Are you looking to click with a new game and want something genuinely different?

I am always hunting for new titles to reinvigorate that click I feel with video games. Not all video games will click but when they do they can be something truly special. I wanted to go over some of my favorite games I’ve played in recent years that are available on current gen consoles. I’m not covering anyone upcoming, these are titles you can pick up today. Cheaply at that. Several of which are on sale on Steam right now as of writing this.

So. Enough chit chat. Lets’s start with an easy one:

Paradise Killer:

PC Switch PS4/PS5 Xbox

I just finished this one and am in the middle of writing my review on it. Painfully stylish with a killer vaporwave soundtrack this game oozes aesthetic. Kaizen Game Works understood the hauntology assignment and took it to the MAX. You are an investigator trying to solve an immortal god-like council’s murder in a dystopian society. You’ve returned to this gorgeous open world parasite paradise from your exile of 3 million days (about 8219 years)! If you’ve played Outer Wilds this is among that same vein. (And I will caution you, while not hard, the game relies on you wanting to just explore. It will provide hints but it won’t hold your hand.)

This is an Ace Attorney-esqe collectathon mixed with open world and exploration. There is no combat. Both the writing and the world are spectacular. Don’t deny yourself something this wonderful, because it is.

This has quickly risen among my gaming ranks as a favorite and it hits to being as close of a favorite as my number 2 suggestion…

Outer Wilds:

PC Switch PS4/PS5 Xbox

This is perhaps one of my favorite games of all time. I wanted to talk about this second because Outer Wilds has received more of the notoriety it deserves in recent times and I wanted PK to get the main spotlight. Don’t get it twisted though If it wasn’t for UpIsNotJump’s video (<— Spoilers) I would have never realized what I was missing. And I still think a lot of people don’t understand what they’re missing too. It is an absolute masterpiece. And seeing it getting released physically again is a god send. I want people to play this game. (And it’s DLC Echoes of The Eye)

No combat. You are a scientist exploring your local solar system in your spaceship in an open “universe” instead of an open world. The sun explodes every 22 minutes which sends your memories back in time. Again, I will caution you that the game relies on you wanting to explore. It will not direct you.

Eastward:

PC Switch Xbox

Too much exploring. Let’s reel it back with Eastward. A Zelda-like where you control an older man and a little girl with psychic powers in a post apocalyptic world. If you’re looking for those fun pixel games that pack that quirky feel this is it. A bit existential, a great sense of humor, and fantastic writing are all part of the Eastward package. (You startin’ to see a theme here? Ha ha)

All while boasting a seriously killer pixel soundtrack. The original Iron Carbine trailer for the Nintendo Direct had an immediate impact on me as a gamer. I knew this was a game I would fall in love with. Sometimes you just know when something is special. This game is beautifully pixelated and packed with lovingly crafted content. Puzzles are the right amount of challenging and there is so much fun side stuff to do. Including a Dragon Quest-esqe game inside the game! It also received DLC via Eastward Octopia! Which I also love.

Moon: A Remix RPG

PC Switch PS4/PS5

I do play games with combat. I swear. Several of these games just don’t have it! (Ha!) This will perhaps be the hardest game to sell to you on this list. I have a soft spot for quirky games like this, but know that this was a PS1 Japanese exclusive game in the 90s. And it sure acts like it. Slow to start, weak tutorial, and doesn’t provide a ton of direction. This game was ported into English for the first time in 2020 and I love it. It is a trial and error experience though.

This cult classic is one of the games that inspired Undertale and when you play it becomes wildly apparent. I dare say it reminds me more of Undertale than its other main inspiration Earthbound. You are a little boy that’s been fallen into his video game and you have to save the souls of monsters the hero has killed using love. (Sound familiar?)

Light hearted and weird this game also has a great sense of humor as it pokes at classic RPG tropes. And that slow intro comes into play providing a unique perspective as you journey through the game befriending people. It won’t be for everyone, I would research this one before sinking the… $18.99 on the purchase. But I think it is worth experiencing if you love Undertale.

