, and safe roads are examples. When these are available, they help smooth out societal wrinkles caused by self-interest.

Global Reputation (GR)

Global Reputation (GR), reflects how the rest of the world sees us. A strong reputation can lead to international support and opportunities, which in turn can mitigate some of the internal pressures we face.

The masterclass on Religious Heritage (7th-8th March 2024) explored these challenges and opportunities in transforming religious buildings during secular shifts within our societies. Experts discussed the dominant role of religious heritage in urban contexts and its modern relevance in towering above the main cityfabric.

Central themes included changes in religious buildings' societal role as our identities become more liquid with an importance of vulnerability. Churches are urged to create spaces for human connection beyond rituals, aligning with core faith principles and take up their function of care for humanity once more. The Nuance of Social Cohesion

I’ve always wanted to explore Sydney as part of a blog called Explore small worlds but as I was writing my last piece in which I discussed social cohesion and it did give me serious (traumatic) flashbacks to belonging for HSC.

The previous piece talks about the reality of macro social cohesion, something that is evident in the micro scale. After a spike of social cohesion over the period of the pandemic, rates of social cohesion has dropped below 2019 levels. I think that it doesn’t consider the micro experiences that make up the wider macro trend. Although that piece identified that economics.

Sydney has always existed on some version of segregation, being a colonial outpost first and then nexus of that colonial empire and finally resting in it’s current state as the global city rife with the stashing of expensive properties of foreign nationals. A friend quipped that Sydney isn’t a fruit salad but rather it is is fruit bowl. And that rang true. Telling somebody where you live is built in with assumptions about your place. And often describing unfamiliar places is accompanied with quips like “that’s where x lives”. And the discussion that Melina Marchetta makes in Looking for Alibrandi where people live in Sydney and they never interact.

I’ve come from a small world and its one that I didn’t fit in. My beliefs eventually made me more different although it was ongoing trend. The straw that broke the camel’s back was the treatment of women in that place. And although I know many strong women, they were not acknowledged in leadership and that showed me their patriarchal underpinnings. Although some were able to square the circle of this I was not able to. This world was stifling small, although I acknowledge very comfortable for others.

When I left I was so keen to find new bigger worlds, and in the seven years that I have left this world I have been reminded that although this is small and I didn’t fit in, there are many small worlds that exist in similar ways. I’ve come to understand that the world is small and Sydney is even smaller as I find mutuals in the most disparate of places. I’ve been given a unique perspective as someone who has explored more a than few small worlds, and I have concluded that the problems that have been identified as problems of small religious communities are found in many different small communities. And similar processes about effectively shielding those with serious concerns.

There is a underlying fetishism that with the ongoing crisis, small communities are the way that we support our out of these. It’s one that I still believe with caveats. Although I know that in times of crisis there is increased social cohesion as reflected in the increase over lock downs, when the immediate crisis goes away like it has now, then we are left without similar levels. The problem is that the affects of climate change are evident but they aren’t being felt in the small communities that most Sydney-siders reside in. Although with the outer rim of Sydney being more prone to bush fires there is less necessity overall.

The segregation in Sydney is now pushing its residents to be pushed out, and this dispersal of real options for younger people is fueling their lack of social cohesion. The reality of needing any kind of intergenerational wealth is becoming more and more relevant. And those who set policy controls are those who have benefited from stability and security in housing and work in a way that we can only aspire to.

I think that sitting on the marginal space, although now I am an adult I now have a solid network and community. For people like me who have this marginal experience I think that there is implicit exclusion that doesn’t allow grace or any kind of space for difference. Although some of those who reside in those small worlds, are not terrible people but the cultures that are preserved in those small worlds are ones that need to retreat harder in the face of insecurity and instability. Although an understandable position, its one that doesn’t seek difference and diversity of though to expand the resonance chamber. Often the only time that people interact with people with people who are different would be in a fleeting way and when it goes negative, it is final. Although, my generation has been traditionally understood to popularise the concept of “if it doesn’t serve you, leave it”. And that kind of attitude doesn’t sit in the discomfort, despite the understandable concerns that it responds to. There is a space in the middle that establishes good boundaries and expects them to be firm but also is concerned with developing stronger cohesion by allowing a greater communal experience.

Exciting news in the world of migration and mental health research! Our latest manuscript, "Factors Contributing to the Mental Wellbeing of Afghan Migrants in Iran During the COVID-19" has been published in the Journal of Migration and Health (Elsevier, Science Direct), now available online: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jmh.2024.100211 (10 January 2024, Article 100211).

Together in the Storm: Community Responses to Climate Change Disasters

Hurricane Sandy hit New York and New Jersey in October of 2012, devastating many communities. Though these areas were prone to Northeastern storms, Sandy exceeded expectations in the worst possible way, becoming at the time the second most costly US hurricane after Katrina. John Spodofora, Mayor of Stafford Township, New Jersey, said, “I don’t think anyone thought what happened would happen, and we were devastated. Even though we had a plan, the plan couldn’t meet the horrors of that storm.”

In the face of such devastation, it was up to communities to come together and help one another. However, community camaraderie in such situations is often not as simple as believed. According to the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), communities who are already connected are the most likely to not only survive a disaster, but also rebuild their community the most quickly and completely. Larger organizations like LISC or the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) rely on communities to assist in their aid efforts. As LISC member Susan Fitter Harris reflects on Hurricane Sandy, she writes:

"When residents are connected to one another, they look out for one another. They know where the senior citizens live, the single moms with small children, the neighbors with physical challenges. They can be invaluable in helping first responders know where to look and for whom, and in making sure that emergency relief resources get to those who need them."

Community connectedness is particularly valuable for low-income groups who may not have the resources to come back from a disaster on their own. When studying low-income neighborhoods in Chicago, researchers from the Center for American Progress found that “socially cohesive communities in which people are engaged in social or civic events enjoyed increased resilience against extreme weather events.”

Of course, we also hear stories of “spontaneous volunteers” who come out of the woodwork to help those they have never met - those who still had power during Hurricane Sandy and shared charging stations outside their homes; the O’Neill sisters who created community relief efforts despite the government telling them to pack up and go home. It seems that people will come together in times of trouble regardless, but perhaps creating tighter bonds between our neighbors can aid in this process.