I think I’ve yakked enough. If folks like the post I’ll follow up with a part two with a little more genre variety! I wanted to the first post to include my top favorites. So. I hope there’s something in there that invigorates you the way these games did for me.

Aw, I missed that post. Thanks for linking it! So instead of asking for heliolisk line review, how about some heliolisk line headcanons?

I headcanon that they were typically seen as a prey animal by other creatures from the desert where they evolved, where there are many ground types, and relied on their ability to vanish into sandstorms (sand veil) to escape danger. They'd sneakily follow travelling/ migrating water types until those found prey, then use their type advantage to knock them out and kleptoparasite off them. Some of them got too good at following water types and made it out of the desert, where they dropped being prey animals and sort of became extremely successful in the water (dry skin + surf). Unfortunately, they became so reliant on water types and wet environments they can never return to the desert.

The rarest of the three breeds (hidden ability solar power) came to be when the water dwelling helioptiles made an effort to return to the desert, and overcame their dependence on water, instead harnessing the damage the sun could bring to them to generate even more power.

In the wild, desert dwelling helioptiles deliberately hold off evolving until they learn volt switch so they can attack and retreat with a single move

Has to generate electricity rather than creating it the way most electric-types do, hence it still being part normal-type. It may lose the typing in the future, given enough time.

They flare out their frills when sunbathing, but also when fighting over things like territory or mates.

They feed primarily on insect Pokemon, especially small electric-types like Joltik. Scatterbug are another common dietary staple for them.

The line hibernates when there's no sunlight, such as during rain.

Helioptile are popular pets among reptile Pokemon enthusiasts. They are even tempered and can sustain themselves purely through sunlight.

Basking heat lamps can be used by trainers if there's no sunlight for a long period of time. If these are used, they should also be given extra vitamin D pills, as they've evolved to use a large amount of it.

Helioptile and Heliolisk are sometimes used to predict the weather; if they start gathering on ledges and high-up places, it means there's going to be a long stretch of sunny days ahead.

Virtuoso bassists Christian McBride and Edgar Meyer offer a series of playful and artfully delivered duets on 2024's But Who's Gonna Play the Melody? While both McBride and Meyer are acclaimed in their own right and largely considered two of the best, if not the best bassists of their generation, they come to improvisational music from slightly different perspectives. A jazz star from a young age, McBride is steeped in the acoustic post-bop, R&B, and funk traditions with a strong classical technique underpinning his work. Conversely, Meyer, who teaches at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, is largely known for playing classical and progressive bluegrass music with a strong harmonic and improvisational jazz sensibility informing his work. They do, however, share a common connection: both were mentored by legendary jazz bassist Ray Brown. It was Brown who first introduced the two prior to his passing in 2002, just a few years before they first shared a concert stage at a 2007 performance in Colorado as part of the non-profit Jazz Aspen Snowmass. Recorded at Ingram Hall at Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music, But Who's Gonna Play the Melody? finds them building upon that initial performance, tackling a mix of originals and covers. There's a warm camaraderie, balanced with just a hint of wry competition at play in these duets. There's also a deep appreciation of the blues throughout the album, as on the opening Meyer original "Green Slime," where McBride lays down a chunky, funk-like groove over which Meyer dances with zippy bowed asides before they switch roles. From there, they dive into the twangy "Barnyard Disturbance," a bluegrass-inflected number in which they trade soulful, vocal-sounding lines. Elsewhere, they offer engaging readings of standards, including the Miles Davis-associated modal jazz classic "Solar" and the ballad "Days of Wine and Roses." Interestingly, they also take turns playing piano on several tunes, as on "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" where Meyer offers a spare accompaniment to McBride's lyrical melody. Similarly, McBride takes to the keys for his chamber ballad "Lullaby for a Ladybug," spotlighting Meyer's languorous bowed technique. Certainly, the choice to accompany each other on piano works to highlight their distinctive bass styles. Thankfully, although they both play with big, woody tones, it's never too hard to tell them apart. Despite the wry humor implied by the album title, McBride and Meyer infuse every note of But Who's Gonna Play the Melody? with their own distinctive style, as if they were singing through their strings.

toy story 2 and monster's inc.

I swear I don't mean to do 2 at once, I'm watching these semi-daily but I can only review when I have energy, okay break and go

Toy Story 2

Do you ever watch a movie, and find that secretly, scenes from the whole movie are burned into your retinas and are drawn on your eyelids, this was my latest experience watching toy story 2. Toy story 2 is about an inversion on the original, woody is in a secondary location and it's up to the boys to bring him home while he has cowboy doll adventures with jesse and the horse and that other guy. Definitely a more novel setup than "what if a kid was evil" but it leaves a lot of the movie on the shoulders of the boys, who're fun but i would hesitate to say any of them "contribute", honestly mvp of the rescue mission might go to fake buzz, who gets the vent open *and* fights that weird zurg that shows up. I know all it sounds like i've done is complain, but that's mainly because i dont have much else to say otherwise. Toy Story 2 is a natural feeling expansion on the original, talking about one or two things the movie does well would just be repeating "well they did this better than the original, and technology improved over time"

toy story 2 gets a 9/10, and the original gets retroactively bumped to an 8/10

memorable bits: the video game bit, when woody finds all his cool shit, "when she loved me" (honestly the buzz half of this movie is less than the woody half that's why all these scenes are woody's), the invention of asmr cleaning videos, star wars references fuckin everywhere, the entire last 30 minutes being stuck in my brain since childhood with it's weird soft lighting and like fun gray stuff

monster's inc.

Now this is a movie I can analyze. Monster's inc. is about how we need green energy fucking now, naturally it was released in 2002. Sully and Mike are working class factory men in the scare factory, a power plant but instead of torturing rocks they torture children by going into their rooms at night and scaring them. They do this with minimal safety equipment and with an understanding that touching a human child is explicitly dangerous. This becomes clearly false as they meet our third lead, a human child they call boo, shenanigans and hijinks ensue, they get boo back to the human world, get their coworker randall and boss mr. waterknot put in prison for human trafficking and they switch to green energy laughter. i find this movie far more interesting as a metaphor than as a movie to be critical about (it's another 8/10 if you want a score, i really like the score and the world but find it drags in the middle until the climax). So, their boss was secretly funding a more efficient, but far more unethical way of getting oil scream, instead of going with the even more efficient and powerful and infinite laughter, but it doesn't really seem like mr. waterknot even really knows about the laughter. Actually now that i think of it nobody knew there was an alternative until the end, so ig the boss wasn't the worst fictional capitalist i've ever seen, because at least he wasn't also suppressing the cure, he was just stupid. but who cares about his plan his shit is incidental randall is a class traitor! like straight up actually doesn't care about selling out human kids, and doesn't give a fuck about mike and sully getting banished for like 5 minutes, just so long as he gets a promotion he'll kill his lil peanut guy to get his way. it's like a really messy metaphor but it works as a compelling case for "but why not solar power tho?" y'know? like that one comic that's like "but what if we cleaned up the world for future generations for nothing" but like as a movie, why shouldn't we use green energy? even if it's nothing but better for the kids

memorable bits: uhhh the fuckin doors, that scene with mike and randall with the clock, the scene where they shave that guy, the sushi place (which blew up in the pre-9/11 cut), the fuckin monster offices in the back (need that in kh), "welcome to the himalayas", nemo in boo's room at the end, "i'd kidnap a thousand children before i'd let this company die" for some reason playing continuously in my head whenever i think of this movie, rozz the slug lady, celia, the ending tease,

“God, who packed this thing?” Mulder muttered into his helmet as he shifted the next case of weather balloons to the front. They were loaded in such a way that every time he pulled another one out, it made the next one more difficult to retrieve. It was normally a thing he would have kept to himself, but since they had deployed on their extended EVA, he and Scully had taken to just leaving their comms channel open all the time. Occasionally he could hear her talking to herself from the small lab in the back section of the Rover, a quirk he found charming and sweet.

“I know,” agreed Scully, responding to him through the hissing speaker of the comm. “The medical supplies they sent with us are not oldest to newest, as per protocol. Everything is in there, but I can tell just by looking at the lot numbers that they didn’t pack what was slotted to come.”

“Next time we go out on EVA, please make sure Powers is restored to full duty, will you?” he said, joking with her. “This substitute payload specialist shit is for the birds.”

He could sense her smile on the other end of the comm.

He turned to the horizon behind them, the vast vista, marred only by the tread marks from their tires. They were several weeks out from the HAB and well into the fan-shaped route that had been laid out to deploy the weather devices. It was relatively easy, mindless work; drive several hours, stop, pull out a weather balloon (which was more of a lightweight solar operated drone than what you might picture in your head), deploy, and move on. Scully had insisted on stopping along the way to collect soil and water samples, but they were still on schedule—and when one or both of them wasn’t out of the rover on mission, they were in the two seats up front, driving, listening to music, snacking, talking.

It was like being on a road trip with a new girlfriend, Mulder thought, with all the excitement of infatuation and adventure, knowing that when the sun went down, they would find each other in the dark. He’d never had so much sex in his life. In fact, he’d suggested more than once that Scully really ought to begin a study on the refractory period of a middle aged human male in low gravity, as there was something otherworldly—if she’d pardon the expression—about how often and intense their couplings were. She’d advised him that she was in fact recording statistics, but more informally, and in such a way that wouldn’t pass muster under peer review. He shook his head, smiling.

“Ready to deploy WBD-156,” he said into his comm-link.

“WBD-156, check,” came Scully’s officious-sounding response. “Location recorded, device pinging and responsive. You are go to deploy.”

Mulder switched on the device’s motor and gave its small solar panels one more hit with compressed air, then launched it up into Mars’ prevailing wind. “One-Five-Six deployed,” he reported, watching the little machine go shooting off into the salmon-colored sky.

“And that’s One-Five-Six logged with Base Base,” she said a moment later. “You’re done for the day, Mulder.”

“Copy.” Mulder secured the remaining weather balloons to the pallet of the trailer Rover 2 was pulling and made his way back along the side of the rover to the airlock.

The Rover was set up with its full complement of accessories for their journey. For short EVAs or for tooling around the mesas near the HAB, it was a single compartment with three wheels on each side, a small airlock that could only fit one astronaut at a time, and two captain’s chairs with full driving capability on either the starboard or port. Behind the ‘driver’s seats’ was a small galley, even smaller lavatory, and a collapsible Murphy-style table and benches with two beds on either side.

Decked out as it was now, it had—in addition to the open-air pallet trailer holding the weather balloons—a full second rigid section, linked to the driving compartment by an articulated pivoting joint enclosed by protective bellows. It looked rather remarkably like an articulated bus used in public transportation, only instead of more seating in the second compartment, it was fully outfitted with a traveling laboratory, small medical bay, and two more collapsible Murphy beds.

Mulder and Scully had taken to eating in the galley up front and sleeping in the beds in the rear when the sun went down. During the day, as they traversed their mission path, Mulder tended to drive while Scully rode shotgun or worked on samples in the lab. Perhaps they were falling into predictable gender roles, but neither seemed to mind.

Mulder approached the airlock and looked to the sun as he waited for the green light to enter. They probably had another hour or two of daylight left, and he hoped they could get back on the road, as it were, and use up the remaining daylight to knock a few more clicks off of their trek. They were making good time, but you never knew what could happen when out on EVA, and as they approached the apex of their journey—when they would be the absolute furthest from the safety and backup of the other Nerio crew members—Mulder got nervous.

In front of him, the light on the airlock turned green and he entered, pushing the button that initiated the pressurization. Like the one in the HAB, the rover’s smaller, one-man airlock had an automated vacuuming system in its floor that pulled the dust and other buildup off of the astronauts hardsuits. Though Mars had so far proven to be a totally sterile world, NASA would not risk any of the astronauts or colonists being infected with an alien microbe or bacteria should they ever pick one up on the sole of their boot, and so once you went through the airlock, a thirty second vacuuming process was required before you could pass into the rover or HAB.

Once the process was complete, the light kicked to clear and Mulder removed his helmet, stepping into the tiny ready-area of the HAB.

“Hey,” Scully said, stepping forward from where she’d been seated in the port side driver’s seat. She was wearing a gray jumpsuit that she’d taken her arms out of and tied around her waist, approaching him in a plain white tank top. The rovers were set to an automated heating system, pumping out more in the late afternoons in anticipation of the sun going down as a way to try to stay ahead of the frigidly cold temperatures of the Martian night. It was normally quite comfortable, but had a tendency to run a few degrees hotter than necessary this time of day.

“You want some help getting out of your suit?”

Mulder resisted the urge to make a sexual joke and merely threw her an appreciative smile. “Please.”

Despite the vacuuming process, the boots of their hardsuits were both beginning to take on a rusty stain that crept up the hard shell of the suit and approached the forest green stripes that looped around Mulder’s legs. The suits were also starting to give off a regolith-esque odor redolent of rotten eggs. Mars, it turned out, did not smell great.

“Might be time to Febreze the suits,” Scully said, unlocking the lower half of Mulder’s hardsuit from the top and gingerly raising it up so that he could step out of it without scraping his skin along the edges. NASA had sent along a liquid compound that combated the mephitic odor, but it could be cloying, especially in the cramped space of the rover.

“Oof,” Mulder said. “If you must. But let’s wait until after we stop for the night and we can retreat to the rear compartment.”

She slid several parts of his suit into the storage locker that housed them. “You want to keep going today?”

“If you don’t mind,” he said, glancing out toward the windshield of the rover. “Would love to get a few more miles behind us.

“Fine by me,” she said, giving him a smile. “I’ve got some things I can do in the lab if you want to drive.” With that she rubbed her hand up and down his arm once and made her way to the rear section lab.

Mulder pulled on the slippers he liked to wear in the rover and made his way to the starboard side driver’s seat.

“Oh,” called Scully from the back as he was running a systems check. “There was a system dump of correspondence about thirty minutes ago. I got a whole load of emails from home. Might be worth checking yours.”

“Will do,” Mulder called back, firing up the rover and putting it in gear, creeping forward until he got the engine up to full. He checked his nav screen, slightly adjusted his trajectory, and settled in for the drive.

The landscape in the area they were currently traveling was flat, a broad expanse of pale orange without many obstacles they’d need to navigate, which was good considering that Scully was on her feet in the back of the lab. It was technically against protocol to not be strapped in when the rover was in motion, but the vehicle had a second-to-none balance system of shocks and struts, and even when the terrain was rough, the drive had proved to be pretty smooth.

And the terrain here, Mulder observed, was about as flat as they were ever going to get. A good place for distracted driving. There wasn’t much—a couple of non-urgent updates from Mission Control, and a video file from Frohike that he’d look at later—but the last email in the list grabbed his attention. Mulder checked his route again and then glanced back to make sure Scully was still in the back before clicking open the correspondence.

“Mulder,” the email began. “Regarding our discussion from several weeks ago, I decided to take your advice and work the problem. Fairly certain the mission isn’t cursed (that was the stress talking), but as I sit at night and think about some of the issues we’ve been having, I’m more and more convinced sabotage may be the order of the day. I had every intention of reaching out to you so that you could talk me out of it, but then I found the attached in the mess this morning. I’m passing along to you before I reach out to Mission Control. Please advise.”

A low feeling of unease blossomed in his belly as he opened the attachment.

It was a picture of a note scrawled on a mission notepad, the writing sloppy and unkempt, the words twisting off to run down the side of the page as it ran out of room. The note simply read: “It is not fair. It is not FAIR. IT IS NOT FAIR .”

Immediately, Mulder felt an adrenaline dump. The nature of the handwriting itself spoke to a mind that was unbalanced, and the tone of the words pointed to an anger that had probably been festering for some time.

He stared at the picture of the note, trying to figure out what he would do about it.

“Everything okay?” Mulder jumped in his seat and turned to find Scully standing behind him, looking at him with calm expectancy. “News from home?”

“Uh,” he said, reaching forward to log out of his email. “Not exactly.”

Scully cocked her head at him and he was about to launch into an explanation—she was medical staff after all, and he thought it was probably time to loop her in—when the rover lurched to the starboard side and slammed to a stop with an almighty crack. Mulder, who was strapped into the seat, was shoved against the restraints, but Scully, who had been standing at his shoulder, had been catapulted forward and was now half on the floor of the rover, wedged in between the two seats.

“Scully!” Mulder shouted. He killed the engine and turned to Scully who was trying to sit up, flipping off the seat belt as he scrambled to help her. She hissed in pain and brought a hand to her temple, where a small gash blossomed with fresh blood.

“I’m okay,” she said, wincing, and Mulder worked an arm under her elbow to help her up.

She stumbled a bit as she tried to regain her feet, and Mulder realized that the rover was listing forward and to the right slightly, the floor uneven, as if it had been a car that found an enormous pothole. Finally, he lowered her into the opposite seat and reached up to pull her hand away from where she had it clamped to her forehead.

She hissed again as Mulder probed the skin around the small cut with his thumb, but let him fuss over her. After a moment, she knocked his hand gently away and reached up to touch the cut. When she pulled her hand down to look, there was a small spot of blood that was already beginning to congeal. “What happened?” she asked.

Mulder turned to look out the windshield at the land in front of them, now tilted unnaturally. The sun was closing in on the horizon, and he could feel a chill pushing in from the reinforced glass.

“I don’t know,” he said. “I’m not sure if I hit something, or…”

“You didn’t see anything?” she asked, looking at him curiously.

“No, I…” He glanced down at the screen where the email from Ehrlich had been up not a moment before.

“We’d better go check it out,” Scully said, licking her lips. “It’s going to be too cold to go outside soon, and if we’re going to need rescuing, we’re going to need to get word to the HAB right away.” She didn’t need to explain that while they were equipped with more than enough supplies (they had twelve weeks worth of supplies for an estimated six week mission), it would still take another rover weeks to get to their location, and probably longer for them all to get back.

“Yeah,” Mulder said, standing to rise and trying to focus. “I’ll go. Do you want me to patch you up first?”

“I can do it,” she said, then nodded at the setting sun. “Sollight’s fading.”

He nodded and wasted no more time, pulling on his hardsuit while Scully shuffled to the back to attend to her injury.

Before he even stepped out of the airlock, the cold hit him. Despite the warmers in his suit blasting full, the bone-chilling temperatures of the red planet pushed at his suit from all sides. He would need to make this quick. Protocol dictated that no astronaut was allowed outside after the sun went down, and with good reason. Their hardsuits, despite being the absolute peak and standard of human ingenuity and technology, pulled too much power from the suit batteries at low temperatures—at the expense of the life support systems—and were no match for the nighttime cold on Mars.

“You doing okay, Scully?” he checked in as he stepped out onto the hard packed earth. She answered him with a crisp affirmative. He looked out at the horizon—the sky was getting dimmer. He glanced once at his suit’s heads up display and moved forward.

As he approached the right hand side of the rover’s front, he saw the issue immediately. The right front wheel of the rover must have fallen into some sort of hole, and the frame of the rover itself was resting on the hole’s lip. As he got closer, he was thinking that he could probably goose the engine to get the other wheels to compensate, but they would then run into the hole as well.

But then, something about the way the ground looked wasn’t right. He shook his head, thinking maybe the darkening conditions could account for what he was seeing, but that didn’t seem quite…

“Scully,” he began saying. “I think you might need to—”

And he suddenly pitched forward before he could finish his thought, swallowed by an all encompassing blackness.

2023 in review

Milestones: 10 years since I completed fellowship and became an attending; 10 years since I moved to Oregon.

Places visited: Hawaii in February with my parents and sister; Yellowstone and Grand Tetons in July with my whole family, with a few days down in Utah; Iceland in September with J; Arizona a couple of times to see my niblings; Seattle for a few weekends.

Games played: Settlers of Catan, Dutch Blitz, Cover Your Assets, Codenames, Exploding Kittens, Zombie Kittens, Happy Salmon, Trails, and Dragonwood. Abandon All Artichokes was also very shortly abandoned and Tacocat was not as entertaining as hoped.

Puzzles completed: 2 (one Karin mostly did, and I just threw down a few pieces).

Movies watched: Wakanda Forever; Return of the King (in the theater in April); Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (terrible movie); Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (excellent movie); Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget (stop making want to give up chicken!); Red, White, and Royal Blue.

TV shows watched: Battlestar Galactica (all but the last season because I don’t want it to end), Shadow and Bone season 2 (I am so mad that it was canceled), Doctor Who specials, Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Great British Bake-Off, Heartstopper season 2 (and let’s be real, lots of season 1 again as well), Lockwood & Co (I think I still have the last episode to watch), Tom Jones (PBS), Good Omens season 2, Schmicago (so so good).

TV shows watched with @lucy8675309: The Mandalorian; Ted Lasso season 3; Star Trek: Picard; Star Trek: Strange New Worlds; Loki season 2; Fringe (we’re on season 4 and I love it so much). We started to watch the second season of Our Flag Means Death, but it was taking us away from Fringe, so it’s on the back burner.

Books read: 128 (!!!). Here’s a link to my storygraph account. I’ll do a separate sum up.

Audiobooks listened to: 13.5. My hope had been to do one per month, and Jonathan Strange took at least 3 months to finish, so I’m surprised I made it, but I did have a long road trip to Yellowstone, where I listened to 3 different books on the way there and back. (Carry On is the 0.5 – I listened to 2/3rd of it on the plane ride down and wanted to finish it by Christmas so switched over to the ebook).

Musicals/Plays watched: Moulin Rouge: the Musical (the movie is so much better); Ain’t Too Proud; My Fair Lady; Choir Boy; Hairspray; A Midsummer’s Night Dream; Six; Tina: The Tina Turner Musical; Les Miserables; Waitress (in the movie theater).

Concerts attended: Theo Katzman in April; Vienna Teng at The Triple Door in Seattle in August.

Music listened to: The Riversitter by Vienna Teng, Prayer for the Broken by Naya Rivera, multiple hours of classical music while visiting my parents.

Medical conferences attended: 2, one virtually, one in Phoenix, in August in 115 heat.

Medical conferences where I gave a presentation: 1 on a specific consideration on organ donation (the reason why I was in Phoenix in August).

Number of lectures given: 5 including to the NW Internal Medicine Society.

Nights spent in the hospital because my driveway too icy/snowy to get home: only 3!

Knitted projects: Wisteria scarf (a Christmas present that I finished in January); Anne, Diana, and Gilbert dolls were finished in the spring (only took me 2 years); Orchid and Gold Poppins scarf, Grandpa sweater (my first real sweater!), 3 scarves for Christmas (which are in various stages of finished and need to be mailed).

Number of skeins of yarn bought: … Just enough for a few more dolls and a sweater or two, and some Icelandic yarn and some yarn for my mom…

Notable fails: the annular solar eclipse (too cloudy), parenting succulent plants (3 needed the Plant Hospital, 1 is still in the Plant ICU), summer flirtations.

House repairs: every board on my 32×24 foot deck was replaced. I still have the two lower decks and the back stairs to tackle.

Visits to the beach: only once in June. Must be rectified in the new year.

60 Years of Doctor Who Anniversary Marathon - Davison 4th Review

Well we've finally have moved away from the TV Comic and are now in the Marvel era for Doctor Who. Marvel gave the tv show it's own on going comic series and with it a lot more page space and dedicated arcs. So surely with such an upgrade the Marvel comics must be miles better than the TV comics, right? Ehhhh......

Look this isn't a bad story, pre-say, it's just underwhelming. This was the Fifth Doctor's last outing in the comic before the switch over to the Sixth. But rather than being a culmination of his era in the comic, and a send off for the character, it feels more like a set up for future Sixth Doctor stories... right down to the tone.

The story is told out of order, partly in flashback, but the general plot is that the Doctor and his companion Gus, stumble upon a mining world and run a fowl of the owner. The greedy business mogul wants to buy the Tardis, but the Doctor refuses to sell it. After a confusing escape sequence, the tycoon hires a company mercenary to hunt them down. Because the story is told out of order, with cut-a-ways to the bounty hunter scouting for them, there's not really enough page space to focus on the actual plot. There's lots of ideas floating about, from a killer robot that quotes Shakespeare to the solar system being controlled by run away capitalism and billionaires, but you never get a real sense of the world building because the story keeps going back to the bounty hunter terrorizing random people for no reason.     In addition to that, some scenes just abruptly end, and then comes along the next scene and we've no idea what happened. There's no clear lead through from point A to point B. Like, I still don't know how the Doctor and Gus got back to the Tardis after the office they were in exploded. 

Speaking of Gus... He only exists to die. He doesn't actually do anything in the story. He just complains about them not landing back on Earth and asks the Doctor questions. That's it. I get no real sense of him as a person. I guess I'm supposed to remember his previous stories, but even having read those I still don't feel like I know him. Same goes for the Doctor, who gets very little to do. But at least he gets to act defiant and show some personality.   I suppose Gus's death has some ironic tragedy to it, given how he dies as soon as the Doctor finally gets him back home. And I suppose it fits the 'nice man against a nasy universe' theme that follows through the Fifth Doctor's era. However, the rest of the comic is very much absurdist satire and dark comedy that this emotional beat doesn't really land.

Hence why I say this is really a Sixth Doctor comic as that tone fits his era more. In fact the entire point of the comic is to set up the business tycoon as a re-occurring villain in the Sixth Doctor's era. The end result of all this is a few clever ideas, but nothing that really hangs together as a story.

Germany's Economy Minister Robert Habeck sends congratulations on Ukraine's Independence Day

Habeck posted a video in English, with German subtitles.

Habeck continues that Ukraine is fighting for European values and a peaceful and democratic future with freedom and prosperity. "This is why Germany and its partners around the world will continue to stand by your side. And we will continue to offer Ukraine financial, humanitarian, militarian and diplomatic support for as long as it is needed." Habeck ends his videos with wishes for everyone in Ukraine, saying he hopes that next years Independence Day will happen under different circumstances, peaceful "in a sovereign and free Ukraine".

German Chancellor Scholz' government, of which he's part of, has been under constant critism since the start of the war. Scholz and main parts of his governments got critized for how they're dealing with the war, mainly because of an Pro-Russian approach, appeasing Putin, lacking support in the past and currently and not delivering or delaying weapon deliveries.

Lately, Habeck received critism for how he's handling the German energy crisis. He "inherited" an economy, that's dependent on Russian energy, gas, coal and oil. Despite this, Habeck was one of the first German politicans who advocated for a stop and was praised, in the beginning of the war, for dealing with the depency and finding new solutions for Germany. Within weeks and months, he managed to largely reduce the import of Russian oil, gas and coal. Habeck made it clear that Germany will completely stop buying Russian gas, oil and coal. His actions to find new solutions for Germany received mixed reviews, since he also changed his stance on several topics. So far, he and his party (Die Grünen / The Greens) advocated for safe and economical-friendly energy, like solar and wind energy. To deal with the energy depency, Habeck now started to find other solutions, like LNG, since the previous gouvernment under Angela Merkel was the issue for the depency. The last gouvernment not only missed the switch to renewable energies, but held it up and did not implement it. Habeck justified his changed stance with having to act due to the Russian War and in order to help Ukraine and no longer support Russia. During the six months of war, he was highly praised by many Germans for his open, honest and clear communication, admitting mistakes, explaining complicated facts and speaking openly about problems and struggles. This earned him support from large parts of Germany, making him to one of the most loved and popular politicans, along with his colleague, Foreign Minister Baerbock. Besides his communication, he was also praised for his position against Putin / Russia and his support for Ukraine. Habeck has a history of condeming Russia's actions and speaking out against Putin, as well as warning about the depency on Russia.

His party also has a history of supporting Ukraine. They condemned the annexation in 2014, warned about energy depency, critized Nordstream 2, spoke out against Putin several times and advocated in the past to support and help Ukraine more.

The Greens are currently part of the German government, next to SPD (Chancellor Scholz' party) and the FDP.
